10:49one thing that's indisputably true about vince mcmahon
10:53is that he came from basically nothing
10:56but once his father came into his life
10:58whatever dreams of escape vince had
11:00went from the abstract
11:02to the concrete
11:03he could point at his dad
11:05and say that's what i aspire to
11:08and that's going to be my way out of this

11:41We talked business even at that age.
11:44That was sort of what we had in common,
11:47the fact that we were blood.
11:50Vince and I met when I was 13 and he was 16.
11:54I don't think I ever heard him talk about doing anything else
11:57other than wanting to be involved
12:00in the business of professional wrestling.
12:03I knew I wanted to be in my dad's business.
12:05Come on, Pop, there's got to be something.
12:07And that's when he allowed me to go to Bangor, Maine.
12:10It's the furthest northern outpost in my dad's territory.
12:16Bangor was a success and my dad was thinking,
12:20huh, the kid did pretty well.
12:22Then one day, I'm with my dad, he's doing a television show.
12:26And our television announcer kept asking for more money.
12:30The show was about ready to begin.
12:31And he said, well, if you don't pay me what I want, I'm walking out.
12:35And my dad, a lot of times, had these quarters.
12:38He would, like, click these quarters in his hand as he was thinking.
12:41So I see him off like this, and he's thinking.
12:45I said, Pop, what are you going to do?
12:48Go announce.
12:50Hear the announcer.
12:50Show number one recording of All-Star Wrestling in Hamburg, Pennsylvania.
12:55Just quick enough for you, Pop.
12:56Slated to play, just roll it, Daddy.
12:59Hello, everybody.
13:00My name is Vince McMahon.
13:01So I start trying to BS my way through as an announcer.
13:06Bobo, look at those neck muscles, big biceps.
13:09A great athlete and really, indeed, not to belabor a point,
13:12but it is indeed nice to have him back here this week.
13:15Vince was a horrible commentator.
13:17But one thing that Vince had was emotion.
13:23And Vince told stories.
13:25I realized that I'm the conduit.
13:28I have to translate to the audience what's going on in the ring.
13:32Here's the story that's being told.
13:34Zabesco is facing a legend.
13:36Our business is no different than a play, a movie, books.
13:40It's all the same.
13:41Okay, you have an environment, so we establish whatever that environment is.
13:44They've jam-packed this arena.
13:46The next thing you have to do is create some very interesting characters.
13:50Zabesco, of course, the only individual to have been trained by Bruno Sammartino.
13:53The good and the bad.
13:55A baby face, which meant a good guy.
13:57And the other was a heel, which meant a bad guy.
14:00And Sammartino holds the rope open for Zabesco.
14:03Uh-oh.
14:05Oh, look out!
14:06And then you introduce another character.
14:08Sends a referee flying out!
14:10But there's always this big finish.
14:11Zabesco striking Sammartino!
14:13And he really let him have it!
14:15Zabesco couldn't take it!
14:18The formula is simple, but not that easy to do.
14:24Zabesco laying in a pool of blood!
14:27Kept that job announcing for my dad.
14:33And it wasn't long after that, but my dad wanted to get out of the business.
14:37So he wanted to sell to someone.
14:38And when he was going to sell to someone, he wasn't thinking about me at all.
14:43As a matter of fact, he was going to sell it to Gorilla Monsoon, who was a partner at that time.
14:47When I joined the company, Gorilla Monsoon was the heir apparent.
14:57And I could feel the tension right away.
14:59Gorilla Monsoon thinks, I'm competition.
15:03And boy, was he right.
15:05When I proposed to buy my dad's business, they made a deal with me.
15:08I'll give you extra dollars here.
15:11Three months later, those.
15:13Three months later, that.
15:14And then the final payment.
15:15And if I miss a payment, then you get the business back and keep the money.
15:20That appealed to my dad and appealed to his other stockholders.
