00:00based on your understanding raven what exactly are we trying to resolve here today
00:10whether i killed my wife or not for 20 years raven aberroa has maintained his innocence in
00:18the fatal stabbing of his wife janet i did not kill my wife in 2014 after his trial ended in
00:24a hung jury raven accepted a controversial alfred plea deal that allowed him to maintain his innocence
00:30but required him to serve time and then they just expect the public to just jump into this
00:36proof he's a murderer it was known that he was not necessarily the most perfect husband this was just
00:41character assassination because they have this gut feeling raven's guilty it was the husband raven
00:48claims he only took the plea to ensure he would be there for his son caden never once did i ever
00:54think oh my god my dad killed my mom but many members of the community still believe he is
00:59responsible for janet's death you know i get a lot of death threats you're getting death threats i get
01:04death threats raven has come to us to put suspicions to rest but will the polygraph test confirm his
01:11innocence do you believe raven killed his wife janet yes without a doubt or show that he has been
01:17manipulating everyone for years the test is about to begin please remain still
01:24i'm in salt lake city to meet raven aberroa
01:41i want to understand why raven pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the gruesome murder of his
01:50wife janet to this day it's a crime he says he didn't commit i kind of need a moment to sort of
01:57set this case up with you because there were a lot of moving parts in this janet aberroa got married
02:02young she met raven in college raven was full of life raven has always been outgoing janet's a little
02:11bit more quiet we really got to know each other and we would just talk about you know all sorts of
02:17things and i know she's just my daughter-in-law but i really felt like janet was my daughter raven
02:23and janet both only 25 seemed like the perfect young couple but beneath the surface they were
02:29struggling raven and janet were not necessarily the happiest the couple was known to have issues
02:33raven had cheated and janet was aware of it they'd recently separated the marriage seemed to be over
02:39when the couple discovered that janet was pregnant they got back together around the same time that
02:44kaden was born they'd been together around six months when janet was in april 2005 raven found
02:53his wife dead in their home in durham north carolina raven had left janet and their infant son kaden that
03:00night to attend a soccer match in a frantic 911 call raven told dispatchers he'd come home to find janet
03:07dead 9-1-1 where is your emergency okay i'm gonna have to stop yelling so i can understand you
03:15is your wife conscious
03:22okay janet had been stabbed three times once in the chest once in the neck which was fatal and on the
03:27hands which suggests she was defending herself tell me exactly what is going on there i came in to my
03:35house i came upstairs um the lights were off the door was cracked open i thought i thought left it
03:41open it was a strange crime scene there's no sign of forced entry there are no witnesses there's no
03:46sign in the house that there's been any kind of ransacking or rummaging through and janet doesn't have
03:50any defensive wounds except for that on her hand in the beginning after it came out that she was
03:56murdered i thought they would find the murderer but i just kept seeing things come up about like
04:02raven and pointing towards him and i kept thinking why isn't there anyone saying anything like about
04:08any other possibilities people started getting suspicious of raven pretty soon after the crime
04:13there was a lot to say about raven and not a lot of it was positive janet's friends and families
04:18that he was controlling that he was kind of a force in the home and that jenna was scared of him
04:23right after the murder raven got out of town and went to salt lake city people thought that looked
04:29pretty suspicious you would think that somebody who was wanting to assist in the investigation about
04:34his wife's murder would stay in town as time went on uh janet's family became convinced that raven
04:39was the only person who could have been responsible for that murder
04:41so it took police a while to charge raven with anything that's because it took time for his story
04:52to fall apart in 2007 raven met another woman named vanessa pond within a four month span they very
04:59quickly fell in love and got married right after they got married vanessa says that raven's behavior
05:05changed he became controlling all the things that they said he was about janet raven and vanessa ended their
05:11marriage after only four months and she was left with strong suspicions about her now ex-husband
05:17raven was in charge with a crime for nearly five years when his new wife reached out to detectives
05:23to say that raven was manipulating and that she felt he was capable of murder she felt as though his
05:28behavior towards her indicated that he very well could have killed his first wife he told me how much
05:33he hated me and how much he didn't care if i died and how he couldn't get in trouble for it anymore
05:41i still don't know what that means compelled to action by janet's family and vanessa's accusations
05:47police exhumed janet's body for more clues they found contact lenses still in janet's eyes a piece
