00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the songs that we'll never
00:11get tired of dancing to.
00:20Number 10, I Feel Love, Donna Summer.
00:30This dreamy, futuristic track is considered one of the finest of the disco era.
00:34Summer's seminal recording reached number one in several countries and number six on
00:38the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
00:40Listening to it today, you can hardly believe this came out in 1977.
00:51Indeed, this recording marked the beginning of modern electronic dance music, combining
00:56synthesized loops with a bass drum and hi-hat.
00:58Summer's summer hit influenced many artists, including David Bowie, The Human League, and
01:03Kylie Minogue.
01:04Beyoncé even sampled it in her song Summer Renaissance.
01:07What a legacy.
01:15Number 9, Sweet Dreams Are Made of This, Eurythmics.
01:25Once you hear it, you never forget it.
01:27One of Eurythmics' most popular songs, Sweet Dreams has been a long-lasting hit.
01:32The synth-pop single has been certified gold in the United States.
01:35It's unusual for dance music, especially electronic pop, to sound fatalistic and foreboding.
01:40But the juxtaposition between the sad melody, the cryptic lyrics, and the up-tempo beat gives
01:45the song a haunting quality that is just irresistible.
01:55Marilyn Manson did famously cover it, after all.
01:57The more danceable original is still a lively favorite with film and TV shows.
02:02This eventually led to Sweet Dreams being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2020.
02:06And who are we to disagree?
02:16Number 8, Yeah!
02:17Usher featuring Little John and Ludacris.
02:19The moment you hear those blaring synthesized trumpets, you instantly know what song is
02:28playing.
02:29This track was the longest-running single of 2004, topping 12 charts worldwide.
02:34With its iconic riff and eponymous exclamations, this crunk and R&B crossover that Usher performs
02:39with Little John and Ludacris is inescapably familiar.
02:42The song's nightclub-appropriate lyrics and mixture of up-tempo rap and ballad verses were
02:47a winning formula that never fails to pull us onto the dance floor.
02:56Sure enough, Yeah! has become a perennial favorite, winning a Grammy Award for its iconic music
03:02video.
03:02All we can say to that is, yeah!
03:08Number 7, I Will Survive, Gloria Gaynor.
03:12Empowerment has never been so groovy.
03:20One of the biggest hits of the disco era, Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive was composed by Dino
03:25Ficaris after he was fired from Motown Records.
03:27Ficaris gave the song to Gaynor, who instantly knew she had a hit on her hands.
03:32Sure enough, in 1980, it won the Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording.
03:36In Gaynor's powerful vocals, the song transformed into a female empowerment and LGBTQIA plus anthem
03:48that has touched millions worldwide.
03:49I Will Survive has been interpreted by many artists throughout the years.
03:53It was also preserved in the Library of Congress in 2016, so we can be assured that it will
03:58survive.
03:59Number 6, Can't Get You Out of My Head, Kylie Minogue.
04:16We haven't been able to get this song out of our heads in a long time.
04:19Kylie Minogue's appropriately named anthem reached number 1 in 40 countries worldwide.
04:24It was certified platinum by the BPI three times and reached No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
04:30It's no secret why this song became such a beloved club staple.
04:40Here's its hauntingly catchy la-la-la hook sung with Minogue's light-breathy voice.
04:45But also, its minor key melody and driving rhythms, fusing disco, techno, and pop,
04:50make Can't Get You Out of My Head such a winning formula for dance.
04:53We are always out on the club floor with this one.
05:10It's an oldie but a goodie.
05:12Chubby Checker was not the first one to record the twist,
05:14which was originally written and performed by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters in 1958.
05:23But it was Checker's 1960 rendition that launched this song into the stratosphere,
05:30topping the Billboard Hot 100 in two separate chart runs.
05:33It was the very first song to do so.
05:35The propulsive rhythm and round harmony of the song are a good temptation to dance even now.
05:41The twist even led to a dance craze of the same name.
05:44Finally, Checker's version was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
05:48What a twist!
05:56Number 4.
05:57Uptown Funk.
05:58Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.
06:00This is a modern dance classic that nevertheless doesn't feel limited to our time.
06:13There's just something timeless about Uptown Funk,
06:15a throwback to 1980s funk composed by DJ Mark Ronson and sung by Bruno Mars.
06:20It's an elegant mix of soul, pop, and even boogie-woogie.
06:23The wholesome male bravado of its lyrics also helps.
06:32Its energetic and cheerfully catchy rhythms helped keep the song in the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 consecutive weeks.
06:38And of course, it has been parodied numerous times, which is an indicator of greatness.
06:43Don't believe us?
06:44Just watch.
06:45Don't believe me?
06:45Just watch.
06:46Come on!
06:53Number 3.
06:54Groove is in the Heart.
06:55D-Light.
06:56The chills that you spill up my back
06:58Keep me filled with satisfaction when we're done
07:01Satisfaction of what's become
07:03Speaking of classics,
07:05D-Light's Groove is in the Heart is a delight.
07:08This late 80s hit reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
07:11It combines hip-hop, funk, salsa, and several samples of other tunes into one groovy composition.
07:25There's even a rap interlude thrown in for good measure.
07:28Rolling Stone magazine included the track on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time,
07:33and Billboard itself ranked it as number 2 on its 2025 list of the 100 best dance songs of all time.
07:39This groove, we do deeply dig.
07:48Number 2.
07:49YMCA.
07:50The Village People.
07:57It's fun to stay at the...
07:59Wait, do we really need to finish it?
08:01The longevity of the Village People's brassy, upbeat ode to the Young Men's Christian Association
08:06is truly amazing, and played at all kinds of events throughout the United States.
08:10It has since become a gay anthem, a club anthem, and an anthem for the Donald Trump administration, apparently.
08:17This was much to the Village People's disapproval.
08:19Still, it's no wonder this song has appealed across the decades.
08:22It's fun to stay at the...
08:24Y-M-C-A!
08:26The track's fun rhythm, triumphant trumpets, cheerfully optimistic lyrics, and corresponding cheerleader dance
08:36make this a bona fide classic of dance music, and just music in general.
08:40YMCA was inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2020, and there's no need to wonder why.
08:46Y-M-C-A!

09:10You can dance, you can jive.
09:21For dance music with a truly timeless melody, look no further than this 70s disco classic by this internationally popular Swedish group.
09:29A Euro pop twist on American disco, Dancing Queen merges a sweet melody, heartening lyrics,
09:34a beautifully well-written harmonic theme, and soaring vocals to create a classic number we will always want to dance to.
09:40It was a worldwide hit, and is a bestseller to this day, with more than 19 million weekly streams on Spotify in 2022.
09:55And of course, it has garnered many covers.
09:58We'll always dig this Dancing Queen.
