00:08What is Islamic Sharia?
00:10Meaning of the word Sharia is a way.
00:13In Islamic terminology, Sharia means a legal system or the law of Islam.
00:19Sharia refers to the matters of religion that Allah has legislated for humans.
00:23Allah has sent messengers to people who guide them the right path, a path that lead them to happiness in this world and hereafter.
00:36Here are the two fundamentals of Islamic Sharia.
00:43Concept of Sharia according to the Quran.
00:46In chapter 5, verse 3 of Quran, Allah says,
00:49Today I have perfected your way of life for you and completed my favor upon you and have chosen Islam as your way of life.
01:14Limitations of Islamic Sharia
01:20The word Muslim means one who submits to Allah.
01:25Islam expects a Muslim to follow its laws in every aspect of life.
01:30The domain of Sharia includes following matters.
01:33Personal and familial.
01:35Religious, social, moral and political.
01:38And business and economics.
01:40As explained in chapter 33, verse 36 of Quran, where Allah says,
01:50In the name of his name, Allah says,
02:01In the name of his name, Allah says,
02:04It is not fitting for a believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and
02:23his messenger to have any option about their decision.
02:28If anyone disobeys Allah and his messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong path.

02:56Sources of Islamic Sharia
03:00The Islamic Sharia comprises of laws and these laws are abstracted from the following four
03:06resources. Number one, Quran, a book of Allah. Number two, Sunnah, the practices of the holy
03:15prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Number three, Ijma, the approval and agreed opinion of the Muslim
03:23jurists. Number four, Qiyas, the analogy from the Quran, Sunnah, and Ijma. Let us take a look at each of them.
03:38Quran, the first source of Sharia. Quran is the sacred book of Muslims and is the primary source
03:44of the Muslim laws. Quran is a complete code of conduct itself. It tells us what Allah wants us to do,
03:51from birth to death. However, when it does not speak directly on a certain subject, Muslims only then
03:58turn to alternative sources. Sunnah, the second source of Sharia. The word Sunnah means a system, a path,
04:11or an example. In Islam, it refers to the practices of the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and his
04:18life examples. Sunnah are the things that, prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, did, or agreed to.
04:27Sunnah clarifies details of what is stated generally in the Quran. So it is part of every Muslim's faith
04:33that Sunnah is the third source of Sharia. It may be defined as consensus of opinion of the companions
04:51of the holy prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, or Muslim jurists of the first three centuries of the
04:58Hijra. Ijma is simply an agreed-upon decision. It used in an Islamic society to overcome a problem,
05:05which could not be found in Quran or in Sunnah.
05:14Ijma may be understood from the following hadith of prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who said,
05:22If anything comes to you for decision, according to the book of Allah, if anything comes to you,
05:28which is not in the book of Allah, then look to the Sunnah of the prophet, peace be upon him.
05:34If anything comes to you, which is not in the Sunnah of prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,
05:39then look to what people unanimously agrees upon.
05:42Qiyas, the fourth and last source of Sharia. Qiyas means judging by comparing with a something.
05:55It may be defined as the analogy from the Quran, the Sunnah, and Ijma. Qiyas can be carried out only in
06:03a Sharia-governed state when a solution to a problem cannot be found in Quran, Sunnah, and Ijma.
06:11Qiyas, the fourth and last source of Sharia.
06:17When something needs a legal ruling, but has not been clearly addressed in the other sources,
06:23Islamic jurists may use analogy, reasoning, and legal precedent to decide new case law.
06:35Qiyas may be understood from the following hadith of prophet Muhammad,
06:41Peace be upon him, who said, Judge upon the book of Allah, upon the Sunnah of the prophet,
06:48and if you do not find it in that, then use your personal opinion.
06:55Why Sharia is important. Muslims believe that. The purpose of their creation is nothing but servitude,
07:03which is being a servant to Allah. Without the guidance of Allah, no one can meet this purpose.
07:09Fulfillment of the servitude mission is following the guidance of Allah, which is Sharia.
07:15Sharia is a path set by Allah for those who accept Him in order to attain success both in the worldly life
07:22and in the hereafter.
