00:00We have discussed the controversy and how much I hated how it ended, but there was a lot
00:04between the start and finish of SummerSlam Night 2, and a lot of good that was in there.
00:11So let's break it all down with another wrestling recap.
00:14So, the WWE, uh, with a second night of SummerSlam, um, oh, looking like things are maybe a little
00:32laggy again, so sorry if there's a bit of an off-ness about, uh, the, uh, audio and video
00:39that we are rocking with at this particular moment.
00:43Um, so let's dive in now with our, uh, SummerSlam recap here for Night 2.
00:50Uh, we begin with the Women's Championship, as it is Naomi against Eoskye against Rhea Ripley
00:56for the Women's World Championship.
00:58I thought this was great.
01:00Um, I thought Naomi getting played out by her dad was an amazing touch.
01:05I think they did a great job with that.
01:06Um, and then the match again, it was fun.
01:08Eo and Rhea really do have an amazing chemistry together, and so I am, I am excited to see
01:16where they kind of go now outside of the championship picture, and Naomi deserves this win.
01:21This is an excellent character, and I, I think she has really, like, we talk about Tiffany
01:27Stratton kind of needing to figure out what her voice is, figure out what this character
01:29is.
01:30Look at Naomi as a prime example.
01:32Naomi is living this character on television, and really has this thing down to knowing how
01:38she would react in every moment, and portraying it perfectly.
01:42So, um, I'm happy for her that she gets the win here, and said it on the, uh, the Q&A we
01:47did yesterday.
01:48This feels like the most interesting division in WWE right now, with the, um, well, like,
01:55Eo, Rhea, you're adding Stephanie Vaquer to the mix, and having Naomi, like, the, the top
01:59of this championship kind of division is really, really strong on the Monday Night Raw side.
02:06Uh, the TLC match for the Tag Team Championships.
02:09I like that they gave, uh, Jeff Hardy and, or sorry, the Hardy Boys and the Dudley Boys a
02:13bit of, uh, a bit of rub before, with a nice little touch.
02:17I thought that was really cool.
02:18Um, as the match gets going, I had just explained to my wife, like, uh, because she went to the
02:23show with me in Calgary, and the Wyatt Six were featured rather prominently, especially
02:26at the beginning of that, and so I was like, well, they haven't really been around a whole
02:29lot, and then they came back, and then they had a couple matches where a lot went wrong,
02:32and they still won the titles, because that, that, that was the plan.
02:36Um, but it's been a little sloppy since they've come back, and then the first move of the
02:42match, basically, is a back body drop, and Joe Gacy's supposed to go on the ladder, and
02:46he missed every bit of it, and so they run back outside, bring him back in, and back body
02:49drop him on there again.
02:51Uh, but aside from that, this match was just brilliant.
02:54Um, you have Ray Phoenix going up, and almost getting the belts when he jumps up on Andrade's
03:00shoulders, uh, but that obviously gets broken up, and then you get the series of table spots,
03:06with Gargano hitting a springboard DDT onto Gacy through the table, and then, uh, Dexter
03:12Loomis with what was supposed to be a leg drop that turns into basically a senton, uh, going
03:16through, I think it was Montez Ford.
03:18Uh, you have Ray Phoenix with the frog splash going through Nathan Frazier, and then Axiom
03:22with the Spanish fly on Dawkins.
03:24I thought that, like, the whole sequence was awesome.
03:27Everyone is down.
03:28Candice LeRae comes running out.
03:29She's gonna go for the belts.
03:30She gets cut off by B-Fab.
03:32B-Fab gets cut off by Nikki Cross, and you just kind of think, it's done.
03:36Like, we, we had the women involvement, and there was, oh, wow.
03:39Okay, we move on.
03:40But then, Candice LeRae starts climbing again.
03:42And the ladder is just a bit too far in reach, and she's going for it, and she's going for
03:46it.
03:46Johnny Gargano is holding the ladder, but Ciampa gets pushed into Gargano, who's pushed into
03:51the ladder, which sends Candice LeRae all the way to the outside, and through a ladder
03:56that is set up on the floor.
03:57I had to pause it, because I was just making, just, sounds.
04:02Uh, I could, jaw-dropped.
04:04Unbelievable moment.
04:05Just no part of it did I see coming.
04:07And they, they did an awesome, awesome job with that one.
04:10Um, hopefully she's alright.
04:11And then the reaction after.
04:12Like, everyone reacted amazingly.
04:14With, like, Cole and Wade Barrett are like, oh my god.
04:16Um, Montez Ford has the biggest, like, oh shit moment.
04:20And Johnny Gargano's like, yeah, you're good!