15:24Because they're thinking, this kid's not going to make it.
15:27We took over Vince's father's company.
15:30We actually were paying with money that they would have been generating should they have stayed in the business.
15:37You know, it was robbing Peter to pay Paul.
15:40Made the last payment, and no one could believe it.
15:43My dad was really, really surprised.
15:46Do you think your dad wanted you to succeed?
15:49I think my dad wanted me to succeed.
15:53But then again, sometimes I think he didn't.
15:55I honestly thought that he didn't want to make it easy for Vince.
16:01That he really wanted to let him know what it was like to struggle.
16:05But it was strange because when I bought the business, there was some friction there.
16:10Because my dad, he then worked for me.
16:13And I knew he didn't want what I wanted.
16:14Hello, everyone. Welcome to All American Wrestling.
16:17My vision was to upgrade the product.
16:20My vision was to make this mainstream.
16:23Not the lower class that everyone thought it was.
16:28I didn't want to be pro-wrestling.
16:30I don't like that term today.
16:32I want to be something beyond pro-wrestling.
16:34I want us to grow and compete against all these other promoters all over the country.
16:40During this point in time, the wrestling industry was regional and operated in what was called the territory system.
16:47There were separate wrestling companies around the country, and they each ran shows both live and on TV within their own territories.
16:55So you had Florida, you had Georgia, you had the Mid-Atlantic, the Carolinas, there was San Francisco, Portland, Seattle.
17:04Vince's dad had the WWE, which was then known as WWF, in the Northeast Territory.
17:12And there were these imaginary lines that no one crossed.
17:17It was a good old boy system.
17:18People had agreements, and you didn't break those agreements.
17:21As soon as I closed the deal, I knew right what I wanted to do.
17:27I'm going to go right into their territories.
17:29One of the great World Wrestling Federation cities, St. Louis, Missouri.
17:35Vince started promoting his own shows in what would traditionally be someone else's territory.
17:42And that ruffled a lot of feathers.
17:44Whether it's in St. Louis, Los Angeles, Hoboken, New Jersey, or wherever, no doubt the World Wrestling Federation will be there.
17:53So my dad was very much against that.
17:56He said, take it easy, Vinny.
17:58Don't rock the boat.
18:00It hurt my dad, but at the same time, I'm in business.
18:03Other promoters started threatening my dad.
18:06You know your kid, Vince, is going to wind up at the bottom of a river.
18:10I don't know what it is these promoters, I guess, love the bottoms of rivers.
18:16Whenever I threatened, I didn't care.
18:19Because you didn't own anything.
18:22I'm competing with you.
18:23Back with you here on All-Star Wrestling.
18:26And joining me now, former nine-time heavyweight champion of the world, Vern Gagne.
18:30I worked for Vern Gagne in the AWA, which was one of the strongest territories.
18:35And as far as Vern Gagne was concerned, Vince was Satan.
18:40He was the devil.
18:41He came in and ruined all the territories.
18:43In a moment, we'll take you to Tampa, Florida.
18:45Once they made their national expansion and started shattering the territory mold,
18:50so many of the top talent who were really fixtures in other territories
18:54decided to take a better opportunity with Vince McMahon in the WWE.
19:00Our talent were making so much money, which attracted other talents.
19:05It's a virtual flood of wrestling talent into the World Wrestling Federation,
19:10the likes of which we've never seen before.
19:12If you really look at what he did, he was quite cutthroat.
19:16He basically went in almost every territory and brought out their top guys.
19:19Then he would go back to their town with the three or four guys that he stole from there.
19:25There was nothing anybody could do about it.
19:27We understand that you're attempting to invade almost every area in the United States.
19:31That's right.
19:32Most wrestlers that worked for Vince came from somewhere else,
19:35and somebody else did the hard work to make that person who they were.
19:39And one phone call, they ran and left that guy standing in the dusk.
19:45Just like he did with me.
19:47I could make you more money here.
