Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that there is no room for hooliganism or violence in sports, particularly football, as such behaviour goes against the spirit of sportsmanship.

He said sports should serve as a unifying force among Malaysians of all backgrounds and must not be tainted by unruly or divisive conduct.

00:00We take very seriously any issue of hooliganism and violence in sports, particularly in football in this country.
00:12There is zero tolerance because that goes against the very spirit of sponsorship.
00:18Everyone supports their team or their state or their province,
00:22but does not allow them to create chaos and tolerate hooliganism.
00:30So, we'll make a difference.
00:34Don't import that culture of hooliganism in sports as you read and see and watch in television from the experience of other countries.
00:50More tolerance to this.
00:51Because to me, it runs contrary to the very spirit of sports, of getting people together, knowing the differences, having such a passion.
01:03People cry when they win and they cry when they lose.
01:08You know, which means you cannot deny the passion.
01:13But it does not warrant them to take action which runs contrary to the whole spirit of sportsmen or, Hannah will correct me, sportswomanship, whatever.
01:26So, I think, I therefore share my excitement, Tansi Noza, about development today.
01:35And let me assure you, the good news is that there is one rare occasion that the sports council didn't ask for money from me as Minister of Finance.
01:44Oh, what a relief.
01:46But let me assure you, tomorrow we have a cabinet.
01:53I'm sure Hannah will just use the occasion to say a wonderful event, a wonderful building, you know, for sports, for culture, for the environment, for alternative energy, for green, for climate change, whatever.
02:11And we can, we have to look at the requirements when necessary.
02:17I can assure you, I will not announce anything today, but I can assure you that we will continue to monitor, we will support the council, and we will support the sports organizations as long as they care for the, or take special effort to improve governance
02:33and to make sure that the benefit does not go to the council or to the board members, but ultimately benefit the sportsmen and sportswomen, and particularly the young who aspire to do much more and will certainly be able to contribute much more to this country.
