00:00:30...well, it's kind of slow.
00:00:32We wanted to change all of that.
00:00:36Welcome to SailGP, the fastest race on the water.
00:00:40We're sailing Formula One race cars on water.
00:00:44Up to 100 kilometres per hour.
00:00:46Just to get on one of these boats, you have to have a little bit of crazy in you.
00:00:53The America's Cup is very fleeting.
00:00:55It comes every three to four years.
00:00:58So it's very different to be able to turn on the TV and cheer on your favourite sports team every weekend.
00:01:06We wanted to create the best sports league in the world.
00:01:10To do that, we needed one of the best sailors in the world.
00:01:14Jimmy Svithal.
00:01:15Some of the most successful guys in sports aren't necessarily, let's say, the most talented.
00:01:40You know, they're not the superstar track athlete or the superstar swimmer, but they're just a really good, consistent team player.
00:01:48And I think that's me.
00:01:49I feel super average.
00:01:53For me, personally, it was just, well, I'm just going to do more than the other guy.
00:01:57I feel like I don't have the talent level of the other guy, so no problem.
00:02:00I'll just put my hours in.
00:02:01I'll take the person with the work ethic and the team attitude every day of the week.
00:02:11You really have to dig deep and really see what you're made of.
00:02:14Just spending every waking minute trying to improve as an athlete.
00:02:20And that was the mentality throughout the America's Cup.
00:02:24For over 150 years, the world's best sailors have competed for one of the oldest trophies in sport, the America's Cup.
00:02:35This is where sailing legends are made.
00:02:39These are not boats you take the family sailing in over the weekend.
00:02:44These boats are very, very fast, very unstable.
00:02:48And if you put them at the wrong angle or have any kind of equipment failure, anything goes wrong, these boats end up upside down.
00:02:57Oh, my gosh!
00:02:59Some of the athletes succumbed to the pressure, but not Jimmy.
00:03:03He was much more formidable than I ever realized.
00:03:06The current is flooding in.
00:03:11Look for these boats to go fast.
00:03:12Jimmy and I were sailing for Oracle Team USA, going up against Team New Zealand.
00:03:17Jimmy, it was his first time as a defending skipper.
00:03:20Huge amount of expectation as a defender in the America's Cup, because you're clearly the favorite.
00:03:24But that changed immeasurably when they capsize.
00:03:28Oracle Team USA's America's Cup defense has suffered a major blow-up.
00:03:32At least 13 people were on board the multi-million dollar yacht that some call a monster to sail.
00:03:39It's nearly twice as long as...
00:03:40He fell right through the wing, and he could have been killed.
00:03:44My phone starts ringing.
00:03:45I look down.
00:03:46It's Larry Ellison calling.
00:03:48Larry was the owner of the Oracle Racing Team.
00:03:50And I was expecting him to just unload and just say, what have you done to us here?
00:03:57And actually, the opposite happened.
00:03:59He said, look, I believe you guys can still win it.
00:04:03And it was just like a bolt of lightning going through my body.
00:04:07We could fix the boat.
00:04:15It would take a while, but we could fix the boat.
00:04:18When we should have been on the water, we were basically building this boat again from the crash.
00:04:23We lost so much time, and you could see it from the moment the Cup started.
00:04:28He is an absolute Kiwi whitewashed.
00:04:31Team New Zealand really beating them up.
00:04:33Team USA is in huge trouble.
00:04:35Pressures firmly on Jimmy Spithill here.
00:04:38In the 2013 America's Cup, I was on the boat as a tactician.
00:04:43It was the first to win nine series.
00:04:45We were 8-1 down, so we needed to win eight races in a row to take the Cup.
00:04:52I mean, if ever there was an opportunity to give up, to convince yourself, well, it's over.
00:04:56You know, there's no way we can win that many races in a row.
00:05:00You can't do that.
00:05:01It can't be done.
00:05:02When these guys have been beating you over and over again.
00:05:06If we're honest, a lot of people in the team didn't think it was possible that we could win.
00:05:12I bet it was only Jimmy Spithill that believed that they could still win.
00:05:16Truly believed.
00:05:17You know, there's two things that you get good at growing up as a redhead in Australia.
00:05:21And the first thing's running, for obvious reasons.
00:05:24And then second, fighting.
00:05:26Because you just get sick and tired of running.
00:05:29Once you're out on the water, it's not much different.
00:05:32Oh, sweet baby Jesus.
00:05:35It all comes down to who really wants it the most.
00:05:39All the media wanted to talk about was us losing.
00:05:43You know, every...
00:05:44I mean, 90% of the questions were at me.
00:05:46And so finally we just got to this point.
00:05:51I was like, fuck it.
00:05:54If I'm going down, I'm going to go down swinging.
00:05:56Imagine if these guys lost from here.
00:06:01What an upset that would be.
00:06:03I mean, they've almost got it in the bag.
00:06:07Welcome back to San Francisco in the 34th America's Cup.
00:06:10This is do or die day for Oracle.
00:06:13It's never over until it's over.
00:06:15There's no conservative play here.
00:06:17We are fucking going for it.
00:06:21And we started winning races.
00:06:23We won one.
00:06:24The Americans pulled it off right in front of the Kiwis.
00:06:28And then we won two.
00:06:30And then we won three.
00:06:31They're waiting for it.
00:06:33Oh.
00:06:33My team's a powerful thing and I can swing at any time.
00:06:37Two races today go the way of the defenders of the America's Cup.
00:06:43This is a comeback like international sport may have never seen before.
00:06:47The Americans are within one point of the Kiwi.
00:06:51For the home supporters, this is now the best show in town.
00:06:56It is now 8-8 and the winner of this race will take the Cup.
00:07:00When you're 8-1 down, it just looks so far away.
00:07:03It's like you're sort of standing at the bottom of Everest and you're just looking up.
00:07:07It doesn't matter how sort of steep that hill looks to climb.
00:07:10I mean, if you're still in the fight, you just, you never give up.
00:07:15One race for it all.
00:07:16Unbelievable speed gains.
00:07:26Holy smokes, would you look at that.
00:07:29Talk about demoralizing.
00:07:30It's such a big lead.
00:07:32It was one of the best displays of leadership that I've ever seen in my life.
00:07:36Jimmy, Maid's team, believed that they could still win.
00:07:39Gary, this is, every time they leave the dock, they seem faster.
00:07:44And maybe they were a little conservative on the start.
00:07:47I'm not sure Jimmy Spithill has ever been conservative at anything, Gary.
00:07:54Sure enough, we went out there and we won.
00:07:55The Stars and Stripes say it all.
00:07:58The comeback of 2013 is complete.
00:08:03It's been labelled the greatest comeback in sporting history.
00:08:07Our team backed by an American billionaire could return from 8-1 down to claim victory.
00:08:13She bore witness to the greatest comeback in sports history.
00:08:16We were here yesterday, we were here the day before, and we'd never stop believing.
00:08:21Beyond the America's Cup, Jimmy won everything there is in the world of sailing.
00:08:25He is a legend.
00:08:26I don't know any other word to describe him.
00:08:31I think Jimmy's become an amazing leader.
00:08:34He's just got that grit that determines whether you can win or lose at the very, very top level.
00:08:40And you either make it or you don't.
00:08:43You're fighting for your career.
00:08:44Hello and welcome.
00:08:57I just want to thank you guys all for being here today.
00:09:00Obviously an incredibly exciting day and moment for all of us at SailGP.
00:09:05The moment we've all been waiting for and the start of what we hope will redefine sailing.
00:09:09How exciting is this for you to see this concept that you and Larry Ellison have dreamed up finally come to reality?
00:09:16It's sort of almost a bit surreal that we're here on the eve of the first event.
00:09:25SailGP is more than just a sailboat race.
00:09:29This is the future of sailing.
00:09:30Larry Ellison and I start at SailGP.
00:09:36To bring this whole sport to a new level of excitement, that's the whole goal.
00:09:42We race in 12 to 14 incredible locations around the world over a weekend of fantastic competition.
00:09:48So each Grand Prix weekend we have five fast-paced 12 to 15 minute fleet races over two days.
00:09:55Like a bullet out of a gun.
00:09:56What a start for the French.
00:09:58New Zealand are through.
00:09:59Cannot.
00:09:59Oh, no kidding.
00:10:00It's going to hold it over.
00:10:01Sailboats can't sail directly into the wind because it won't power their wingsail.
00:10:05So they zigzag up the course.
00:10:08You've got to find better wind.
00:10:11Teams have to round a number of market boys within a very tight boundary constraint.
00:10:15At the same time, they need to avoid collisions or vote-on-vote penalties.
00:10:20First boat across the finish wins.
00:10:22The Aussies claim the victory.
00:10:24The teams accumulate points for each race.
00:10:26Ten points for the winner all the way down to one.
00:10:30The top three, they go into a top three final and first across the line wins the event.
00:10:36Australians get it done and get the win.
00:10:39Winner takes all for the weekend.
00:10:40Prize money is in the region of $400,000 US.
00:10:43And then at the end of the season, we have one final showdown, one race, 15 minutes, three boats.