05:53of evidence that police said contradicted raven's statements according to the police raven had said
06:00janet was about to go to bed but according to janet's family her contacts would have been off
06:05if she were indeed about to go to bed this discrepancy was enough to charge raven police
06:10believe that the contacts still in janet's eyes proved that raven had lied about the timeline of
06:15the murder five years after janet's death raven was arrested in salt lake city he was extradited
06:22back to durham where he was charged with janet's murder from that point the story blew up it became
06:27huge national news because they lacked any direct evidence the prosecution had to kind of embark on
06:34a character assassination of raven everything pointed to raven the infidelity the financial
06:40difficulties the controlling behavior that her friends and family said he had it was a pretty
06:45clear case that raven was not the husband you would have wanted raven was tried for janet's murder but
06:51the jury became hopelessly deadlocked and after two days of deliberations the case ended with a mistrial
06:57just before raven's second trial was set to begin prosecutors offered him a deal plead guilty to
07:04a lesser murder charge voluntary manslaughter without admitting guilt but acknowledging that
07:11prosecutors had enough evidence in the case against him to make a conviction likely raven made an alfred
07:18plea which meant that he could plead guilty without actually having to admit that he'd killed janet i didn't
07:23receive a fair trial the first time i don't think i'll receive a fair trial the second time and i don't
07:29think it's worth risking the possibility spending the rest of my life in prison for something i need
07:36to do i take this plea to ensure that that doesn't happen and that's the only reason i did not kill my wife
07:43raven accepted the deal he served a total of eight and a half years all the while maintaining he had
07:49nothing to do with janet's death seven years have passed since raven was released from prison i'm
07:55meeting with raven and his now adult son caden to understand why after so many years they are sitting
08:02down for a polygraph test hey how are you man how are you brother good thanks for coming over yeah thanks
08:08for having me appreciate you gentlemen good to meet you man okay how are you man i'm doing good to see
08:18you no i appreciate you taking the time to talk to me uh i know this has been a significant part of
08:24both of your lives for some time now and raven let me start with you how would you describe your life
08:29these days it's like a house of cards that i live in so like at any moment you know like if anything bad
08:34happens in a relationship and work it's always this background of well he's a murderer he's a
08:42felon people do try to call my employers all the time and post stuff online where i'm working and
08:47stuff so i mean i started a career like four months ago and literally two hours after my orientation they
08:53like called me and gave me a check and were like we didn't realize you're raven at barroa so i always
08:57feel like i'm always going to be the one to take the blame for anything kaden i could ask you a question
09:03but i want you to react to what you just heard from your father i mean it kind of feels unfair
09:09it just kind of happened to me i didn't have a say in any of the matter like you know i didn't have
09:15any choice in this but it happened to me and now i got to face the consequences for that when again like
09:21you know what did i do i was just a baby what do you think when you hear that um i think the hardest
09:27thing for me is he becomes guilty by association when he's just a kid you know and he's just trying
09:36to navigate all those things that teens have to navigate and i think part of that is why we're here
09:42today because one of the things that i tell my son to do all the time is to just keep going keep
09:49working you know and ignore everything else but the truth is i'm not fighting you know i'm just sitting
09:56here getting beat up all the time and i don't know that that's the best example to be to him like
10:02we can fight a little bit like it's okay april 2005 raven yeah what happened walk me through the day
10:13my wife was murdered it was what happened and i found her is what happened for all intents and
10:22purposes i mean it was a pretty normal day we picked caden up on the way home from work then you
10:28know it's usually just kind of unwinding figuring out dinner and then i had a soccer game that night
10:34i made my way home um and then upon returning home uh is when i found my wife you know it was calling
10:42911 checking on my son the officers got there and trying to be helpful to the police and trying to like
10:49juggle like you know where's my wife where's my son what's like what's happening right now and and uh
10:57uh 20 years later uh no answers no answers caden did you ever ask him have you ever asked him dad did you
11:09kill mom i don't have to i i i don't have to because
11:25i know like never once did i ever think oh my god my dad killed my mom like never once i thought this
11:33was ridiculous what everyone was saying about him like none of it made sense like it just it shocks me
11:40have you at any time regretted taking the plea deal the answer is most definitely yes but when it comes to
11:52being home i mean i will see him i'm extremely grateful for that the alford plead was really the
12:00only decision if you were sitting in that trial from start to finish you would realize that prosecution
