00:34he was a pioneer and there was no one like him
00:46he's got a mystery man and that's his life order
00:50colt was in a class of his own
00:53look at this he embodied professional wrestling the first superstar to transcend our sport
01:03there is no mount russell there's hogan he had some big missteps in his life
01:11oh it hurt it hurt let me tell you something
01:15a few months before he died he made his final appearance and he was booed
01:24i was hungry he deserved much more
01:27here comes the hulk
01:31i'm carrying the red white blue brother i'm proud of america i stand for this country
01:36i'm carrying the red white blue brother i'm proud of america i stand for this country
02:01you knew hulk hogan probably better than just about anybody what went through your head
02:17when you heard that he had died shock we just don't think about someone a family member or someone
02:26that close to you you don't think about them passing away
02:28and ultimania will live forever
02:32terry had kicked out so to speak of so many surgeries
02:36i think he had like 20 surgeries on his back plus others on his knees and hip or something
02:41and he you know he overcame all of that
02:45it was a tremendous shock it was a blow to my heart
02:49we had some inklings of health issues throughout the years but nothing can prepare you for news like that
02:57nothing it was debilitating
03:00please help us honor him now
03:05as we give a ten bell salute to terry belaya
03:11the one and the only
03:15the immortal
03:17hulk hogan
03:19i really miss him i mean if i dwell on it harvey i can get really really sad really sad
03:42i was devastated i had to pull the car over when i heard it he was having some pretty big health
03:49struggles the last few months of his life what kind of a toll did that take on him
03:54well it took a big toll it was hard for him to get going you know he had a cane he'd walk on and
03:59when we got in front of the public he'd put his hand on my shoulder or we could walk him out to do
04:03the autographs but he was a trooper he wouldn't let anybody know that he was really not feeling that
04:08well and it's just it's just devastating you know for this to happen but we tried to camouflage it as
04:14much as possible one of the things that struck me he died of a very ordinary thing a heart attack
04:21it kind of puts in rack focus that this wasn't this incredible hero or larger than life character
04:30this was a man he threw himself into his profession with such reckless abandon
04:36he sacrificed for his audience and that means he defied his health he went against logic he knew he
04:55was abusing his body beating up i know because i saw him through all the operations and i saw the
05:01the lifts and the hips and the elbows it was not just the heart it was the accumulation
05:06of everything that just wore him down wrestling legend hulk hogan has sadly passed away at the age
05:14of 71 hulk hogan wasn't just a wrestler he was the wrestler hulk made us feel strong when we were just
05:21small he made us believe that the good guy still could win harvey i'm really touched by all the people
05:31who are coming out with uh fond memories and uh recollections of hulk but i have to tell you i'm
05:37really disappointed in that small percentage of people who feel like it's okay to lash out at someone
05:43and their loved ones this wasn't just a man with old school values this was a racist so no i'm not
05:50mourning the death of hulk hogan hogan is dead and i better not see no black people on here mourning him
05:57it's not unique to hulk i think it's part of our culture now i don't think we realize when i say
06:02we collectively everybody who's on social media realize that what they write hurts it's weighing
06:07me down it hurts me so i can only imagine how it makes his family feel nobody's perfect by any stretch
06:14of imagination but the positive traits that i learned from terry will live with me forever
06:20there is not a human being on the planet that's made a bigger indentation in their chosen profession
06:28than terry belaya did as hulk hogan
06:31there are a lot of guys in wrestling who are big and muscular and charismatic yet hulk stood out
06:55above them why he's just one of a kind i knew what america wanted
07:01his voice his size his gestures he just was entertainment
07:14nobody put more s's in seats than hulk hogan
07:35hulk was a larger than life personality
07:41people just loved him and gravitated towards him
07:48he's the reason why we're all here today i mean man say your prayers take your vitamins
07:55i mean when hogan was in the ring he brought so much energy and so much charisma
07:59hulk hogan was the babe ruth he transcended the industry
08:04i hosted wrestlemania and introduced hulk hogan we were walking through what we were going to do
08:10he's like all right i'm going to hit this flex then this pose and then this pose but then as soon
08:15as we got out there he was hitting completely different poses and i was like oh he's in the moment
08:20what i see out here are 80 000 screaming hulkan maniacs