00:10:49Winner takes all for $2 million.
00:10:51And second and third place, leave with nothing.
00:10:59People say, wow, this is nothing like the vision that I had when I was coming along to watch a sailboat race.
00:11:06It's high speed.
00:11:07It's action-packed.
00:11:09Australia's going to get it.
00:11:10Australia's going to get it.
00:11:10Australia's going to get it.
00:11:11Australia's going to get it.
00:11:13Australia's going to get it.
00:11:16For a championship to be successful, you really need a strong American team.
00:11:22We wanted Zal GP to bring out their best athletes in the world.
00:11:26So we had to get Jimmy Spittel.
00:11:29We knew he had a following in the US.
00:11:31And we knew that he would lead USA well.
00:11:35So he was a logical choice.
00:11:38C'est bon.
00:12:08Yeah.
00:12:09Yeah, 17.
00:12:10The best number because it was my dad's boat number…
00:12:15It's actually been the opposite because you're not just doing it for yourself.
00:12:20You're actually doing it for..
00:12:22Yeah, yeah you do it for your teammates and things, but when you're doing it for
00:12:25family members it just means more and you're really motivated.
00:12:29I'm trying to think if there's any…
00:12:31I'm going to take my music with me…
00:12:34The other side is when you have a real tough moment.
00:13:42My parents saw a place for sale in a national park.
00:13:47We moved to Elvina Bay in Pittwater in 1981.
00:13:52Et c'était un un-bédroom chac.
00:13:56Et ma femme et moi étaient très excités.
00:13:59C'était frontière-land là-bas.
00:14:04C'était comme un petit island.
00:14:06Rain, hail or shine.
00:14:18un petit élvez petitéfarais…
00:14:20C'est à très actif du fijンナили…
00:14:22Faut tout avoir voured dans cette chanson peux traquer l'université…
00:14:24Tout le jeu, mon pays en ligne et a Taxi,
00:14:26petit.
00:14:29Ça a bâtiment.
00:14:30Avant de comprendre le mets.
00:14:31Mais jusqu'après j'ai commencé…
00:14:33…
00:14:56l'aimant, on l'aimant, on l'aimant, on l'aimant, on l'aimant, on l'aimant.
00:15:17le gars a l'aiderait.
00:15:19Il a l'aiderait, il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit,
00:15:22il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit,
00:15:24il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit qu'il a dit.
00:15:27Donc on a l'aiderait.
00:15:34...acrossed the finish line, and a gun went off.
00:15:38And we'd won the race.
00:15:40They won the first race that they ever sailed in, in that boat.
00:15:47The same group of kids came around, but they weren't laughing anymore.
00:15:55If it wasn't for that, I mean, there's just no way I'd be sitting here talking to you about sailing.
00:16:04You know, we've been doing this for, like, 20 years, traveling around with Jimmy.
00:16:13It's been hard at times, with Jimmy being away, with us being in other countries, but with that comes some excitement.
00:16:24I've been fortunate enough to skip it a boat in every cup for the last 25 years.
00:16:28So it's just been a fantastic ride, but relentless at the same time.
00:16:36There's no question that I'm getting to the end of the road in terms of the on-field athletic side in my career.
00:16:43But SailGP was a game-changer.
00:16:46As an athlete, I think there's only a few times in your career where you might get an opportunity to be really tested or to try something completely new.
00:16:55I was excited, and I was intrigued, and that's what makes it fun.
00:16:59I said, yeah, let's give it a go.
00:17:03The USA SailGP team has a new leader who needs no introduction.
00:17:07I mean, the first time I got on the F-50, it was just like, holy shit.
00:17:15The F-50 catamaran is a rocket capable of sailing, yes, sailing, up to 60 miles an hour.
00:17:23On these boats, you can't just sort of go half speed.
00:17:26It just has to be full throttle or nothing.
00:17:28Like, hesitation is actually very dangerous in these boats.
00:17:30The F-50 is not a traditional sailing boat.
00:17:33It is this high-performance machine.
00:17:39A SailGP boat has six athletes on board.
00:17:42It's really the skill of the athletes that determine the outcome.
00:17:45The grinders on the boat, they're really the engine.
00:17:48They're cranking the handles, creating the power to pull the sail in and out.
00:17:51It's a huge pressure in terms of physical endurance.
00:17:55The flight controller is the one that manages how high the boat foils out of the water,
00:17:59and it's a real balancing act because the higher you fly out of the water, the faster you go,
00:18:05but the higher risk it is.
00:18:09The wing trimmer, they have lots of tools at their disposal to manipulate the wing sails,
00:18:15to change the shape of the wing based on the wind strength and the mode that the boat's sailing.
00:18:19In my view, I think the wing trimming role's one of the hardest on the boat.
00:18:25The strategist sits at the back of the boat
00:18:27and really provides all of the tactical, strategic input to the driver to make the right decisions.
00:18:33Where are the other boats on the race course and where's danger?
00:18:37The driver's really in charge of making the decisions.
00:18:41They're choosing the mode of the boat,
00:18:42so how fast they want to go, how high they want to push.
00:18:45They're directing, communicating.
00:18:47You do manage a crew. It's very different than being alone in a Formula One car.
00:18:51It's instinct, it's timing, and it's a whole lot of pressure.
00:18:54All the teams have identical technology,
00:18:57so it's coming down to the skill of the athletes.
00:19:00You're getting a lot of lead changes.
00:19:01It's really hard not to make errors.
00:19:05Even the best athletes in the world can't do everything perfectly.
00:19:09If you're not pushing it to get in front, if you're too conservative, you're not going to win in Sal GP.
00:19:19And that's a wrap on Season 1 with the Australians taking the crown.
00:19:22Season 1, the US team, they finished last.
00:19:29But there's no doubt in my mind that we could build a team
00:19:32that I believe could get out there and be competitive.
00:19:34Seismic changes to the USA team.
00:19:42The man wielding the axe needs no introduction.
00:19:45Jimmy Spittel is known for his no-nonsense approach,
00:19:48and we look forward to seeing how he adapts to Sal GP.
00:19:51What was it about the championship that made you want to be part of it?
00:19:55Oh, it looks like the best racing in the world.
00:19:57It was very, very tough, to be honest, just sitting on the sideline and watching Season 1.
00:20:01USA Sale GP looking to break their streak of bad luck.
00:20:07First of all, this is good, because you were just giving me shit before.
00:20:11You may come from totally different backgrounds,
00:20:14but you've got the same goal, you're both covering one another,
00:20:16you're jumping in for it,
00:20:18and you just, hour after hour, you really start to build those tight bonds.
00:20:22And that's the other thing that was happening here.
00:20:25It was like this sort of family away from a family was forming.
00:20:29Jimmy's one of the best sailors, because when it mutters,
00:20:32when the chips are down, he brings a group together,
00:20:37and he gets every part of the boat working in harmony.
00:20:40Just drop, yeah, no problem, we're crossing.
00:20:42Copy.
00:20:43One luck.
00:20:44Good evening, fast turn.
00:20:45USA Sale GP, they are up and foiling, looking very good.
00:20:49They're going to pick up a point ahead of Phil Robertson,
00:20:51so a little salt in the wound for the Spanish boat there,
00:20:54courtesy of Mr. Spithill.
00:20:55It's number two as Jimmy Spithill
00:20:57and the three-million crew guide their boat to a victory.
00:21:00Let's go down, we're just a concurrence.
00:21:02Look at the speed on board the US boat.
00:21:03Great work by Jimmy Spithill.
00:21:07Nice, boys.
00:21:08How's that, mate?
00:21:11We can see the crowds there watching the American boat,
00:21:14looking to come home.
00:21:15We're fortunate enough,
00:21:16we went straight to the grand final that season.
00:21:17We climbed ourselves up to the top three.
00:21:21There you go, third place.
00:21:22We finished on the podium, season two,
00:21:25so good result, you know, from last to the final.
00:21:27The USA finishing in third place
00:21:30to wrap up season two,
00:21:32Sail GP here in San Francisco, California.
00:21:35It was always a priority for me
00:21:37to make the team successful on the water,
00:21:40but I also wanted to make the team successful
00:21:43off the water as well commercially.
00:21:46And while Jimmy rides the ship for Team USA,
00:21:49these are boom times for everyone.
00:21:52We really set ourselves up in season three.
00:21:57But then in season four,
00:21:58we were now one of the top teams and competitive.
00:22:00Yeah, buddy, that is how you do it,
00:22:02Paul Campbell, James.
00:22:03Oh, he's peacocking today, isn't he?
00:22:05We added multiple sponsors,
00:22:07some incredible partners,
00:22:09Red Bull, T-Mobile, Bloomberg,
00:22:11Sinister Hotels as well.
00:22:12He was bringing that new dimension to it,
00:22:15and that's a good thing
00:22:16because at the end of the day,
00:22:18these teams have to work in a business sense
00:22:20to be able to have longevity.
00:22:22They're learning on the job,
00:22:23but look at that lead, it's 200 metres.
