00:30When I saw The Conjuring, I could tell he was coming from a place of love and respect of classic horror.
00:36One thing I love about The Conjuring universe is these elevated horror stories told with grounded connections.
00:42The humans, the feeling of a real human and watching these characters and responding to what they go through.
00:49What I love about The Nun is that it's obviously in the same world, so it's a similar vibe to that, but it's its own thing.
00:56Nuns, they have this sort of shroud of mystery to them already.
00:58To me, they seem to be the ones with the answers, and I find that to be really compelling.
01:05I think people are so afraid of religious figures because they instill fear in people.
01:14You better be good.
01:16You better do this, because I'm closer to the Holy One than you are, and I'm going to deem you down into hell.
01:24Ready, and out!
01:26I saw The Conjuring 2, and like a lot of the audiences, I reacted to the character of The Nun.
01:35Instantly a kind of scary, stylish, visual horror.
01:41That's a good word.
01:43Icon.
01:43And in a way, The Nun is the original hoodie horror, in that you can't see the face, it's shrouded in darkness.
01:50You're going to be looking down, so we can't see your face for this shot.
01:53And three, two, one, ground!
01:57The shape of it, it's almost like a shark fin.
01:59I wanted to almost imitate that with the idea that our demonic nun is lurking amongst the shadows of an abbey amid other nuns.
02:07You know, if you look at the back of a nun, you don't know what she's going to look like when she turns around.
02:11Turn.
02:12Pause.
02:14Irene!
02:15Irene!
02:15You don't know what makes them tick, so anything could make them tick.
02:22Added to the fact that they live in these, like, beautiful old abbeys that are terrifying because there's constant creeks and corridors that lead to nowhere.
02:29And it's secluded, and anything that I think is secluded and private has the potential for fear.
02:39So it's already built in to the horror mechanisms.
02:42The idea of who is the nun behind that hood.
02:46It's been a long time since we've had somebody who can just stand in one place and evoke all sorts of tension and fear, just really unsettle you.
02:55I referenced Nightmare on Elm Street, and when Robert Englund was cast as Freddy, he really made that character instantly his own, and you couldn't imagine anyone else playing him.
03:03And I felt the same after seeing The Conjuring 2 and seeing this nun character.
03:08I said, who was that?
03:09Turns out it's Bonnie Ahrens.
03:10The moment we saw Bonnie, with the unique geography of her face, everybody said, this is exactly who we want.
03:17This is who it has to be.
03:18And James, working very closely with Eleanor, our makeup artist, created the look.
03:23Bonnie just really stands out.
03:25You just see this lone face in the darkness.
03:27And when Corrin came on, both he and James actually wanted to make her more realistic looking.
03:32So, not white, but pale. A lot more veins. Blue veins, red veins. Just gradations of greys. Of course, she kept her amazing eyes.
03:42You can just have her walk into frame, stand there, look at you, and then walk out. It's a small movement, but it becomes a big moment.
03:53She's so powerful, and she got those big eyes, and she's so scary.
03:59The fact that that character has created so much impact, it's because of her, you know, because she brought up to life.
04:07I don't like the dark. I don't like being alone.
04:09So, I tried my best at night to not let myself think of Bonnie's face flying at me with her wild eyes and her demonic teeth.
04:16It was hard.
04:17And this is what also I think is so very effective in this film. It's a real person.
04:22Not a puppet or a CGI.
04:26You can see my face. You can feel my emotion.
04:29I think one of the reasons Bonnie's character, this demon nun, has become so popular is because it's a contradiction.
04:35It's something so pure and so holy, and then it turns around and you see its face, and it's the exact opposite.
04:43It's this dark, evil demon.
04:45Go!
04:45Shit!
04:47We're fascinated with horror and with this type of things because we know there's something of us inside.
04:53But some people can't control their own demons, and that's when tragedies happen.
04:57And one and two and three!
05:00I think one of the things that makes that so terrifying is because to think that someone so devout
05:07could be overcome and overrun with this evil, it means anybody can.
05:13You're right.
05:14I'm кто- пятую.
05:14You're right.
05:15I'm not going to show the same DK.
05:16Goodbye..
05:18Who is your-
05:20You're right.
05:21And their messes in life
05:23What is it so obvious?
05:27That thing was worse.
05:29It would be better to Valve 2, but there aren't anyone that you're trying to see them .
05:32What is it so obviously going to 89htun?
05:35But the next year isppenado, that you didn't even want any emotions.
05:38But remember what's so possible.
05:39Oh yeah, the next video was even a good package.
05:40Well that was a goodweight, you're worth making money for your encounters now.