12:06was going to drag it out and raven's big thing is he wanted to be home with caden that was the only
12:13the only possibility is it possible that in taking the plea you've created a cloud for your son which
12:23maybe isn't there at all if you stand with your chest out on principle and you say i didn't do it bring
12:29it on yeah i think the language of the alford plea and what it means um helped me to make the decision
12:36to take it because it isn't an admission of guilt and what we had found in the trial is that the
12:42mistakes that i made in our relationship that seemed to be what i was on trial for and that i am guilty of
12:50tell me why you're sitting for this polygraph exam
12:52that's the reason i'm sitting for it i just want him to know that i'm still willing to make the tough
13:00choices you know most of the time i just want to hide under a rock but um but i'm willing to make
13:05the tough choices this is a tough choice it's yeah it's a tough choice well then let's head over and
13:12let's talk after okay all right do you want to be accepted again in the mainstream of society i want
13:27to not be scared that makes sense i am scared to build relationships i'm scared to build community
13:35because i don't fit in to those communities because of you know i'm a accused murderer and
13:42so so yeah like i want to fit in i think in my professional career i can't really advance past
13:48you know the grunt electrician because people won't put me in leadership roles and so everyone
13:53like it's i feel like everyone's moving on in their life and i'm still this you know traumatized 25
13:59year old just trying to stunt it yeah yeah do people eventually because you know there's sleuths
14:06all over the place so everyone is do people figure out who you are at some point have people online
14:11you know i get a lot of death threats um you're getting death threats i get death threats you know
14:16if i see you on the streets um you deserve you know all the things that they want to do to me you've
14:23got to live with this every day every day yeah and the thing is like my son has to live with it too
14:29like as he gets older he starts getting the messages and then like they hate him for yeah
14:34saying i love my dad my dad taking the polygraph test definitely makes me like nervous this is the
14:43opportunity to finally tell our side that i feel like has gotten silenced for a while now well raven
14:51we're here you've made a difficult choice to do this for your family and i wish you i wish you well
14:56on the exam thanks so much okay my name is george olivo i'm a retired fbi polygraph examiner conducted
15:07over 2 000 polygraph examinations for the fbi everything from bank robberies homicide child
15:12molestations kidnappings so today i'm testing raven abaroa who was accused in 2005 of murdering his wife
15:20hey raven good to meet you i'm george good to meet you george thank you for coming have a seat
15:25please i think the stakes are very high for raven he's wanting to clear his name his son who was in
15:32the house when his wife was murdered is now a young man in his 20s and this has i think serious
15:39implications for him and his son moving forward so i heard about your story raven and i'm not here to
15:48judge you and i'm not here to doubt you so that means we have to work together so you know what
15:54that means right working together means we got to be completely honest with each other okay all
15:58right good so i'm going to ask you a few questions before we get into the polygraph just so i can get
16:02to know you a little bit better okay so your wife janet who passed away how long were you married with
16:08janet almost five years five years i know it's hard to put a number on it but thinking back to when
16:13you and janet were together on a scale of one to ten one horrible marriage where you're fighting all
16:18the time ten marriage is almost perfect where would you put that relationship that you had um i mean
16:27we had some problems like we were separated and we went through some hard times but um being honest
16:33with her is what saved our marriage and what made our marriage a 10 you know like like i didn't realize
16:41that because i i wasn't always a 10 on honesty you know i did want to you know say things that
16:47wouldn't offend people or you know uh do the white lies or the you know most of the truth or whatever
16:56you know to not get myself or other people in trouble so um so i personally want to say we were at a
17:0110 yeah yeah when when she died when she died you were at a 10 yeah okay
17:09this is the obvious question based on your understanding raven what exactly are we trying
17:14to resolve here today whether i killed my wife or not if you had anything to do with jana's death the
17:19polygraph is going to indicate that on the other hand if you had nothing to do with it have nothing to
17:24hide the polygraph will show that as well yeah okay now before we go any further i just want to ask you
17:31did you have anything to do with janet's death i did not have you ever hurt or harmed anyone before
17:39no well i mean i've been in fights before been in fights yes like so yes barroom fights uh yes
17:48prison fights so yeah have you ever harmed anyone in any situation other than self-defense no okay
17:57good what do you think happened to janet i mean there was a couple things that had happened that
18:05i told the cops about you know like there was a number of break-ins um one of them right across
