00:00Hello and welcome to Based in Kent. I'm Ronnie and this is the show that introduces you to
00:20original music artists from around the county. Each artist will be here with me in the studio
00:24talking about and performing their own original music. Today I'm joined by the head-shaking,
00:28foot-stomping rock band from Folkestone, Hot Rocks. Thanks for being here guys.
00:32Thanks for having us. So I want to jump into a little bit about you as a group. How did you
00:38come together to form Hot Rocks? So I'm in a band that's local to Folkestone as well and Barney
00:48actually lives over the road from our drummer, don't you? So Barney then saw me singing with
00:58them outside of one of our streets at our first performance. It was actually our first
01:03one. And then you messaged your drummer, who was in another band I was in, and then we
01:11ended up meeting up like that. I saw Roxy with a couple of them. I'd seen you with Valkyrie
01:18fire by then. Yeah, possibly. So she was doing some stuff and I thought there's a great front
01:24person, someone I should, you know, would be worthwhile working with. I had, in the meantime,
01:31some songs kicking around that myself and a chap called Malcolm Escott, who is the third member,
01:38but he lives in Enfield, we'll come to him later, had been sort of working on and I thought here's a
01:45chance to, you know, kind of get that thing going. So we did a kind of a demo of Heart Attack
01:54together, which then won a video competition. Yeah. So we got a video made. And then kind of from there,
02:06it was like, okay, we might have got something worthwhile pursuing here. And then sort of kind
02:13of continued it. So at the moment, there's us two doing this. There's Malcolm writing songs sort of
02:21from afar. He's in Enfield. There are bassists that we have in the pipeline. So it's kind of
02:28a fledgling sort of project, really. But this is sort of a... So a far and wide collaboration of artists
02:34is Hot Rocks. Okay, I love that. That was so much better than my answer. Just like,
02:38well, he saw me and then we do this. No, he saw the star that you are. Thank you. Yes.
02:43I appreciate that. You know, and the video, it sounds like that really got the ball rolling
02:47and was the sign to continue on. Video was fun. We kicked off, basically, there's this thing called,
02:54well, it's a screen south in Folkestone. There's a thing called Music in May that happens in Folkestone and
03:00they encourage a lot of sort of projects and things. There was this video competition as part
03:05of it. We put in the demo, they said, yeah, great. Can you do it? Can you organize? Can you all come
03:16down? All the members get down to a meeting with the producers, with directors and such on this
03:21particular day. You have to be there. Everybody has to be there. I was on holiday, obviously at this
03:27point. So I said, do you just go with your sister? No, I didn't even know what was going on.
03:31And I had work. You didn't know what was going on. I had work sorted. So my sister had to go,
03:34who's not in the band. Oh, she just went on her own. So we sent her sister there. Yeah,
03:39she sat there taking notes and they kept going, what do you think about this? What's the idea for
03:44this? And she was like, just fake it. I don't know. Sounds like a whirlwind. It was definitely
03:49interesting. The video was good. The video was really good. You can see it's on our,
03:53somewhere, somewhere on our social medias. Yeah. We throw a lot of paint around the place.
03:57Yes. Oh, it's painting. You like it. Heart attack. The director had this, this, this idea to,
04:05yeah, sort of gradually sort of slush paint. So there's no going back. Obviously once a scene
04:10had been shot. So art forms across the board. I love it. Your first song for us today,
04:15it's called Take My Heart Back to the Start. Tell me, tell me a little bit behind that song.
04:19It's a sad one. It's very sad. The whole, well, the idea of Hot Rocks that we, myself and Malcolm
04:28were sort of drunkenly chatting about, we've seen a lot of sort of 80s band who are still
04:34kind of going and we like 80s bands. And they were sort of, maybe we, you know, kind of not that
04:42populated the gigs, but, but more recently getting more, uh, kind of popular. And we thought,
04:50you know, it's time we did something. So that the kind of idea was to have sort of the kind of whole
04:56kind of feel good, the 80s sort of big chorus is kind of that kind of sort of anthemic sort of
05:02kind of song. So yeah, no, I think the idea was that we were going to go and do it into a, uh,
05:09dance, a dance kind of track. It has a bit more, yeah. It's more of a dancey track. Um,
05:13but I have got the, um, the coordination of a child. So we did try with a shaker and I was doing
05:20some strange things. I couldn't, I couldn't get it working, but that's kind of the idea. So picture
05:25that when we play it. Well, I can't wait to hear it. Take it away. Thank you.
