Au début des années 1970, au plus fort de la lutte pour les droits civiques. Ron Stallworth, premier inspecteur afro-américain de la police de Colorado Springs, prend l'initiative d'appeler David Duke, le chef du Ku Klux Klan et se fait passer pour un blanc raciste. Son but : infiltrer l'organisation et la démanteler. Il a besoin qu'un collègue blanc se fasse passer pour lui. Filip Zimmerman fera l'affaire. A la grande surprise de Ron, Filip, de confession juive et donc lui aussi suspect aux yeux du Klan, y va à reculons. Il mène pourtant son enquête avec efficacité...
