Red Sox Starting Pitcher Lucas Giolito Joins The Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon
Transcript
00:00as he's walking in now by Lucas Giolito of the Boston Red Sox.
00:03It's interesting talking to Lou.
00:05And we just wrapped up with Lou Merloni a few moments ago
00:08to hear him and just say, oh, well, you know,
00:12the guys come into, either one is fine,
00:14where you guys come in and, well, it starts at spring training.
00:18They learn about it when they first get here.
00:20And it's something that the guys still buzz about
00:22after that Jimmy Fun trip down to Fort Myers.
00:25So as mentioned, joining us now,
00:27Lucas Giolito of the Boston Red Sox joining us here.
00:30Thanks for coming on and joining us here on day two.
00:31We appreciate it.
00:32Good, good, yeah.
00:33How are you doing, Gus?
00:33We're doing great.
00:34We're doing great.
00:35Real quick, Rob Bradford was on with us earlier.
00:37He told me you said you'll get a baseball isn't boring tattoo
00:41if you guys win the World Series.
00:42How did he rope you into that?
00:43Yeah, why not?
00:44I don't know.
00:45He's rope you into, like, half a baseball, I think.
00:46It's not just you.
00:47It's like a lot of people out there.
00:49He loves his branding.
00:52Yeah, he did it with Joe Kelly,
00:54who was a former teammate of mine when the Dodgers won.
00:57And then he extended the offer to me.
01:00And I said, yeah, why not?
01:01I'll do it.
01:02Do you get to pick the placement, or does he pick the placement?
01:05I'll probably pick the placement.
01:06Okay, very good.
01:07Yeah.
01:07You guys can get, like, Thelma and Louise-style tattoo.
01:09He's already got one.
01:10He already got one.
01:11Rob's already got one.
01:12That's a good point.
01:13I guess he doesn't need another one.
01:15Well, you're here in year two with the Boston Red Sox.
01:17What have you come to learn about the Telethon, the Jimmy Fund,
01:21and the Red Sox, and your involvement there?
01:24Yeah, I mean, how big it is, how cool it is, you know,
01:27for us as players to be able to utilize our platform for a great cause
01:33in the Jimmy Fund.
01:35You know, how much it means to this organization, the city,
01:41all the people here, all the great work that's done
01:44to help fight cancer, it's just great to be a part of.
01:48What's that spring training visit like when all the kids come down
01:51to Fort Myers and you get to spend some time with them?
01:53Oh, it's great.
01:54Yeah, it really, you know, puts things into perspective for us.
01:58You know, we get to play this game for a living.
02:01You know, it's a kid's game at the end of the day.
02:03It's a sport.
02:05And, you know, it's high pressure.
02:07Stakes are high.
02:07But any time that we get to spend time with the kids
02:11and kind of realize, you know, that what we do, we're very used to it.
02:18It's our job at times.
02:21It's very fun.
02:23But to be able to, you know, kind of share that with the kids
02:27and, you know, make their day in any way possible,
02:32it makes it very important.
02:34It's one of the many areas where the money can go to help.
02:37That funds or helps fund the Jimmy Fund trip every year down to spring training,
02:41877-738-1234, onlinejimmyfund.org.
02:45Or you can text to give any amount by texting KCANCER to 56512.
02:49It's the easiest way to do it.
02:50Just to text away, again, about 3.7 million more than that
02:53and counting here today on day two.
02:56You guys have dropped the last couple games, but comfortably,
03:00well, compared to the last few years anyway, comfortably in a playoff spot.
03:04How has this year been going for you guys,
03:07and how do you feel down the stretch going into hopefully a postseason run?
03:11Yeah, it's been good.
03:11I think that it's been a super formative year compared, you know,
03:17last year I wasn't involved.
03:18I was kind of watching from afar, and I saw, you know,
03:21a bunch of our young talent developing at the big league level,
03:24taking some big steps forward.
03:26And then this year it's even more so.
03:30So we've had more additions, you know, I like the kids have come up
03:34and made huge impacts.
03:39The returning guys, you know, continuing to make big leaps forward.
03:46You know, talking about being part of the starting rotation,
03:48I'm just so happy for and I'm so impressed with Brian Baio, his development.
03:53You know, he's really turned into a true top-of-the-line starter for us.
04:00So for me, it's kind of like an older guy.
04:03You know, it's crazy.
04:04I have to say that now.
04:05But it is that way, especially on this team with all of our young talent,
04:09just to be a part of, you know, the excitement,
04:13be a part of, you know, just a really overall talented team in many facets
04:21that, you know, hopefully we have a really good core to make a playoff run
04:26this year and then years in the future.
04:28For being out last year, like you said, watching it,
04:31do you appreciate it more now?
04:33Or do you view it a little bit differently,
04:35getting the ball every fifth day after, you know, what happened a year ago?
04:38It's so much more fun.
04:39Yeah, being able to actually contribute and be a part of the team.
04:44When I signed here, I signed to give this team quality innings,
04:50you know, be a reliable starting pitcher that can go deep into games,
04:54help out with the bullpen, and give us good chances to win.
04:59And I wasn't able to do that last year.
05:01The entire year, I'm out rehabbing my elbow.
05:03So it definitely left a lot to be desired.