05:38I look at you and me, how we used to be, when we get to be so tired.
05:48So take me back to when we can try again. Maybe this time do it right.
05:59If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
06:09If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
06:17If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
06:21If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
06:39So give me back what's mine, reverse the hands of time.
06:44If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
06:58If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
07:08If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
07:22If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start.
07:27If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start
07:33If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start
07:39If we fall apart, please take my heart back to the start
07:45and I really hear the 80s influence you talked about there that really comes through
07:59nicely but a bit more modernized I like that yes yeah I yeah I always I okay when you when
08:07you pitch that one to me it was like think rudimental rudimental also the idea but then
08:12mixed with sorry to point yeah kind of you know the chain the Fleetwood Mackie oh yes slow and then
08:22it gets in a kind of fast that's always the idea with the harmonies as well I think mm-hmm what
08:29your your next song for us today your love gives me a heart attack now you talked about this a little
08:33bit already there's a video for it give me a little bit of background behind this because clearly there
08:38must be a story if you pitched it for a video as well I tried to keep it slightly ambiguous I kind
08:45of thought I wonder what the the director so I didn't want to I didn't want to say this is this
08:51is it because I was like I was kind of interested as to what somebody else might with no prior
08:57and her sister pitched it so who God knows well in that case maybe we should just have the song speak
09:05you got something strange in your heart and veins a signal to your brain says you can't take the strain
09:30and maybe later defibrillator and times rise set your whole sky high he said hey girl I don't want you back
09:47your love gives me a heart attack cool here before we hit the stack your love gives me a heart attack
10:03in a danger zone when you start to moan it's a worrying combination you need rehabilitation
10:15you got to read between the lines you got to read between the lines and maybe take your time you got to see my point of view
10:23you got to see my point of view oh I see you and I see you he said hey girl I don't want you back your love gives me a heart attack
10:35who live before we hit the sack your love gives me a heart attack your love gives me a heart attack

11:09Hey girl, I don't want you back
11:12Your love gives me a heart attack
11:15Pull it before we hit the sack
11:19Your love gives me a heart attack
11:22Hey girl, I don't want you back
11:25Your love gives me a heart attack
11:28Heart attack, your love gives me a heart attack, heart attack.
11:40Hello and welcome back to Based in Kent where I am still joined by the band Hot Rocks from Folkestone.
11:44Thanks for being here guys.
11:45Pleasure.
11:46So next is one of my favorite parts of the show, other than your original music of course.
11:51It is going to be a quick fire question round game.
11:54A timer is going to come up on the monitor behind us, no pressure.
11:57Oh lovely.
11:57It'll start counting down when I ask the first question and we're just going to go through as many of them as we can just to get to know you better.
12:03Do we win or do we lose?
12:06You win in personality.
12:08Exactly.
12:09Okay, so do you prefer live or recorded music?
12:14Live, live.
12:15You prefer live.
12:16Yeah.
12:16They're both because one leads to the other.
12:19They're both.
12:20Do you want binary answers here?
12:22I want your honest truth.
12:24Oh, recorded.
12:27Okay.
12:28Tea or coffee?
12:29Tea.
12:30Tea.
12:32What?
12:34Coffee.
12:36Okay.
12:37Hard.
12:38Writing or performing your music?
12:40I like writing, but I'm definitely, at the moment I'm more a performer.
12:46I do write, but I'm very much a nervous writer.
12:50I like to do that in the comfort of my own home.
12:53You're an influencer.
12:54Yeah, I'm an influencer.
12:55You're influenced by being you.
12:57Yes, that's what it is, but you're, you're, what are you?
13:00I tell you, you keep, these are hard, you can't, they, everything you've suggested are
13:07just interlinked.
13:08You can't have one without the other.
13:10Okay, fair enough.
13:12Winter or summer?
13:13Summer.
13:14Oh, summer.
13:15Summer.
13:15Summer.
13:16But, but, but, but permanent summer is not, you know, you've got to.
13:20I think you're thinking about this really intellectually.
13:22Yeah.