00:22:26Larry initially funded the lead,
00:22:29but almost all of the teams now
00:22:31have been bought by private owners
00:22:34and some big players,
00:22:36really the who's who around the world
00:22:38in terms of business, sport, and celebrities.
00:22:42And I was having fun and enjoying the process.
00:22:47But it's funny how things can all change so suddenly.
00:22:52There's like 100 different stipulations
00:22:54on when and where you can park,
00:22:56but we're in between spots here at the moment,
00:22:58so they're in here about six feet from the church.
00:23:00This is us. Put it in.
00:23:03If you need any help, he's an expert.
00:23:08In the summer of 2023,
00:23:11it just so happened that there was a group
00:23:13that really wanted to purchase the U.S. team.
00:23:17So we actually set up a call
00:23:19with Mike Buckley about that sale.
00:23:23I saw that it was a great opportunity,
00:23:25so I set out on a path to find investors
00:23:29to back us,
00:23:31and if we wanted to change our sport,
00:23:33then putting a bunch of people in a box
00:23:35that all think alike is a really great way to fail.
00:23:39How's that?
00:23:40How are you doing?
00:23:41I'd call Ryan first.
00:23:44I said, hey, there's an opportunity to buy a team.
00:23:47Andy there.
00:23:47I said, hey, how are you?
00:23:50You pick up Ryan?
00:23:52Yeah, they picked me up.
00:23:53They came to the wrong terminal,
00:23:54so I had to walk,
00:23:56but if you call that picking me up, they did.
00:24:00How are we doing today?
00:24:01Hey, here to see Larry Ellison.
00:24:02Larry Ellison.
00:24:03Your name?
00:24:04Buckley.
00:24:05Ryan McKillen.
00:24:06You can tell Andrew Thompson we're here.
00:24:08I think the main goal for me
00:24:10was to push American sailings further than they do.
00:24:14I think we have the opportunity
00:24:15to truly inspire our country.
00:24:19We talked last night at dinner,
00:24:20and putting an F-50 in, like, in Times Square,
00:24:23something loud like that, like...
00:24:25If Jonas wants to pay the bill, forgive me.
00:24:28In the early days,
00:24:29I just didn't really read the vibe right.
00:24:32I thought they weren't serious.
00:24:34We have, like, you know,
00:24:35three kind of pillars that we talk about.
00:24:37Three races.
00:24:40Race to commercial viability, sponsors.
00:24:42Race to change the sport.
00:24:44Yeah.
00:24:45And the race that's around these buoys.
00:24:49I'm not sure the third is the most important thing.
00:24:52I'm not sure how many sports teams in the world
00:24:54do well commercially
00:24:55when they're finishing at the back of the fleet.
00:24:57Fair enough.
00:24:59Yeah.
00:25:00He's a very charismatic guy.
00:25:02They had a vision,
00:25:03and Ryan then said a pretty large number.
00:25:06They proved that they were serious.
00:25:09I just bought the U.S. SailGP team
00:25:15from Larry Ellison,
00:25:17DeAndre Hopkins,
00:25:18Issa Rae,
00:25:19Gary Vaynerchuk,
00:25:20Griffin,
00:25:21and a bunch of other epic people.
00:25:22We think that we acquired the crown jewel of sailboat racing globally.
00:25:30SailGP is kind of the new kid on the block
00:25:32and making huge waves.
00:25:34We've got 14 races around the world in iconic cities.
00:25:38And then it looks like the future's bright.
00:25:39The new teams said pretty early on
00:25:42that they wanted to change things.
00:25:45And if you look down in history at the U.S.A. teams,
00:25:48they've not always had Americans at the heart of them.
00:25:51And the U.S.A. public has not always loved the fact
00:25:53that they needed an Australian to bring home that glory.
00:25:56So they want to do something for U.S. sailing.
00:25:59And that involved having only U.S.A. individuals on the boat.
00:26:05My M.O. is getting American sailors experience.
00:26:09You know, there's this perception
00:26:10that there's not enough talent in America
00:26:12to field an all-American team at the top of our sport.
00:26:15And, you know, that's a bunch of bullshit.
00:26:20I respect Jimmy to the moon and back a million times over.
00:26:25But I think the fan base smells
00:26:28kind of B.S. from a mile away.
00:26:30You've got to have authenticity.
00:26:32I didn't put the flags on the top of the boats.
00:26:35Russell and Mary did.
00:26:36But we have a giant American flag at the top of our wing.
00:26:41And for me, that's really important.
00:26:43If we're going to have a 4-foot by 8-foot
00:26:46giant American flag
00:26:47and the Statue of Liberty on our wing,
00:26:50we should probably have Americans on the team.
00:26:56So Jimmy's out.
00:26:58And that was a pretty easy parting of ways.
00:27:03It's happened out of the blue.
00:27:07We want to change the face of sailing.
00:27:09We bought the team.
00:27:10They sold the team to us.
00:27:11This league is about country versus country.
00:27:14Did you think Jimmy might call him a career at that point?
00:27:18I mean, that's not up to me.
00:27:21We'll see what the future holds.
00:27:24Jimmy's a fighter.
00:27:25But I was thinking, what the hell am I going to say to him?
00:27:30This was a pretty sudden move.
00:27:33Jen and I were meant to go off on some hike.
00:27:35And I'm like, hey, listen, I've actually got to go and meet Russell.
00:27:37She's like, Russell?
00:27:37Well, what's he doing here?
00:27:38Like, she thought he and I were organising, like, a game of golf or something.
00:27:41I'm like, no, no, no.
00:27:42This is actually, you know, it must be serious if he wants to speak in person.
00:27:47It was pretty obvious to me that it was going to be something bad.
00:27:50He drove up.
00:27:52And that's when he broke the news and said, hey, listen.
00:27:55We've got someone that's really interested in the US team.
00:27:57But the catch is he wants the entire team to be all American.
00:28:00At first, I think he was shocked.
00:28:06But Jimmy is really good at not letting his emotions be outwardly recognised.
00:28:12He's really good at hiding how he feels.
00:28:15So it was hard to get a read on him.
00:28:18At first, it felt like a bit of a blow.
00:28:21Jimmy's initial reaction was, like, no, I don't want to go that route.
00:28:26This is my team.
00:28:27I'm sticking with it.
00:28:28I was surprised, given my background.
00:28:33I'd really built my career on putting together successful teams
00:28:37and had a track record.
00:28:43He had an option on the team.
00:28:45So he could have said no and blocked the deal.
00:28:48He said, all right, have a think on it and let's chat tomorrow.
00:28:51So went and climbed a mountain, had a think about it.
00:28:58He thought about it some more and perspective kind of changed.
00:29:02It was like, oh, wow.
00:29:03One door closes and man, an even better door is opening.
00:29:06I think he saw the chance to take his career on the next journey
00:29:09and do something that a lot of other people never get the chance to do.
00:29:14He saw an opportunity to build his own team from scratch.
00:29:21They were totally within their right to decide who he wanted to run it
00:29:25and how he wanted to run it.
00:29:27Now, did it make me think, man, I can't wait to go against these guys?
00:29:32Oh, yeah, 100%.
00:29:34So I was like, fuck it, I'm out.
00:29:38Let's go.
00:29:51So what just happened with your dad while you were on vacation?
00:29:54So he was part of the USA SailGP team and now he is.
00:30:00Well, then he basically got kicked out from that team.
00:30:04I don't think he got kicked out.
00:30:06It was sort of like a business deal.
00:30:07I mean, it sounded to me like he got kicked out.
00:30:15I was kind of surprised in the people that were bringing in to run the team.
00:30:18Mike Barkley, I didn't really have a whole lot of knowledge about Mike.
00:30:28He tried to do a couple of America's Cup campaigns,
00:30:30but he'd never got them off the ground.
00:30:33The guy must be one hell of a hustler to convince the league
00:30:36that he is the man to take over, you know, the running of the US team
00:30:40and also make him a co-owner.
00:30:43When we bought the team, we saw an opening for a top driver
00:30:47and my first call was to Taylor.
00:30:49Action!
00:30:51Let's go!
00:30:52Taylor's never been afraid to go for it.
00:30:55You know, Mike, I've been his teammate, I've been his competitor,
00:30:58you know, I've been his colleague.
00:31:00We've truly built a brotherhood.
00:31:03We share the same vision about, you know, representing our country.
00:31:07There's been a narrative for so many years
00:31:09about how, you know, there's no talent in our country
00:31:13in the sport that we do.
00:31:14We're trying to put America back at the top of sailing.
00:31:19Taylor has come from a different background.
00:31:22He was a top match racer,
00:31:24but there's a huge difference to racing at that level
00:31:27versus leading this team.
00:31:29To be chosen to drive this boat is an absolute honor
00:31:34and to do it after an athlete like Jimmy Spito, even more so.
00:31:39You know, to grow up watching him make his way to the top of the sailing world
00:31:42and then staying at the top for as many years as he did,
00:31:45it was like, this guy's the real deal.
00:31:47Truthfully, I don't think he should have retired,
00:31:52but I guess maybe he's thinking of his time
00:31:55for him to pass the torch a little bit and see LGP.
