00:00I was in my second year of high school.
00:13Every year, our school was required to perform at least two lockdown drills.
00:17But our principal at the time would always have us do more like three or four, so I was pretty used to it.
00:22All the teachers would always warn us ahead of time to save any panic.
00:25That morning, as I walked into my first period of class, I was informed by my history teacher that the school would be having a lockdown drill that day.
00:34I actually kind of liked them, because it meant we'd have less work to do considering the 20 or 25 minutes they always take.
00:4130 minutes into class, and a short buzzer went off, followed by our principal's voice on the intercom.
00:47Like every other drill, he explained how the school was going into lockdown, but that it was just a practice drill.
00:52He explained that should there ever be a real lockdown, the buzzer would sound for longer, and there would be no intercom announcement.
00:59Our teacher instructed all of us to shut the curtains and go into the corner of the classroom that was not visible from the outside door.
01:05He then shut off the lights and locked the door.
01:08For the next few minutes, we sat in silence.
01:12Eventually, we heard footsteps outside.
01:14It was the principal trying every classroom door to make sure they were locked, and that the classes were responding to the lockdown correctly.
01:20Before I knew it, the drill was over.
01:24The day progressed, and I was now sitting in my physics class, which was right after lunch.
01:29At some point, I ducked out of the class to use the bathroom.
01:32Now, our school building had a basement.
01:35Down there, they had a bathroom that was much more private and a lot less busy, so I would always try to use that one.
01:41There were a couple classrooms down there, so it didn't look weird for me to go down there.
01:45I was sitting in one of the back stalls.
01:49I was the only one in there, which was usually the case.
01:52All of a sudden, I heard the lockdown buzzer start going off from outside in the hall.
01:59It sounded for about a full minute before it abruptly stopped.
02:02I waited for the principal's voice to come over the speakers, but it never did, which, like I mentioned earlier, was supposed to signify a real lockdown.
02:12At first, I didn't really think it was a real lockdown, though.
02:15It happened too close to the practice lockdown earlier that morning.
02:19I thought it was just a second part to the drill.
02:21But, as I sat there for a few more minutes, I started to realize that, if that were the case, that probably would have been explained over the intercom.
02:30I started to panic, now thinking this was real.
02:33I wasn't safe in the bathroom.
02:35The door had no lock, so I ran outside to try and find a classroom.
02:39There wasn't much for options in that basement.
02:42It was also hard to see now that they turned the hall lights off.
02:45But, I did eventually find a classroom door.
02:48I tried the handle.
02:49It was locked.
02:51I looked in through the glass part of the door.
02:54In one of the corners, I could barely make out a kid hiding.
02:57There was a class inside.
02:59I banged on the door, explaining that I was a student and trying to hide.
03:03I got no response.
03:05I was both terrified and frustrated at the same time.
03:09I realized protocol was to never let anyone inside, no matter what.
03:13I was on my own.
03:15I thought about going back to the bathroom, but found an empty computer lab first and settled on that.
03:20I got under one of the back desks, and for the second time that day, sat in silence.
03:25Only this time, for a real lockdown.
03:29Ten minutes went by.
03:31Nothing.
03:32Not even an update over the intercom.
03:33Then, the hard-dropping sound of running footsteps from outside coming down the basement stairs.
03:39I could hear the person's heavy breathing.
03:44It kept getting closer.
03:47It now sounded like it was just outside the room.
03:50I started adjusting my body position to try and duck down more to get further out of view.
03:54When a light turned on.
03:57It was the light to the computer on the desk above me, waking up.
04:01I must have accidentally pulled the mouse cord.
04:03It wasn't that bright, but it was enough for me to make out a silhouette in the doorway to the room.
04:09I genuinely feared for my life in that moment.
04:12The person was just standing there.
04:14I prayed they wouldn't enter the room.
04:17And after what felt like an eternity, they turned and continued running down the hallway.
04:23A few minutes later, and the lockdown was over.
04:27The school tried to keep the incident silent, but it eventually got out.
04:32Apparently, a kid in my grade, that I actually slightly knew, stole his dad's gun
04:36and got in the school through a back door he'd left propped open earlier in the day.
04:40Police showed up to the school and detained him before any bullets were shot.
