Mumbai continued to reel under heavy rains on Monday, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for the city and a red alert for several coastal districts of Maharashtra. Waterlogging was reported in multiple areas, including Gandhi Market in Sion, while massive traffic jams choked the Western Expressway near Vile Parle. 00:00Heavy rains bring Mumbai City to a standstill.
00:02Orange alert in Mumbai. Red alert in Thane.
00:05Sweets are waterlogged.
00:06Mumbai cops issue an advisory over heavy rains.
00:10My department says the rains will continue.
00:11Schools are shut across Mumbai.
00:13Thane, maximum waterlogging in maximum city.
00:22I'll be getting in these pictures coming in from Mumbai City in several parts
00:26where there is heavy waterlogging that is being reported.
00:28Traffic snarls as well after rains, in fact, lashed the city.
00:35Mumbai is waterlogged in many places and so is the suburban of Thane.
00:44Vidya is getting in more details.
00:46In fact, I'll go across to Vidya in a moment from now.
00:48But take a look at this report that she sent in earlier.
00:53Heavy rainfall is being reported in Mumbai City since Monday morning.
00:57A red alert has been issued by the IMD.
01:01This is the low-lying area of Andheri subway where you can see some waterlogging
01:05and hence the traffic has been shut.
01:07But other areas like subways of Milan subway don't have waterlogging as of now.
01:12But Andheri suburbs seems to have reported a lot of waterlogging
01:15because a lot of heavy rainfall has been received.
01:17So in Lokhanwala area of Andheri or Veera Desai road, there is waterlogging which is being reported.
01:23Also, there is heavy traffic.
01:25One of the reasons also is that our people are coming to work after a long weekend
01:28and heavy rainfall has led to traffic in some areas.
01:31But if rain continues like this, it can cause inconvenience in roads and air travel.
01:36Vidya Mbassan, Saipur Satpatul Mustafa Sheikh for India today.
01:39We are right now in the Sian area of Mumbai and here because of this small low-lying area
01:46that happens right on the Eastern Express Highway, there is severe waterlogging
01:51which has led to not just this police station getting inundated but also the entire traffic.
01:57Now because of this entire bumper-to-bumper traffic that you can see right behind me
02:01and even on the other side because of this one particular spot on the Eastern Express Highway
02:07where the traffic is congested because of the entire waterlogging that has taken place.
02:13The traffic police are trying to do their bus best but you can see the school-going kids
02:20who should technically have been given a day off, it should have been called a rainy day
02:25but because the IMD in the morning had kept saying that it was going to be an orange alert
02:29which is basically that people should really just take a little bit of precaution
02:33but later they changed it with the weather not turning for the worse, they changed it to a red alert
02:41wherein they are asking people to be very cautious and there is a red alert right now
02:46for the next few hours in Mumbai.
02:49So such low-lying areas, especially with the kind of rain that is taking place right now
02:53will be certainly inundated for a while.
02:59With Cameron Mahesh more in Mumbai, Vidya for India Today.
03:03All right, I'm going to go straight across to Vidya for more details on that story.
03:07Mustafa also continues to be with us.
03:09First to you, Mustafa, where you are, it's clear that there is fair amount of waterlogging.
03:14Pictures behind you just speak volumes of the kind of distress that is now being caused to the people in that area.
03:20Commuters facing difficulties as well, knee-deep water levels.
03:24Tell us, where exactly are you? What's going on?
03:27We are on Veera Desai Road, Andheri West and here there is a knee-deep waterlogging which has taken place.
03:36We have cars here which are shutting down, blocking the road.
03:39And this patch you can see that has a lot of waterlogging and this water is not only on the roads
03:44but it has entered the shop and also across, if you see the housing society there,
03:49there is waterlogging in the society.
03:51You can see this Eversine Park, there is waterlogging in there also.
03:54So, currently since the morning Mumbai is facing rainfall, there has been a red alert issued
04:00while most of the parts remain functional.
04:04But slowly as the intensity of the rains is increasing, the density of the rains is increasing,
04:09there are inconveniences being caused.
04:11And you will see from here where we are sending knee-deep water at Veera Desai Road in Mumbai,
04:15and very west entering the shop, shutting down the road.
04:19And this situation is getting a little out of hand because of the heavy rainfall.
04:24Now the red alert has been issued by the BMC to take all the necessary precautions.
04:29But at the same time, because it's a Monday after a long weekend, people were out for work.
04:33They were not, the alert was of an orange alert kind of work.
04:36So, people are inconvenienced while either they are going back to work or coming from it, back from it, back to you.
04:42Absolutely.
04:42You know, cars are getting stranded right there is what Mustafa is telling us.
04:47But what does it look like?
04:48You know, weren't they prepared again this time around?
04:51And it's the same story year after year, Mustafa, as we've seen with the Met Department,
04:56saying that there would be further rainfall.
04:58But take a look at the pictures coming in.
05:00It speaks volumes of the kind of preparation, really, that the BMC and the authorities have made, isn't it?
05:06And also, Mustafa, I think that's a mug that's right behind you, right next to you.
05:11Of course, it's a Mercedes car which is stranded on the road.
05:16And as you were saying, because it's been raining in Mumbai heavily for the last two to three days,
05:22so for a lot of time, you can say that the situation was under control.
05:29The water was being, you know, drained out.
05:32But in some areas, low-lying areas, the water drainage seems to be a problem.
05:38And that seems to be now a situation where you can see this car which is coming up.
05:42So this vehicle, the water logging is, you know, intense.
05:48And because the attempts being made by vehicles to cross the road,
05:53that leads to some of the vehicles getting stranded, which we are getting to see on this road also.
