00:00Shanu Sharma
00:01If you've ever dreamt of making it big in Bollywood, chances are this is the one name
00:05that could change your life or crush your dreams.
00:07She's the casting director for Yash Raj Films, the woman who discovered Ranveer Singh, Anushka
00:12Sharma, Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednikar.
00:14And the internet has a lot to say about her lately.
00:17But Shanu didn't start on a red carpet.
00:19She grew up between India and South Africa, worked as a waitress at 14, dropped out of
00:23school and returned to Mumbai at 17 with no plan.
00:26A bold shaved head got her a stint with Manish Malhotra, then styling gigs, then assisting
00:31on films, until her big break casting Khoya Khoya Chant and then YRF Kim Calling.
00:36From Love Kar The End to Ekta Tiger to Sultan, if it's a YRF blockbuster, she's behind
00:41the scenes.
00:42But lately Shanu's casting methods have landed her in hot water.
00:45Mirzapur actor Isha Talwar shared that during an audition, she was asked to break down and
00:50cry in the middle of a crowded restaurant.
00:52It shattered my confidence, she said.
00:54YRICOM actor Biju Thangjam had a similar experience being told to perform a scene in a cafe with
00:59strangers watching.
01:01And Abhinav Shukla recalls being told bluntly, you're a good looking guy, that's it, spark
01:06is missing.
01:07Harsh honesty or her casting style gone too far?
01:10And yet, she's also the one who pushes unknowns into superstardom.
01:13Ahan Pandey, for instance, first approached at 19, waited 9 years and trained relentlessly.
01:18Today, his debut Sayara is breaking records.
01:22And when Ranveer Singh, her most famous find, left YRF's talent wing, there was no drama.
01:27So is Shanu Sharma Bollywood's star maker or its toughest gatekeeper?
01:31Maybe both.
01:32One thing's certain, she holds the keys.
01:34And when you walk in, your fate comes down to two words, yes or no.
