00:00Let's go.
00:30I do remember being in Vegas with him.
00:36It was on the party was starting right away.
00:40Big city love, bring on the sugar.
00:44That's whores and sluts.
00:45That's not a record.
00:48One thing about Dennis, he had to escape.
00:55He'd like to go out.
00:57He'd like to go to clubs.
00:59We'd go to his favorite restaurant, then we'd go to a nightclub, then we'd go to after
01:04hours.
01:05It didn't stop.
01:09It was definitely an occupational hazard to be Dennis' girlfriend.
01:16He was wild.
01:17It's time of coffee time.
01:22It's time to blow your mind.
01:25It's time of coffee time.
01:27It's time.
01:28Suck it down, brother.
01:32But to be honest, I didn't realize what the team's schedule was.
01:35I didn't know he took a detour.
01:45He didn't come back on time.
01:48Way to go get his ass out of bed.
01:50And I'm not going to say what's in his bed and where he was and blah, blah, blah.
01:55There's a knock on the door.
01:57It's Michael Jordan.
01:59And I hid.
02:01I didn't want him to see me like that.
02:04So I'm just hiding behind the couch with covers over me.
02:08Come on.
02:09We've got to get to practice.
02:11Dennis came back and joined the team.
02:14And that's the way it went that year.
02:21Did you get your body through anything today, Dennis?
02:23You've got to put your body through things so the muscles of them ever take you, too.
02:27Not just a month.
02:29You're a body baby.
02:30You're a little big girl.
02:31You got to pay you.
02:34Michael and Scott accepted me for who I am.
02:37They said, you know what?
02:39He does what he does, but he cares a lot.
02:43I go party hard.
02:44I work hard.
02:45I think that we get along so well because we want to win.
02:49We want to win the championship.
02:55Come across.
02:59First of all, there's no backstabbing going on.
03:10It's time for me to move on.
03:12This will be Phil's last year as the coach of the Bulls.
03:16Are the expectations way too high?
03:18Where do we go from here?
03:19The only question, how long can it last?
03:29We'll see you in the middle.
03:34We'll go play again.
03:44Oh God!
03:51After his vacation, Dennis comes back to practice.
04:09Phil, now, his whole motive is to get Dennis back in shape.
04:13So we start this drill called the Indian drill.
04:17Everybody starts running in a line.
04:19And Phil blows a whistle.
04:22Whoever's at the back, run to the front.
04:24Now, you can't stop.
04:26Whoever's in front controls the pace.
04:28So I'm saying, well, fuck, this is kind of messed up
04:31because now I'm getting caught up in Dennis getting in shape drill.
04:35When in essence, I haven't taken a vacation.
04:37So I tell everybody in that group, say, look,
04:39whoever gets in the front of that row, slow down to a fucking walk.
04:43We're just going to jog and jog and jog and jog.
04:45So Steve Kerr and Judd Boosley, they all get to the line.
04:52We just slowly, we just running, slowly just running,
04:55slowly just running, and then Dennis takes off.
04:58Boom.
04:58Now, he blows a whistle.
04:59Now, we cannot stop until we get back in front of Dennis.
05:03It took us four laps to catch up to Dennis.
05:06It was like in his psyche.
05:08He needed to get away.
05:09But in all honesty, Dennis was always there.
05:11He was always on point.
05:18Phil realized that I was different, man.
05:22Phil knew me so well because he knew that I needed to do it, right,
05:25because so much shit I was doing, but I had to get my head right.
05:29But that's what's so cool about playing with that team, man.
05:32They was all about anybody need to do something.
05:35They was all about it.
05:36And Phil was cool about it.
05:38Dennis is always a rebel.
05:41At some point, you know, he wants to join the group,
05:43but the other part of him wants to be autonomous.
05:46So we appreciate the fact that he's a maverick.
05:50But yet, when it comes time for him to perform,
05:53he's always on the court for us, always playing hard for us.
05:56Dennis and I have this Native American bond between us.
06:04He comes in one day, and Dennis and I met in the team room.
06:09In the team room, I have a bear claw necklace,
06:11turtle shell that came from another Indian reservation,
06:14and various other Indian artifacts.
06:17And so Dennis is like, wow.
06:22He said, I have this necklace from the Ponca Indians in Oklahoma.
06:27I can, I'm hip to that.
06:28And I say, well, Dennis, in their tradition,
06:31and the tradition that I knew,
06:33you would be a hayoka, a backward walking person.
06:36There were people that were different, and you're a hayoka.
06:39So you're this hayoka in this tribe.
06:41He don't look at me as a basketball player.
06:45He look at me as a great friend.
06:48He realized that I probably need him for inspiration.
06:53He wants to see me persevere.
06:57I had never met a coach who was that different and genuine
07:03when it came to bringing the group together.
07:08He had this real interest in Native American history.
07:11And he would weave that into our own culture.
07:16I mean, he brought in Zen Buddhism
07:18and Native American Indian philosophies.
07:21Everything was about being focused, playing as one.
07:33When I was in Great Falls as a kid growing up,
07:36my grandparents had this boarding house
07:38with small little cabins.
07:39And Native American people from the popular Indian reservation
07:44used to come, and they'd have their kids.
07:47And so I started learning more and more
07:49about this Native American culture.
07:53There was a certain negativity about playing with these kids.
07:56I didn't feel that at all.
07:59Cowboys and Indians was a game the kids played.
08:02I was always the Indian.
08:05My dad was a pastor.
08:08My mother was also a minister.
08:11She was an extreme belief about the second coming of Christ.
08:15So that was something that was foremost in your mind in growing up.
08:22Would you be ready if Christ came to be taken
08:24as part of that group that would be raptured?
08:28My goal was always in conflict.
08:32I would rather be playing sports than being on my knees praying.
