A l'âge de 21 ans, Tim Lake apprend par son père que les hommes de sa famille ont le pouvoir de voyager dans le temps. Devenu avocat, il rencontre à Londres la jolie Mary dont il tombe amoureux. Mais leur histoire est brutalement interrompue. Grâce à son pouvoir, il pense pouvoir réparer ses gaffes en retournant dans le passé ou alors en anticipant les évènements dans le futur. Ses tentatives sont toutes des fiascos. A force de persévérance, il finit par épouser Mary. Il en profite au passage pour aider ses proches et le bilan n'est guère plus convaincant. Au fil du temps, Tim se rend à l'évidence : ce don ne l'empêche pas d'être malheureux...
