00:00Shahid Mehboob born on 25 August 1962, he was a spirited Pakistani cricketer who carried
00:06both the ball and the bat with equal enthusiasm.
00:10A lively medium passer and hard-hitting low-order bestman, he announced himself on the international
00:15stage during the 1983 World Cup.
00:18In this video, we revisit a memorable moment from the Ruthmans Asia Cup played at Sharjah
00:24on April 6, 1984.
00:26It was the opening match against Sri Lanka where Shahid Mehboob showcased his grit and
00:30flair with the bat.
00:31In the opening match against Sri Lanka, he displayed some batting skills.
00:35His presence at the crease brought a spark, reminding fans of Pakistan fighting spirit
00:39on the big stage.
00:40Let's watch his batting.
00:42The second spell has been surprising, it goes extremely well and it's back two wickets,
00:57which I think has done a lot, possibly lately.
01:00Let's pull it across.
01:01There's trouble there and he may be out, he's out, and that's the south of Pakistan.
01:14Perfectly good batting wicket, there's Sharjah.
01:16I think the game is at a very, very interesting stage because Pakistan is a tremendous fightless.
01:22players play it again towards the fine leg region, click the wrist, jar john's throw coming
01:43in.
01:45Now in every run now, right to both sides, trying to hit the ball, once it's too hard,
02:03they're not going for the quick single, they're strapping it going for the single.
02:07Green's defeated once again, in the covers.
02:17This point of the game is tap and run, it's the first time you've asked me to do it.
02:25As of you, we have dark feet.
02:29We've got no way this time out to deep square.
02:37We've got the Nike running round.
02:41Good return, two to side.
02:43175 for the loss of eight quickers.
02:47How do you see it?
02:5718,000, 50 feet after the Anais professional.
02:5915,000 coming to breastplate,
03:02average nipples or three points for one another.
03:08I said no, this is actually a compromise,
03:11I'll bring you the advice,
03:12Then I called,
03:13we ordered the third sub too.
03:16We're running between the wickets there, 1.77 now, for the last 8 wickets, the average 2.93
03:46And it is, beautiful shot by Coyote there, middle of the back, roll of the wrist, 4 runs
04:08And we go through for a quick single, and we're going back for the second, there might be a run out of it to direct it
04:18And almost an overtrow there, must be the light of the crowd
04:26So it's 1.84 now, it's up in the air
04:46And drama here in the last moments, in the last over, plenty of action
04:52A single to Pakistan, 1.85
04:56Let's watch the replay here
05:06Shahid playing it a little awkwardly
05:08A lunge there by...
05:10Trapa Nike and it's passing
05:14Shahid now facing
05:16He's gotten away past the square leg umpire
05:20Mendes out of it
05:22They should be up to
05:241.87 for the loss of 9 wickets now
05:28And umpire Stuart Christian looks at the wickets
05:32At his watch
05:34Hips out today
05:36So at the end of the 46th over
05:42Pakistan
05:441.87 for the loss of 9 wickets
05:48So Cricket fans, what do you think how his technique was?
05:52Remember, he made a marvelous 77 runs
05:54A then-world record in a match-saving partnership of 144 runs with Imran Khan against Sri Lanka during 1983 World Cup
06:02He played his only test match against India in 1989, when on an unsporting pitch for ballers could not prove his skills
06:10Yet his brief flashes of brilliance, especially that valiant innings in Sharjah, remain satched in Pakistan cricketing folklore