08:26hogan came along in the perfect time he was taylor made for wrestling
08:36i was wrestling as terry boulder through some local stuff in alabama and georgia
08:42that is it
08:44they had a guy named lou ferrigna on a talk show because the incredible hulk just came out and i was
08:48on the same show with the same host and she says oh my gosh you're bigger than the hulk is so when
08:54i went back to the dressing room the promoter goes your new name is terry the hulk boulder
08:58and then vince mcmahon senior called me he brought me to new york he says your new name is going to be
09:02hulk hogan making his first appearance ladies and gentlemen hulk hogan
09:09he was the face of wrestling when wrestling changed hulk realized through his travels that it was the
09:21connection with the audience that was most important more important than the moves and he's giving these
09:27exactly what they want his voice his size his gestures he just was entertainment
09:34what a show off what a show off you went to see him cutting his ear you went to see him tearing the t-shirt
09:41you went to see the bad guys pound on him and pound on him and him getting up no impact at all
09:45pointing the finger at him they knew the entire match before it started but they just wanted to enjoy
09:50that match and see it live an awesome figure at 7 foot 5 frame of andre the giant i've been a wrestling fan
10:00for many decades and if i had to pick one moment that may be the biggest single moment it had to be
10:09for me wrestlemania 3 the irresistible force meeting the impossible object look at the size of the giant
10:16it wasn't just a match it was one of those iconic moments through three of hogan said thanks boss
10:23and uh
10:24and um
10:27that moment changed my whole career because hulk hogan was off and running hulk amania was off
10:36running that put me on a rocket ship it was a moment that kind of registered on a seismograph
10:42it was so big it gave terry balea hulk hogan the ability to walk down the street in new york and have
10:48a 90 year old will be turned from the ultimate good guy to bad guy in 96 i never saw that come
10:56dressed differently came out with different music had different colors i thought i'd be the ultimate
11:00bad guy which i was i became hollywood hogan that bad guy in the in the back with a black beard
11:06but this you go like i was you know look at all the merchandise well people stop buying the
11:10merchandise well actually you know they end up selling more merchandise
11:13and uh it was funny because going into the match you know the hulkster was quote what we call the
11:21heel the bad guy and rock was the baby face and something extraordinary to watch you came right
11:28out of your seat it was so much it was a partner there was no one like you
11:33when i first saw him i said there's certain people that have a light there's a glow they just
11:45have it the rock would not have that diving board to jump off of by any stretch of imagination
11:52to become the successful hollywood superstar that he has become without hogan busting the door down
11:59i'm coming after you let's call it off oh come on it's for charity what was he like behind the
12:11scenes when you were filming rocky he was so i mean i can get moody he never got moody he was always
12:21self-deprecating loud welcoming when i first saw him i said there's certain people
12:28barbie that have a a light i'd seen rocky one and rocky two i had already wrestled under the name
12:35hulk hogan right from like 78 till 80 with vince mcmahon senior in the old wwf and then when i went
12:42off to do the movie i got fired vince mcmahon senior fired me because i went to do the movie because back
12:48in the day the barbaric thinking was wrestlers don't do movies they don't do commercials or tv
12:52appearance the one the only thunder when he was playing the character of thunder lips he hadn't
12:59quite got his his act together he hadn't gotten his voice as an actor of course a superstar in wrestling
13:06after the match how about uh we get a ball right together and then when we started to wrestle because
13:13we had to do a couple weeks of him basically throwing me around
13:17i don't think i was ever injured which is amazing because when people say oh wrestling's not real
13:25gravity is real
13:27you have a guy 300 pounds landing on you but he's breaking the floor so he's actually hurting himself
13:36to protect you and that's what a lot of people don't see and they realize he was so incredibly
13:42concerned about my welfare and not his own
13:46how important was rocky 3 for your industry and for him i think it was incredible for pro wrestling
13:59it was really impressive for him i think that movie made like 160 million dollars there was nobody that
14:07didn't see rocky i don't know anybody that i mean do you know anybody that didn't see rocky
14:12absolutely no one good match hey why'd you get so crazy on me out there that's the name of the game
14:19he set the pace and he showed people the opportunity that they could have and that was part of terry