19:48It's a dog-eat-dog world, and you have to get your bite out of it.
19:54It was one of those things where I'm not taking anything away from anyone.
19:58I'm building.
20:00And if you can't compete with me, it's America.
20:04Tough.
20:05There's no doubt that the popularity of the World Wrestling Federation continues by leaps and bounds.
20:12At that time, I'm competing with all these promoters successfully.
20:16So I then said, okay, now I can do things my way.
20:19My dad chose Bob Backlund as a champion.
20:24I love to travel.
20:25I love the fans.
20:25I love wrestling.
20:26And every minute of my life is a pleasure.
20:28All right, we really appreciate it.
20:29He was the all-American boy, but a little too milk-toast.
20:34I was looking for someone that had more charisma.
20:37Look at that.
20:38Are you kidding me?
20:39Look at this.
20:39The dream.
20:41Just pummeling his man now.
20:42Oh, no.
20:43It's like, okay, there was Dusty Rhodes as a possibility.
20:45You can look up in this building in a matter of a few hours when it's full,
20:49and you can see a black man and a white man needing now the same popcorn box.
20:54Woo!
20:56That's funky.
20:57That's the American dream.
20:59I had only ever been told by my father that he just didn't believe in it.
21:04It seemed too large of an endeavor.
21:08Dusty could not take advantage of the opportunity,
21:11and so I kept looking for someone that would charm you,
21:14or someone that would excite you, you know,
21:16someone that was larger than life.
21:19This man is not a television illusion.
21:24The first time I met Hulk Hogan,
21:26it was years before I bought my dad's business.
21:30Wow, what a physical specimen.
21:32And he was Sterling Golden.
21:35Sterling Golden.
21:37My dad saw him and said,
21:39man, that's not your name,
21:40and he changed it to Hulk Hogan.
21:42The incredible Hulk Hogan!
21:47When they brought me up,
21:48they needed somebody that the people thought could be Andre the Giant,
21:53who's one of their big stars.
21:56Hold on!
21:58Come on!
21:59Andre the Giant is sports entertainment's first attraction.
22:04You could advertise Andre the Giant,
22:06and you could trawl a house.
22:08Hulk Hogan going for the bossy map!
22:10I was kind of like Andre's other half.
22:14We'd wrestled everywhere.
22:15Jay Stane was sold out with me and Andre the Giant,
22:18so I was pretty well established,
22:20and one of the ways I would get established
22:22was to have these so-called TV matches.
22:26During those matches,
22:28I would wrestle two guys.
22:30Sylvester Stallone saw that,
22:32and so that's how I ended up getting offered
22:35the part in the Rocky movie.
22:38I was talking with Vince Senior about doing Rocky III,
22:41and Vince Senior said,
22:42you're not doing that.
22:43You're a wrestler.
22:44You know, you don't act,
22:46and you don't do TV stuff.
22:48He asked my dad, and my dad said,
22:49no, no.
22:51Because my dad had invested a lot in Hogan
22:54and wanted to get his money out of him.
22:56He goes, well, if you do that,
22:57you're fired, and you'll never work here again.
22:59I said, okay, cool.
23:02When I did the Rocky movie,
23:06I knew it was going to be big.
23:09I'm coming after you, Malibuwa.
23:11If you took Scarface,
23:13if you took The Godfather,
23:16the Rocky franchise was bigger than all that.
23:19It was Americana.
23:21I knew it was going to put me on the map.
23:25It just went crazy.
23:27Would you welcome Hulk Hogan?
23:30You are one good-sized person.
23:32Thank you, thank you.
23:34One big man in the middle of this.
23:37Fern Ghani got a hold of me.
23:38He was, how quick can you get to Minnesota?
23:41Hulk Hogan, back in the AWA,
23:43and I cannot...
23:44When I went to the AWA,
23:45I started the Hulkamania stuff.
