00:00Hello and welcome to Based in Kent. I'm Ronnie and this is the show that introduces you to
00:20original music artists from around the county. Each artist will be here with me in the studio
00:24talking about and performing their own original music. Today I'm joined by the frontman of the
00:29emotionally raw alternative rock band from Ashford Shoelace. Thanks for being here. Hello. So I'm very
00:36excited to hear your music but before we get into your songs today I want to know Shoelace as a band
00:41name where is that coming from? It's short to the point and yeah I didn't want it to be like I didn't
00:52put too much thought into it to be honest but yeah I just like it. So almost instinctual it's
01:03kind of like yeah okay I found the one that works I'm going with it. Yeah pretty much. Nice okay great
01:08so your first song for us today it's called Mr. Nobody. I feel like the title kind of paints a
01:15little bit of a picture of what it is but tell me a little bit about it. It's sort of
01:19like there's been lots of scenarios in my life where I sort of felt invisible personally and
01:25that I guess the song is like an expression of that but a lot of times in with my songs
01:31I like to sort of write them so that they're also kind of generalized a little bit so it's
01:36not like entirely like I'm just singing personally about my own like experiences
01:42because yeah like everyone everyone is nobody like in the sense like so really touching on
01:51that raw emotion aspect I I can't wait to hear it take it away sure
01:56I've been nobody
02:03for so long
02:09just waiting
02:13you're missing for lady lock so turn her head
02:24me
02:27because I am
02:41Mr. Nobody
02:46Cause I am
02:51Mr. Nobody
02:55And we are all the same
03:03And we are all the same
03:17Please
03:23Somebody
03:27The mood
03:33Is just how sad
03:35I am
03:39The silence
03:43Is just
03:45Too loud
03:47But maybe
03:49Lady
03:51Luck
03:53Can hear
03:55My
03:57Please
03:59Cause I am
04:13Mr. Nobody
04:17Cause I am
04:21Mr. Nobody
04:25And we are all the same
04:31And we are all the same
04:35And we are all the same
04:41We
04:47We are all the same
04:53And we are all the same
04:59And we are all the same
05:01And we are all the same
05:03Some very impactful lyrics intertwined in there
05:06in there so what is the process for writing a song look like for you um I'm very like like
05:15instinctual and sort of improvisational um I generally I just I just bash around with a guitar
05:21and make wailing noises and see what happens most of I I don't try too hard with words I
05:31generally think of a theme or like an experience or something like that and I'll try and sort of
05:38say phrases that come to mind as I'm playing with a melody as well so it kind of makes more sense and
05:45then after I can sort of I pick it I pick it apart like I sort of go over it again just like a first
05:52draft and then like but it sort of happens less um like you know but it's it's kind of just more
06:01I'm quite a chill approach I guess you could say okay well I think I I think I have a guess as to
06:07what the theme of this next song is quietly is the name of it tell me a little bit about that one
06:11well um it's kind of the name itself is kind of like a it's kind of a joke because um it's one of
06:19my like louder songs uh but it's it's kind of like it it's my most sort of personal song in terms
06:25of like writing from my experience um and then putting that directly into words and I can't wait
06:33to hear it take it away sure yeah
06:49there's nothing to think of everything I've lived through a love I thought would last for years
07:10Left a broken mind in tears
07:14A girl was dying on my floor
07:18Trying to find a fix to score
07:23And quietly I lost my mind
07:36Picking up the pieces that they left behind
07:44And quietly I find my way out
07:52Never knowing which way is up or down
07:59Oh, I'm falling, falling, falling
08:04Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
08:09Spring it seemed to me
08:19Well, it never seemed to me
08:23I met another junkie who needs someone to hold on to
08:31But a little down the line, she's a stranger in my mind
08:38Oh, it never seems to go my way
08:43I never seem to get it right
08:54Quietly I lost my mind
09:02Picking up the pieces that they left behind
09:10Quietly I find my way out
09:17Never knowing which way is up or down
09:24Oh, I'm falling, falling, falling now
09:31Oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I, oh, I
10:01can change, I know that it will stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay, stay,