14:25but later everyone like hey guys let me show you how it's done
14:28we did thunder in paradise the tv show that we did of course the movies mr nanny and suburban commando
14:42and it just opened the door for a lot of people to start going you know these wrestlers are pretty
14:45successful mtv you know was big thing we got on saturday night live got on the cover of sports
14:50all those things that today might not mean a lot but back then in 1984 they were great building
14:55blocks because wrestlers never got those opportunities before him the saturday morning
14:59cartoon man rocking wrestling every kid that i knew watched the cartoon
15:06how much credit does he get for opening the door to people like john cena like the rock
15:16like you people who are able to turn your profession into something even bigger the rock would not have
15:27that diving board to jump off of by any stretch of imagination to become the successful hollywood
15:33superstar that he has become the eternal good guy i look at you and you're a movie star you're a writer
15:39you're a television star you've done multiple things successfully and there are very few people
15:45i think who do that and he did as well it's really special because at first you wonder
15:53oh can i really do this and you have to be willing to not care if you fail
16:01he was basically fearless in that way
16:06he wasn't just a wrestler he was going to become a symbol for all the world of wwe and wrestling
16:16he was going to become an icon a role model for young children he just knew he was destined for bigger
16:24things and he had the guts and the fortitude to go after that and he changed that world forever
16:32there'll never be another guy like him hulk was in a class of his own
16:38i remember when hulk and i would have to do the maker wishes show you what a big softer he was we'd go
16:50out with the maker wishes when they set them up holy moly macaroni unbelievable he'd get on his
16:56hands and knees with the little guys or girls and then when we go in the back he'd cry like a baby
17:00back there and it just tore him apart
17:02what was he like behind closed doors my friend my best friend really down to earth you know
17:20came from augusta georgia you know the old south i came from memphis tennessee you know we're all
17:25southern boys so we really got along great and and it was just something special well he was a part
17:30of my life a big part of my life we were brothers to a certain extent every now and then we'd get into
17:34a little verbal scrap or something but it always turned out for the best we were just so close
17:40and enjoyed each other's company so much he was a family man he was a father he was a husband
17:47he'd like to go in the water he liked to go to the bars and hang out and he liked to be there
17:52with the people he was a people person
17:54next to mickey mouse hogan is the most requested celebrity by make-a-wish children take it easy
18:06i remember when hulk and i would have to do the maker wishes show you what a big softer he was we'd go
18:12out with the maker wishes when they set them up and he'd sit he'd get on his hands and knees with
18:16with the with the little guys or girls and he'd rub their arms and go you know i've got to fight
18:21that big old bad guy tonight and i need some energy you know i need some of your strength he would do
18:27that and then when we go in the back he'd cry like a baby back there because he'd say you know
18:31jimmy when we come back a year from now they might not even be here anymore and it just tore him apart
18:36let me see how strong that was holy moly macaroni unbelievable dude
18:43when i think of terry i just think of the guy that was the first man
18:49to show up at the hospital for my dad when he got sick
18:52can i tell you a story about hulk and i and the um issue we had he said something on a national
19:01canadian sports show you know i went ahead while mc foley was sleeping and eating cheeseburgers and
19:06m m's i was in the gym working out i work out two hours a day i've been doing it for 30 years
19:10and it did sting because he's hulk hogan like you want to earn the approval and acceptance of the people
19:18who paved the way for you but the truth is over the course of years i considered it water under the
19:25bridge but hulk went out of his way and he made sure he said it on camera i want to apologize because
19:31that was one of the worst things and it's not true i think so it was just me being stupid i mean really
19:37and that may have been the last interaction i had with him yes sir we love you hulk the last time i
19:45spoke with him my daughters were walking past some area where for some reason he's in a booth
19:51and he calls them over even though he has people coming around him he goes oh wait a minute those
19:58are the stone girls get over here get over and i just happened to call at that time and my daughter
20:06goes oh my god do you know who i'm with and then oh my god hey brother what about me with your beautiful