00:32:03Before I left the team,
00:32:05I had one last event with the U.S.
00:32:07if there was one way I wanted to go out,
00:32:10it was with a win.
00:32:24On Spain's southwest coast
00:32:26lies one of the country's oldest port cities,
00:32:28and today it's home to the fifth event
00:32:30of Season 4 of SailGP.
00:32:32Well, I was setting up for my last race with the team.
00:32:37You know, I mean, the deal had been done,
00:32:39the contract had been signed,
00:32:41money had been sent,
00:32:42and it was like, OK, Cadiz is your last event.
00:32:45Well, you're going to hand over the team.
00:32:47I know it's been somewhat of a delayed farewell,
00:32:50but this one's it.
00:32:51I'm out, and for today,
00:32:53no matter what happens,
00:32:54I'm going to come in with a smile on my face.
00:32:56If we win the race,
00:32:57my smile will be a lot fucking bigger.
00:32:59I definitely wanted to go out
00:33:02and show him, well,
00:33:03have you really made the right decision here?
00:33:06How are you?
00:33:07You good?
00:33:08Yeah.
00:33:09Jimmy's last race,
00:33:10and he's racing with the guy
00:33:12that's going to take his driver's seat.
00:33:14I think it was awkward for sure.
00:33:18I think it was pretty tough for both of them.
00:33:20For Taylor to be, you know,
00:33:22replacing someone of the stature of Jimmy Spithull,
00:33:25that's going to be tough,
00:33:26and for Jimmy,
00:33:27didn't want to give up that team.
00:33:28I think Jimmy,
00:33:30having Taylor on board,
00:33:32you know,
00:33:32I think he probably wanted to prove a point
00:33:34to say,
00:33:35by the way, guys,
00:33:36I've still got it.
00:33:37Settle in.
00:33:37We're a minute away
00:33:38from the start of race number one
00:33:40in Cadiz
00:33:40on day number one
00:33:41of the Spain Sale Grand Prix.
00:33:43It's all about getting on the foils now
00:33:44as the line turns white,
00:33:46and the Danes have been spotted
00:33:48a huge lead right off the gate,
00:33:49and it looks like the Americans
00:33:51on the inside.
00:33:51Do they have the right of way
00:33:52as Australia comes around?
00:33:54All eyes on the Kiwis and the Americans.
00:33:56Here, Jimmy Spithull,
00:33:56what he's saying?
00:33:57I'm struggling for speed.
00:33:58Big error by the Kiwis,
00:33:59massive error.
00:34:00Oh, they've trapped themselves.
00:34:02Advantage USA.
00:34:03The Americans are coming in,
00:34:04and their speed is building,
00:34:06and the Americans just barely slide
00:34:08into the event final.
00:34:09Oh, never a down top.
00:34:11We can see the speed dropping off
00:34:13for Rockwell Denmark.
00:34:14USA, first to turn.
00:34:16Could stay foiling on board the US boat.
00:34:18It's close, really close.
00:34:20Jimmy Spithull,
00:34:20on the handles.
00:34:22Expect a lead change.
00:34:23Jimmy Spithull,
00:34:24great, great decision making.
00:34:27Look at this,
00:34:28nearly a 200 meter game.
00:34:29And the Americans pick up
00:34:31the golden ticket.
00:34:32Prime opportunity for USA Sale GP
00:34:34to take control of this race.
00:34:36Jimmy Spithull and the USA Sale GP team.
00:34:40They come to Spain,
00:34:41and they claim the victory.
00:34:42The team was in last place
00:34:52when I took over,
00:34:54and look at where we got to.
00:34:56After we won,
00:34:57and we're spraying the champagne,
00:34:58it was just unbelievable
00:35:00to share it with
00:35:00just some amazing people
00:35:02that I'd worked for years with
00:35:04at that point.
00:35:05We'd gone through some hard times,
00:35:06but to then build it back up
00:35:07to where we were
00:35:08and to finish as a team.
00:35:10If you could script
00:35:11how you would want to leave,
00:35:13it doesn't get any better than that.
00:35:15So that wraps up
00:35:16the Spain Sale Grand Prix
00:35:17and the Lucia Cadiz
00:35:18as the Americans celebrate
00:35:20on the Atlantic.
00:35:21To be quite honest,
00:35:22that's as good a place
00:35:23as you can leave a team
00:35:25for a new buyer.
00:35:36So it's the Americans
00:35:37that'll battle it out
00:35:38here in Abu Dhabi
00:35:39with Taylor Canfield,
00:35:40the driver for USA Sale GP,
00:35:43a new team,
00:35:43a revamped team
00:35:44as Jimmy Spithull
00:35:46has moved on
00:35:46to other ventures.
00:35:47USA!
00:35:48USA!
00:35:50USA!
00:35:51USA!
00:35:53USA!
00:35:53USA!
00:35:54Our challenge
00:35:58is to keep pushing.
00:35:59I think we want to be
00:36:04finishing in the top five.
00:36:07You know,
00:36:08like we can do this.
00:36:10I love sailing,
00:36:11so I'm competing
00:36:13as a team strategist.
00:36:15I stand behind Taylor
00:36:17and kind of paint a picture
00:36:18of what's going on
00:36:19on the race course.
00:36:20And Taylor's feisty.
00:36:22He's, you know,
00:36:23a pit bull.
00:36:25He wants perfection
00:36:26from himself
00:36:26and from his teammates.
00:36:27and, yeah,
00:36:29he wants to win.
00:36:30Come on, Red Bull's out.
00:36:31He's the top.
00:36:32Let's go.
00:36:36One of the first events
00:36:37that the new USA team
00:36:38was racing,
00:36:40it was really light wind.
00:36:41USA right in the fight.
00:36:43Again,
00:36:43a good first day
00:36:44for Taylor Canfield
00:36:45and his crew.
00:36:45And they did really well.
00:36:47That was some aggressive racing.
00:36:48They made the right decisions
00:36:49when they needed to.
00:36:50He went for the win.
00:36:51As a new team
00:36:52and under new ownership,
00:36:53you know,
00:36:53we're ecstatic about that.
00:36:55But, you know,
00:36:56in the end,
00:36:57we're competitors,
00:36:57so we're here to win.
00:36:59But then we went
00:37:00to Sydney,
00:37:01Christchurch,
00:37:02San Francisco,
00:37:03and they are notoriously
00:37:05windier venues.
00:37:07They are more challenging.
00:37:09God damn it.
00:37:10And they struggle.
00:37:11So sloppy.
00:37:12Keep it in the air, please.
00:37:13They came in
00:37:14with a lot of confidence.
00:37:15They came in
00:37:16with a vision
00:37:16and that was awesome.
00:37:18But I don't think
00:37:19that they were really ready
00:37:20to compete together
00:37:22and to go off
00:37:23against the best sailors
00:37:24in the world.
00:37:25Look how your fortunes
00:37:26can change.
00:37:26the USA was
00:37:27in second place.
00:37:28They dropped back to fifth.
00:37:29You know, for us,
00:37:30yeah, this is a new game.
00:37:32It's a learning process.
00:37:35You've got to be connected
00:37:36with the environment
00:37:37and the team.
00:37:38And communication's critical.
00:37:40It's really hard to do well,
00:37:42and it's hard not to make errors.
00:37:44It wasn't really a surprise
00:37:51that it was tough
00:37:52for the USA
00:37:53to replace Jimmy,
00:37:54and they've really struggled.
00:37:58Hold, hold, hold.
00:38:00God damn it.
00:38:02Jimmy Spito,
00:38:03he's an incredibly level-headed,
00:38:05very calm person
00:38:07on the water.
00:38:07I can't always say
00:38:08that I am the same.
00:38:09too much rake, Leo.
00:38:10Look at the bow.
00:38:11Just look at the bow.
00:38:12Look at the bow.
00:38:13I think one of the hardest things
00:38:14about building a culture
00:38:16in this league,
00:38:17everything we say
00:38:18on the F-50
00:38:19goes out to 20 million people.
00:38:21Chairman,
00:38:22you're in the fucking white boat.
00:38:23Tune in, okay?
00:38:25There's a lot of pressure
00:38:26when your name's
00:38:26on the side of the boat.
00:38:27You're still too high
00:38:28the whole time.
00:38:29There's things that I believe
00:38:30are effective performance,
00:38:32more so than other things.
00:38:34Like, there's playbook stuff
00:38:36that Hans and I are doing
00:38:37that we're going away from.
00:38:40So maybe a little bit of it
00:38:41is Taylor's perception
00:38:43of us executing as well.
00:38:45I think so.
00:38:47Mike, I need you.
00:38:47You gotta be looking back there, dude.
00:38:49Tell me there's a boat
00:38:50on the hips.
00:38:51Yeah, for me,
00:38:52I'm maybe that aggressively
00:38:54competitive person
00:38:55and, you know,
00:38:56being a little bit,
00:38:57you know, on the offensive.
00:38:59Some really challenging
00:39:00win conditions
00:39:01for the inexperienced USA crew.
00:39:03They really struggled
00:39:04once Jimmy Spittle
00:39:05left the team.
