Darth Vader lightsaber among movie memorabilia headed for auction

Star Wars lightsabers, Indiana Jones’s bullwhip, and Sauron’s helmet from 'Lord of the Rings,' are some of the film props and collectibles exhibited for a preview on Aug. 6, 2025 in London, ahead of Propstore’s entertainment memorabilia live auction. With the auction set to take place from September 4-6 in Los Angeles, the UK-based entertainment memorabilia auctioneer featured six items on the mantle, including a shark-tooth clapperboard from Steven Spielberg’s 'Jaws,' Jane Fonda’s costume from 'Barbarella,' and the memory-wiping neuralyzer from the first 'Men in Black' movie. The total collection includes over 1,000 collectibles with a total value estimated at $10 million. The priciest pick of the lot is Darth Vader’s lightsaber from the 'Star Wars' movies 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi.' The laser sword weapon from the beloved sci-fi franchise is set to fetch up to $1million-$3million when it goes under the hammer.

00:30What we have here today is just a very finely curated selection of the thousand lots that
00:51are going under the hammer on September the 4th to the 6th in Los Angeles.
00:56These are essentially some of the highlights, we'd love to have bought more, there are some
00:59incredible artifacts in this sale, but we've got things from Darth Vader's hero lightsaber,
01:06Indiana Jones's whip, Jane Fonda's costume from Barbarella, a clapperboard from Jaws, and
01:12of course Sauron's helmet from Lord of the Rings as well, some astonishing and amazing
01:16artifacts.
01:21Yeah, this is the star item from our upcoming auction, our September Entertainment Memorabilia
01:29live auction.
01:30This is Darth Vader's dueling lightsaber, so this is the one that he used to fight Luke
01:34Skywalker, Mark Hamill, in the climactic duels in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the
01:38Jedi, which of course were shot here in the UK at Elstree Studios.
01:44The lightsaber itself is built out of what is called a micro flash, which is essentially
01:49a flash attachment for an old press camera made by a company called MPP Micro Precision Products,
01:54which is a British company.
01:55And you can see there's a clamp here.
01:58This is where the flash would attach to the body of an old press camera.
02:01This is 1940s, 1950s era.
02:04And at the top, a flash bulb would mount and there would be a big reflector behind it.
02:09And it's just like what you see in movies where they're depicting the press of the 1940s,
02:14a big flash bulb goes off.
02:16That's what this was.
02:17The interior is designed to take big batteries, and they did a lot of that with Star Wars.
02:23They did a lot of finding real world objects and converting them into props, you know.
02:28Oh, cool.
02:29Any lightsaber specific questions?
02:30Okay.
02:31Yeah.
02:32So I've moved over from Steve and he sent him.
02:37Yeah, this is an original set used in the making of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
02:43So it's not just his bullwhip, which of course is his, you know, memorable weapon tool that
02:48he carries in all the Indiana Jones films.
02:50It's also an original leather belt and what they call the whip holster, which is essentially
02:55this strip of leather with the strap on it that is used to bind the whole thing to his
03:01belt.
03:02So this was used specifically as a set in production.
03:04You can see there's some little metal ties on there, and that's how the props department
03:09kept it together so it wasn't sliding around as it's being worn in the film.
03:20This is the close-up hero Neuralizer from Men in Black 1, so it's the very first film.
03:27This is the larger close-up version, so you'll see the Neuralizer in the films.
03:33They're actually a bit smaller than this, but this one is much larger because it's the close-up
03:37version, so to get in, the camera just gets in and gets all those details.
03:45And also a lot of material that was made for films was actually made for rental interproductions
03:59and goes back or used to go back to rental houses.
04:02So for example something like Jane Fonda's costume from Barbarella, I got a word that perhaps
04:08there was some costumes still in existence in Rome with one of the costume houses that
04:13worked on the film, and I went out to Rome earlier this year just to try and find what
04:17was there, and lo and behold it was still hanging on a costume rental rather.
04:20I mean it's just astonishing.
04:27How do you feel about this film?
04:29This film is called a film byaling down the floor.