20:13sister so he never lost a beat is what i'm saying even though i know he was in dire pain
20:21he still had time for my daughter the older you get the more you realize that you're you're not
20:27invincible and when your friends start dying off then you realize it even more and terry to me was
20:35not only a friend but he was he was like an older brother so for that i'm forever grateful
20:42he had some big missteps in his life notably the sex tape with some racist comments it was
20:54unforgivable and i was like i guess what happened and um when those things occurred that's not like him
21:03what in god's name is going on
21:05hulk holgan got a smackdown from world wrestling entertainment firing the wwe star after he was heard
21:19repeating the n-word in a racist rant you can't talk about somebody's life by just looking at it in a
21:27one-dimensional way and he was an amazingly successful guy but there were conflicts i didn't
21:34find out about him having the sex tape until it became national news it's hard to believe that i was
21:40actually married to this man that i had children with that i lived with him and i had to look at him
21:45and he's doing this kind of stuff behind my bath i gave him everything that i had
21:51his son behind bars for a car crash
21:54a friend brain damaged as a result for life well let's start with the funeral so you chose
22:04uh not to go and i know you really haven't had contact with your dad in the last two years of
22:11his life my dad and i have been through a lot of stuff over the years if you want to give it a quick
22:15google anybody can find out the hurt that has happened to me throughout the years
22:21he had some big missteps in his life notably the sex tape talking about not wanting to have
22:33his daughter date black men hogan is heard on the tape saying i'd rather if she was going to
22:39some i'd rather have her marry an eight foot tall worth a hundred million dollars like a basketball
22:46player he had made some racist comments on a call to nick in jail
22:52phone dialogue
22:53it was unforgivable
23:00and i was like i guess what happened
23:05and uh when those things occurred that's not like him
23:11what in god's name is going on on the sex tape he actually said he was racist he said in his words
23:19that he was a racist so why would i sit here and try to defend somebody that tells you who they were
23:25how did it affect you personally i mean you knew it hurt it hurt
23:32man i just grew up watching the dude man i used to love that dude i wanted to be like him
23:45it hurts it was probably the worst day of my life
23:50when i said that eight years ago it was a glitch it was a huge mistake the worst thing i've ever said
23:56i told him then and i told vincent man i was like look if y'all want this to go away
24:01i know how to fix it and we should do a black college tour at morehouse and prairie view and
24:09hit the circuit and go and talk to them and be honest with your apology
24:14and he was like well i've been advised not to talk about it no more
24:18and i said i think that's bad advice
24:22you're clearly disappointed
24:24not just in what he said
24:27but in the way he handled it afterward
24:29yeah most definitely
24:31quick photo
24:32oh yeah sure man
24:34i did a show with him
24:36in 2017
24:37where we went through his life story
24:39and he insisted he said he was not a racist
24:43i'm not that guy i have to be able to look at myself in the mirror every day
24:47i have to be accountable i have to be able to live with myself
24:50it really slapped me and woke me up
24:51and it made me realize how powerful words are
24:54for the people that know me
24:55and love me they know who i am
24:57you know they know i'm not a racist
24:59as soon as that happened
25:00obviously the company didn't have anything to do with him anymore
25:03we even took him out of the hall of fame
25:05you just don't do those things
25:07everybody that knows me knows i'm not a racist
25:09even the wwe knows i'm not a racist
25:12they had to do what was best for business
25:14for their company
25:16he was devastated
25:19i mean devastated
25:20because and i'll be honest with you
25:22the whole time we were together
25:24he's never done racist stuff whatsoever
25:26so that was just kind of like wow
25:27and of course at that time
25:29hope was that
25:30not that there's an excuse for it
25:32hope was that a very low part of his life
25:34you know linda was leaving him
25:35he was getting a divorce
25:37he had been drinking pretty heavily on that
25:39and sometimes when things happen
25:42when you're at a low point of your life
25:43you say stuff that you might not say on anything else
25:45and let me tell you something too
25:47this is why i don't even really believe he said it
25:49until i heard it
25:50because i've never heard it before
25:51kamala was one of our wrestlers back in the day
25:54and kamala one day was sitting in the dressing room with us
25:57and he just got his check sent to him on the road
25:59you know what he made that week