00:39:07Yeah, all of a sudden
00:39:08it was like,
00:39:09here are the cameras,
00:39:10here's this sexy boat
00:39:11and, you know,
00:39:12oh shit, we're not winning.
00:39:14We're not used to this.
00:39:21And then we got to Bermuda.
00:39:23How do you feel today?
00:39:24Good.
00:39:24Yeah, ready to go?
00:39:26Ready.
00:39:26And that was something
00:39:28we weren't prepared for.
00:39:30We found the ramp.
00:39:33We got to go.
00:39:35If I could get in there.
00:39:37All right.
00:39:43Bye, guys.
00:39:44Hello.
00:39:46Very excited to go sailing.
00:39:48We're going to get into it.
00:39:50Another team that needs
00:39:51a big showing here, Stevie,
00:39:53and you've got to agree
00:39:53with this one,
00:39:54is USA and Taylor Canfield.
00:39:56Absolutely perfect timing
00:39:58by Eric Kyle.
00:40:00Watch these guys.
00:40:00Off to his left,
00:40:02you've got Australia.
00:40:03It should be a problem.
00:40:05Oh, what timing
00:40:06by the Germans there.
00:40:08He had the...
00:40:08Oh, look at the black run!
00:40:09Oh, my Lord!
00:40:13Oh, I hope no one's hurt
00:40:14in that.
00:40:15That was a disaster stick.
00:40:20We, you know,
00:40:21had a pretty good start
00:40:22right in the middle of the pack.
00:40:23They were reaching to mark one
00:40:26and that is the fastest
00:40:27leg of the course.
00:40:28That is when the boat
00:40:29is on a knife edge
00:40:30and all of a sudden,
00:40:31the wing just went whack
00:40:33in the water.
00:40:35Got thrown out of the boat
00:40:36with a lot of Gs.
00:40:37And you just saw the sailors
00:40:39fly out of their cockpits.
00:40:41Unfortunately, like,
00:40:44a wrong button was pressed,
00:40:46which just kind of threw us
00:40:47over pretty violently.
00:40:49Lucky for me,
00:40:50Taylor broke the wing
00:40:51with his kind of shoulder
00:40:52or side of his body
00:40:53because I went through
00:40:54after him head first.
00:40:56So that kind of softened the blow.
00:41:03And Taylor and I
00:41:04got dragged through the water.
00:41:05It became very real
00:41:08very quickly.
00:41:09We are trained
00:41:10to be survivors
00:41:11in those situations.
00:41:13We know exactly
00:41:13where our regulator is,
00:41:14where our knife is,
00:41:16how to unhook ourselves
00:41:17from the boat.
00:41:18But at the same time,
00:41:19you know,
00:41:19you're basically just running
00:41:20on adrenaline
00:41:21and it all happened so fast.
00:41:25Emergency crew
00:41:26in Route USA.
00:41:31Hey, can we get Taylor
00:41:33out of the water?
00:41:35It's an action
00:41:47adrenaline sport.
00:41:50It's not easy
00:41:50and that's part of the game.
00:41:52Now, right shift here.
00:41:55Empire, we're going down
00:41:57to...
00:41:58Certain areas,
00:42:01like trigger spots.
00:42:01How's that there?
00:42:05Yeah.
00:42:07So disappointing.
00:42:08Look at you.
00:42:10Okay, no blood
00:42:11behind the ears.
00:42:13Can I get you
00:42:13to follow my finger
00:42:14with your eyes?
00:42:16It's like,
00:42:17now it's just like,
00:42:18so sore.
00:42:19Like, you don't even feel it
00:42:20when you're,
00:42:20the adrenaline,
00:42:21and then now you like,
00:42:22stop and you're like,
00:42:23I can barely move.
00:42:24It was a little like,
00:42:25this was when I,
00:42:26tingly?
00:42:27Hit the water.
00:42:27Yeah, it was like,
00:42:28tingly.
00:42:28but I think
00:42:30because I hit my arm
00:42:32like so hard
00:42:33that like,
00:42:34yeah.
00:42:35I had a pretty good,
00:42:36you know,
00:42:36laceration of my ankle
00:42:37and couldn't feel
00:42:38my left arm.
00:42:39Are you on medication?
00:42:40We were all lucky
00:42:41that no one really
00:42:42got any serious injuries,
00:42:43but yeah,
00:42:44we were pretty,
00:42:45pretty banged up
00:42:45after a situation like that.
00:42:49Keep coming, keep coming.
00:42:50You know,
00:43:01just to get on one of these boats,
00:43:02you have to have a little,
00:43:03little bit of a loose crew,
00:43:04a little bit of crazy in you.
00:43:14You know,
00:43:14they're on the record
00:43:15as saying that they
00:43:16didn't rate
00:43:18the performance of the team.
00:43:20as important
00:43:20as some of the other factors
00:43:22that they were,
00:43:22they were looking to develop.
00:43:24We asked the fans
00:43:24to bear with us
00:43:25a little longer.
00:43:26It will come.
00:43:27So,
00:43:28they were finishing
00:43:29at the back of the fleet
00:43:30in most of the races.
00:43:31So, the Americans
00:43:32have some work to do.
00:43:33They finished in ninth.
00:43:34Thanks for all the penalties,
00:43:35Greg.
00:43:36And now it's a drag race
00:43:37to the finish line.
00:43:39Can the Spanish get it done?
00:43:40They've got 100 meters to go.
00:43:42Come on!
00:43:45And they will get it.
00:43:46Vamos España.
00:43:47Spain claims season four.
00:43:50We certainly weren't ready
00:44:04to own and operate
00:44:07a SailGP team.
00:44:09There were things
00:44:09that we didn't know
00:44:10and we got to learn
00:44:11and we got to do it
00:44:12in real time
00:44:12as a masterclass.
00:44:14We had that opportunity
00:44:15and now we've got
00:44:17an off-season
00:44:18to actually, you know,
00:44:20build out a plan
00:44:21with the foundation
00:44:22that we were able to build.
00:44:24You know,
00:44:24when we kick it off
00:44:25in November in Dubai,
00:44:26I think we're going to be
00:44:27in a much better spot.
00:44:28and we're going to be
00:44:42going to be
00:44:43in a bit of a control
00:44:43and we're going to be
00:44:44in a minute.
00:44:45Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
00:45:15If you're a professional athlete, your career is pretty short.
00:45:22If you can make it to 40 years old as a professional athlete, you've had a long career.
00:45:32Having a relationship with Larry, I mean, the most valuable part is just having someone at that level as a mentor.
00:45:39And I'll never forget when he said to me, he goes, well,
00:45:42As an athlete, you don't control your destiny.
00:45:47As an owner, you do.
00:45:53Back in the Dolomites, Russell and I were getting through this first part of the discussion,
00:45:58talking about the sale of the U.S. team, the owner, the fact that I'm out, they're going to bring their own team in.
00:46:04And naturally, I'm thinking, oh, I wonder what I'm going to do now.
00:46:07And that's where he hit me with the second part of the conversation, which was, well,
00:46:11we both know that SailGP needs an Italian team.
00:46:15In Italy, man, they have a huge fan base for sailing.
00:46:19I mean, for sport in general, they're just passionate people.
00:46:22I follow some Italian football teams.
00:46:26I mean, you see the fan bases, it's like a frigging religion.
00:46:30Then I looked at the athletes on the water.
00:46:33This next generation of guys and girls coming through Italy.
00:46:36They had real composure and this relentless approach that I'd seen and experienced myself in the past.
00:46:43So there was no doubt in my mind that we could build a competitive team.
00:46:47And that's when the light bulb went off in my head of, oh, wow, this is the opportunity I've really been dreaming of.
00:46:58He's a legend of the sport.
00:47:00He's a three-time world champion.
00:47:02He is the CEO and the founder of the Red Bull Italy SaleGP team.
00:47:07Welcome, Mr. Jimmy Spitzel.
00:47:10Let's do a good round of applause.
00:47:13Buongiorno, benvenuti, and welcome to the team.
00:47:17He wants to go out on top and doesn't want to sort of slowly dwindle.
00:47:22And I think that the opportunity for him to build the Italian team up from scratch, I think he's mentally ready for it.
00:47:29But yeah, we'll see when the day comes, when the boat's actually getting out there on the water.
00:47:33I wonder if he'll feel a little bit of jealousy of not being on the boat himself.
00:47:38To introduce our athletes, Kyle, Alex, Andrea, Ruggie, Enrico, Julia, Matteo, and Philippe, the best Italian talent and stars mixed with some amazing experience as well.
00:47:51Well, Ruggie had just come off back-to-back gold medals.
00:47:54He seemed like the natural fit as a guy that's going to lead the team.
00:47:58He's very, very composed.
00:48:00No ego.
00:48:02And then Kyle Langford.
00:48:03I mean, he and I had won the America's Cup back in 2013.
00:48:07He had been thrown in the deep end in that comeback.
00:48:09One of the best wing trimmers in the world.
00:48:13I mean, he just won three of the four SailGP championships with Australia.
00:48:18He was someone I knew that could really step into the leadership role.