23:48I started ripping my shirt off.
23:50And it was growing and becoming dominant.
23:52I followed his career,
23:55and he was really honing in on his talents.
23:59Here comes Hulk, and here is the leg smash!
24:02I am the champion!
24:03This is your belt!
24:04Vince came to me and said,
24:06hey, I want to take over all the territories,
24:09and I want to do it with you.
24:10And I went,
24:11let's go, brother.
24:13Hulk knew where the business was going,
24:15and he knew Vince was the direction.
24:17It was an easy decision.
24:18Some guy's going to push you
24:19and make you the biggest star,
24:22and you're going to go national.
24:23The other guy just wants to promote
24:24Minneapolis and Chicago and Milwaukee.
24:26I've been dreaming my whole career
24:29about going back,
24:30and then said what he was going to do with me.
24:32I knew what was going to happen.
24:35Oh!
24:35You've got to be pitched!
24:37Hulk Hogan!
24:39I would like to thank the WWF
24:40for bringing the Hulkster back!
24:42So somehow I had to transfer the title
24:45from Bob Backlund to get to Hogan.
24:47I couldn't make that match.
24:48There were two, quote, baby faces.
24:50So I used the Iron Sheik.
24:53Bob Backlund!
24:54The great Hussein era!
24:56Bala, bala, bala, bala!
24:57The Iron Sheik from Iran
24:59was one of the most disliked individuals
25:02we've ever had as a heel in our company.
25:07There was a lot of nationalism there.
25:10A lot of rah-rah America.
25:12and for years we had problems with Iran.
25:15The president met with the National Security Council
25:17in Washington
25:17about the fast-breaking developments in Iran.
25:20There was American hostages
25:22that were being held in Iran.
25:24It's front-page news.
25:25It was talked about every single day.
25:28So when the Iron Sheik would be in the ring
25:30waving the Iranian flag and all that,
25:32actually I got a negative reaction.
25:36You look at what is happening
25:38and you try and tell a story off of that
25:41and have people be able to react in a way
25:44that they couldn't necessarily react in real life.
25:47Again, a lot of people do not like the Iron Sheik.
25:49You can't find an Iranian Sheik
25:52walking down the street
25:53that you can boo and hiss at
25:55and see him get beat up.
25:57But you could go to the wrestling matches
25:59and you could see it.
26:01Where are they chatting?
26:02Iran what?
26:03I don't want to say it though.
26:06It doesn't always age well,
26:08but you look at the movies.
26:11Movies depicted Japan
26:12as the evil empire attacking America.
26:15Anybody from Japan
26:17was not to be trusted.
26:19Germany.
26:19You are a liar.
26:21Russians.
26:23If he dies, he dies.
26:25You were taught in an early age
26:28these people, foreigners,
26:34they were the bad guys.
26:37From Russia.
26:38Right, wrong, indifferent.
26:39in that time,
26:41the bad guy
26:42was the Russian bad guy,
26:44the German bad guy,
26:45the Japanese bad guy.
26:47And it was easy to understand for people.
26:50Banzai!
26:52Wrestling is an imitation of the world.
26:55If you want to know what America is like,
26:57watch wrestling.
26:59We show you yourself.
27:00Tell me a wrestler you don't like.
27:02Sheik.
27:02Sheik.
27:04Sheik.
27:05How come?
27:06How come you don't like him?
27:07He's from our...
27:08From another country, bro.
27:09from another country.
27:10When she was going on,
27:12he followed the river.
27:14That's how he became rich.
27:15He never swam upstream.
27:19You can look back on anything
27:21and say,
27:23oh, I bet you regret that.
27:25Well, look back on,
27:26you know,
27:2610 years, 20 years,
27:275 years ago.
27:29Life was different then.
27:31You know,
27:31things were different.
27:32Values were different.
27:33And you can't take the values of today
27:35and look back and say,
27:37okay,
27:37the same values apply to that.