13:23Intectually.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Intellectually.
13:26Um, I mean, Christmas, yeah, but summer's great.
13:29Summer's great.
13:29My birthday.
13:30What, just think of the things you're getting rid of.
13:33My birthday's in summer.
13:34My birthday.
13:35Okay.
13:36Okay.
13:36Uh, favourite song you've ever written so far?
13:40In the band?
13:41Yes.
13:42Okay.
13:42In the band, uh, I think my favourite's probably Heart Attack, because I've gotten really comfortable
13:48with it.
13:48Yeah, yeah.
13:49It's really fun.
13:49It's the oldest one.
13:50One Before the One is actually.
13:52Songs, songs gel, don't they?
13:53They take time and they, they start to become a thing.
13:56They grow.
13:57But yeah, I definitely, I feel comfortable with Heart Attack.
14:00Heart Attack's my favourite, but One Before the One I think it's going to be really good
14:03in the next few months.
14:04Yeah.
14:05Okay.
14:05Um, your favourite fellow Kent musician?
14:10You probably know.
14:11Uh, mine has to be, well, Kent, if we're basing it to Kent, it has to be my friend Byrne.
14:17Oh, yeah.
14:18Because he's my old, old, oldest friend.
14:21I'm going to say Sophia, because, uh, Sophia Stuchery, from, uh, Sophia Syndicate, who runs
14:25Folks in Music.
14:26Yes.
14:26Does all the, uh, music in May stuff, because I love her, and she, uh, kind of helps me kick
14:30start my whole career, so that's kind of great.
14:32Amazing.
14:32Yeah.
14:33Well, that took us nicely to the end of time for the round.
14:36So, your next song for us today, Show Me Your Love Conquers.
14:39That's a very powerful title.
14:40Yes, I, I, I really love this one.
14:43This one is, um, so it's actually really funny, because, as we said, Heart Attack was
14:47written, uh, so high.
14:49And, uh, and then we did Love Conquers, and it was written, uh, a lot lower.
14:53And I actually, and, uh, Love Conquers was actually so much more comfortable to sing.
14:56And then, uh, what we've done is, uh, we've been playing around with the keys to make
15:00him, uh, make him, make him a bit more, uh, easy to sing solidly in a gig setting.
15:08And, uh, now Love Conquers is, like, the highest one.
15:12It's a challenge.
15:14But it's really, it's really fun.
15:15I like this one.
15:16I think it's, um, it's got a bit more moodiness about it, I think.
15:19All right, well, take it away when you're ready.
15:21Thank you very much.
15:22In the night, there's carnal delight My ramparts fall under your mind
15:35I'm captivated, I'm under your spell I guess it's how the Roman Empire fell
15:42You're shocking on me, you're trying to call me You may be brutal, but you can't ignore me
15:49I got the fire burning within I guess it's time to let the Trojans in
15:57Make love not war, you got me singing You know you love it when you set my bell ringing
16:05I need to know just what you're thinking You can show me that your love conquers
16:12I see the way you deal with girls Like Alexander Webber, No New World
16:14Show me all our conquers Show me all our conquers
16:19Show me all our conquers Show me all our conquers
16:24Show me all I've conquers
16:27I see the way you deal with girls
16:36Like Alexander Webber, no new worlds
16:40I always thought there were things you could teach me
16:44But I guess it's just Benny Vidi Vigi
16:47I know you're pillaged, I know you're raided
16:51I've seen the scars from when you invaded
16:54I get the feeling I'm out of time
16:58You make the fences past my secret line
17:02Make love not war, you got me singing
17:07You know you love it when you set my bell ringing
17:10I need to know, just watch your thinking
17:14You can show me that you're all I've conquers
17:18Make love not war, you got me singing
17:34You know you love it when you set my bell ringing
17:38I need to know, just watch your thinking
17:42You can show me that you're all I've conquers
17:46Show me all I've conquers
17:49Show me all I've conquers
17:53Show me all I've conquers
17:57Show me all I've conquers
18:01Okay, I like that, that was very fun
18:11And you know, as you said, you're a performer
18:14And it shows
18:14Even just sat stationary
18:16You're putting on a show for us
18:18Thank you
18:18It's always easier to stand up
18:21I teach singing
18:22Which is always really risky to say
18:24When you're performing
18:26Because if you then do something
18:27And it's not what you're expecting
18:29You're like
18:29Yeah, I do teach this though
18:31Like I know what I'm talking about
18:32But obviously it's quite exciting to sit down
18:34And do like a more relaxed version
18:36Because I always have to stand up
18:37And like really support myself
18:38I'm quite comfortable sitting down
18:39Yeah, you have a great time
18:40It's fine by me
18:40But, but, but there's, yeah
18:43It's not showing off Roxy's moves
18:47Oh no, I look like, I look like
18:48I look really funny
18:50With my weird dancing on stage
18:52Oh no, I'm sure
18:54I'm sure the audience is right there
18:56With you dancing along
18:57Yes, yes
18:58I'd like to think so
18:59Instead of just like staring at me
19:00And going, what is she doing?