00:48:22During the end of Season 4, Alex was one of the very few people they retained in the US team.
00:48:27But he was definitely letting me know he was looking for other opportunities.
00:48:30And as the Italian team developed, he was definitely someone on our target list.
00:48:35Incredible athlete, the ability to always be thinking a step or two ahead in the rest of the team.
00:48:43Very, very exciting.
00:48:44These are definitely people I want in this squad.
00:48:47They're Olympic champions, multiple world championships, SailGP champions.
00:48:51And I can't wait to see this team out there competing on the water.
00:48:54Very, very good team people.
00:48:56So I thought we might have a real shot here.
00:49:00This has been a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to this point from the entire group.
00:49:04And they have you.
00:49:06Yeah, look, I'm going to put my faith in them.
00:49:11I've always been on the boat.
00:49:13But I've always really looked up to athletes that can perform on the water.
00:49:19And also step up and take that sort of success into the management of the team or the business side.
00:49:26You know, it's someone like Russell.
00:49:27Go out of my comfort zone, challenge myself.
00:49:29Because if I really want to have some growth and continue to learn, that's what you've got to do.
00:49:36You know, to be involved in a brand new team on the toughest racing we have in our sport, that's kind of daunting.
00:49:44But at the same way, man, it's damn exciting.
00:49:46The CEO of a CGP team is really the vision, but they have to balance a lot of stakeholders as well.
00:49:54How are you, mate?
00:49:54Good to see you, mate.
00:49:55Good to see you.
00:49:55Top sports is always pressure.
00:49:57That's part of the fun of it.
00:49:58If it was easy, it wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun.
00:50:02All right.
00:50:03Let's go, boys.
00:50:04Without a doubt, the last six to nine months has been the most full-on I've ever experienced.
00:50:13I've never kind of pushed myself as hard as that, even from a travel point of view.
00:50:18You know, having a family based in the US and then having SailGP being based in Italy
00:50:24in this relentless circle of on the water, off the water, I mean, just burning the midnight oil.
00:50:31Because there's no shortcut in professional sport.
00:50:35We have to prepare the team that's never raced before together.
00:50:39Those key little moments where you just need a little kick here or there, a little off.
00:50:43For a new team, it really is the race before the race.
00:50:47So we had to get our shit together quickly.
00:50:54The USA SailGP team came under new ownership, and they are already facing criticism this season.
00:51:13The US team has been struggling a lot, and as an investor of that team, I would be asking
00:51:18some serious questions.
00:51:19At some point, you've got to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
00:51:24We were not proud of our results last year, right?
00:51:28That was a really hard pill to swallow.
00:51:31And so, yeah, I feel pretty confident that we've worked harder than the other teams in
00:51:36the offseason.
00:51:38We're hopeful that with this kind of new squad that we're going to be competitive.
00:51:43You move forward, right?
00:51:45That's what teams do.
00:51:46The grand final is the top three teams from the season championship.
00:51:52One race, winner take all, $2 million, and that's what we're after.
00:51:58Anything sort of like subjective feedback-wise, feel on the boat-wise, that's really important
00:52:03from yesterday.
00:52:04Biggest thing was just how flat you can be on the wing, through the camber, when at speed.
00:52:12Things are moving super quick, and you're trying to figure out what button to push and
00:52:16when and do two other things at the same time.
00:52:19So the quicker you can be, the more precise you can be.
00:52:21Having this time is so integral to our improvement in this sport, and we are hundreds, if not
00:52:28thousands, of days behind some of the athletes in this league at the moment, and we're just
00:52:32trying to close that gap as quick as we can.
00:52:36I heard from an Olympic weightlifting coach this idea that if you're doing something really
00:52:39hard, only about a third of it should feel good.
00:52:43A third of it, you should feel okay, and a third should feel really hard.
00:52:46The takeaway is actually that if you're pushing yourself to something really competitive like
00:52:50this, that's just the balance of how it feels, and that means you're in the right spot.
00:52:53We wanted to start this season on a high note, and there's a lot of pressure to do that.
00:52:58We want to deliver to our fans, we want to deliver to our partners, we want to deliver
00:53:03to ourselves, our families, each other, all of it.
00:53:07We have an incredible hill to climb.
00:53:10I hope the work we're putting in is going to translate to the race course.
00:53:16I was watching the American team.
00:53:19I tried to do a transition that was good for Taylor, but I was surprised at just how many
00:53:25changes they made.
00:53:27You know, they were delivered a winning team, and I just thought there was just an almost
00:53:31arrogance about, no, no, no, we've got our plan and this is how we're going to do it.
00:53:36The SAIL GP will be returning for the new 2025 season.
00:53:49The high-octane racing is set to start its fifth season in Dubai this weekend.
00:53:52Yeah, going into season five, both Italy and USA are in a challenging place, both teams.
00:53:58Italy with a lot of new, younger athletes coming through that really needed to get to
00:54:03grips with the F50s.
00:54:04And the US team had a number of issues in replacing Jimmy and dealing with a lot of challenges that
00:54:10they'd had, mostly self-inflicted.
00:54:14Yeah, look, there are many rivalries in SAIL GP, but that Italy versus USA, that's going to be a good one.
00:54:21There's a rivalry for sure.
00:54:22I mean, to put it very bluntly, he was kicked out of the team and he started his new team.
00:54:27So he's going to be his rival on day one.
00:54:31Right then, please allow me to welcome you all to the official opening of the Emirates Dubai SAIL Grand Prix.
00:54:41I mean, if Jimmy can bring a brand new team into the championship and beat USA that's now been racing for, you know,
00:54:50at least half of season four, well, you know, that's going to put pressure on the US athletes, isn't it?
00:54:55Yeah, I'm excited about the, you know, a little bit of banter with him and trying to go beat him and his team.
00:55:02And there'll be a new group of SAILORS joining the league on the Italian team, it sounds like.
00:55:05So, yeah, a little bit of a level playing field.
00:55:09Look, I'm not at all afraid of having to start from the bottom and find my way up to the top,
00:55:14especially versus a team that's pretty inexperienced.
00:55:18I don't know the ins and outs of what's in Jimmy's head, but if Jimmy Spithill is thinking about you,
00:55:25that's a good thing.
00:55:27Talent only gets you so far.
00:55:30Confidence, you know, in yourself only gets you so far.
00:55:33When you go into a fight, you need to dig deep and tell yourself,
00:55:38well, fuck it.
00:55:39If I'm going down, I'm going to go down swinging.
00:55:41We wouldn't be out there if we didn't think we could win.
00:55:44And we'll see who's standing at the end.
00:55:46The boats are close to the line here.
00:55:4819 seconds to go.
00:55:49The United States on a good run towards the bottom end of the line.
00:55:52Season 5, it's about to be a live here in Dubai.
00:55:55I think what motivated me as a kid early on was probably the bullying.
00:56:18I remember one day I was with my mates and we just copped in absolute hiding,
00:56:22you know, from some older bullies.
00:56:24And we're kind of walking back through this industrial area over on the mainland.
00:56:28And this boxing gym had just opened up.
00:56:31And this big guy was out the front.
00:56:33And he said, hey, boys, you want to come in for a session?
00:56:37I mean, what I learned in boxing was when you go into a fight,
00:56:40you just need to tell yourself, fuck it.
00:56:45If I'm going down, I'm going to go down swinging.
00:56:52You know, it gave me a bit of self-confidence.
00:56:54It was like, oh, wow.
00:56:56Sport doesn't judge you on what you look like.
00:56:58It judges you on how badly do you want it.
00:57:01And then how hard are you willing to work?
00:57:03You're going to go in a ring.
00:57:08You better make sure you've done more than the other guy.
00:57:11Jimmy's a fighter.
00:57:13He's just got that grit that determines whether you can win or lose at the very, very top level.
00:57:19I've known a lot of top athletes.
00:57:20And Jimmy is the athlete who best demonstrates the ability to never give up.
00:57:33Season 5 is just days away, and Italy's boat is only just now arriving.
00:57:50For Jimmy Spithill and his newly formed Team Italy, every lost hour on the water is a setback.
00:57:55All right, are we good to go?
00:57:56Yep.
00:57:57Gently, because it's not locked under the trolley.
00:57:59There's a lot on the line here.
00:58:00I mean, you've just put together an entirely new group.
00:58:04They've never raced together.
00:58:06But I think the biggest question mark for me was the boat, because the ship was late.
00:58:12The team had had some training, but we need to put together sea trialed boat to effectively go out there and race.
00:58:20It's our first event.
00:58:22To be honest, we don't have a boat yet.
00:58:24At least we have one, but it's not together.
00:58:27So first of all, we have to put together a boat.
00:58:30All the cables are missing, everything is missing.
00:58:35So yeah, a lot of work.
00:58:36And the race is on Saturday.
00:58:38It's really overwhelming.
00:58:40You physically don't have enough time.
00:58:43The race gets to the race just because our boat arrived completely dismounted, and for sure we are having a little bit of issue.
00:58:50We only rolled the boat out sort of yesterday and this morning.
00:58:54They're playing a bit of catch-up.
