00:00It either takes a great deal of skill or a good grasp on an exploit or two,
00:04but some of the scripted losses in games can actually be prevented.
00:09Not only that, the game will sometimes take note of your unexpected victory
00:12and reward you for it with a secret in the form of an alternative ending
00:16or a special complimentary item.
00:18Don't let the hopelessness of the following fights discourage you.
00:21There's actually a way to win them.
00:23I'm Jess from WhatCulture and here are 10 unwinnable video game fights
00:27you can actually win.
00:29Number 10, Genichiro Ashina, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice
00:34Genichiro Ashina is Sekiro's greatest swordsman
00:38and your character's main rival, who you fight multiple times throughout the game.
00:42Your first fight against Genichiro in the intro is what sets off Sekiro's story,
00:47as this is when Genichiro cuts off your hand and kidnaps the prince you've sworn to protect.
00:52The fight is incredibly difficult,
00:54which is why the developers expect you to lose it and build the plot around your defeat.
00:59This said, from a gameplay perspective, the duel can actually be won.
01:03It isn't scripted and works like a regular boss fight,
01:07so if you're skilled enough to go up against Genichiro without any items or upgrades,
01:11Ashina's general can be brought to his knees.
01:14Unfortunately, this doesn't alter the course of the story in any way.
01:18When Genichiro is defeated, the game fades to black and triggers a cutscene
01:22where a hidden ninja slices your hand off anyway, altering Genichiro's dialogue ever so slightly.
01:28Well, no one said your efforts and skills were going to be appreciated.
01:32We aren't talking about a From Software game, after all,
01:34and those aren't really known for treating their player base fairly.
01:38Number 9, Shinra Army, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core.
01:42Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core is the prequel to Final Fantasy VII,
01:47which casts some light on the incident at Nibelheim
01:50and the tragic fate of Cloud's friend and role model, Zach Fair.
01:53In the game, you play as Zach, experiencing his life from his humble beginnings
01:57all the way to his downfall,
01:59where you're pitted against a battalion of Shinra troops and doomed to a certain death.
02:05The fight is meant to be unwinnable,
02:06since it's a turning point in Final Fantasy VII's story.
02:09The sheer volume of soldiers combined with their attacks
02:13can bring Zach down in just a few turns,
02:16except if he comes prepared.
02:18With enough grinding and stacking up on healing,
02:21it's possible to keep Zach alive
02:23and give him a fair chance at taking on the army of soldiers.
02:26Not only that, you can also wipe out all 1,000 of them,
02:30technically winning the encounter.
02:32Technically, we gotta say technically,
02:35because the following cutscene will still show Zach falling to the ground and dying.
02:39Well, it seems no matter how skilled you are,
02:41you can never win against scripted cutscenes.
02:44Number 8.
02:45Commander Zulk, Baldur's Gate 3.
02:48Baldur's Gate 3 starts the player off
02:50already in the deep waters of Dungeons & Dragons craziness,
02:54with a tutorial set inside a Mind Flayer ship,
02:57which is flying across one of the circles of the Nine Hells.
03:00In the final sequence of the tutorial,
03:02the Hell's Devil forces flood the ship's helm,
03:04and you need to activate its engine within a time limit
03:08with only one not-so-friendly Mind Flayer
03:11who's helping you hold off the enemies.
03:13The Devil's Commander Zulk is the strongest opponent you face in this section.
03:17He's capable of striking down any member of your team in just one turn,
03:21which is why the game expects you to run away from him
03:24as the Mind Flayer distracts him.
03:26However, Zulk can actually be defeated.
03:29Takes a lot of random luck and heavy reliance on the Mind Flayer's stun ability,
03:33but it's doable within the time limit,
03:35and you even get a powerful sword as a reward for it.
03:38Just be mindful that killing Zulk will make the Mind Flayer immediately turn on you,
03:42and then there's also the remaining army of devils
03:44who probably won't let you enjoy your new shining weapon for too long.
03:48Ah well, you win some, you lose some.
03:50And if you win this, enjoy your sword.
03:53Number 7.
03:54Lavos, Chrono Trigger
03:55Lavos is the main antagonist of Chrono Trigger,
03:58as well as its first and final boss.