08:37I played basketball from the time I was a little kid
08:40and eventually went to the University of North Dakota.
08:44Jackson is having a brain on the night.
08:47He scored 28 in the first half and has continued
08:49the on-slide here in the second half.
08:53Then he extracted me in the second round,
08:55and I made the all-rookie team my rookie season.
08:59I remember seeing Phil Jackson,
09:03and he's always smacking guys around.
09:07He was like an earlier version of Dennis Rodman.
09:13I was there 11 years with the Knicks.
09:15He had seven good years.
09:17He went to the finals three years.
09:18White has the ball.
09:19Stalling by Jackson!
09:20He's from the head of the field.
09:22And we won two championships.
09:29I can walk down the street, there's no one there.
09:33Though the pavement's a one huge crowd.
09:35Phil and I wrote Maverick together.
09:38And in that book, Phil talks about taking acid.
09:45And thinking he was a lion,
09:47roaring up and down the beach in L.A.
09:50Phil was like a hippie.
09:52And different from the NBA fraternity.
09:56When I was playing as a pro,
09:59Red Holtzman encouraged me to think about coaching,
10:01and particularly in Puerto Rico,
10:03where I ended up coaching for a while.
10:06I spent a lot of time down there.
10:09In the superior league, it was called.
10:11They played every other day.
10:13And these players would just play ferociously.
10:17There was a local animosity among these small towns.
10:37There were fires when you're way out of town
10:40and rocks being thrown at your car.
10:41And they'd kill a chicken in the graveyard
10:45and pour the blood on the visiting team's bench.
10:50The town I went to, Kever Diaz, was ferocious.
10:53The mayor had actually shot an official one time
10:57with a gun and hit him in the lower leg.
11:00So his punishment was he wasn't allowed to go
11:02to any more home games for the rest of the season.
11:05But really, there's a lot of love about the game,
11:09and I learned a lot of things from the process.
11:13And then I got a call about coaching
11:15over in the CBA for the Albany Patroons.
11:19And now introducing the head coach of the Patroons,
11:22formerly of the New York Knickerbockers,
11:25Phil Jackson.
11:26Phil Jackson.
11:27Then in A4, we won the championship.
11:30They came together as a group,
11:32and it's been a great team effort ever since.
11:34And I think we're ecstatic right now.
11:36After that, the Bulls tracked me down,
11:39and I got up to interview for an assistant job
11:44under Stan Albeck.
11:45Jerry Krause and I had a really good relationship.
11:49I wanted to bring Phil in.
11:51And he came in not dressed real well.
11:55Stan was very conservative,
11:56and Phil looked anything but conservative at that point.
11:58And Stan quickly nixed that idea.
12:02Two years later, we had an opening.
12:03And this time, I called Phil,
12:05and I told him how to dress
12:06and how to talk to Doug.
12:10Doug Collins was our coach,
12:11and I kind of helped Doug think about it,
12:14and we hired Phil.
12:15Under Doug Collins, one of the assistant coaches
12:21was Tex Winter.
12:23Jerry Krause had the idea
12:24that Tex was going to be a mentor.
12:26Doug was going to follow kind of the things
12:28that he would teach as a coach.
12:31When I took this job 11 years ago,
12:33the first person we hired was Tex Winter.
12:35He's a brilliant man,
12:36the finest offensive mind in basketball.
12:39The triangle was formed between
12:42forward two,
12:45guard one, who is now moved to the corner,
12:48and center five, who forms the apex of the triangle.
12:52He had a system called the triangle.
12:54Jerry said,
12:55I've been listening to his basketball philosophy
12:57for years,
12:58and he's got the kind of philosophy
12:59I'd like to see happen with his team.
13:03Doug's philosophy was different.
13:05Doug had had these plays
13:06that always ended up with Michael Jordan
13:08being the recipient of the score.
13:11Tex was always like,
13:12there's a way of playing this game
13:14that's different than that.
13:16Tex Winter
13:16would berate Doug about,
13:19you should institute the triangle.
13:21Doug would not hear of it.
13:23Doug finally had heard it enough
13:24and said, you know,
13:25I'm tired of hearing that,
13:26and then the argument escalated a little bit,
13:28and Tex Winter was banned from the bench.
13:33He wasn't coaching on the floor anymore.
13:35He was sitting in the corner
13:36taking notes about the practice.
13:39Jerry Krause was really unhappy with it.
13:43During that period of time,
13:45Krause made the decision
13:46that I should work together
13:47as the Tex Winter.
13:48Phil was picking the brains
13:50of the best basketball man
13:51I've ever known in my life,
13:53and I was watching it.
13:55And I just thought,
13:56you know what,
13:57this is getting more and more interesting
13:58all the time.
14:00Is there anything that you've missed?
14:03You still got a little bit more room.
14:06I could have gotten another tear
14:07hearing Mike.
14:08Mike, we want you to deny the ball
14:10so they can't throw the ball in
14:11easy to the blocks.
14:13So, big man,
14:14if your man clears,
14:15you must tell Michael
14:16that he's alone out there
14:17so he doesn't get naked
14:17on a backdoor situation.
14:22Midway through my second year,
14:23I sort of felt
14:24that Phil could be the coach.
14:27What gave you that sense?
14:28Just sense.
14:32Don't want to go into the defense?
14:33Just something that's just feeling.
14:35Jerry wanted to talk to me.
14:37So I go in and talk.
14:38He says,
14:38I may have to do something
14:39that's going to rock this franchise.
14:42I said,
14:42I said,
14:42I said,
14:42I'm going to have to fire
14:44Doug Collins.
14:45I said,
14:46it's going to be some fucking balls.
14:47Fire guy just took us
14:49to the Eastern Conference Final.