00:58:57We've got the machinist working through the night, just making some parts that either haven't turned up or didn't quite fit, didn't quite work.
00:59:07The worst thing is when you're waiting for something to be fixed, and the other teams are all training around you.
00:59:14What we absolutely need is to put in hours.
00:59:26Every single minute in the water, it's super important, so everything's going to be tied.
00:59:31They're going to need time on the boat.
00:59:34I mean, every second counts.
00:59:37We had to figure out how we're going to get this boat ready to go.
00:59:41Jimmy, he's doing a very good job understanding what is the need of the team.
00:59:46He's a great sailor, but it's so much more than that.
00:59:51He has a wonderful mind.
00:59:52He is a great strategist.
00:59:54He's a great recruiter of engineering teams.
00:59:58He's always so calm, so Iceman, and that's a great value to have him as a CEO in our team.
01:00:06If there isn't already a big enough challenge, just being a new team, coming into a league like this,
01:00:12when you throw all of those different ingredients into the mix,
01:00:16it's going to be a tough weekend.
01:00:36If I had a dollar for everybody that said I would never get into SailGP or buy a team or any of that,
01:00:43I could probably be on a beach in St. Bart's right now.
01:00:46I didn't come into the sailing world the normal way in America,
01:00:51which is, you know, kind of families that are members of yacht clubs.
01:00:55I grew up with a single mom that worked three jobs, never met my dad,
01:00:59like we were usually behind on rent.
01:01:01It was always normal, right?
01:01:02And she always, you know, she always delivered.
01:01:05My mom always loved the ocean.
01:01:09She had an hour off on a weekend, would go to the beach, and she used to always say,
01:01:14anything's possible.
01:01:15I can do whatever I set my mind to, and sailing is not the impossible dream.
01:01:19I was talking to Josh about if you want to get the zero up early,
01:01:35at least do one, and then we can do the other one when we go out or something.
01:01:39Or if you want to just bang both of them out, that'd be good.
01:01:44Taylor Canfield, who drives the USA team, he's got a big jump that he needs to make.
01:01:49He's got the talent.
01:01:50He just needs to perform in terms of driving the boat.
01:01:53He's got to lead his team, and he's got to bring his team all together to be able to execute.
01:01:57It's a dream, and, you know, I've been trying to do, get to the top of the sport,
01:02:02you know, ever since I was a young kid.
01:02:06I started racing probably only a year after I started sailing.
01:02:10Any moment I got, I was spinning down there on the water and causing some trouble.
01:02:14I think probably the biggest thing that drove me to, you know, that next competitive level
01:02:19is that I had two buddies that I was always a little bit smaller
01:02:22and just a little further behind in my development as a kid,
01:02:25and I just wanted to beat them.
01:02:27And keep going for more, keep jabbing, keep pushing for that little extra bit,
01:02:33just always fighting for that little edge around the racetrack.
01:02:37I'm a fighter, and I'm just very competitive,
01:02:41and I'm here to, you know, get better and to win.
01:02:45We want to show the world what our country has and what we're made of,
01:02:49and not going to let anything get in the way.
01:02:52You pit Taylor Camfield against the people he's raced in the past, that's one thing.
01:02:59You pit him against Tom Slingsby and Diego Boutin and Pete Berling,
01:03:04and I don't care who you are. It adds another dimension to it.
01:03:12I think I'd consider Team USA underdogs for season five.
01:03:16Yeah, the end of season four was pretty brutal.
01:03:18USA! Oh, they fell! Oh, my Lord! Disaster!
01:03:23We were not proud of our results last year, right?
01:03:26That was a really hard pill to swallow every day we went out there.
01:03:31And, yeah, we had moments of brilliance,
01:03:33but it wasn't showing up in the results.
01:03:36Yeah, we're itching to go. We can't wait to get out there.
01:03:38We only get to do this 28 days a year,
01:03:40and today's the first.
01:03:42The U.S. team and the Italian team want to win,
01:03:46but I think they're quite realistic in the sense that
01:03:49that's going to be a really big challenge for them.
01:03:52They're going to want to be pushing, but they've got a big hill to climb.
01:03:55You want to keep the speed, keep the goal longer in the water,
01:03:59use it to win over.
01:04:00You've got to stay with the group,
01:04:01and you've got to stay kind of a clear air with the goal.
01:04:06If you haven't been here for the last five years,
01:04:08and you're getting the same time as the team that has been,
01:04:11it's really hard to catch up.
01:04:15The moment we've been waiting for is here,
01:04:17the start of a brand-new season of SailGP.
01:04:20Yeah, we're back. Season five preview.
01:04:22Everyone's job's not secure,
01:04:24and there's pressure on people to deliver out there.
01:04:26When you come to the U.S. team,
01:04:27I think they made a massive error
01:04:29by getting everyone off the boat
01:04:31and then coming in with a completely new team.
01:04:35I mean, a lot of people talk a lot of trash
01:04:37about American sailing and our teammates,
01:04:40but I expect our team to be competitive this year, right,
01:04:44and be in the points every week.
01:04:47We'll see. We feel pretty good,
01:04:48but we know we have a lot to learn.
01:04:50Now is the time to go out there and show them what we've got.
01:04:55We all know Jimmy Spihill,
01:04:56but he will be leading an Italian team this season
01:05:00as the 12th team.
01:05:01We've got the talent there,
01:05:13but as much as there is a lot of talent,
01:05:15there's not a lot of F-50 experience.
01:05:17And that's going to be the real challenge this year.
01:05:19Jimmy, how are you feeling today?
01:05:23I feel like I've still got the nerves
01:05:24and the excitement,
01:05:27the adrenaline as if I'm going on the boat.
01:05:31Man, I wish SailGP was around when I was a teenager.
01:05:35What I wouldn't do to be 20 years old right now
01:05:39getting on that boat.
01:05:40I know a lot of professional athletes,
01:05:43and I've watched them go through this.
01:05:46It was tough for Russell when he did it.
01:05:48There's always a moment
01:05:49that you wish you could be back
01:05:51in that high-pressure situation
01:05:53where you have to perform.
01:05:56I think it'll be hard for him, in a way,
01:05:58to not be on the boat in the future,
01:06:00but I think he's ready for it, to be honest.
01:06:03Yeah, I think he's ready.
01:06:10So we're getting closer and closer
01:06:17to the big moment,
01:06:18the first race of the 2025 season.
01:06:20Light breeze has been reported,
01:06:22so Thoy, you better be out in front
01:06:23because otherwise you're going to be back in the pack.
01:06:25We had very light marginal conditions
01:06:28which are challenging to Sali's boats in.
01:06:30Taylor and a few of our team members
01:06:32have a lot of time on M32s,
01:06:33which is a non-foiling catamaran.
01:06:35So in the lighter wind, you know,
01:06:37they actually have a tremendous amount of experience.
01:06:40What's going to be really crucial
01:06:41is hitting the line with speed.
01:06:43The boats are close to the line here.
01:06:45Nine seconds to go.
01:06:46Germany well-positioned but slow.
01:06:47United States on a good run
01:06:49towards the bottom end of the line,
01:06:50top of our screen.
01:06:51We're going to be go when the line turns.
01:06:53What?
01:06:54We're racing there.
01:06:56That was so tight by the Italian boat,
01:06:58but it looks like they've judged it perfectly
01:07:00at the bottom of the line, United States.
01:07:02I love the position of Taylor Canfield
01:07:04and that all-American crew
01:07:06as they drag race towards Mark 1.
01:07:07Who's going to be first to get on the foils?
01:07:09I think the United States looks strong
01:07:11to lead about one from here.
01:07:16And right now, the Americans are the best start.
01:07:18They've needed this for a long time.
01:07:19We're now tied with Spain,
01:07:20the winning tiebreaker.
01:07:22The Americans in the league
01:07:23with the Australians in the second,
01:07:24New Zealand in third.
01:07:25You can see on our leaderboard,
01:07:26Italy and Brazil.
01:07:27New teams to the league,
01:07:2810th and 11th.
01:07:29I think the other thing people should remember
01:07:31is this is actually the first day.
01:07:32It's a bit of their heart, tough man.
01:07:33We're going to cut him.
01:07:34We're going to get out of here.
01:07:35We're at last.
01:07:35These are very specific conditions here.
01:07:43They suited this U.S. team before.
01:07:45Here we go.
01:07:45This is it.
01:07:46Can the United States accelerate their boat?
01:07:48And yeah, taking it now.
01:07:50As they approach the finish here in Dubai,
01:07:53it looks like the USA
01:07:54with the perfect calculations.
01:07:56So race number one is in the books.
01:07:58It's U.S. SailGP
01:08:00that gets the first win.
01:08:05I'll fucking take that any day of the week.
01:08:07First win at SailGP.
01:08:08Let's go.
01:08:09USA SailGP wins the first race
01:08:12but ends up third overall here in Dubai.
01:08:16We were psyched that we were on the podium.
01:08:20The USA SailGP team,
01:08:21they should be very, very proud of this event.
01:08:24It's a huge validator
01:08:25that our hard work meant something.
