00:00How do Europeans feel about paying taxes?
00:07The latest Eurobarometer survey on taxation is clear.
00:12Citizens won't change.
00:14In the EU, nearly 90% of the revenue available to national governments comes from taxes.
00:20However, only 1 in 5 EU citizens believes that tax contributions in their country
00:26are proportional to income and wealth, with most respondents expressing skepticism.
00:32The system is considered most fair in Finland and Luxembourg,
00:36while in Hungary and Croatia most people think it's not fair at all.
00:40Most respondents support minimum corporate tax,
00:43taxing the wealthiest individuals and environmental levies.
00:47Nearly 6 in 10 EU citizens favor using fiscal measures
00:51to discourage the usage or consumption of environmentally harmful goods and polluting energy.
00:59Among those who agree with higher taxes for improved public services,
01:03nearly half would first target tobacco and alcohol,
01:07and the third would increase taxes on investment income, like interest or rent.
01:12As for what citizens want the EU to prioritize in terms of taxation,
01:16the number one issue is tackling tax avoidance and evasion,
01:21which costs member states billions of euros each year.
01:25The second priority is preventing double taxation between EU countries.