05:06So now this year, actually being a part of the team for real,
05:12helping us win, you know, as we continue to push and push towards the playoffs,
05:18it's been a lot of fun, especially doing it here in Boston.
05:21You know, it seems like every pitcher, though, is inevitably out for like a season.
05:26Is that something like you and other pitchers talk about?
05:27Like, hey, if you've had four good seasons in a row,
05:29like it's kind of coming at some point.
05:32It's almost nobody can avoid it, it seems like.
05:34Yeah, there's a few guys, and the guys that, you know,
05:39their elbow just lasts forever, and they never have a major injury.
05:42It's like you're a unicorn now in today's day and age of pitching.
05:47I think just so much is demanded of us.
05:49Velocity has become more and more important.
05:51Guys are going out there ripping stuff as hard as they can,
05:54because you have to if you want to get outs at this level.
05:56So, yeah, I mean, it's kind of become a rite of passage,
06:01getting a Tommy John surgery or getting, you know, something done.
06:07Unfortunately, that's the way it is, but that's the way it is.
06:10So, you're kind of right.
06:12Like, at some point, there's always that period where it's like,
06:15okay, time to get this fixed up.
06:17So, luckily, the science and the medicine is so advanced now
06:23to where the, you know, return to play, return to play with, you know,
06:29the same level of stuff and feel, it's getting more that way.
06:35You know, there's complications every once in a while,
06:37but for the most part, it's just you got to, you know,
06:41fight back from whatever injury it is.
06:44Well, the rite of passage is an interesting way of putting it.
06:47I know Keeve is chomping at the bit for some non-baseball questions.
06:50I'll give you one kind of in the middle,
06:52because you said something that jumped out.
06:54We watched The Clubhouse on Netflix,
06:57and you even said at one point, like, you feel like you're on the team,
07:01but you're kind of separate from the team,
07:03working out and rehabbing on the side.
07:05I guess, what was the experience like last year,
07:07kind of having your every move, the team's every move filmed on Netflix?
07:11What was that experience like for you and the team?
07:13I thought it was cool.
07:16You know, I wish we were doing it this year compared to last year.
07:20It's more exciting, more fun storylines,
07:23but in general, I thought they did a great job.
07:28And, yeah, I didn't mind it too much.
07:33Again, I wasn't playing, so, you know, I didn't have –
07:38I wasn't asked, like, hey, can you get mic –
07:40can you put a mic on when you go out and pitch or anything like that?
07:43I know other guys were asked to do that,
07:46and, you know, it depended on the player.
07:47Some guys were more comfortable than others,
07:49but overall, I feel like the participation was good.
07:54You know, it kind of painted a pretty solid picture
07:56of, like, what we go through as players and on-field, off-field.
08:00So, yeah, I thought it was a cool experience.
08:03All right, I know you're a huge movie and TV fan.
08:05What's the best thing you've watched recently?
08:08Best thing I watched recently was Andor.
08:11Yes.
08:11Yeah, I'm a big star –
08:13Excellent.
08:13Fantastic.
08:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:15Amazing.
08:15I'm a big Star Wars fan, and I actually –
08:19I got away from it over the last few years.
08:21I was a little disappointed when Disney took over Lucasfilm, LucasArts,
08:28and I didn't like the movies they did at all.
08:34All three of them I thought were terrible.
08:37So – and then they put out a few series.
08:39Mandalorian I wasn't a big fan of.
08:41Some of the other stuff I wasn't into.
08:44And so I was kind of sleeping on the Andor series.
08:49I actually saw Rogue One in theaters, and I was like,
08:51oh, they did a good job with this.
08:53Yeah, yeah, that was very good.
08:53This is a good movie.
08:56But I didn't even know anything about it,
08:58and I actually – I set up a Disney Plus subscription.
09:01I'm like, what's this Andor?
09:02Oh, this is the guy from the Rogue One movie.
09:04Yes.
09:05And I started watching it, and I was like, oh, my God.
09:07Yeah, it's amazing.
09:08Yeah, it's amazing.
09:09It's the best writing.
09:11Best writing, best character development.
09:14In all of Star Wars, like the entire universe combined, in my opinion.
09:18If it wasn't a Star Wars show, it'd be like, wow, this is like top-tier Emmy television.
09:25And even being a Star Wars show, it is that.
09:29Delving into the politics, delving into all the stuff like pre-Luke Skywalker was really cool.
09:38I'll explain it to you later, Joe.
09:39Yeah, I am going to need an explainer.
09:41It's a Star Wars show without lightsabers.
09:43Okay.
09:43Yeah.
09:44It doesn't sound like it'd be good, but it's amazing.
09:46Yeah, that was –
09:46That's the greatest pitch.
09:47No, that was the one thing when I started the show.
09:51I read online, yeah, there's no lightsabers here.
09:54And I was like, oh, that's kind of a bummer.
09:56But after like three, four episodes, I was completely locked in.
09:59Fantastic.
10:00Brad Foe, because he's a gossip.
10:01You're a severance guy?
10:02Yes.
10:03Okay.
10:03That is one that I watch.
10:05He got me into that show.
10:06That is a pretty good watch as well.
10:08Well, Lucas Giolito, we appreciate the time.
10:11Jumping on, thank you so much for doing so, and best of luck.
10:14Yeah, appreciate it, guys.
10:15Thank you, sir.
10:15We got Red Sox and Orioles game two here tonight.
