Thousands of people evacuated in Taiwan as Typhoon Podul makes landfall

More than 5,500 people had been evacuated in advance of the typhoon’s arrival on Wednesday, according to authorities.

00:00Typhoon Podil reached eastern Taiwan on Wednesday, bringing powerful winds and torrential rain to large parts of the island, local authorities said.
00:10Emergency officials in the Uoling and Taitonk counties on the eastern coast said they evacuated residents as intensified winds and rainfall on Wednesday morning swept across the region.
00:23The Ministry of National Defense dispatched troops to Uoling to assist in evacuations, moving residents to emergency shelters as flooding risks rose.
00:34According to the Central Weather Administration, Podil Skirt measured 120 kilometers and was expected to broaden even while losing strength as the storm moved westward across the Taiwan Strait.
00:48Taiwan's government said that more than 5,500 people had been evacuated in advance of the typhoon's arrival.
00:56Taiwan is accustomed to frequent tropical storms from July to October, with Typhoon Podil being its 11th typhoon this year.
