00:00Hello and welcome to Based in Kent. I'm Ronnie and this is the show that introduces you to
00:20original music artists from around the county. Each artist will be here with me in the studio
00:24talking about and performing their own original music. Today I'm joined by the frontman of the
00:29emotionally raw alternative rock band from Ashford Shoelace. Thanks for being here. Hello. So I'm very
00:36excited to hear your music but before we get into your songs today I want to know Shoelace as a band
00:41name where is that coming from? It's short to the point and yeah I didn't want it to be like I didn't
00:52put too much thought into it to be honest but yeah I just like it. So almost instinctual it's
01:03kind of like yeah okay I found the one that works I'm going with it. Yeah pretty much. Nice okay great
01:08so your first song for us today it's called Mr. Nobody. I feel like the title kind of paints a
01:15little bit of a picture of what it is but tell me a little bit about it. It's sort of
01:19like there's been lots of scenarios in my life where I sort of felt invisible personally and
01:25that I guess the song is like an expression of that but a lot of times in with my songs
01:31I like to sort of write them so that they're also kind of generalized a little bit so it's
01:36not like entirely like I'm just singing personally about my own like experiences
01:42because yeah like everyone everyone is nobody like in the sense like so really touching on
01:51that raw emotion aspect I I can't wait to hear it take it away sure
01:56I've been nobody
02:03for so long
02:09just waiting
02:13you're missing for lady lock so turn her head
02:24me
02:27because I am
02:41Mr. Nobody
02:46Cause I am
02:51Mr. Nobody
02:55And we are all the same
03:03And we are all the same
03:17Please
03:23Somebody
03:27The mood
03:33Is just how sad
03:35I am
03:39The silence
03:43Is just
03:45Too loud
03:47But maybe
03:49Lady
03:51Luck
03:53Can hear
03:55My
03:57Please
03:59Cause I am
04:13Mr. Nobody
04:17Cause I am
04:21Mr. Nobody
04:25And we are all the same
04:31And we are all the same
04:35And we are all the same
04:41We
04:47We are all the same
04:53And we are all the same
04:59And we are all the same
05:01And we are all the same
05:03Some very impactful lyrics intertwined in there
05:06in there so what is the process for writing a song look like for you um I'm very like like
05:15instinctual and sort of improvisational um I generally I just I just bash around with a guitar
05:21and make wailing noises and see what happens most of I I don't try too hard with words I
05:31generally think of a theme or like an experience or something like that and I'll try and sort of
05:38say phrases that come to mind as I'm playing with a melody as well so it kind of makes more sense and
05:45then after I can sort of I pick it I pick it apart like I sort of go over it again just like a first
05:52draft and then like but it sort of happens less um like you know but it's it's kind of just more
06:01I'm quite a chill approach I guess you could say okay well I think I I think I have a guess as to
06:07what the theme of this next song is quietly is the name of it tell me a little bit about that one
06:11well um it's kind of the name itself is kind of like a it's kind of a joke because um it's one of
06:19my like louder songs uh but it's it's kind of like it it's my most sort of personal song in terms
06:25of like writing from my experience um and then putting that directly into words and I can't wait
06:33to hear it take it away sure yeah
06:49there's nothing to think of everything I've lived through a love I thought would last for years
07:10Left a broken mind in tears
07:14A girl was dying on my floor
07:18Trying to find a fix to score
07:23And quietly I lost my mind
07:36Picking up the pieces that they left behind
07:44And quietly I find my way out
07:52Never knowing which way is up or down
07:59Oh, I'm falling, falling, falling
08:04Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
08:09Spring it seemed to me
08:19Well, it never seemed to me
08:23I met another junkie who needs someone to hold on to
08:31But a little down the line, she's a stranger in my mind
08:38Oh, it never seems to go my way
08:43I never seem to get it right
08:54Quietly I lost my mind
09:02Picking up the pieces that they left behind
09:10Quietly I find my way out
09:17Never knowing which way is up or down
09:24Oh, I'm falling, falling, falling now
09:31Oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I
10:01can change, I know that it will stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay,
10:31stay, stay, stay, stay,
11:01stay, stay, stay, stay,
11:31stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay
12:01Well, now is my favorite part of the show, where we are going to play a quick-fire question round.
12:07So a timer's going to come up on the monitor between us.
12:10It's going to start counting down once I've asked the first question.
12:14And you're just going to answer as many as you can within the time we have.
12:18Oh, golly, gosh, okay.
12:20Just to get to know you a little better.
12:22So do you prefer live or recorded music?
12:26Live.
12:27Live music, okay.
12:28Tea or coffee?
12:29Coffee.
12:30Easy.
12:31Writing or performing your music?
12:38Performing.
12:39Oh, a bit of an internal debate on that one, okay.
12:42Winter or summer?
12:43Winter.
12:44Oh, that was easy.
12:45Favorite song you have written so far?
12:50Quietly.
12:52Okay.