14:50Now,
14:50if you're getting ready
14:51for work right now,
14:52then you're probably
14:52not Doug Collins.
14:54Chicago Bulls head coach
14:55was fired in the
14:56surprise move yesterday.
14:58Well,
14:58I got the worst kept secret
14:59in town sitting next to me.
15:01You guys,
15:02as usual,
15:03got us on that one.
15:04For the last two years,
15:07Phil Jackson has been
15:08a very integral part
15:09of this organization.
15:10He's now ready
15:11to be a head coach.
15:12Welcome, coach.
15:13Thanks, Jerry.
15:15Have you talked
15:16to Michael Jordan yet?
15:17Yes, I have.
15:18What do you say?
15:20Congratulations.
15:21Let's go win a championship.
15:23Phil took over
15:25and just had
15:26a different approach.
15:28Doug's approach
15:29was more catered
15:31to Michael.
15:32and Phil's approach
15:34was more catered
15:35to the team.
15:37I wasn't a Phil Jackson fan,
15:39you know,
15:39when he first came in,
15:41you know,
15:41because he was coming in
15:43to take the ball
15:43out of my hands.
15:44Doug put the ball
15:45in my hands.
15:48Tech's winner,
15:49his right-hand man,
15:50had sold him on
15:51an offense
15:52that he believed
15:53would get us
15:55out of this
15:56one-on-one
15:57type of basketball.
15:59The triangle offense
16:00is set so that
16:01there's a key pass
16:02that creates motion.
16:05And then there's
16:0633 different types
16:07of options
16:08that come out
16:08of that single pass.
16:10Players can do
16:11spontaneous,
16:14creative things
16:15using their strengths.
16:17You know,
16:18everybody has an opportunity
16:19to touch the ball,
16:20but I didn't want
16:21Bill Cartwright
16:21to have the ball
16:22with five seconds left.
16:23Dumps into Cartwright,
16:24shoots over Rolls.
16:26Nope.
16:27That's not an
16:28equal opportunity offense.
16:29That's fucking bullshit.
16:30Oh my,
16:33Michael Jordan
16:33has 54 points,
16:3560 points for Jordan,
16:3769 points
16:39for Michael Jordan.
16:40There was so many times
16:41the Tex used to yell at me,
16:43saying,
16:43move the ball,
16:44move the ball.
16:45He says,
16:45no I on team,
16:47it's an I on win.
16:49I had a meeting
16:49with Michael
16:50and I told him
16:51what we were going to do.
16:52Obviously,
16:52you've scored
16:5337, 38 points a game
16:55the last couple years.
16:56I don't anticipate
16:58you're going to be
16:58the scoring champion
16:59in the league.
17:01The spotlight's on the ball
17:02and if you're always
17:04the guy that's going
17:04to have the ball,
17:05teams can generate
17:07a defense against that,
17:08which is what's happened
17:09with the Pistons
17:10the last couple years.
17:12He said,
17:12I'm not worried about you,
17:14but we've got to find a way
17:15to make everybody else better.
17:16We've got to create
17:17other threats.
17:17I came in the game
17:20as being a point guard,
17:22but my growth
17:24sort of grew me
17:26into a small forward.
17:28The triangle offense
17:30allowed me to be
17:31more of what I wanted to be.
17:33Scotty Pippen's
17:34turn around.
17:36Scotty kind of developed
17:37that new position
17:38called the point forward.
17:40Instead of, you know,
17:41being in Michael's shadow,
17:43Scotty was starting to blossom
17:44as one of the top players
17:45in the NBA.
17:46Beautiful move,
17:47making his all-star debut
17:49from the Chicago Bulls,
17:50Scotty Pippen.
17:57Michael Jordan is making
17:59an adjustment
17:59to this new philosophy,
18:01which tries to relieve him
18:02of the offensive burden.
18:04He realized that him playing
18:06and just scoring 30 points
18:08wasn't going to win
18:09the last game of the season.
18:11I'm not going to be
18:12the type of person
18:14who's very hungry
18:14to lead the league
18:15in scoring once again,
18:16or to chase individual accolades.
18:19He made a conscious effort
18:20to say no individual
18:22is going to beat a team.
18:24Right now, I'm more or less
18:25geared towards team success.
18:27That's a special thing
18:28to have happen
18:28when the largest icon
18:30that the NBA's ever had
18:31understands that
18:32I don't have to have
18:33the ball in my hands
18:34all the time.
18:36With the triangle offense,
18:38certainly it needed
18:39some little time
18:40to adjust for everyone
18:41to adjust to it
18:42at their own pace.
18:42And it took us
18:45about a year,
18:46a year or so,
18:47as a team to do it.
18:48But by the 1990 playoffs,
18:51we all felt
18:52that we were ready
18:53to beat the Detroit Pistons.
18:55The hurdle that comes up now
18:56is the big one.
18:57And we know that,
18:59you know,
18:59the challenge
19:00of the Detroit Pistons
19:01is immense.
19:02And it's one
19:03that we've been waiting
19:03for all season long.
19:05Chicago was the only team
19:07to beat the Pistons
19:07in the playoffs last year.
19:09And they're a deeper
19:09and more balanced team
19:11this time around.
19:12I felt like we were
19:13in a position to win,
19:15you know,
19:15and we pushed them
19:17to a game seven
19:18in their building.
19:19That's the sky
19:20in my grand game, right?
19:22Yeah.
19:25The defending world champions,
19:28the Detroit Pistons,
19:29extended to a seventh game.
19:31And 21,500
19:34are gathered here
19:35for a very special afternoon.
19:38When I got up that morning
19:40and went down for breakfast,
19:42I had a headache.
19:45I started feeling
19:45like I wanted to throw up.
19:48I went to the arena,
19:51you know,
19:51did my regular routine,
19:53warming up,
19:54and I was just, like, blind.