19:02You can't really expect audiences
19:04You have to lead the way
19:05You have to be a cheerleader
19:06So if you're leaping around
19:07Your energy is, is reflected
19:09So often bands are going
19:11Why aren't you jumping around?
19:12It's like, well you've got, you've got to show us
19:14You've got to give us, you know
19:15You've got to cheerlead, so
19:17That's cheerlead
19:18And that's what I am
19:19A cheerleader
19:20Interesting take
19:22Okay
19:22I don't think I've heard that perspective before
19:24But it actually makes sense
19:26I get it
19:27Yeah, I quite like it
19:28Yeah
19:28No, that's, I quite like that
19:30I like cheerleading
19:30So anyway
19:31Fair
19:32I've gone off
19:32No, that's alright
19:33So your final song for us today
19:35The One Before You
19:37Now that title kind of paints a picture
19:40Yeah
19:41Slightly different
19:43The One Before The One
19:44Yes
19:45Oh, sorry
19:46It's probably my fault for sending the one
19:48It's, it's, that's more than funny
19:49Yeah
19:50I actually don't know what half the songs are called
19:51Which is always entertaining
19:52But no, the, yeah
19:54The One Before The One's really
19:55It's a really
19:56I've, I've, you know
19:58I've done it at our first gig that we did
20:00I've done it on the radio
20:01And I might as well do it on telly as well
20:03We did this one
20:05I really, I really love this one
20:07I think this one's really sweet
20:08And we were working on this one a lot
20:10Just as I was breaking up with my partner
20:13Of three years
20:14And at which
20:15I keep telling people it
20:18And we did it at, because we did it at the radio
20:20And I thought it was quite funny
20:22Because I posted, I put it on all my Instagram
20:24Like, oh, we're on the radio, aren't we?
20:26And then we went into this radio station
20:29Had no signal
20:30Did all the songs
20:31And it was brilliant
20:32And then I said it on the radio
20:33Because it was on my mind
20:34Because it literally only just happened
20:35And then left the radio station
20:38Got a text from my ex
20:40Going, you were really good on the radio
20:41And I was like, oh, okay then
20:44Well, maybe this time you'll get a text saying
20:46Oh, you were really good on telly
20:47Really good on telly
20:48You know what?
20:49And it just gives him a reason to keep texting me
20:51Exactly
20:52All right, well, take it away when you're ready
21:11Baby
21:19Give you everything I got
21:23I did all the things they tell you not to do
21:28And maybe
21:31Could've played it differently
21:35Could've tried to be the girl you want me to be
21:40You made me feel like I'm the one
21:46The one before the one
21:49You made me feel like I'm the one
21:52You made me feel like I'm the one
21:59The one before the one
22:02You made me feel like I'm the one
22:05So tell me
22:21Was I coming on too strong
22:25Was it me who got it wrong all along
22:29It's crazy
22:33Was I just a stepping stone
22:37I should have left you well alone
22:40I should have known
22:41You made me feel like I'm the one
22:48The one before the one
22:50You made me feel like I'm the one
22:54You made me feel like I'm the one
23:00The one before the one
23:03You made me feel like I'm the one
23:06It's hard to discover
23:13It's not meant to be
23:19In time I'll recover
23:25From what you've done to me
23:31Yeah
23:33You made me feel like I'm the one
23:38The one before the one
23:41You made me feel like I'm the one
23:44You made me feel like I'm the one
23:51The one before the one
23:54It made me feel like I'm the one