04:45They later searched his backpack and found a paper with a list of names on it,
04:49which they believe was who he meant to kill that day.
04:52Pictures of the list itself leaked.
04:55My name was number four on that list.
04:58I never heard if the kid just got scared and decided not to do anything,
05:02or if he just genuinely didn't find anybody after entering the building.
05:05Either way, I believe the person that I saw while hiding in the computer lab was him,
05:11and that I could have lost my life in that moment.
05:19Back in October of 2016, for whatever reason,
05:22these killer clown sightings kept getting reported around America.
05:26Real or fake, videos of them would almost always get posted somewhere online.
05:30For that whole month, it was all over the news.
05:34I remember in our town specifically, it kind of got out of hand.
05:37People in the area were committing real crimes wearing clown masks,
05:41or sometimes full-body clown outfits.
05:43It was honestly terrifying.
05:46Anyway, back when this was happening, I was in high school.
05:50Throughout that whole month, many of the staff and student school emails received threats.
05:54They were always from a different, random email address,
05:58so there was no real way of blocking them.
06:01It was always something like,
06:02killerclown at cvx dot zy,
06:06or something random.
06:08It usually had something to the effect of killer clown followed by some random characters.
06:13It got so bad that the school had to send out a mass email to all students and parents
06:18saying they were aware of the threats and were taking them seriously.
06:20I remember some days, the teachers were instructed to teach with their classroom doors locked.
06:26We weren't even allowed to leave to go to the bathroom.
06:30Needless to say, a lot of us were on edge.
06:32I have no shame in saying it was really scary.
06:35I saw some of the things the emails were saying.
06:38A lot of it was really graphic and truly disturbing.
06:42Of course, at the time, none of us knew if anyone was really planning to act on these threats,
06:46or if it was just someone somewhere behind a computer screen playing a sick joke.
06:51But, honestly, it felt like only a matter of time before something would go down.
06:56And finally, one day something would.
06:59I was in my trigonometry class, when the school's lockdown alarm went off.
07:03Our principal's voice then came over the loudspeaker.
07:10His voice was shaky.
07:12Now, our principal was a pretty intimidating dude, so hearing fear in his voice only furthered
07:17my own fear.
07:18I knew this lockdown had to be related to the threat.
07:22In that classroom, there wasn't really a good corner for all of us to hide in.
07:26You could see a good portion of the room from outside the door.
07:29So, our teacher ordered us to barricade the door with all the desks and chairs in the room.
07:32We then sat as far away from the door as we could, although even this provided a clear
07:38view of the glass window on the door.
07:40I watched as all the lights abruptly turned off in the hallway, shortly followed by the
07:45lights in the classroom.
07:46The familiar hum of the heating system faded.
07:50The school had cut the power.
07:53It was eerie.
07:55The whole building was quiet, and there wasn't the usual whispering or joking around from other
07:59students like there was during practice drills for this kind of thing.
08:03Even our teacher had a look of fear on his face, putting me more on edge.
08:08We sat there for multiple minutes.
08:11We then heard a metal banging sound, like someone was hitting the lockers down the hall.
08:16A voice started yelling.
08:23One of the girls sitting next to me quietly began crying.
08:27The noises continued off and on for the next few minutes.
08:30As time passed, the noises kept getting louder, as whoever was making them seemingly kept getting
08:36closer.
08:37At this point, my classmates and I were staring at each other, all of us gauging each other's
08:41reactions.
08:42Then, the sound of the classroom's door handle rattling.
08:48I looked up.
08:50Through the glass on the door, I saw a clown mask looking in.
08:54The person stood there for a while, not doing anything.
08:57Then, they abruptly ducked down out of view, and the sound of the door handle rattling continued.
09:01They were trying to pick the lock.
09:05We all sat there, listening to this happen, when the lock disengaged.
09:10Immediately, the full-body force of this person smashed into the door.
09:14The desks barricading the door slightly shifted back.
09:17This happened a few more times, but not much progress was made.
09:21They eventually gave up, and we could hear their footsteps running away down the hall.
09:27When police arrived, they cleared the building and escorted all of us out.
09:32No one was ever found responsible for the lockdown.
09:35It's believed that at least three people dressed in clown costumes entered the back entrance of
09:39the school that day, intent on making true to the threat sent over email.