19:57I couldn't see.
20:00How old time it is, fellas?
20:02How old time it is, man?
20:04You got Scottie, BJ?
20:06Scottie, guys, horse.
20:09Let's go, man.
20:10You know, we got to go.
20:12You don't have anything
20:13I've done.
20:13Let's go.
20:14All out.
20:15All out.
20:16Let's go.
20:17All teams for this guy.
20:18Let's play hard.
20:19Let's go.
20:19Leave it all on the floor.
20:20Let's go.
20:21Let's go.
20:21Let's go.
20:22Let's go.
20:22Let's go.
20:23Let's go.
20:23Let's go.
20:24Come back.
20:28Aim to seven from the palace.
20:34Piston ball.
20:35As the game started,
20:39I couldn't focus.
20:41Everything was blurry.
20:42I was seeing double, blind,
20:43and I just, like,
20:44I couldn't get my eyesight.
20:47Pippen is one of five
20:48to the field.
20:50One of six.
20:51I told him I can't see.
20:57I was taken out of the game.
21:02He said he had a migraine.
21:04I don't, I can't,
21:05I can't argue the point
21:06that he had a migraine.
21:07It was just one of those things
21:08that, you know,
21:09is so unfortunate.
21:11When you can't see,
21:12and you're seeing double,
21:13and you want to vomit,
21:15and you got to play
21:16against Dennis Rodman.
21:16Pippen passes inside.
21:29Lambeer knocks it away.
21:314.10 to go.
21:34Here's Isaiah.
21:36The plays of the ball right now
21:38are plays of desperation.
21:40Guys are trying to do more
21:41than they're capable of doing,
21:42and that includes Michael Jordan.
21:46The lead is 20,
21:51and they, the Detroit Pistons,
21:53will meet the Portland Trailblazers
21:54in the best of seven
21:55beginning Tuesday night
21:57on CBS.
22:06Michael Jordan at 31,
22:08and he's with Matt O'Brien.
22:10Right?
22:11Heard Michael Jordan here
22:12in the midst of the celebration.
22:13What are you saying
22:14to the other players, Mike?
22:15All you can do
22:16is wish some good luck.
22:16I mean, you know,
22:17we fought hard.
22:18You know, they were the better team.
22:19You know, we want to be where they are.
22:21But we still got to win our turn.
22:22We're still trying to improve our team.
22:24They were the better team,
22:25and they play better today.
22:29We were sitting in the locker room
22:31after the game,
22:32and nothing was said.
22:35Everyone just sat there
22:36for a moment.
22:39We had a chance to beat them.
22:41We just didn't respond.
22:42You know, we got to that hill.
22:44We almost looked over the hill.
22:47I was devastated.
22:48I was absolutely devastated.
22:52I cried on the bus.
22:53My father came home and said,
22:54look, it's just one game.
22:57Bounce back.
22:57Come back next year.
22:58I remember losing to the Pistons.
23:05Damn Pistons.
23:08God, that shit hurt.
23:11You couldn't deny
23:12that they were a great team.
23:14We had to either change
23:16something about ourselves,
23:17or we weren't going to beat them.
23:19Can't touch this!
23:20Can't touch this!
23:20Congratulations.
23:21Can't touch this!
23:22Thanks, Pat.
23:23Can't touch this!
23:24After that game,
23:26instead of us all going on vacation,
23:28we all showed up
23:29and we started working out.
23:33And everybody,
23:34starting with Michael,
23:36changed.
23:37Before the Pistons,
23:38Michael didn't weight train.
23:40He didn't go in much
23:41for strength training,
23:42and after getting
23:42the shit beat out of him,
23:44the Pistons finally decided,
23:45I got to put some muscle on.
23:46I was getting brutally beaten up.
23:50And I want to administer pain.
23:54You know, I want to start,
23:55you know, fighting back.
23:57It's very difficult to add muscle
23:59for an athlete
24:00that's constantly burning calories
24:01and running up and down
24:02all the time.
24:04We started at 200.
24:06We added five pounds
24:09until he got to 215.
24:14One, two, three, four,
24:16I put it in
24:21just to get myself
24:23physically strong enough
24:24to go against Detroit.
24:25I was a slender, skiddy kid.
24:27You know, now,
24:28if I put on a couple pounds,
24:30I can throw my weight around
24:31a little bit more now.
24:32I would give him
24:33a certain amount of reps to do.
24:35He would never stop
24:36at that number.
24:37If I asked for six,
24:39I know he was going to do 12.
24:40He got to the point
24:43where he was just like,
24:44instead of them dishing it to me,
24:48I'm going to dish it back to them.
24:49One of the criticisms has been,
24:54you know, Michael Jordan's
24:54a great player,
24:55but he can't lead his teammates
24:57to a championship.
24:58He can't make them
24:59better players.
25:01You were known
25:01at that time
25:02as the guy
25:03who was a spectacular performer,
25:05but not the winner
25:06that Magic and Larry were.
25:08Which ate at me.
25:10It didn't.
25:11It didn't.
25:12My energy
25:14started to
25:16gear towards
25:17my teammates
25:18and pushing them
25:19to excel.
25:21Michael forced
25:21the hand of a lot
25:23of the players
25:23to really dedicate themselves
25:25to off-season training.
25:27Like, okay,
25:28we're going to spend
25:28the summer dedicated
25:29to this proposition
25:30that we're not going to be
25:32runners-up.
25:33We're going to be champions.
25:35Michael was on us.
25:38No mistakes allowed.
25:40Man, I see
25:40a screaming
25:41devil.
25:42You make a mistake.
25:44He's going to scream at you.
25:46He's going to belittle you.
25:48He demands
25:49almost perfection.
