00:00Back then, customers didn't know when the tank was full, so gasoline would often spray out.
00:04To solve this, engineers developed a fuel nozzle that could automatically stop the flow using a simple principle.
00:09However, the underground containers also had two major problems.
00:13They produced highly flammable gas that dispersed into the air during refilling,
00:16and they rusted quickly, polluting the environment.
00:19Over the following decades, gas stations were made increasingly safer through new technology.
00:23Today, when the underground tanks are refilled, there's a flap that closes when the tank is nearly full,
00:27and the accumulated gas is directed back through a second hose into the truck, where it condenses back into gasoline.
00:33When a customer fills their car, the fuel first passes through several hoses and filters before reaching the fuel nozzle,
00:38which has become a true technological masterpiece.
00:40Inside, there's a tube that draws air from the car's tank into a chamber with a membrane.
00:45When the handle is squeezed, fuel flows until the end of the tube is submerged, cutting off the air.
00:49This creates a vacuum, pulling three balls into the center, which causes the handle to release and stops the fuel flow.
