00:00Certainly, Germany look a little late on parade,
00:02but it's all about how well they've judged that timing.
00:04Now, Germany spin the boat at the bottom of the line.
00:07USA towards the top of the line.
00:08Australia, France and Spain look late.
00:11We're looking for this line to turn white,
00:13and we're going to be go in Sydney for race four on Sunday.
00:17How's your timing at the top of the line?
00:19Great start by the USA, but it's Switzerland and Germany again
00:23with a fantastic start.
00:24Three in a row for Eric Heil off the bottom of the line,
00:27and it's a drag race to mark one.
00:30Coming up to mark number one of race number four here on Sunday,
00:33Germany on the inside line,
00:35but look at the speed that Switzerland has.
00:38An aggressive move by New Zealand,
00:40forcing everyone wide, secure third place.
00:42Fantastic from Eric Heil,
00:44and this boundary comes real fast coming in here.
00:47It's super close to the fleet as we see New Zealand first to turn away,
00:51Germany in control of Switzerland,
00:53and it's all about accuracy and manoeuvres
00:55as the boats head off downwind.
00:56But look at this, USA are pushed wide,
00:59and Australia are back in last place at the moment.
01:02No good for the hometown heroes right now.
01:07Remember coming into today,
01:08it was Denmark and Australia tied on points.
01:10You need to be in the top three to get to that final.
01:13Front three boats all doing over 60 kilometres an hour
01:16as they approach gate two.
01:18This is where we're going to learn a lot about the course, Todd.
01:20Of course, Shark Island yesterday was a real problem.
01:23Genesis Island is rebranded for this event,
01:25and that's off the top left of our screen.
01:27It's all about who could make the gain with minimum manoeuvres.
01:30It looks like Germany is going to be able to turn left very easily,
01:33Switzerland turn right.
01:34who is going to be the first boat to make the overtakes here
01:38as we see New Zealand coming in third.
01:40But which way is going to favor?
01:41Will Switzerland gain sailing away from the wind shadow of Genesis Island,
01:46or will Germany gain by minimizing manoeuvres heading that way?
01:49It's going to be interesting.
01:50We're going to learn a lot about the course
01:51in the next 60 or 90 seconds.
01:59Elevated heart rates here on the first race.
02:01We've got one more fleet race coming up after this one,
02:03and then the fleet is cut to only the top three.
02:06Already we're seeing slightly less pressure on the right-hand side,
02:10top of the screen, where Germany are.
02:11They're down an 18 to 20 kilometres an hour pressure,
02:14while Switzerland have had up to 23 at the bottom of the screen.
02:17But it's tight.
02:18Germany has the right-of-way.
02:19Switzerland need to be assured they're ahead.
02:21New Zealand are getting sucked back into the pack here.
02:24Outridge had to dip away, but it's Germany.
02:26Well, it's all pretty even.
02:27Not a lot in that at the bottom of the course there.
02:29Switzerland are out in front.
02:31What a great moment for this Swiss crew to be leading away,
02:34and they've now got control of the race course,
02:37and they again look to turn the boat.
02:39None of the fleet want to seem to get stuck
02:41in what I imagine is the wind shadow of Genesis Island.
02:44It's great to have all the fans there,
02:46but it's not helping the wind for the fleet.
02:48As we see, look at the fleet,
02:49congested on this boundary.
02:51They're over here looking for more wind.
02:53As we see a close moment with Great Britain and Canada.
02:56That looked like Canada pushed that a bit tight to me.
02:58Stand by.
03:00So a time to shine as you see the ride heights on the left-hand side.
03:04That's all about foiling.
03:05How high out of the water, Stevie?
03:06As we know, the higher you fly, the more unstable the boat is.
03:09Well, it's more unstable, Todd, the higher you fly it out of the water,
03:12but there's less boat, there's less foil in the water, there's less drag.
03:15If you minimise drag, you're going to go faster.
03:18So, yeah, you're racing on the edge,
03:19but you've got to be going a little bit quicker.
03:21So the optimum number we're looking for there is around one metre.
03:25So it's on the limit, but it's quick.
03:29Tight moment there.
03:30Germany had to keep clear of Switzerland,
03:32but right now Germany are going to be sailing a faster mode.
03:35Switzerland are going to be struggling,
03:37potentially getting into the dirty wind of Germany,
03:39and the right-of-way is now with Germany.
03:42Germany can turn whenever they want to,
03:44and Switzerland will need to keep clear.
03:46that it's really tight in the pack out here today.