25:51Man, when you see
25:52your leader
25:53working extremely hard
25:55in practice,
25:57you feel like,
25:59oh, man,
25:59if I don't give it my all,
26:01I shouldn't be here.
26:02He taught me
26:03how to stay
26:05in the gym,
26:06and he spent
26:07a lot of time
26:08starting to build
26:09the confidence
26:10that I needed.
26:11Pippen became
26:12my focal point.
26:14More than any other player,
26:15Scottie benefited
26:16from playing
26:16with Michael Jordan
26:17because Scottie
26:20had this raw
26:21athletic ability.
26:25What he didn't have
26:26was what Michael
26:27brought every day,
26:28which was the drive
26:30to be the very best
26:31every single day,
26:32the mental focus
26:34of the game.
26:37I got to help.
26:38I got to give him
26:39the fuck.
26:40I'm going to get
26:40to the smoke.
26:41I'm going to go.
26:43The thing about Pipp
26:44is, you know,
26:45you stand next to him,
26:47you make him stronger.
26:49All the Detroit times
26:51when Robyn
26:52wanted to pick on him,
26:54he needed someone there
26:55to stand there
26:56and say,
26:57look, I'll fight with you.
26:57Just fight.
26:59Scottie and I bonded,
27:01you know,
27:01because he felt like,
27:03okay, he has someone
27:03that he can count on.
27:05And I'm looking at,
27:06okay, I got someone
27:07who I can actually count on.
27:09And then Horace
27:10came right behind that.
27:12During the time
27:12that the Pistons
27:13ran over us,
27:15every time they'd
27:16do something to us,
27:17we would complain
27:18to the referee
27:18or we would try
27:19to go back at them.
27:22Horace used to get
27:22beaten up.
27:24I think he got Grinch
27:25with the elbow
27:26on the side.
27:27He would come back
27:27whining.
27:29I just,
27:29don't fucking whine.
27:31Don't let them
27:31see you whine.
27:32That's when they know
27:33they got you.
27:34With them being more
27:35mentally dominant
27:36than we were,
27:37they knew
27:38as soon as we
27:39started complaining,
27:40they had us
27:41and they did.
27:42Horace Grant
27:43has got to realize
27:44this game is not over.
27:45You can't give
27:46the world champions
27:47anything.
27:49Just be strong.
27:50You know,
27:50we're going to beat
27:51these Bullets.
27:52In 91,
27:53the Bulls were determined
27:55to be the tougher team.
27:57The pain of losing
27:58to Detroit again
28:00the year before
28:01brought a fury
28:03into that season
28:04that they had not had.
28:07Jordan knocks
28:08the ball out of bounds.
28:09No, he didn't.
28:10He saved it
28:10and played the fifth.
28:11Oh, what a hundred!
28:12You've been cranking
28:12into the fifth
28:13and played by Jordan.
28:14Here's a pass stolen by Jordan.
28:16Being around Michael
28:17every day like that,
28:19it just brought it out of us.
28:21Scotty evolved,
28:22Horace evolved,
28:23I evolved.
28:24It was just a great feeling.
28:27We had matured
28:27in a lot of ways,
28:28physically,
28:29mentally.
28:31Jordan dribbles out,
28:32hook past the Clippin'
28:32underneath for the dunk.
28:33It was time for us
28:35to become the top team
28:37in the game.
28:47And now,
28:48the starting lineup
28:50for your Chicago Bulls!
28:56Everybody in Chicago
28:57hated the Pistons.
28:59This was personal.
29:00Like, if anybody says
29:01it wasn't personal,
29:02it was personal.
29:04In the end,
29:05of the best of seven.
29:07I didn't even really want
29:08to deal with my relatives
29:09in Detroit
29:10during that period.
29:11I didn't want to go
29:12stay with them.
29:13My first cousins,
29:14yeah, yeah, yeah,
29:14whatever.
29:15Well, you know,
29:16we don't like you right now.
29:17They don't like us.
29:17We had a character challenge
29:22the last two years
29:23and we failed.
29:24But that third year,
29:27we put them
29:28in our rearview mirror.
29:30Lampea.
29:31Jordan with the steal.
29:33Jordan.
29:35We're going to the call.
29:36Michael Jordan
29:37is not going to back down
29:38from anyone right now.
29:39He's the leader
29:39for that team.
29:40He understands
29:41what to expect
29:42during the series.
29:42He's going to hold
29:43his ground
29:43and make a statement.
29:47I thought we were
29:50a good enough team
29:52to at least
29:54make the series
29:55a little bit more
29:56competitive
29:56and we didn't.
29:58Tipping against Vinny
29:59up the right side
30:00to the baseline.
30:01Fills it up
30:02and a foul.
30:03All right, Ahmad.
30:11Game four
30:11of the best of seven.
30:14Nice fake by Jordan.
30:16Goes to the scoge.
30:17Do you know something's
30:29coming?
30:31This team's desperate.
30:32They've done
30:33everything they can.
30:34Now they're really desperate.
30:36Tom Strong
30:37and Greg Codgers
30:38now in the backcourt.
30:39Cliff Levin's
30:39field front right.
30:40And Scottie Pippen
30:41up for a beautiful
30:42backcourt pass
30:43from Pippen.
30:43And he has walloped.
30:45And that will be
30:45a flagrant foul.
30:46And it's getting
30:48very, very tough
30:49out there.
30:51Dennis,
30:51Ahmad,
30:52Bush, Scottie
30:52and could have
30:54injured him
30:55pretty severely.
30:58It was clearly
30:59a flagrant foul.
31:02It's a clear-cut
31:03cheap shot.
31:04All right,
31:04no question.
31:05Clear-cut.
31:06Scottie Pippen
31:06was racked up.