04:22And goes after the belts.
04:23Like, just, everyone played the role that they were supposed to.
04:26Perfectly.
04:27Excellent, excellent work.
04:28All around.
04:29Um, you get a bit more of the, the Wyatt's kind of cutting everyone off.
04:32Frazier goes for the spear moment, where Ciampa is kind of hanging on the belts in
04:36the ladder gets pulled away.
04:38Frazier goes for the spear.
04:40Ciampa pulls himself up, and Frazier misses.
04:43I thought, a really unique counter to a spot that everyone was kind of anticipating.
04:47Because you could see, like, the, the entire audience is like, oh my god.
04:50And then Ciampa, with the, the core strength to pull himself up, I thought that was, I thought
04:54that was really great, what they were able to, to do there.
04:57Um, you get a, a few more big moves, and then eventually, um, Uncle Howdy comes in and
05:02helps out, and it is the Wyatt Six retaining.
05:04This match was awesome.
05:06Um, all the performers in this, aside from the Wyatts, I think, come out looking a lot
05:11stronger than they did going into this one.
05:14The Wyatt stuff, it's gonna need to really ramp up.
05:17Because right now, they're just heels.
05:19There's nothing different about them, or anything like that.
05:21They are just heels who haven't really been around a whole lot to get us invested, and
05:25haven't really even told us why they're heels.
05:27Um, they, they justified it on the broadcast just by saying, yeah, I remember when they sent
05:30us creepy VHS tapes for a bit, and then we liked them for a while, and now we don't.
05:33But, forget the, like them for a while part.
05:36That whole Chad Gable thing?
05:37Don't even worry about it.
05:39Um, I, it's not clicking for me, and I don't think turning them into House of Torture is
05:45the way to go about it, either.
05:46So, meh on the team that won, but everyone else comes out of this smelling like roses.
05:51Uh, Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria.
05:53A tough act to follow for them, um, to, to have a weapons match after just a dynamite
05:57weapons match.
05:58And so, again, this went a little bit more on the story, at least early on.
06:01Uh, but first, Becky comes out to a new theme.
06:03I like it a lot.
06:04I don't know if the theme necessarily meshes with the character, but I do also think that
06:08it was time for her to have a different theme than the one she had when she was the last
06:12kicker, um, all those moons ago.
06:15Some really fun spots, I thought.
06:17Uh, throwing Lyra into the barricade.
06:19She jumps up, springboards off of it, and, uh, lands on Becky that way.
06:24The stuff with the zip ties, um, and the, kind of, assault with the kendo stick.
06:28Becky lodges the chair onto Lyra.
06:30I thought they were doing a really good job of putting this match together.
06:33The Bailey interference ties in with a bigger story down the road, so that was that.
06:37Um, I really thought that this was a moment to put Lyra Valkyria over and give her, kind
06:41of, that big boost.
06:43And I, I'm, I'm almost becoming a little protective of her as a character because there's a little
06:48bit that's lacking with crowd reactions right now.
06:51And in-ring, you can see it.
06:52Like, this match was awesome.
06:54But character-wise, it's, it's, it's getting there and we're getting close.
06:58I, I feel like they went the exact wrong way on the go-home show for this.
07:02And so I'm interested to see what they do now with this character.
07:05You had a bit of a backstage thing and that was it.
07:07I feel like, again, this is a world champion at some day.
07:09But, they need to get more investment in her and right now that isn't there.
07:14So, interesting dynamic to see where they go now with the, the, the title not being within
07:20her grasp.
07:21Um, looks, certainly looks like they're obviously setting something up with Bailey who came in
07:24with the, uh, interference pin, uh, finish, um, accidentally hitting her.
07:28Jacob fought too against Solo Sokoa.
07:30I thought the video to set this up was very well done.
07:33Um, as for the match itself, I thought that it had another gear that it could have got to.
07:38Um, and it just never, before all the interference and stuff started to happen.
07:42And then again, I thought this was a big moment to get Jacob fought too back over and maybe
07:47kind of separate from the bloodline stuff a little bit more.
07:51Um, that obviously is not the case as Solo Sokoa wins.
07:55And so there have been a lot of criticisms of Triple H booking over the last 48 hours or
08:00so.
08:00One thing when it comes to specifically bloodline storylines, but a few of these in general,
08:05it does feel like the exit strategy on kind of the big long-term buildup things isn't
08:11really there.
08:12And it's just, well, it's long-term.
08:14It's like, there's a difference between long-term and it just being long.
08:16And I think we're at a, this is just being long portion now.