18:11the street that made me think that that could potentially be just a crime of convenience type
18:18of thing where um they had gotten broke into the night before and that person had hid out in our house
18:24while they were counting or doing whatever they were doing with the stuff they stole
18:28and then they saw another opportunity by just looking up and being like oh here's a place here
18:33sure do you know if the police is still uh looking for someone in this case oh no no
18:39they arrested me case closed raven has admitted that he made many mistakes in his life and in his
18:46marriage to janet i spoke with raven and his lawyer chantelle argyle about the challenges of countering
18:53the state's personality-based case so what are you seeing as you go through this this is a list and
18:58it's labeled all the bad things and that is something i do where i will go through a case and
19:03i will write down all the bad things that could come out at a trial because you have to anticipate
19:09sure the other side and what they're going to bring up you know about your case give us the top five
19:14raven had affairs raven was moody raven has a temper raven separated from janet raven dated other
19:22women during their separation so you got to anticipate this stuff right some of it's not true
19:28right some of it are things that the police have said about him or friends and family had said about
19:32him that we were going to have to rebut in some way you know 99.9 of this trial was opinion and
19:40circumstantial evidence about his character who he was and you both are here to say that
19:48the prosecution got it wrong if i were prosecuting this and i'm a deputy district attorney myself now
19:54if you do not have a reasonable likelihood of success at trial you are ethically required to
19:59drop the case and they didn't have it okay okay any questions about anything no okay great so the next
20:07thing we're going to do i want to tell you about polygraph i'm going to be recording your physiology
20:12monitoring recording heart race wet gland activity different things and the reason why we record
20:17physiology raven is because unlike the spoken word we say that the body always tells the truth we say
20:23that because it's based on the autonomic nervous system the fight-or-flight response and it's the
20:28perception of jeopardy of getting caught in a lie that causes the fight-or-flight response it was a big
20:34exhale yeah and let me know when you're ready
20:43okay
20:45many people still believe that raven hasn't been honest about janet's death
20:50local reporter brianne dupart followed the investigation and raven's trial for the herald sun
20:55i'm meeting with brianne to better understand the suspicions surrounding raven
21:00the reason i wanted to talk to you is because i've spoken to raven and raven is still mystified
21:07that he was even brought up on charges in this case i'm curious as to what you learned about the
21:12case as you started to dig in there were suspicions about raven all along and so it was known in the
21:19community that he was not necessarily the most perfect husband what did you learn about their
21:24relationship i learned that they were not happy raven had cheated and it was known to janet raven's
21:32having an affair janet finds out about it and yet they stay in the marriage raven and janet were part
21:38of the mormon church divorce is not something that is easily accepted there may have been pressure on
21:44the couple to stay together despite the fact that they weren't happy my understanding is that there were
21:48real difficulties there was also a financial issue with the family they didn't have any money they had a
21:54child but they didn't necessarily have the means to care for that child and money needs were coming
22:00up raven was losing his job janet had a job that didn't pay that much there were signs that things
22:06were not right he couldn't get that job because of some charges that were brought up court documents
22:11showed janet aberoa told friends her husband had wiped out her bank account she told me things were
22:17getting weird i'm wondering what you're hearing from investigators about raven that lead you to maybe
22:24conclude that they're attempting or looking at raven as a suspect the german police are very tight-lipped
22:30however raven's behavior was called into question we were learning that raven was not acting like your
22:37typical victim's husband what you would expect exactly we were learning that he was combative he was
22:43strange what were you starting to learn about the evidence in this case the description of the home
22:49it seemed a little too convenient a home invasion in which there is no evidence of a home invasion
22:55someone's coming in to steal something and they go in that bathroom they're gonna take that jewelry
22:59that's money right there that's another point that tells you he committed the murder she's got an atm
23:05card she's got a checkbook laying right there nobody takes it there's nothing stolen really except
23:13for the few things that only raven has noticed were stolen what did he say there was a computer
23:17missing and there was a computer missing however shortly after that janet's sister had found backup
23:23cds of everything that was on the hard drive of that stolen computer that had been made one day
23:29before the computer went missing it suggested that raven had anticipated the computer would no
23:34longer be in his possession was there ever a motive established an answer to the question of why raven