27:39Well,
27:39it was a different time,
27:40different life,
27:40different set of values then.
27:42If it were done today,
27:44wow,
27:44that would be a problem.
27:45But then,
27:47I didn't think it was a real big deal.
27:50The Iron Sheik!
27:52So I wanted to transfer the title
27:57from Bob Backlund
27:58to the Iron Sheik.
27:59And then,
28:00of course,
28:00setting us up
28:01for this big,
28:03blonde-haired,
28:04All-American
28:05to come in
28:05and beat the Iron Sheik
28:07from Iran.
28:07Hulk Hogan
28:09needed the ultimate opponent
28:11and the timing
28:12was impeccable.
28:13See,
28:13All-American hero
28:14versus this evil Iranian.
28:17The Iron Sheik
28:18has Hulk Hogan
28:20and he has
28:21the sword circle.
28:22Back then,
28:24Vince made the decision
28:25if I was going to win
28:26or lose the match.
28:27But,
28:28what we physically did
28:29in the ring,
28:30I called in the ring
28:31on the spot
28:32when we didn't rehearse anything.
28:34that's the art form of wrestling.
28:38I jumped in
28:39before the bell rang.
28:40Didn't tell him
28:41I was going to do it.
28:42Just felt like
28:42the right thing to do.
28:44Hulk now
28:44has the Sheik's robe
28:45and he clotheslined him with it.
28:47Didn't tell him
28:48I was going to clothesline him with it
28:49and choke him out of it.
28:50Just all happens.
28:52The Hulk now is in trouble.
28:54You have to listen to the crowd.
28:56The noise is deafening.
28:57You kind of like,
28:58feel it.
28:58You listen,
28:59you think.
29:00Hulk Hogan
29:00and he drops
29:01a big leg on him.
29:02Good.
29:03Shoot.
29:04He's got it.
29:06It's a really
29:06huge response
29:08from Madison Square Garden.
29:11Hulkamania
29:11is here.
29:14And of course,
29:15everyone knows
29:15of Hulk Hogan
29:16to this day.
29:17All I asked
29:18was for the whole WWF
29:19to stand behind the Hulkster
29:21and I told him
29:21I'd bring it home
29:22for the USA.
29:24Hulkamania's running
29:24worldwide.
29:27To put the belt
29:28on the iron sheath
29:29and then have
29:30the business direction
29:31that the belt's coming to me
29:33because we need a guy
29:34to be the hood ornament
29:35to take over the world.
29:37That was a business decision
29:38that Vince had to execute
29:40creatively
29:40and it worked.
29:43Many fans feel
29:44that Hulk Hogan
29:45is perhaps the most exciting
29:46pro wrestling champion
29:47ever.
29:48You can't
29:50overemphasize
29:51the importance
29:52of Hulk Hogan.
29:54You take Hulk Hogan
29:54out of the equation,
29:55I think,
29:55I think Vince fails
29:57in his expansion.
29:58I'm relatively certain
29:59he fails in his expansion.
30:00pro wrestling
30:01is a star-driven business
30:03and the ability
30:03to make stars
30:04is what makes you popular.
30:07Vince was much better
30:07at making stars
30:08than all of these
30:09other promoters
30:10because his father was.
30:12Vince McMahon Sr.
30:13was really good
30:14at making the top guys
30:16come across like stars
30:17which was more important
30:18than having good
30:19wrestling matches.
30:20That was Vince's strength
30:21because it was
30:21his father's strength.
30:23There was a point
30:24when my dad told me
30:26he was proud of me.
30:28He said,
30:28you know what, Vinny?
30:29All these friends of mine,
30:30they're not really
30:30friends of mine,
30:31all these promoters
30:31I've worked with
30:32all these years
30:33in their territories,
30:34you know what?
30:34Fuck them.
30:35You're beating all of them.
30:37I'm proud of you
30:38for what you've done.