31:09When Pippen
31:10didn't respond
31:11to that abuse,
31:14there's nothing
31:14they could do
31:15to beat us in.
31:16Scottie was
31:21unshakable.
31:23Didn't even
31:23want a band-aid.
31:24When we saw that,
31:25it was over.
31:26You know,
31:27it was just like,
31:27okay,
31:28it's a foul.
31:29Let's go ahead
31:30and finish
31:30kicking their ass
31:31and, you know.
31:32And put them
31:33out of their misery.
31:34Short rebound.
31:36He has Pippen.
31:37Chicago Bulls
31:40about to put the
31:42Pistons away
31:43in four.
31:44And Pippen
31:46is going to
31:46feed it off
31:47to Jordan.
31:48And Chuck is now
31:49clearing the fence.
31:51Still a genuine
31:51draft player
31:52of the game.
31:53Scottie Pippen
31:54of the Chicago Bulls.
31:55We were tasting
31:56victory
31:57over a team
31:59that just
31:59kicked your butt
32:00for the last
32:01three or four years.
32:03I mean,
32:03the gratification,
32:04you truly
32:05cannot put it
32:07into words.
32:11So there's all over.
32:15That was the only time
32:16that I think
32:17I had ever been swept
32:19in the series.
32:21I was normally
32:22the one doing
32:22the sweeping.
32:27Their time
32:28had arrived
32:28and ours was over.
32:32As we're coming
32:33out of the game,
32:35Lambeer said,
32:36you know,
32:36we're not shaking
32:38their hands.
32:39This is how
32:40we're leaving.
32:42Contestant wasting
32:43full time
32:43and getting out
32:44of here
32:44as they are
32:46headed off.
32:47We didn't shake
32:47hands and we just
32:48walked off the court.
32:49Fuck you guys.
32:50Thank you for
32:50kicking high ass.
32:51They left the bench
32:53over 7 and 9
32:5410 seconds remaining.
32:55The Pistons just left.
32:57I think it was
32:58very difficult
32:58for them because
32:59they were two-time
33:01champions.
33:02But, you know,
33:03there certainly
33:03has to be
33:04some respect.
33:06Straight up bitches.
33:09That's what
33:09they walked off like.
33:12Now,
33:12we just kicked your ass.
33:13Go ahead and go.
33:15Detroit had a
33:16similar thing
33:16with Boston
33:18that we had
33:18with them.
33:19They had to
33:19overcome Boston
33:20and they did.
33:21And I can still
33:22remember
33:22it was the first
33:23time that
33:24Detroit beat them.
33:26And I can
33:27see Kevin McHale
33:28coming out
33:29to half court
33:29and shaking hands
33:30and things like that.
33:31now, Adrian Dantley
33:35was shooting
33:36a free throw
33:37and the Boston Celtics
33:39were walking
33:39off during the game
33:42and I grabbed
33:44McHale
33:45and then he stopped
33:48as he was walking
33:49off the floor.
33:51That's how they
33:52left the floor.
33:53and to us
33:54that was okay.
33:57Knowing what
33:58we know now
33:59and the aftermath
34:01of what took place,
34:04I think all of us
34:05would have stopped
34:05and said,
34:06hey,
34:06congratulate,
34:07like they do now.
34:08Hey,
34:08congratulate,
34:09love you,
34:09man,
34:09love you.
34:10Hey,
34:10congratulate you.
34:11I mean,
34:11we would have did it.
34:12Of course we would have
34:12done it.
34:14But during that
34:15period of time,
34:16that's just not
34:18how it was passed.
34:20When you lost,
34:21you left the floor.
34:22How's it?
34:23This is Isaiah
34:24talking about
34:26the walk-off.
34:28Well,
34:29I know it's all bullshit.
34:31Whatever he says now,
34:32you know it wasn't
34:32his true actions then.
34:34You know,
34:34it's time enough
34:35to think about it
34:35or the reaction
34:37of the public
34:37that's kind of
34:38changed his perspective
34:39of it.
34:41You can show me
34:42anything you want.
34:43There's no way
34:44you can convince me
34:45he wasn't an asshole.
34:48Knowing what we know now
34:50and the aftermath
34:53of what took place,
34:55but during that
34:56period of time,
34:57that's just not
34:59how it was passed.
35:01Just wasn't.
35:02And you can go back
35:03and you can look at
35:03any of those old games
35:05or whatever.
35:06When you lost,
35:06you left the floor.
35:08All you got to do
35:09is you go back
35:10to us losing
35:12in Game 7.
35:15I shook everybody's hand.
35:17Two years
35:17in a row.
35:18We shook their hands
35:20when they beat us.
35:21There was a certain
35:22respect to the game
35:23that we paid
35:24to them.
35:27That's sportsmanship.
35:28No matter how much
35:29it hurts,
35:30and believe me,
35:31it fucking hurt,
35:32but they didn't have
35:33to shake our hands.
35:34We knew we whipped
35:35their ass already.
35:36We'd gotten past them,
35:38and that was the most,
35:39that's, to me,
35:39that was better than,
35:40you know,
35:40in some ways,
35:41winning a championship.
35:42See you,
36:04you see me.
36:05Hittin' you just like a home run
36:07Slammin' like a slam dunk
36:08Ride the wave
36:09James Brown gay fuck
36:10It happened to James
36:11Like it happened to me
36:12How you think you feel
36:14To see another MC get paid
36:15Cause I'm using my rap style
36:17And I'm playing the background
36:19Meanwhile, I ain't with that
36:21You can't forget that
36:22You took style
36:23I'm taking it back
36:24Coming back
36:25Like a turn of the jazz
36:26Suck the MC's in the place
36:28That's how it's coming
36:29And I'm gonna rock
36:31Never rock records
36:32How you like me now?
36:34How you like me now?
