The story centers on a 15th-century prince who, after the death of his beloved wife, renounces God and transforms into the immortal vampire Dracula. 00:00Welcome to Cinescope Official Movie Breakdowns. This is where truth meets cinema.
00:08That's right, and today we're doing a deep dive into a pretty big one,
00:12Luc Besson's Dracula, A Love Tale.
00:15Our goal here is, well, basically to cut through the noise and give you the key info you need.
00:20And just so you know, if you're watching along, all the visuals, all the clips you see,
00:24they're actual scenes from the film, brought to you by Cinescope.
00:28Okay, so let's get into it.
00:30The movie, officially, Dracula, A Love Tale, it's a 2025 release.
00:36Yep, and written and directed by Luc Besson.
00:38You know, the guy behind Leon, the professional, the fifth element.
00:41Quite a distinct style he has.
00:43Definitely. It's interesting to see him back doing both writing and directing here,
00:47and the casting for Dracula, Caleb Landry Jones.
00:49Ah, yes. Besson apparently said Jones' unique talent was the whole reason he even started the project.
00:55That's a big statement.
00:57What is it about Jones, do you think, that made him write for this kind of Dracula?
01:01You know, the love tale part?
01:02Well, he has this incredible ability, doesn't he, to show real intensity, but also vulnerability?
01:09Besson didn't just want a monster.
01:13He wanted someone who could portray that deep, tragic grief.
01:17And that fits perfectly with where this story goes, it's kind of the core idea.
01:21Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
01:22And he's got some serious talent alongside him.
01:24Christoph Waltz is in it.
01:25Right, playing a vampire hunting priest.
01:27He's basically the Van Helsing figure here, providing that kind of moral, religious opposition.
01:33And then there's Zoe Blue Seidel, who's actually playing two roles.
01:36Exactly.
01:37She's Dracula's wife, Elizabetta, back in the 15th century, and her sort of look-alike Mina in the 19th century.
01:43Really crucial for the emotional story.
01:45Double duty.
01:46Yeah.
01:47And Matilda DeAngelis is in there as Maria Ewan Zabid playing Jonathan Harker.
01:50Mm-hmm.
01:51Quite a few others rounding it out.
01:52Mm-hmm.
01:53A solid supporting cast.
01:54And behind the camera, we've got Danny Elfman doing the music.
01:57You can almost hear that gothic sound already.
01:59Oh, definitely.
02:00Colin Wandersman's on cinematography, Lucas Cub, Fabiani editing.
02:03The whole thing runs about, what, 129 minutes?
02:06Around that, yeah.
02:07Two hours and change.
02:08And they started filming back in late March 2024.
02:12Went to Finland for it.
02:14Finland?
02:15Why there?
02:16The snow, apparently.
02:17That kind of region has these amazing, stark, snowy landscapes, perfect for that gothic,
02:23slightly isolated feel, you know?
02:25Right.
02:26Adds to the mood.
02:27And it's already out in France.
02:28Yeah.
02:29Released July 30th, 2025.
02:31Other places, like Germany, are getting it later, maybe late October.
02:34International rollout is happening.
02:36Okay, so let's talk about the story itself.
02:38It sounds like Besson's really putting his own spin on the Dracula myth.
02:41Oh, absolutely.
02:42It's very much framed as this, well, tragic romance.
02:45It actually starts in two different time periods.
02:48Right.
02:49There's the past and the present.
02:50Yeah.
02:51The 19th century present.
02:52Exactly.
02:53It kicks off in the 15th century.
02:54We see Prince Vladimir and his wife Elisabetta dies tragically.
02:57And this just breaks him, right?
02:58Completely.
02:59He's consumed by grief, feels abandoned by God, and basically renounces his faith entirely.
03:05It's a huge moment.
03:06And that's the turning point.
03:07That's how he becomes Dracula.
03:08Yeah.
03:09That's the origin story here.
03:10His grief and rejection of God lead to his transformation into this immortal vampire.
03:15Okay, so flash forward a few centuries.
03:17Yep.
03:18To the 19th century.
03:19London, maybe Paris.
03:20And Dracula encounters Mina.
03:22Who looks just like Elisabetta.
03:24The Zoe Blusadel character.
03:26Exactly.
03:27And it's not just a passing resemblance.
03:29He becomes utterly obsessed.
03:31This deep eternal love for yearning drives him to pursue her relentlessly.
03:37So it's less about bloodlust, initially anyway, and more about this lost love.
03:41That seems to be the focus.
03:42Yeah.
03:43His pursuit of Mina, across, you know, whatever dangerous places, is the main storyline.
03:48It frames his vampirism as this terrible curse born from love and loss.
03:52A tragic figure, then.
03:53Not just a monster.
03:54Kind of.
03:55I mean, he's still Dracula, but the motivation is reframed.
03:58It's positioned as this grand, gothic romance, albeit a very dark one.
04:02His curse is tragic.
04:04And that's where Waltz's priest comes in, I guess.
04:06Yeah.
04:07To represent the other side.
04:08Precisely.
04:09He's the counterforce.
04:10The moral authority.
04:11The vampire hunter.
04:12Adding that religious tension against Dracula's, well, obsessive and maybe even blasphemous love.
04:16So the film traces his journey from grieving husband to immortal stalker, essentially.
04:23You could put it that way, yeah.
04:24From grieving prince to eternal tragic lover.
04:28The whole story builds towards this big confrontation.
04:31Between his obsession and, like, human resistance.
04:34Exactly.
04:35Love versus mortality.
04:36Faith versus this cursed immortality.
04:39It's definitely a different take than just straight horror.
04:42More sympathetic, maybe, but still aiming for that terrifying edge, I think.
04:46It's a bold move.
04:47Reinterpreting such an iconic character through romance.
04:50Makes you wonder how it lands.
04:51Yeah, it poses that question, doesn't it?
04:53How do you fight a monster whose driving force is this kind of epic, tragic love?
04:58It makes it more complex than just pure evil.
05:00It really does give it a different feel.
05:02His immortality isn't just power.
05:03It's tied to his endless grief and this impossible pursuit.
05:07That seems to be the core idea Besson is exploring.
05:10His damnation and his reason for existing are sort of tied together in Mina.
05:14Fascinating stuff.
05:15Well, if you found this breakdown interesting, there's plenty more where that came from at Cinescope.