05:58So clearly, it's been raining heavily, but the BMC says that they are doing their best.
06:03But at this point, you can say that the water is there.
06:07So this auto rickshaw, which is now shut down here at the road, you can imagine.
06:11There are passengers also.
06:13But at this point, the auto rickshaw has been shut down on this road.
06:20And maybe the height of the water logging, which is there on this entire road on Viradeh side,
06:25near the country club in Andheri West.
06:27So clearly, many other areas.
06:29Now, these were not only a low-lying area, but maybe the rain clearance problem or something else.
06:35Metro works in Mumbai, which are leading to, you know, creating new flooding spots in Mumbai.
06:41So clearly, BMC said that they have done their bit.
06:44We saw drainage pumps across the road outside.
06:47But it really doesn't seem that it's working as of now,
06:49because the rain continues to last in Mumbai.
06:52And it's leading to inconvenience to people.
06:56There are some people who are walking through this needed water.
06:59There are auto rickshaws vehicles passing by this road.
07:02As the day progresses, it's likely that once the rain expels in India,
07:06there is more inconvenience will be caught.
07:09Yes, Mustafa, absolutely.
07:10And Andi's rain is a great leveler in that sense.
07:13And auto rickshaw is stuck right behind you, Mustafa.
07:15With stunning pictures coming in.
07:17And so is Mercedes.
07:18And both not being able to move, really struggling in the knee-deep waters at this point in time.
07:25Speaks volumes of the situation there.
07:27I'm also going to be going across Ritvik Balikar, joining us from Marine Drive.
07:30Vidya also continues to be with us.
07:33Vidya, where exactly are you?
07:35In fact, a few moments ago, you were telling us about the fact that rains,
07:39in fact, a red alert, rather, has been issued, at least for some areas.
07:42What's the med department saying?
07:43What's more?
07:44Well, there is a red alert for Mumbai and the Raigud area,
07:49Navi, Mumbai, Thane, all these areas included.
07:52In fact, right now, I'm at Sion.
07:54And because of the heavy downforce that we have been witnessing in the last couple of hours,
07:59there have been exterior inundation in this area.
08:01If you can look at it, we can just show you the generators,
08:04the pumps that have been put up, you know, right there.
08:06You know, these pumps have been put up in the last many years.
08:11These pumps have been functioning.
08:13In spite of the generators and the pumps being put in place to, you know,
08:19churn out the water from this particular area,
08:21because this is an important junction.
08:22This is the Eastern Express Highway,
08:24wherein you have people coming from Mumbai,
08:26Navi, Mumbai area, coming towards South Mumbai for their work.
08:30You know, this important road gets chock-blocked because of this one particular point
08:35wherein the severe inundation really takes place.
08:39And that's one of the reasons why you can see,
08:41you know, as long as, as far as you can see,
08:43there is a huge traffic jam.
08:45And to make sure that, you know,
08:47this area gets cleared of this water inundation,
08:51there are current pumps,
08:52but it certainly seems to be of no use.
08:54There's a heavy downforce that the city is witnessing
08:56and the water from surrounding areas coming into this particular portion of science,
09:01hiding, where you can really see, you know,
09:04big cars being pushed by good Samaritans
09:07to make sure that they, you know,
09:09they are out of the way of people still wanting to go ahead.
09:12The people here, the traffic, especially,
09:15have been trying to do their best,
09:16but certainly, in spite of the best efforts being put in,
09:20the heavy wind is taking its toes.
09:22And certainly, at this point,
09:23there are people, for the last many hours,
09:26I've been seeing as to how they have been unable to move
09:30from that serpentine, you know, queue that you can see.
09:33That's right.
09:34I'll just come back to you in a moment from now,
09:36where the skews are being seen,
09:37the waterlogged roads causing traffic snarls.
09:40I'll be going across to Hrithik as well for more on that story.
09:44Hrithik, I understand that you are from Dadar at this point in time.
09:47Tell us what's going on right behind you.
09:49As I can see, you are also standing in the waterlogged roads, essentially, isn't it?
09:59Yes, absolutely.
10:00Right now, I am at Dadar Chhopati,
10:03just along the seaside, the Arabian Sea,
10:06where you can see not just heavy rain lashing Mumbai since yesterday night,
10:11but you can also see the gusty winds which are combined with this heavy rains
10:17which is causing more suffering to the Mumbaikers.
10:20And I wish to tell you that at 1.50 p.m. now,
10:25the high tide will be there and it will, again,
10:29as per the BMC officials and administrations have told us,
10:34that it will double the sufferings of the Mumbaikers
10:38because we need to understand that Mumbai's low-lying areas
10:42get submerged into water when there's specifically a high tide
10:47because the water of the city which is gashed out in the sea
10:51cannot be done so when there's a high tide
10:54and it is pushed back into the city.
10:55So, a few hours from now will be a bigger challenge
11:00for the BMC administration and the Maharashtra government
11:04because dealing with not just the low-lying areas
11:09where we can see waterlogging,
11:12but also heavy traffic is being witnessed on the streets of the road.
11:17Maharashtra government has declared holidays for the schools
11:21as well as all the government and civic government officials
11:26workers have also been told that they do not need to come to office
11:31and they can go home after half-day
11:35because of this, you know, heavy rains.
11:38All right, I'm going to leave it at that for the moment.
11:40Vidhik Balikar getting in those details.
11:42Mustafa Sheikh and Vidya also getting us those ground reports.
11:46Well, I'll go to my next slide.
12:04I'm good.
12:04I've had a good luck when I remember.
12:05I'm Brad.
12:06I'll walk out in the garden.
12:11I'll walk out in the garden.
12:12I'll walk out by the garden.
