India is on a bold journey to cleaner energy ethanol and natural gas are leading the charge as the nation’s bridge fuels from fossil fuels to a renewable future. In this video, we break down how these fuels are transforming India’s mobility and energy landscape in 2025.
Ethanol: India is rapidly approaching its E20 (20% ethanol blending in petrol) target, with blending rates reaching nearly 20% this year. This move is saving billions in oil imports, reducing CO₂ emissions by millions of tonnes, and boosting rural economies by creating demand for sugarcane and maize. Already, the program has saved over ₹1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange a decade and replaced 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil while cutting emissions equivalent to planting 30 crore trees. The government is now eyeing higher blends like E30 by 2030 and exploring flex fuel vehicles for even greater impact.
Natural Gas: Natural gas CNG for vehicles, piped gas for homes, and fuel for industries is India’s other clean bridge. Its use is set to more than double by 2040, with city gas distribution becoming the largest demand driver. By 2030, natural gas could make up 15% of India’s energy mix (up from 7% today), helping the country transition smoothly towards its Net Zero by 2070 goal. Gas is cleaner than petrol and diesel, reduces urban pollution, and supports industries and households with reliable, affordable energy.

00:00Hi guys and welcome to DriveSpark and in today's video we are going to talk about the ethanol blending scenario in the Indian market for petrol.
00:08Now India's path to net zero 2070 is practical and people's first.
00:13Powered by biofuel and natural gas are bridge fuels that cut emission without disrupting everyday life.
00:19Now the solutions align with national commitments while strengthening energy security and the rural economy.
00:25Now why is ethanol important and why does it matter?
00:29Independent assignments show that the significant life cycle emission cuts.
00:37Now the sugarcane based ethanol can lower greenhouse gases by about 65% whereas petrol and maize based ethanol by around 50%.
00:46Meaning cleaner mobility without replacing the existing vehicle fleet.
00:50Now this scalable near term decarbonization level built on domestic feedstock and existing infrastructure.
00:56Now what is the impact on farmers and the economy?
01:00The ethanol blending program has transformed rural cash flows, clearing cane areas, improving maize viability and channelizing payment directly to farmers.
01:10Over the last decade blending has saved sustainable foreign exchange and substituted large volumes of crude oil and also avoided major CO2 emissions.
01:19Now all of this combined is equivalent to planting around 100 million trees at once.
01:25At 20% blending, farmer payouts and forex savings this year alone are expected to be a very sizable amount.
01:33Now what is the performance and mileage of the vehicles with this fuel?
01:37Now concerns about mileage and reliability were anticipated and technically addressed through a cross-agency studies.
01:43Now E20 offers better acceleration and ride quality driven by ethanol's higher octane and cooling effects that aids modern high compression engines.
01:52Now regular petrol that is now 91 RON under BS6 norms and with the E20 fuel, the effective octane moves nearly to RON 95, that is 95 RON of fuel.
02:05Improving anti-knock performance.
02:07So basically you will have a very smooth acceleration in your vehicle.
02:10Now any fuel efficiency drop in the older E10 calibrated vehicles is typically marginal and often overshadowed by the real world scenarios like driving style, tire pressure, maintenance and air conditioning load.
02:23Now the recent models have been E20 compliant for years now, where efficiency loses don't really matter a lot.
02:30Standard based safeguards are in place.
02:33E20 specifications are defined through Indian standards for drivability, material and safety.
02:39Older vehicles may need an earlier replacement of certain rubber parts or gaskets, a simple low cost and a one-time service routine maintenance.
02:48Now using E20 does not invalidate motor insurance.
02:52Coverage remains valid and the same.
02:55Now what about the price, reality and policy roadmap?
02:58While E20 was cheaper than petrol in 2020 and 2021, costs have since increased.
03:04Even so, blending continues because it boosts energy security in farmers' income and environmental sustainability.
03:12What about the global proof and Indian pace?
03:15Now global experience like Brazil's long-running E27 shows that ethanol blend works at a scale where mainstream automakers reinforcing India's calibrated approach.
03:25Now this is a steady data-led transition tailored to Indian's climate, crops and vehicle base.
03:32Now biofuel and natural gas are helping Indian cut emission, save forex, reward farmers and enhance engine performance without imposing abrupt changes on consumers.
03:43This is a bridge to a cleaner tomorrow, measured, standard-driven and built for Indian road, farmer and future.