23:41would do something like this there were a few things floated we found out that janet had a life
23:45insurance policy a life insurance policy that if cashed in would have solved the financial
23:51problems of the family for raven eventually a medical examiner was also able to testify that she
23:56was pregnant and it's possible that raven didn't want another child we have to talk about the contact
24:01lenses that's right janet was someone who took her contacts out before she went to bed at night
24:06raven's story was that janet had been going to bed and was going to be in bed when he got home
24:11years later when investigators exhumed her body they were able to show that she still had her
24:16contacts in suggesting that she hadn't been going to bed at all when she was killed this is the
24:20evidence that the authorities used to bring charges against raven right it shows a giant inconsistency
24:26between what he told investigators happened that night and what actually happened that night with
24:30janet abarroa if you had to sum up the community's reaction what would it be the raven was guilty and that
24:38instead of a home invasion that this had been an act of domestic violence so i have to ask you do
24:43you believe raven abarroa killed his wife janet yes without a doubt
24:53and let me know when you're ready
24:55the test is about to begin please remain still
25:10are you the person who stabbed your wife no don't move your feet please
25:15this part of the test is over please remain still okay raven go ahead and recover that means you can
25:26move i'm going to do something a little bit different sometimes i don't get enough sensitivity
25:33on the fingertips so i'm not seeing as much activity as i'd like to see on those fingertips
25:37so we're going to switch those components okay okay these are a lot more sensitive because they're
25:41placed on the meatier portion of the hand and i should get better sensitivity from that some
25:46people don't have the same sensitivity in the skin and he was beginning to flat line on me but the gel
25:51pads got the activity back to where i need i could see it and measure it okay we're going to do it again
25:58doing okay yeah it's a pressure cooker isn't it come on yeah i mean look at it i know yeah even even
26:06i'm just getting nervous and i'm not even the one strapped up yeah okay i'm ready okay the test is
26:14about to begin please remain still okay are you the person who stabbed your wife no
26:29okay go ahead and recover please it means you can move
26:31occasionally obtaining a clean reading can be difficult this happens for a variety of reasons
26:38sometimes the reason is inadvertent like general anxiety or problems focusing but sometimes it could
26:44be intentional like trying to beat the polygraph test what are you thinking about during the test
26:50i mean i'm trying not to think about anything but well that's not a good answer you got to think
26:54about the question i'm thinking i'm yeah i'm trying to think about the question trying to clear my
26:58make sure i clear my head in between sure so when i asked you about uh stabbing what goes through your
27:05mind when you answer that question i want to just focus on whether i was involved or not but i think
27:11you know there's also the emotion of just finding my wife the business at hand today is is just to tell
27:16the truth and i know it's hard yeah with all the emotional baggage that yeah yeah because i think you're
27:21maybe trying to kind of get in your own way you're in kind of in your own headspace a little bit when
27:27someone's been accused of something serious there's always going to be built-in saliency in the
27:32relevant questions so they're going to be sensitive to the relevant questions whether they did it or not
27:38part of raven's anxiety stems from the intense media scrutiny he has been under for years
27:44in 2014 janet's murder and raven's possible involvement became the focus of a bombshell dateline
27:50episode i'm meeting with raven to watch the episode that changed his life forever raven i want to
27:56talk about an aspect of the case with you because it's confusing to me frankly right it's this whole
28:00idea of whatever statement you made to investigators about whether janet was sleeping when you left in
28:09bed when you left to go play soccer where she whether she's watching her her television show right i want
28:15to play something for you from some reporting on this if janet was the perfect victim who was raven he's a
28:23predator in his interview with police raven said janet was in bed watching tv and about to go to sleep
28:30when he left her to go play soccer she was not in that bed sleeping when he left she was dead
28:38the statement that you gave investigators
28:42was what let's be clear here first of all there would be no denying what i said no argument no
28:52interpretation if they had just recorded the conversation no video or audio exists of raven's
28:58interview on the night of janet's murder but police notes from that time clarify raven claimed janet was
29:05in bed watching tv and not in bed asleep that's the theory that you killed her before leaving that's
29:12the only thing that would explain why the contacts were still in her eyes if you're the murderer that you
29:20would have killed her before you left and before she went to sleep the clarification if they had recorded
29:28they would have better understood is i was leaving to a soccer game at 8 30. i wouldn't be home till 10 30.