04:01Your initial fight with him is supposed to be unwinnable,
04:04as you're essentially going up against the most powerful creature in the game
04:07with nothing but your base level equipment and abilities.
04:10The loss then forces your party to travel back in time
04:13to find a way to stop Lavos from destroying the world,
04:17putting the rest of the game's storyline into motion.
04:19Well, that's the standard playthrough of Chrono Trigger anyway.
04:23An experienced player knows how to defeat Lavos and trigger a completely different outcome.
04:28There are two ways of killing Lavos early without involving cheating.
04:32One is to beat him in Chrono Trigger's New Game Plus mode,
04:35and the other is to use a series of in-game exploits
04:37to lower the chance of Lavos hitting you
04:39and give you just enough time to deliver the killing blow,
04:43which may or may not be cheating depending on how you see exploits.
04:46Once you do so, you get a secret ending
04:48where the developers of the game personally congratulate you on achieving the impossible.
04:52A bit cheeky considering they were clearly prepared for this impossible eventuality.
04:57Number 6. Dallas the Hammer – Divinity Original Sin 2
05:01Dallas the Hammer is a powerful magister from Divinity Original Sin 2
05:06who's secretly an undead imposter,
05:08using her likeness to enact their plan of ridding the world of magic.
05:12The player can stumble upon this faux-Dallas early in the game
05:15inside a location called Fort Joy.
05:17Even if you know her secret identity, you can't really pick a fight with her at this stage.
05:22She's surrounded by loyal guards and wields almost god-like powers,
05:26making it impossible to defeat her.
05:28Well, that is unless you use exploits.
05:31A common tactic for defeating the fake Dallas early on
05:33is using a stack of explosive death fog barrels
05:36which you can loot from the ship level preceding Fort Joy.
05:40All you need is a character with high enough level strength or telekinesis
05:43to carry the barrels,
05:44and a quick use of a wall-clipping glitch in order to reach the location where they're stashed.
05:49After procuring the barrels and speaking with Dallas,
05:52you place a barrel or two around her character
05:54and then blow them up for an instant wind that forces her to retreat.
05:59Ah! Explosives!
06:00The most powerful magic of every fantasy setting.
06:03Number 5. Overboss Coulter – Fallout 4
06:06The Nuka World DLC for Fallout 4
06:08begins with the sole survivor getting trapped inside a deadly gauntlet
06:12and then fighting a raider boss Coulter
06:15– or if you'd rather I not use my Australian accent – Coulter
06:19who uses a special electrified power armor, making him impervious to all damage.
06:24The way the game wants you to defeat Coulter – yes, I've gone back –
06:27is by using a thirst zapper squirt gun
06:30that one of his lackeys left in the room leading to the duel arena.
06:34The water breaks Coulter's electric defenses,
06:36stunning him and allowing you to deal damage.
06:38However, as it turns out, Coulter's invincibility isn't all it's cracked up to be.
06:43Though the game wants you to believe Coulter can't be defeated without the water gun,
06:47his armor has a secret threshold of damage it can withstand.
06:50If you have a weapon that can deal a lot of damage really fast,
06:53Coulter can be wounded even in his invincible stage.
06:56Of course, defeating him like this is an exploit,
06:59so you don't get anything extra from going the extra mile
07:01and never touching your freewind squirt gun
07:03other than the satisfaction of breaking the game,
07:06which, let's face it, is pretty good.
07:07Number 4. Surviving the Sacrifice – Left 4 Dead
07:11The Sacrifice DLC for the original Left 4 Dead
07:14includes a special mission that serves as the canonical ending to the game.
07:18In the mission, your group makes a final run towards the sailboat,
07:22which will allow them to flee to safety.
07:24As you cross the bridge leading to the boat,
07:26a humongous horde of zombies descends upon you,
07:29and one of your teammates is forced to sacrifice themselves
07:32by staying behind and raising the bridge,
07:34therefore cutting away the horde from the other survivors.
07:38The sacrifice is unique in that it's the only mission in the game
07:41that requires one player to die in order to complete it.
07:44Although, if we're being honest,
07:46the fight against the army of zombies isn't really so doomed.