08:19Could be wrong, but it felt like this was the time to just let's get Jacob to win and
08:24let's move on from this thing instead of still being locked in this vortex for as long
08:28as we have been one other note, um, it would Tonga Loa and JC Mateo get locked in the cage
08:34after and Jacob fought to just whoops that ass.
08:38And I hated that part specifically for, um, JC Mateo to come over after just like he has
08:45had amazing performances in AEW and in new Japan.
08:48And like there is a very talented wrestler in there.
08:52And now he is just a part of the job squad, basically to think so little of him that Jimmy
09:00would beat him up a little bit and then throw him into the ring and lock him in there with
09:05a teammate of his and just be like, Oh yeah, Jacob fought to who's got this does not speak
09:11highly of where JC Mateo is right now.
09:13So that is one that has been absolutely screwed up by WWE to this point, uh, Dominic Mysterio
09:19against AJ Styles.
09:21First we get, um, Mr. Iguana and Psycho Clown shown in the crowd.
09:25This one was fun.
09:26A lot of Eddie tributes, um, 20 years ago, it was the infamous ladder match for custody
09:31of Dominic Mysterio.
09:32Um, and so you have a lot of Eddie throwbacks here and a good match like Dominic.
09:36We've said a while ago when they put the Intercontinental title on him, like for a while, he was
09:40just kind of Ray's kid and a pretty good gimmick, but the wrestling is really starting to come.
09:45And obviously the character is very well refined, very well figured out.
09:49This is really clicking now.
09:51And you see the reaction he got in Mexico.
09:54I think it's going to be very fascinating to see how all of that plays out at Triple
09:59Mania in a couple of weeks.
10:00And like, given that reaction, man, you could, you could convince me that he's the AAA, um,
10:05grand champion or mega champion, sorry, in a couple of weeks.
10:08Cause that was, that was a huge reaction.
10:10And this guy's starting to figure some things out.
10:12I know there will be some that would protest the Intercontinental champion in WWE being
10:16the world champion of, um, one of Mexico's biggest promotions, but there's a lot going
10:24on with this kid right now.
10:25And so I thought the match with AJ was really, really good.
10:27Then we get to the main event.
10:28It's Cody Rhodes against John Cena for the WWE championship.
10:32Um, this match, like it was both guys hitting finishers and kicking out of finishers.
10:38The match was just indescribably better than the WrestleMania one.
10:42There's no question about that.
10:43And the, the no holds barred stipulation really did work.
10:46And I criticized the Cena baby face turn the other day.
10:51And again, Ryan in the chat, um, saying that Triple H and creative messed up the, the
10:55Cena face turn.
10:56I would agree.
10:57Um, I think to have it happen with one, Hey, I'm good now promo on SmackDown sucked.
11:04And I hated every bit of that.
11:05And maybe there was a bit of a recognition that this crowd's not going to go with you
11:10guys there.
11:11Um, but you could have done it.
11:12Like you said, after the, the SummerSlam loss, you could have kind of your Hogan rock
11:17moment there at WrestleMania where the crowd has turned both guys.
11:23And so coming out of it, Cena's like, I thought you guys abandoned me.
11:26I, I, all these different things, but that support on Sunday really changed me.
11:32And so I'm, I'm back with you guys.
11:34And Cody's like, Hey, all of you eat shit.
11:36Um, I think there was a way you could do that there instead of kind of the subtle turn,
11:41but not really turn, but definitely a turn on Friday leading into this match.
11:45So didn't love all the way around it, but the match was good.
11:47Like it's a lot of big moments and a lot of big moves and a lot of big kickouts.
11:51And the crowd was there for every second of it.
11:53And, uh, eventually Cody gets the win.
11:55It's the right move to get Cody that victory, get it back on the, the face of the company,
12:01a really good passing of the torch moment at the end where you can see Cena, obviously
12:05mouth, I gave you everything I had.
12:08Um, I thought that was a cool moment with those two guys, Cody, obviously emotional in
12:12the ring after, so we'll see what kind of comes of this afterward and the followup with
12:17Cody, but I thought this was great.
12:19And then the end happens with Brock Lesnar coming out and attacking John, John Cena.
12:23Again, I hate that Brock Lesnar is back with everything that is alleged in the suit against
12:28Vince McMahon and all of those things.
12:30I hate that part of it.
12:31And also I just am not entertained by Brock Lesnar wrestling matches anymore.
12:36I'm just not, wasn't then, certainly not going to be now.
12:40So I, I don't think that this was something that needed to happen, uh, from a wrestling
12:44standpoint or from just an actual human being standpoint.
12:48Kind of hate it.
12:49All of it.