03:49So the disturbed air coming off of Germany,
03:51slowing down Switzerland,
03:52and off the right-hand side,
03:53there you see Emirates GBR.
03:54They need a big performance here,
03:55although they're probably not going to make the top three.
03:58No, we have to do it.
03:59Okay, all good.
04:00A conversation about Switzerland.
04:01They're talking about when Germany manoeuvres,
04:03Germany will have the right-of-way.
04:06Switzerland will have to keep clear.
04:08Seb Schneider thinks he's going to go behind him.
04:10Here we go.
04:10Tight cross coming up.
04:11It's going to be real close.
04:13Switzerland spin the boat away from the wind,
04:15hoping to make the right turn.
04:17Germany's turning left,
04:18and I think that left turn
04:19probably is going to be favoured.
04:21Germany are sailing back towards more wind,
04:23and it's going to be a really tight upwind leg.
04:25Look at that.
04:26Nothing in it on that upwind leg.
04:28As New Zealand fight their way back to third,
04:30they look to turn left as well.
04:32Is it a perfect?
04:33Yes.
04:33First day above?
04:37And the race to the final is on.
04:40Currently, we're still seeing the same top three teams,
04:43Denmark, New Zealand, and Australia.
04:44France still have some work to do
04:46if they want to make it into that final.
04:48Oh, heartbreaker, France.
04:49Steve, this has got to be the third race in a row
04:51where they're going to maybe just miss out by mere points.
04:53Yeah, there are a few points back at the moment, Todd, for sure.
04:56It's been a bit of a tough break for them,
04:58but it's interesting how tight.
04:59The wind's a lot steadier today,
05:01and the fleet is so congested right now.
05:04It's really, really tight.
05:05When you're back in the pack,
05:07the wind's disturbed.
05:08Your tactical decision-making's really compromised.
05:10If you've got less wind,
05:12it's hard to go as fast out there as we see.
05:14It looks like a gain to Germany at the moment,
05:16but when they maneuver back towards Switzerland,
05:19it's going to be Switzerland with the right-of-way.
05:20A crucial moment for the German crew here.
05:24On leg four of seven, race number four,
05:26the first race of Sunday,
05:27we've reconnected with Lisa Darmena down on the water.
05:30Lisa, what are you seeing,
05:31and more importantly,
05:32what are you hearing as far as the forecast?
05:33Well, the forecast wasn't looking good,
05:38but I can tell you we've got more than we were promised,
05:41so I think all the sailors are pretty happy.
05:43We've got these 24-meter all-purpose wings
05:45and light air boards,
05:46so nice big foils for them
05:48to try and execute the foiling maneuvers.
05:50We don't know if it's going to increase or not.
05:51I'm definitely hopeful,
05:52but it is really gusty out here,
05:54and you've got to be careful
05:56not to get trapped under too many headlands
05:58and get in light breeze,
05:59but yeah, what a race course.
06:00It's going to be so tight out here,
06:02and I think it's anyone's game, really.
06:03At gate number four,
06:04it is Germany the first to make the turn.
06:07Switzerland sits in second,
06:08and New Zealand with Nathan Outeridge
06:10filling in for Pete Berling,
06:12currently in third,
06:13Denmark in fourth.
06:14Remember, they're tied on the overall right now,
06:16and then you have Emirates GBR
06:17and the Aussies in sixth.
06:19Really interesting,
06:20as we saw coming in there,
06:21New Zealand chose to go behind Switzerland,
06:23and a lot of the boats back in the fleet
06:25are trying to minimize
06:26the number of maneuvers they do.
06:28Every time you turn the boat,
06:29be it through the wind,
06:30up into the wind,
06:31whatever it is,
06:32you lose distance,
06:33so it's a guaranteed loss
06:35when you do that.
06:36And we've just seen Germany
06:37that drop off the foils
06:39in that maneuver.
06:40They're back up and foiling now,
06:41but that's crucial meters loss
06:43when they're trying to hold on to the lead.
06:45Steven, one thing I've noticed,
06:46I think, over this season especially,
06:47is there's a lot of teams
06:48that can get the lead.
06:49They can get the whole shot.
06:50They can get to mark one first
06:51and hold on.
06:52It's the teams that can maintain that
06:54and stay out in front,
06:55because then you see the guys
06:56like Tom Slingsby
06:57and Nikolaj Sestit
06:58and, you know,
06:59Pete Berling.
07:00They're going to come through
07:00and they'll find a way
07:01to get around you.
07:02Yeah, and it's just the accuracy
07:03of the maneuvers.