12:54Morning or evening?
12:55Evening.
12:56Okay.
12:57You're just flying through.
12:59I love it.
12:59First song you learned how to play?
13:03Oh.
13:06It took me a long time before I started learning songs.
13:08So probably Love or Please Stay by Bring Me The Horizon.
13:15Nothing But Thieves.
13:17Okay.
13:17Yeah.
13:17Interesting choice.
13:18Yeah.
13:19Sweet or savory?
13:21Savory.
13:22Okay.
13:23First artist to inspire you?
13:25Jeff Buckley.
13:25Oh, oh, that's a good choice.
13:27Yeah.
13:28Okay.
13:29Time alone or time with mates?
13:32Time alone.
13:33Oh.
13:34Yeah.
13:34Okay.
13:35Everyone needs their space.
13:37Yeah.
13:37Your favorite fellow Kent musician?
13:40Oh, God.
13:46Danny.
13:47I'll say Danny, my drummer.
13:49He's incredible.
13:51Yeah.
13:51That's my answer.
13:52Fair.
13:53Favorite gig you've attended?
13:54Um, I saw, I'll say, I saw James Marriott once and Car Lights made me cry.
14:10Yeah.
14:10Really?
14:11Yeah, he did a really good job on that song that time.
14:14Like, someone threw a rose at him and everything.
14:15It was pretty, it was a pretty good, pretty good concert.
14:17Okay.
14:18Good, good memory to have.
14:20Dream venue to perform in?
14:22Oh, I have no idea.
14:24Probably, like, just somewhere where I get paid.
14:30Every artist's dream, is it not?
14:33Well, that very nicely wrapped up our time for that game.
14:37So your next song today, The Greatest Lie.
14:40Tell me, tell me a little bit of, behind that one.
14:42Um, yeah, basically that one is a, actually it's not a personal thing, but that's more
14:48towards the general kind of, like, I can borrow that a bit more generally.
14:52Um, and it's just basically about, um, when some, some, being with someone, it's like
14:59a relationship thing, who turns out to be someone else entirely from who you thought
15:04they were.
15:05Um, and sort of that kind of self, there's like a bit of self annoyance, but also just
15:10at the person and look like, what are you doing?
15:13You know, but.
15:14Well, I'm sure people out there will be able to relate to this, to take it away when
15:17you're ready.
15:18Cool.
15:18Cool.
15:19Cool.
15:28Oh, it has a goal
15:44You gave me everything
15:51Then you took it all away
15:56Here inside a cardboard box
16:00I'll never trust again
16:03And if I'm being honest
16:07I know it never held
16:11The greatest lie you ever told
16:15Was the one I told myself
16:18Do you still have the pictures
16:22Chasing dragons on your shelf
16:27The tiny little guys
16:30We made the flowers that you have
16:34And so much love
16:42And so much love
16:49But you're not all to blame
16:57No, this lonely boy is too
17:01Begging for someone to stay
17:06I thought that it was you, yeah
17:10So you still play piano
17:13Dancing up and down the gears
17:17Oh, searching for a final chord
17:22That's always our free show
17:29I bet you didn't notice in the moments that I cried
17:37Realizing that you were just a moment passing by
17:44And keep your head above the clouds
17:49Be careful not to fall
17:52Or you might have to finally face
17:56The writing on the wall
17:59Yeah, the writing, writing, writing, writing
18:04And so much love
18:12And so much love
18:19And so much love
18:27And so much love
18:33And so much love
18:37And so much love
18:39And so much love
18:49Wow
18:49Okay
18:49I mean, it certainly keeps with the theme
18:52Of the emotionally raw music that you
18:56You have
18:57But no, I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there
19:00Who unfortunately can relate to that
19:03But it's a well-written, beautiful song
19:06Even if it's not from the most beautiful of things
19:08Yeah
19:09But before we let you go today
19:12I want to know about some advice you've been given
19:16Because this music industry is difficult
19:19And people are always struggling in it
19:21And some people give up on the dream
19:23So what advice have you been given
19:26That keeps you pursuing it?
19:30You just have to do what calls to you
19:34In your life, really
19:36It doesn't matter what anyone else says
19:38Parents, teachers, just anyone
19:43If you feel like something is meant for you to do
19:47Then you owe it to yourself to do it, basically
19:50And I think that's the most important part
19:54It's hard
19:55It gets really hard
19:55Doing whatever
19:56Whatever it is that you need to do
19:57It gets really hard
19:58But
19:59If there is nothing else
20:02There is nothing else
20:03Well, I love that advice
20:05That's very beautifully put
20:07But we're running a bit tight on time
20:09So let's just jump right in
20:11To your next song today
20:13Alone Again
20:14Okay, cool
20:15Thank you
20:16piano plays softly
20:46piano plays softly
21:16piano plays softly
21:46piano plays softly
22:16piano plays softly
22:46piano plays softly
23:16piano plays softly
23:46piano plays softly