07:49The more skilled players can technically fend off the encroaching horde,
07:53and, if they're fast enough,
07:54make it past the bridge before their only path of escape is closed off.
07:58The last stand against the zombies is stacked against you,
08:01but it's not impossible.
08:03In fact, if you manage to flee while playing as Bill,
08:06who canonically makes the sacrifice,
08:08you get a special achievement called Defying Fate.
08:11Because who needs canon when you've got skills?
08:14Number 3. Sir Cothran, Dragon Age Origins
08:17Dragon Age Origins is a brutal game
08:19where each encounter feels like a matter of life and death.
08:22Most boss fights in Origins can be classified as hard,
08:25but the one that even the developers would consider unwinnable
08:28is the encounter with Sir Cothran inside the Denerim Palace.
08:32Cothran appears right at the end of your rescue of Queen Enora,
08:36where she tries to arrest you for your crimes.
08:38She's accompanied by a squad of fully armored guards
08:41that surround your party,
08:42ensuring any fight that might occur will not end in your favor.
08:46The situation demands that you surrender to Cothran
08:48and let her deliver you to Fort Drakken,
08:51prompting yet another rescue mission
08:53where you become the proverbial damsel in distress.
08:56However, if you don't feel like getting unjustly imprisoned,
08:59you can try to fight your way out.
09:01The battle with Cothran and her knights
09:02is one of the toughest encounters in the whole game,
09:05but it is doable with the proper crowd control
09:07and healing abilities.
09:09Beating Cothran allows you to skip
09:10the prison escape sequence entirely.
09:13Unfortunately, though,
09:14it also means missing out on all the amazing banter
09:17between your companions
09:18as they work together to break you out.
09:20Number 2.
09:21Grafted Scion, Elden Ring
09:23From Software Games have a history
09:25of impossibly hard tutorial bosses
09:27that teach you the important lesson of death and suffering.
09:31Dark Souls has the Asylum Demon,
09:33while Sekiro puts you against
09:35the previously mentioned Genichiro.
09:37Elden Ring is no different in this regard,
09:39featuring a tutorial boss
09:41in the form of a horribly contorted heap of dead bodies
09:44known as the Grafted Scion.
09:46The boss can be encountered only once per playthrough,
09:49as dying to it progresses the game to the next stage,
09:52so you just get one shot at defeating it.
09:54Combine this with the fact that Scion's moves
09:56are ridiculously nimble and hard to predict,
09:58and it becomes obvious why it's impossible to kill him
10:01when you're just starting your game.
10:03However, you might have a chance to do it
10:04on your next playthrough,
10:06but don't get your hopes up about being rewarded for it.
10:09The only loot you get from the Scion
10:10is a set of mediocre blades,
10:12and to make your victory feel all the more bitter,
10:15the only way to leave the arena after killing it
10:18is to jump off a cliff and die.
10:20Well, leave it to FromSoftware
10:21to make you feel miserable, even when you win.
10:24Number 1. Urizen, Devil May Cry 5
10:27Urizen from Devil May Cry 5
10:29is a reoccurring boss that the player fights
10:31during multiple points in the game,
10:33including its intro sequence.
10:35Since in the beginning you don't have
10:37most of your equipment and abilities,
10:39the first fight with Urizen is a brutal slaughter
10:41that the developers clearly expect you to lose.
10:44Therefore, setting off the main story of the game.
10:46That said, Urizen from the intro isn't indestructible.
10:50Just like any of his other iterations,
10:52he can be killed,
10:53although it takes an immense amount of skill
10:55and almost just as much time.
10:58Not to mention perfect execution,
11:00as your defeat is technically scripted,
11:02and dying to his attacks
11:03will immediately progress the game forward
11:05instead of giving you a retry.
11:07Speaking of progressing the story,
11:09because your defeat is what begins it,
11:11if you manage to defeat Urizen in the intro,
11:13the game will have no reason to continue,
11:16and you'll get a special secret ending
11:18that immediately cuts to credits.
11:20You'll also unlock a new difficulty mode,
11:22as taking down Urizen so early
11:24is a clear sign the regular difficulty settings
11:27are not for you.