07:04We saw the United States,
07:05their new crew,
07:06they're learning on the job,
07:07but they fell off the foils.
07:08They're hemorrhaging a lot of meters,
07:10and when you're in the pack
07:11and you're compromised,
07:12it's hard to sail the boat
07:13as smoothly as this.
07:14Look how high the hull
07:15of that German boat's
07:16flying out the water.
07:18They're just doing a fantastic job,
07:19but that's because
07:20there's no one in their way.
07:21There's no one compromising
07:23what they do out there
07:24on the water,
07:25and that just means
07:26it's a lot easier.
07:27Once you're back in the pack,
07:28your decisions are affected,
07:29the way you sail the boat
07:30is compromised,
07:31and if you haven't got
07:32that experience,
07:33it's hard to be as smooth as that.
07:34Near-perfect act
07:35from Germany there.
07:36New crew,
07:36they've looked a bit messy yesterday,
07:38but put them out in front,
07:39they do a great job, Todd.
07:41Well, don't want to give
07:42the announcer jinx,
07:43but this would be
07:43the first win in SailGP history
07:46for the German team.
07:47Remember,
07:47this is their first season competing,
07:49so a huge victory
07:50on a very tricky course, Stevie.
07:52Remember,
07:52we've gone away
07:53from slight wins
07:54to very heavy wins.
07:56And just look at this
07:57performance by Germany.
07:58100% fly time,
07:59the only team
08:00to stay up on the foils
08:01for this entire race.
08:02So can they maintain it
08:03through all seven legs here
08:05of race number four?
08:06They've got a sizable lead
08:07of over 150 meters.
08:09Remember,
08:09another fleet race
08:10still to come
08:11with numbers being crunched,
08:12and right now,
08:13it looks like it could be
08:14Australia, New Zealand,
08:15and Denmark
08:15in the event final
08:16that blows things out here
08:17in Australia.
08:18but it's tight.
08:19And right now,
08:20the German crew are sailing
08:21a near faultless race.
08:22We said staying on the foils,
08:23that's great,
08:24but they've had three fantastic
08:25starts in a row,
08:26and this is a really
08:27solid performance.
08:28Again,
08:29setting up for the left turn,
08:30that's definitely a feature
08:31that we're seeing
08:32coming away.
08:33Top of our screen,
08:33that's a bay in there.
08:34There's less wind.
08:36And Germany,
08:36now,
08:37they've got to be careful.
08:38New Zealand are entitled
08:39to room to turn inside here.
08:41Germany have to give
08:42New Zealand room.
08:43Are they clear ahead?
08:44I think it's tight.
08:45I think they're ahead,
08:47but don't be surprised
08:48for Nathan Outridge.
08:49He's going to press the button,
08:51and he's going to ask
08:51the question of
08:52Greg Mitchell there.
08:53Germany had to give him room.
08:55That's going to go
08:56to the umpires.
08:57Did someone flag it?
08:59Nathan Outridge there.
09:00He's saying,
09:00did someone flag it?
09:01He's saying,
09:01did someone press
09:02the protest button?
09:03Liv McKay,
09:04she's at the back.
09:05Strategist hit the protest button,
09:06and will expect to hear
09:07something from the umpires
09:09on that decision.
09:10Or not.
09:12Two-time Olympic bronze medalist
09:13Eric Heil of Germany
09:15takes a chance there.
09:17An aggressive move
09:18by Nathan Outridge
09:18as he comes in hot,
09:19and so far,
09:20no penalty issued
09:22as they are now
09:23at mark number six,
09:24and now it is
09:25a sprint to the finish.
09:26Yeah, we just heard
09:27from umpire,
09:27chief umpire,
09:28Craig Mitchell,
09:29that it was very,
09:30very close,
09:31but it's been given
09:31a clear green flag,
09:33so great sigh of relief
09:34for Eric Heil
09:35and the German crew,
09:36and it's now just
09:37a sprint across there.
09:38Perfect execution,
09:39they push the limit,
09:40and they're going
09:40to get their reward.
09:42Oh.
09:45So history in the making
09:47on day two
09:47at the KPMG Australia
09:49Sale Grand Prix Sydney,
09:51winning race number four,
09:52and picking up
09:52their first win,
09:54it's Germany's
09:55Sale GP
09:56taking the victory
09:57in Sydney Harbour.
10:00What a start.
10:01What a start indeed.
10:08and it's
10:15.
10:18.
10:20.
10:21.
10:24.
10:25.
10:29.
10:29.
10:34.