36:43Bunk, bunk, bunk
36:44Bunk, bunk
36:48Now, brothers, I'm riding in
36:53Like a party
36:54To a party, watch me
36:55Stand around and judge me
36:56Become a rapper
36:57Then try to rock me
36:59How you like me now?
37:08How you like me now?
37:08In sports, the stage is set
37:27For the Air Magic Show
37:28In the NBA Finals
37:29Starting Sunday
37:30It'll be Michael Jordan
37:31And the Chicago Bulls
37:32Against Magic Johnson
37:33And the L.A. Lakers
37:35You know, when you're a competitor
37:37You want to play against the best
37:39I played against Larry
37:41And I've always wanted to play
37:43Against Michael
37:43Up until that point
37:46It was a stigma that
37:47Michael Jordan
37:48All he does is win scoring titles
37:50He never wins championships
37:51That was my chance
37:53To get in
37:55The category of Larry Bird
37:57And Magic Johnson
37:58I guess this is something that
38:00I've been winning
38:01This team has won it the most
38:03I've been in the league
38:05Even though they may have that experience
38:07They may have that home
38:08The NBA is a league of stars
38:11And none shine brighter
38:12Than Magic Johnson
38:13And Michael Jordan
38:14And while much has been said
38:16About their respective teams
38:17Nothing has been more anticipated
38:19Than their individual matchup
38:21And we're set
38:26For the start of game one
38:28And the opening tip
38:29Controlled by
38:30The L.A. Lakers
38:31And Magic Johnson
38:32Moves across
38:33Against Michael Jordan
38:35You know, we were nervous
38:37You know, the first time
38:39And we didn't even play well
38:40Now Magic got it out
38:41For Worthy
38:42What a play
38:43Magic Johnson
38:44You know, Sam Perkins
38:45Hits a three at the end
38:46The Bulls lose game one
38:49Everybody
38:50Including me
38:51Goes, okay
38:52The Lakers gonna win this thing
38:53They beat us on our home court
38:54But in our minds
38:56We had a chance
38:57To beat these guys
38:58And we didn't even play good
38:59So we're looking forward
39:01To game two
39:01And we are set
39:02For game two
39:03Of the NBA Finals
39:05So game two
39:07Jordan goes nuts
39:08Overstock
39:10Michael Jordan
39:12On fire
39:13He's got it
39:13With a straight field goal
39:15For Michael Jordan
39:17Magic Johnson's the greatest point guard
39:42I've ever seen
39:42And Scottie Pippen
39:44Was picking Magic Johnson
39:45Up full court
39:45Nobody did that
39:48Scottie accepted that challenge
39:51And I knew
39:52What Scottie was gonna do
39:53I see it in practice
39:54All the time
39:55It gets up in your face
39:56And it harasses you
39:58And Pippen
39:58Never let him get started
40:00Once we did that
40:11In game two
40:12We never looked back
40:14And it's this simple
40:39The Lakers have to win
40:41Three in a row
40:42Game five moments away
40:44Hello everybody
40:45I'm Bob Costas
40:46This is the Larry O'Brien Trophy
40:48All indications are
40:50That by evening's end
40:51It'll be in the possession
40:52Of the Chicago Bulls
40:53Game five
40:57Is a great back and forth
40:59Back and forth
41:00Back and forth game
41:01Magic fires for Smith
41:04Good recovery
41:05It comes
41:06Lakers with a one point lead
41:09Jordan with a gorgeous move
41:11The Bulls lead it
41:12By three
41:12Patrick
41:13Right there
41:14Ducks it off
41:15At the three
41:17The Bulls
41:18And the Lakers
41:19Are tied at 80
41:21So the fourth quarter
41:25It's a precarious lead
41:27So during a timeout
41:29Phil asks Michael
41:31MJ who's open
41:32And he goes
41:33Paxson
41:33He goes
41:34All right
41:34Then get him the ball
41:35You don't have to shoot
41:36That shot
41:37John's open right there
41:39He's hitting shots
41:43Phil said
41:45You know
41:45Forcefully
41:46Paxson is open
41:47Get him the ball
41:48And I started looking
41:50For Paxson
41:50Everybody
41:51You know
41:52In the world
41:52Is expecting Jordan
41:53To force something
41:54Through a double team
41:55He doesn't do it
41:57He draws and dishes
41:58He trusts his teammate
42:03To make the shot
42:05Once Pax hits that first shot
42:07He says
42:07Oh okay
42:08Fine
42:08Let me do this again
42:10Penetrate
42:11Find Pax
42:12And he just kept hitting him
42:13Kept hitting him
42:14Kept hitting him
42:14Again
42:15That was exactly
42:18What Phil was trying
42:19To get Michael
42:19To understand
42:20And believe in
42:21Over the couple years
42:22Is that
42:23Hey these other guys
42:24Can help you out
42:24It's a two point lead
42:26For Chicago
42:27John Paxson
42:28Yes
42:29John Paxson
42:31Again
42:31And the Chicago Bulls
42:34Have won
42:35Their first ever
42:36NBA championship
42:38Let's go
43:08When you get to that finish line
43:25And you know that you won
43:26All those emotions
43:28That you wrapped up into
43:29You can just kind of let go
43:30I mean everybody knows
43:36Has the picture of
43:37In their mind
43:39When we beat Cleveland
43:40On that last shot
43:41And he's punching the air
43:42And he's all excited
43:43That's who we knew
43:44The competitive Michael Jordan
43:47The win at all cost
43:50Michael Jordan
43:51Sometimes we question
43:54Whether he was human
43:55Whether he had feelings
43:58Just a guy that was
44:00Totally focused on one thing
44:01And one thing only
44:02The only emotion
44:04We had ever seen out of him
44:05Was anger or frustration
44:07We were literally stunned
44:09To see those emotions
44:10When they beat us
44:19Well we met in between
44:22Both locker rooms
44:23And he just
44:24Put his arms
44:25And just started crying
44:27And he was so happy
44:28That he had won
44:29That he busted through
44:30That was a special moment
44:32For him and myself
44:35It's a beautiful feeling
44:37But if you're gonna lose
44:38You're gonna lose to them
44:39You know
44:39And I'm gonna lose to Michael
44:40And that's how it should be
44:43At last
44:46I fit somewhere
44:47In the category of Larry Bird
44:49And Magic Johnson
44:50Bruce
44:56And
45:09What leels
45:09With
45:11And
45:12What leels
45:13With
45:14On
45:16My
45:17My
45:18The
45:19The
45:19The
45:20Shit, come on, drop my money down.