29:34and so when i left my wife i would return to her being asleep okay thanks raven
29:44i'm going to do the test again one more time same questions but this time i want you to really focus
29:50on the key element of each question it's hard i know that's hard i know it's easy for me to to
29:56give you the instructions but you gotta you gotta execute that yeah okay i think you can do it okay
30:02all right let's try one more time that's going through a thing isn't it yeah you know what i'm
30:08going to try one more thing okay another technique and this is hopefully going to help you to focus
30:12on the test so i'm going to ask you the question and then you have to listen to the whole question
30:18because the instruction is to repeat the last word of the question and then answer all right okay so in
30:24other words if it was is today thursday the answer would be thursday yes if it's thursday
30:30gotcha okay did you rob the bank bank no raven wears his emotions on his sleeves he's a very emotional
30:37guy so there are some techniques that i'm employing to keep him focused and on track so that i can
30:42collect reliable data you have to hear the last word repeat it and then answer right away okay okay
30:48okay that will hopefully help you to focus on the question until you hear the whole thing and be in
30:54the moment okay okay so we'll do a repeat the last word test the test is about to begin please remain
31:03still this will be repeat the last word of every question is this the year 2025 yes you're gonna repeat
31:13the last word from here oh okay that was like repeating my head so my head would focus on okay
31:20all right let's try it again
31:27though doubt has been cast on raven's version of events raven's lawyer has always defended his innocence
31:32she says there was evidence that the durham police department overlooked when investigating janet's death
31:38i wanted to pull you aside as i i need a little more information about the defense strategy
31:45and how you you know work to poke holes in the prosecution theory of the case so essentially it
31:52boiled down to one of two possibilities either this was someone that janet knew yeah or it was a random
31:59break-in that went wrong okay i personally was leaning towards the break-in how did you build that
32:07theory out so it's important to understand that raven was asked this question you know he mentioned to
32:14them in his very first interview we had a couple of windows that would not lock that was one of the
32:21conversations that i had with mr avarola about a would-be intruder and there was some examination done
32:28to the calls in the area the police decided as part of their case that it couldn't be random couldn't
32:34have been a break-in it was a safe neighborhood there'd only been one thing that happened nearby
32:39and that's just not true there had been about 16 incidents since march 14th this happened on april 26th
32:46so within a month six weeks or so there had been several within like a two block radius
32:51and that list with the addresses and the type of crime was provided to the police from one of those
32:56officers who had done that work what was on that list what kind of crimes let's take a look i
33:01actually made a google map of it and they're almost all property crimes so this right here is janet and
33:10raven's house right across the street you can see this pink icon that's a car that was broken into so
33:15straight across from them and then right next to that house this blue icon is also a burglary but you
33:22can just see that there's this pattern car broken into car broken into assault case burglary this was
33:28not a safe area despite what people said there there was drug activity just across the street there was
33:34dealing going on and yet they were saying immediately this couldn't have been a burglary gone wrong
33:40not possible did you get to argue this map in court yes yes the jury saw it i think it's probably a big
33:46part of why there ended up being a hung jury i think that it created enough doubt plus we had
33:52four points of direct evidence that were unaccounted for that did not match raven give me those points
33:57so the first one is that there was a fingerprint in the room where janet was found and that print
34:04number 22 was never matched to anyone including raven the other pieces of direct evidence are there
34:10was a bloody shoe print next to her body and they were never able to account for who it could have been
34:15number three is there was a smear of her blood on a door that blood was mixed with a partial dna
34:22profile of an unknown person the fourth one is interesting so i mentioned there had been a break
34:29in across the street some coins had been taken out of a car and some coins were found on the ground
34:34and between that house and raven and janet's house there was one particular that the dogs alerted to when
34:41they were tracking her blood scent and they never thought to test it how do you explain that what
34:46explains that tunnel vision by the police they're so focused on the narrative they want to tell because
34:51they have this gut feeling raven's guilty it was the husband perhaps because of his previous trauma
34:59surrounding his wife's murder raven is showing high levels of anxiety making it difficult to get a clear
35:05reading it's proving to be a challenge the test is about to begin please remain still
35:12regarding the stabbing of your wife do you intend to lie during this test test no