26:00fighting with hulk
26:01and hulk said let me see that check
26:02what did you get
26:03he showed him
26:04and he goes
26:05oh man
26:05you gotta make more than that
26:07so right away
26:07hulk picked the phone up
26:08and called vince
26:09and he said vince
26:10come on only got this
26:11he's working with me every night
26:12we're selling out houses
26:14boy vince took care of that right away
26:16the next week he got his check
26:17and he goes
26:17woo it's double what it was
26:19thank you hulkster
26:20so that's why it was such a shock to me
26:21and that's why i was devastated when i heard it
26:23so
26:25you cut ties with him
26:27over the racist comments
26:29but ultimately brought him back
26:31i knew he wasn't a racist
26:33i've been with him for so many years
26:35he wasn't racist
26:36he said some racist things
26:37and
26:38he should pay for that
26:40and he did
26:40but in the end
26:42i think that everyone saw
26:43the real
26:44hulk over and terry vallea
26:46and they felt
26:47and wait a minute
26:48this guy
26:49he doesn't
26:50act like a racist
26:51he's not a racist
26:53we all make mistakes
26:55that was a big one
26:55but
26:56he wasn't a racist
26:58well let me tell you something brother
27:08when they tried to kill
27:10the next president of the united states
27:13enough was enough
27:17and i said let trump mania run wild brother
27:22he didn't separate his politics from wrestling
27:27he became the star of the rnc
27:30and
27:31this is a very divisive country
27:33i didn't come here as hulk hogan
27:36but i just had to give you a little taste
27:38when you saw him on that stage
27:43all in for donald trump
27:44and you heard the crowd
27:46roar
27:47what was your reaction to that
27:49i saw a man being embraced by people
27:52and eating it up
27:54like man somebody loves me
27:56somebody still cares about me
27:58tonight is about honor
28:06it is about prestige
28:07holy hell
28:11a couple months before he died
28:18he had his final
28:20entrance into the ring
28:22and he was booed
28:23we walked into a
28:28oh my gosh
28:29we walked into a firestorm
28:30but boy california
28:32didn't have any bit of it that night
28:33well let me tell you something
28:35brother
28:36and so the more boos we got
28:40the more i kept waving that flag
28:42was that
28:42kind of a body blow to him
28:44emotionally
28:45yes
28:46just devastating
28:47i think that hurt him immensely that night
28:51because that was his base
28:53those were his fans
28:55that was his home
28:56i'm sure it hurt him to the core
28:58it really did
28:59i was appalled by it
29:01for someone who had
29:03wwe in their blood as you did
29:06i'm just wondering how you reacted to that
29:08well
29:08it wasn't set up properly
29:10i'm sure he was
29:11probably despondent after that
29:14how do you feel when you heard that
29:17i was angry
29:18because
29:21you know we've
29:22known each other for a lifetime
29:24professionally and personally
29:26and
29:27setting up so to speak
29:29this margin life superhero
29:31and you don't just let him walk out there
29:34he deserves something
29:35very very special
29:37more than anyone
29:38who they owe him
29:40it was like okay
29:41and here comes hulk hogan
29:42i got angry because
29:44that's not the way
29:45that i would have done it
29:46and he deserved much more
29:48i don't think it's ever fair
29:56to judge anybody
29:57on their worst moment
29:58now of course
30:00the words he used
30:01were extremely harsh
30:02were definitely racist
30:04i don't think that's indicative
30:06of who he
30:07was
30:08and when i measure
30:09the good that hulk did
30:11against the hurt that he caused
30:13with that type of language
30:15he still made a huge impact
30:18on so many lives
30:19so
30:19i'm the guy that's saying
30:21i'm gonna go with the joy he brought
30:22superseding the pain that he caused
30:25he is wrestling
30:36he took it to a whole other level
30:38his legacy is the
30:40is the father figure of wrestling
30:42the one thing that he said
30:44which is
30:44that hulkamania
30:45would live forever
30:46and indeed
30:48it is
30:50all his legacy is
30:55you know
30:56it is
30:56simple
30:57really
30:57there's everyone
30:59any entertainer
31:00anyone in the sports world

31:03on a global
31:04basis
31:05people understanding
31:06that character
31:07what that character
31:08did for them
31:09generation after generation
31:11how you felt about him
31:12no one
31:14has ever been able
31:15to do that
31:16he
31:17is wrestling
31:19he took it
31:20to a whole other level
31:22his legacy
31:23begins and ends
31:24with
31:25you know
31:27the unfortunate language
31:28he used
31:29but i think for anyone else
31:31looking at it
31:31with a more open mind
31:32he changed the face
31:34of wrestling
31:35he brought it
31:36into the mainstream
31:37he
31:38made it
31:39acceptable
31:40for people
31:41to have
31:42larger than life
31:43characters
31:44when the wrestling world
31:45gave
31:46hulk
31:47the ten bell salute
31:49you had such

32:29he doesn't have to
32:30walk on the cane
32:30anymore