01:08:28Appreciate the support, boys.
01:08:29You guys hope you'll be here one day.
01:08:32Other teams are looking at us going,
01:08:34wow, you guys made a lot of changes
01:08:36in the way you sail
01:08:36and that feels nice.
01:08:38We sailed well
01:08:38and we had a little celebration, you know.
01:08:41Like some dance, like EDM something.
01:08:44Real loud.
01:08:46Real fucking loud.
01:08:57Everybody was happy.
01:08:58Everybody maybe took a deep breath
01:09:01and went, all right, we survived Dubai.
01:09:03It's a good thing it was now
01:09:04Coach Gardner out right now.
01:09:05We fucking should all be proud of each other.
01:09:08Woo!
01:09:08Woo!
01:09:09Woo!
01:09:09Woo!
01:09:10Woo!
01:09:10Woo!

01:09:14Woo!
01:09:15Woo!
01:09:15Woo!
01:09:16Woo!
01:09:16Woo!
01:09:17Woo!

01:09:32Woo!
01:09:33Woo!
01:09:34Woo!
01:09:35Woo!
01:09:36Woo!
01:09:37Ok.
01:09:41Yes!
01:09:41Je vais aller first.
01:09:42Wait, what?
01:09:43Non, ce n'est pas qui a eu.
01:09:45Oh.
01:09:46Oui.
01:09:47Bad luck.
01:09:48Ok.
01:09:49Ready?
01:10:20...
01:10:30En Dubai, le first race was on the bottom end of the conditions.
01:10:35That means it wasn't very windy.
01:11:07Over a long season like this,
01:11:09there's going to be crashes.
01:11:10There's heavy penalty points
01:11:13if you cause damage or a collision.
01:11:16Don't try and go outside your capabilities yet.
01:11:18We have to play the long game here,
01:11:20and let's just watch them fall.
01:11:30Well, a beautiful day of racing here
01:11:32at the ITM New Zealand Sale Grand Prix Auckland.
01:11:35Lots of gusts and lulls out here to navigate.
01:11:37In Auckland, we went from one of the Spectrum in Dubai
01:11:40to the complete other end.
01:11:41It's going to be fantastic racing today out here.
01:11:44A little bit tricky, but a lot of fun.
01:11:46It's very gusty.
01:11:47You can see those dark patches of water.
01:11:49That's right-hand side of the screen.
01:11:51They're off the foil.
01:11:52Oh, there's a big gust of wind on board the US boat.
01:11:54Have a look at it.
01:11:56Oh, they plugged it.
01:11:57That could be a huge problem.
01:11:58That boat's going to be full of water right now.
01:12:01Disaster for US fans.
01:12:03What a mistake.
01:12:05USA again, a little slip up in the manoeuvre,
01:12:07bottom of our screen.
01:12:08They're off the foils.
01:12:09Another error in the manoeuvre there.
01:12:11They're hurting.
01:12:12Oh, no, you can't do that on a downwind leg in this breeze.
01:12:15Oh, Tim, I'm just going to hurt you.
01:12:17The stakes are hurting the United States sales GP team
01:12:20right now.
01:12:21The USA will finish in tenth with Brazil.
01:12:24We've missed that gate.
01:12:25It's been another dip by the Americans.
01:12:28They're at the bottom of the leaderboard again.
01:12:30After that breakthrough performance in Dubai,
01:12:32it seemed that Team USA was ready to finally take the next step.
01:12:37But the consistency they need still has not fully materialized.
01:12:43We got to see our team in conditions
01:12:45they've never, ever experienced on this boat,
01:12:48that was testing the most experienced teams out there.
01:12:52And here they were, holding their own.
01:12:54You can see right now Italy in third place,
01:12:57sailing well.
01:12:57Clearly, Ruggiero Tito enjoying these windy,
01:13:00shifty weather conditions.
01:13:01Now he's hunting down the Italians.
01:13:03Can Ruggiero Tito keep him behind?
01:13:05They've got a good position at the moment.
01:13:06Gero Tito on the Italian boat.
01:13:08Where have they found this form from?
01:13:10The Italians have been a team for mere weeks.
01:13:13It would be a triumph even if they were landing dead last.
01:13:18Italy, wow, they've had a strong race as well here in Auckland.
01:13:22Great first day of racing for Ruggiero Tito and his team.
01:13:26Perfect judgment by Red Bull Italy there.
01:13:28Dives across the line.
01:13:30It was like Usain Bolt giving us a dip finish on the 100 meters there.
01:13:33And the Italians light it up.
01:13:35Repul Italy, coming in fast.
01:13:41An incredible performance by the Italians here in Auckland.
01:13:48Jimmy's going to be strategic about this.
01:13:51He's not going to just be shooting from the hip.
01:13:54He's going to be very calculated.
01:13:57If you're racing against Jimmy Spithill and a team Jimmy Spithill is leading, that's a cohesive, well-organized team.
01:14:07The deeper we got into the season, the more the fleet unraveled.
01:14:10I mean, teams were crashing all around us.
01:14:12Fuck!
01:14:17Fuck, idiots.
01:14:20Fuck!
01:14:21I mean, in Sydney, the US team never even made it out to the race track.
01:14:27Five minutes before the first practice race of the day, Team USA being towed towards the starting box.
01:14:33Hold the wing, hold the wing, hold the wing.
01:14:34Oh, look out!
01:14:35Oh, the USA have got a lot of camera in that wing.
01:14:36Oh, it's in the wrong way.
01:14:37No, no, no.
01:14:38Oh, cock size!
01:14:39Oh, cock size!
01:14:50To get you, we've got a broken wing.
01:14:51Again, broken wing on USA.
01:14:53The wing was inverted while they were still towing.
01:14:57Basically very similar to what we've seen for USA and Bermuda.
01:15:01Unfortunately, they sustained very severe damage on the main elements.
01:15:07Wow, hard to believe that the US won't even make it to race day.
01:15:12Getting rid of Jimmy was a really big moment in the sailing world.
01:15:17Taylor Canfield's a great sailor, but Jimmy, whether it's sailing on the boat or leading the team,
01:15:22he's at a different level, so.
01:15:24Clearly the biggest issue for USA is in the sailing squad.
01:15:28Removing Jimmy was mind-bogglingly stupid.
01:15:37As time's going on, our goal is, guys, let's just keep our climb up the ladder.
01:15:48Let's keep consistent, keep our learning, let's not try and run before we can walk.
01:15:52And we followed that process, and it started to pay real dividends.
01:15:56The surprise performance of the day was from the new team, Red Bull Italy, continuing to surge forward.
01:16:02You guys, you're doing well and improving all the time.
01:16:14Yeah, really proud of all the guys on board that try to keep it up for the next one.
01:16:18I still am trying to ride this sort of tightrope of what is the right amount of feedback,
01:16:28and what is the right amount of letting them go out and learn some of these lessons themselves.
01:16:37I'm surprised the US team are struggling. I think it's one of their really good
01:16:41strengths is this light wind sailing, but they're struggling today out there.
01:16:44We'll get there and we will be competitive. It's going to take some time, but I'm confident we'll get there.
01:17:00The California doubleheader brings the world's best sailors to one of the most challenging tracks on the planet.
01:17:05Welcome to the Oracle San Francisco Sail Grand Prix.
01:17:1413 seconds to go. I like New Zealand and Italy in the middle of the line.
01:17:19USLGP just ahead. So Taylor Canfield now sits in third place for USLGP, a team desperate in need of a win.
01:17:26Oh, no! The US team, they've had an absolute howler on that bottom roundup. They got too high, they got loose.
01:17:32They parked it and they don't control the timing. Not enough horsepower going in on that wing to sheet it back in.
01:17:37It gets real high, real loose. So the Americans were sitting in third and they absolutely come
01:17:43to almost a complete stop. They are now dropping back. Oh, man. Oh, man. Hold on, guys. Oh, boy. Oh, boy.
01:17:51It'll be Red Bull Italy coming in in eighth place here in San Francisco. Some stellar racing by the brand new squad.
01:17:58I'm very proud of Jimmy. He has come from being a fabulous athlete to a great leader. Jimmy always saw things that I didn't see.
01:18:20I certainly wasn't intimidated about starting again with a new team and putting this group together.
01:18:26Yeah, I knew it was going to be tough. We're going to be the newest team. We're going to have the least
01:18:31amount of preparation. But that was actually really exciting for me and really motivating. And coming
01:18:36together as a group, building and building and working our way through the season.
01:18:39Trying to identify the mode. You want to step ahead?
01:18:42I think there's nothing more rewarding. So from my point of view, the momentum is clearly on our side.
01:18:49The sport's an endurance race. It is not a sprint.
01:18:59You've got to learn from your mistakes and you can't ever give up.
01:19:03That is a absolute shocker.
01:19:18I'm not at all afraid of having to start from the bottom and fight my way up to the top.
01:19:23I mean, I've really been doing that since I was a kid.
01:19:39I was the only one who I was very excited.
01:20:00I'm not at all, I mean.
01:20:03I'm not at all right.
01:20:05I was a kid.