35:20are you the person who stabbed your wife
35:24wife no
35:28this part of the test is over please remain still
35:30okay raven go ahead and recover please as you can move how did that feel i don't know it seemed
35:40weird i think i have enough data so i'm going to be able to evaluate this and get back to you with
35:46a result i don't know how you felt right i felt the weight of that oh yeah i'm hoping for the best
35:52you for everyone thank you see my dad struggle with all of this stuff it really hurts me when i was uh
36:00around seven or eight they were coming to the decision on whether or not to make a plea deal my
36:08grandma said we have the choice to take this deal and unfortunately means you're still not gonna see him
36:15for another three years but he will be back home at the end of those three years or you know we can
36:23keep fighting and you may never see your dad again hearing that uh that he'd come home no matter what
36:31even if i had to wait a little bit longer i do that like okay yeah that's that's that's gonna be the
36:36deal that was the only thing i wanted in life was to just be able to see him again i should have never
36:41done that she kidding i'm sorry i know i smell like it's a dumb decision you're gonna say yes to
36:49me taking a plea because you just wanted to see me i'm sorry buddy i know but this is too heavy man
37:04raven kaden this is the moment we've been building toward and all the time that we've
37:11spent together i've enjoyed meeting both of you and talking to you i know the subject matter has
37:16been very difficult but i do appreciate what i have felt to be the candor and open emotions from
37:25both of you and so thank you for sharing but this is the moment once again raven tell me why you
37:33made this decision we've talked about how difficult a decision it was to agree to sit for this
37:37why there's nothing out there for me to be able to address my innocence and to address the hardships
37:47that i had to face because people don't understand what it's like to be accused of something and to
37:52be put in prison for something you didn't do i've been met with a lot of hate i've had problems with
37:58employment being accepted by co-workers friends and things like that and so i just wanted to to be
38:03able to set that record straight and especially most importantly i want to do that for my son
38:08because i wanted to have him see that we can fight we need to stand up for what we believe in
38:13and that i can't hide under a rock for the rest of my life i have no doubt in my mind that this man is
38:20innocent thank you hello how are you how are you good to see you again good to see you good to meet you
38:36george there you go okay i have the results of your polygraph examination
38:41so the data was collected and it was analyzed three different ways i did my own objective evaluation
38:51then i ran all the information through a computer algorithm for quality assurance and finally i sent
38:58all the data to another retired fbi polygraph examiner for a second opinion all three independent
39:05results were the same we did get conclusive results okay so this exam had to do with the murder of your
39:12wife janet in 2005 raven i asked you the following question on the exam are you the person who stabbed
39:22your wife you answered no and again i asked you that question multiple times throughout the examination
39:28the results are you passed this exam with no deception indicated to the relevant question
39:39in my professional opinion truth is on your side those are the words the truth is on your side
39:49he is to be believed i think he deserves to be believed to hear that from someone in law enforcement
39:57actually means a lot to me i mean i knew i was innocent but i'm i'm grateful to do this
40:04and i always believed that the truth would set me free and to hear him say that i should be trusted
40:12it means a lot okay what's your reaction to the results i mean you know it's what i expected to hear
40:20obviously but it it feels good it feels good coming from george you know especially to hear
40:26him say that you know my dad deserves to be trusted that that means a lot because he does
40:34he absolutely deserves to be trusted and i'm i'm glad that that's what we got today
40:44raven's been through a lot so there's a lot of things there that raven brought to the table that we
40:50had to methodically work around and get to the point where he could focus on test questions and basic truth
40:56and i'm confident with the result i'm really really hopeful that people will change their minds about
41:04him and about the case and if they put the amount of energy into finding the actual killer that they've
41:09put into him all these years maybe there's hope for more information to come out and i think that's
41:15the biggest injustice of all of this is that we'll never know i think that it's going to be a huge
41:22weight off of my dad's shoulders for sure you know it's something he's been carrying around with him
41:26for a while and he deserves to you know be able to put that up get it off of his shoulders and to
41:33finally relax and enjoy his life again what i hope is that this anxiety that i feel will somehow be
41:42dissipated by this that i can maybe he'll hold my head a little higher stepping into this thing i haven't
41:47done before and being okay with with taking that that risk and i hope that's an example to him
41:54that we can fight that we can stay strong