09:44At the time, the school did have some cameras, but during the lockdown, they cut the power,
09:49so they never caught anything.
09:52School was canceled for the next few days.
09:54When we came back, the school had installed a new auto-locking feature on the doors and windows.
10:05This happened in 2013.
10:07I had graduated college the year prior with a degree in education.
10:12I wanted to be a teacher, and was able to land a job at a nearby high school.
10:16The first few weeks, I was shadowing another teacher, as they called it.
10:20It was meant to help me prepare to teach my own class, but it really just felt like a glorified
10:24TA position.
10:26I would sit in the class with the other students and help the teacher when needed.
10:30It was a chemistry class, and on one of the lab days, we required those flasks used for
10:35chemical reactions, measuring solutions, and stuff like that.
10:39All of that type of stuff was kept in a supply closet on the other side of the building.
10:44I made my way out of the class and started heading over there.
10:48After two minutes, I was there and began looking for the flasks.
10:52All of a sudden, my phone went off.
10:53It was an automatic text message from the school.
10:58Being a part of the staff, we were required to sign up to receive these automated messages.
11:03The text explained how the school was going into lockdown, and that it was not a drill.
11:08By the time I would have made it back to my class, the door would have likely already been
11:12locked, so I opted to hide in the closet by myself.
11:15I turned off the light and closed the door.
11:18There wasn't much room to sit down.
11:20I had to just stand there in the dark.
11:23After a few seconds, the lockdown alarm sounded from the speakers throughout the building.
11:29The usual ambience from inside nearby classrooms immediately died down.
11:34It was now completely quiet.
11:37Breaking the silence was the sound of my phone going off again.
11:41It was an update.
11:42It read,
11:44Please remain in lockdown.
11:46A suspected armed intruder has entered the building.
11:48Police have been notified.
11:51I could feel my heart picking up speed.
11:53I didn't feel safe where I was.
11:56Suddenly, I heard running footsteps in the hall.
12:01They ran right up to the closet door and stopped.
12:04The doorknob turned and the door opened.
12:07It all happened before I even had time to react.
12:09Standing outside was an older man, in maybe his 50s.
12:14He was wearing a regular t-shirt with jeans.
12:17I'd never seen the man before.
12:20He asked if he could hide in here with me, and feeling bad for the guy, I said yes.
12:25There wasn't much room at all, but we both still fit.
12:27The man explained how he had been teaching a class down the hall, when he heard the lockdown alarm.
12:34In my mind, this raised a red flag.
12:36Why then was he here instead of with his class?
12:39I asked him this.
12:42He didn't immediately respond.
12:43Interrupting the silence was again the sound of my phone.
12:48It was another update from the school.
12:51The text said to not open our classroom doors for any reason, and that the suspect was believed to be an older man with a beard.
12:57I frantically re-read the words on my screen.
13:00I didn't get the best look at this guy, but from what I did see, he fit that description.
13:05I could now distinctly hear my heart beating out of my chest.
13:09I made a split-second decision.
13:10I opened up the closet door and ran.
13:13I went straight to the nearest exit, and out to my car in the parking lot.
13:17When I got there, I looked back behind me.
13:20I didn't see anything.
13:22I don't think the man followed me, or at least he didn't follow me outside.
13:26From there, I got in my car and left.
13:30I'd say around 25 minutes later, I received a final update text explaining that the police had cleared the building and the lockdown was over.
13:38I later learned a man had gotten inside by convincing the front desk that he was there to pick up his kid,
13:43but that a lockdown was called when they saw a gun holster around his waist as he was walking down the hall.
13:49Several teachers reported their classroom doors being forcefully struck during the lockdown from someone trying to open them.
13:55The man was gone when police arrived, and they were never able to identify him.
14:01He was caught on the school's security cameras, but they never showed a full view of his face.
14:06However, they did show that he was indeed armed.
14:08I saw the videos myself, and I'm almost sure it was the same man hiding with me.
14:14But it was also dark in that closet, so I can't be certain.
14:17And I saw the Mendel, in that closet ST.
14:18It was all of my laughs.
14:19I think it was the most likely to be something the port of beautiful people's face.
14:19Whenever it comes along, there was a little bit of turn on about this space and the claw still sets it under the bloody structure of thetle it's pending.