45:23You told me I can't show nobody what I can use.
45:25No, we're here. Don't show it to anybody.
45:27Let me show it.
45:29Yeah.
45:31Denver, Denver.
45:35How about them barcode?
45:37Hey, there he is.
45:38Hey, hey.
45:39Hey.
45:40Cheesehead.
45:42Security.
45:44Security.
45:46This man will never get sleep.
45:49Dennis Rodman.
45:50Hey, don't say that on camera, yo.
45:53Yeah, he's never been a single man and he thinks he can hang out all night.
45:57Hey, hey, don't put that on tape.
45:59Don't put that on tape.
46:00If he's admitted to one girl, Em, Em, come on.
46:03That's a lie.
46:04He's a lie.
46:05He dialed out every night.
46:06Do not put this on tape right here, Em.
46:08Why not?
46:09That's messed up.
46:10Get some sleep, man.
46:11I did get it.
46:12I got a whole lot of sleep.
46:13You got a hangover this morning?
46:14No, Em.
46:15Mom and Dad are going to watch this now.
46:17Mom and Dad, he's an alcoholic.
46:18Hey.
46:19Hey, Phil.
46:20Hey, Phil.
46:21Hey, Phil.
46:22He can't work for the media to be on this plane.
46:25Right here.
46:26See him?
46:27The highest paid media guy in the world.
46:29Come on, Ahmad makes more than me.
46:31No.
46:32He wishes, though.
46:33He wishes he does.
46:34Believe in you.
46:39KFC finally won.
46:41It's actually kind of like a sign of times are changing.
46:44Might be changing in the NBA, too.
46:45While the Chicago Bulls were on the road, their GM took his shot back home.
46:57Jerry Krause again made his plans for next season very clear.
47:00Coach Phil Jackson won't be back, and with Michael Jordan on record as saying he won't
47:04play for anyone other than Jackson, Krause told the Chicago Tribune, quote, if Michael chooses
47:09to leave because there's another coach here, then it's his choice, not ours.
47:13We would love to have Michael back, but Michael is going to have to play for someone else.
47:17It isn't going to be Phil.
47:19If Phil's not back, then certainly I'm not back.
47:22So, I mean, you know, it doesn't leave me with any other choices, but not to play next year.
47:27There's absolutely no room at all for you coming back under any other circumstances.
47:30None.
47:31None.
47:32None at all.
47:33The Bulls were dominating the East.
47:38The East didn't seem to be a question.
47:40The question was out West with the team that they had met in the finals the year before,
47:44Utah.
47:45Now, keep in mind, this was probably a finals preview.
47:51This is the litmus test.
47:54Good evening, everyone, and welcome to the Delta Center.
47:57And the thing that's really surprising is the timing of that story by Jerry Krause.
48:03Yeah, Dick.
48:04Unfortunately, it's very cold.
48:06It's sad.
48:07And if you really think about this, performance and loyalty by the coaches and players are being
48:13just thrown out the window.
48:16And the Bulls starting out sharply, lead 8-2.
48:20Here is Rodman, and Pippen got the East ball.
48:23And Jordan hits the open shot.
48:25The Bulls are doing it all.
48:27It has been all Bulls.
48:28Great pass from Longley to a cutting, Scottie Pippen.
48:32And it's a 47-24 lead.
48:35The Chicago Bulls are running the Jazz while on the Jazz home court.
48:40East ball, Karl Malone.
48:42So, Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, here it is.
48:44Now, Bernie Miron and Rodman, and the double foul is going to be called.
48:47You can see that this could ignite something here that we don't need.
48:51The Jazz with a 7-0 run of their own here.
48:54And it's an 8-point game, believe it or not.
48:57This is as close as the Jazz have come.
48:59Malone over Pippen.
49:01He's got it.
49:02He's got it.
49:03He's right.
49:04He's unfit.
49:05Yeah, unstoppable.
49:06Nice.
49:07Here's the line.
49:08Yes!
49:09And the Jazz have come back in.
49:12And a standing ovation for the Jazz who had a fight way back in this game.
49:16Utah Jazz ending up sweeping the Chicago Bulls this year, winning here in Salt Lake City.
49:24But, Jerry Krause, the big question is why?
49:26Why now come out with a statement like this here at the All-Star break?
49:29I mean, this is something for after the season.
49:30You know, I think it's just a bad case of judgment on his part.
49:34Well, Reggie, this looks like a reality check for everybody.
49:36Is this the end of the Bulls as we know them?
50:06Yeah.
50:07Yeah.
50:08The end of the Bulls as we know them are.
50:09Yeah.
50:10Yeah.
50:11Yeah.
50:12They're all right.
50:13Yeah!
50:14I think it's false.
50:15Yeah.
50:17Yeah.
50:19Yeah.
50:20Yeah.
50:21Yeah.
50:23Yeah.
50:24Yeah.
50:26Yeah.
50:27Yeah.
50:29Yeah.
50:30Yeah.
50:31Yeah.
50:32Yeah.