30:39Fuck them all.
30:40And I thought,
30:41wow.
30:43It's the first time
30:43my dad ever said
30:44anything like that
30:45that he was on my side.
30:47Of course,
30:47he waited
30:48until I was a success
30:50and maybe he felt
30:51that way all along
30:52but he never told me.
30:54That was one of the
30:55biggest moments
30:55of my life.
30:56until
31:00I would like to have
31:05you all rise
31:07in a moment of silence
31:08for Mr. Vincent J. McMahon.
31:13The day before he died,
31:14it was the only time
31:16that he told me
31:17that he loved me.
31:17But, Paul,
31:18he told me
31:19before he died
31:20because I felt so good.
31:23or whether or not
31:26they care for you
31:26or not
31:27and so wonderful
31:28in their life
31:29to have someone
31:29that you care for
31:30that I had that opportunity
31:31to really care
31:32about my dad
31:33and to love my dad.
31:38I don't think
31:38he liked his father
31:39to be honest with you.
31:42Why do you say that?
31:43when Junior came along
31:48he had a vision
31:49that wrestling
31:50is going to change
31:51it can't remain the same
31:52and every idea
31:54that came out
31:54of his head
31:55drove his father
31:57up the roof
31:57it drove the wrestlers
31:59up the roof
32:00I remember the guy
32:00who sat in the dressing room
32:01talking about
32:01how nutty he was.
32:03When Vince became
32:04the owner of the company
32:05and he and his father
32:07started to clash
32:08the clashes
32:10were mostly
32:12because of
32:13Vince Senior's
32:14lack of willingness
32:16to accept
32:17where the industry
32:18and the business
32:19was headed.
32:22Vince come along
32:23with all these ideas
32:24that we thought
32:25were crazy
32:26it was just
32:27it was not wrestling.
32:30Vince had ideas
32:31about programming
32:32to a younger audience
32:34and not shying away
32:36from the fact
32:37that this was
32:38scripted entertainment.
32:40Vince really wanted
32:41to grow and expand.
32:43While everybody else
32:44was looking at
32:45the territories
32:46Vince understood
32:47that National Cable
32:48was the future.
32:50It was very clear
32:51to me from the very
32:52beginning that
32:53Vince was looking
32:54at a bigger distribution.
32:56USA Network
32:57became the marketing
32:58channel for WWF.
33:01Vince always wanted
33:02to promote
33:03something new
33:04that they were doing.
33:05Vince was never
33:07in the wrestling
33:08business.
33:09He was always
33:10in the entertainment
33:10business.
33:12Like for example
33:14when he first
33:15came in
33:15and took over
33:16he made that talk
33:17show
33:18and we thought
33:19he was off
33:20his deep end.
33:21Thank you
33:22welcome to TNT.
33:22It was so much fun.
33:26That's right!
33:27It was the Wild West
33:29in a talk show format.
33:31It was a riot.
33:33Whoa!
33:34You stupid idiot!
33:36Vince was experimenting
33:37with different kinds
33:38of ways to expose
33:40the talent
33:41to different audiences.
33:42I'm in favor
33:43of that for sure.
33:44He always wanted
33:45to use wrestling
33:46as a stepping stone
33:47into other stuff.
33:50Our company
33:50was growing
33:51and things just
33:52started opening up
33:54and I was like
33:54well yeah
33:55let's do this
33:56let's do that.
33:57The voice of the
33:58World Wrestling Federation
33:59and host of TNT
34:00Mr. Vince McMahon.
34:04Dave as you know
34:05there are lots
34:06of mothers
34:07in New York City.
34:09There was an overlap
34:09that you and Vince
34:10had early on.
34:12Oh!
34:12Yeah!
34:13It was Letterman's
34:15third anniversary show
34:17and they decide
34:18if a baby was born
34:20during the show
34:21then that baby
34:22would become
34:23the late night baby
34:25and so they sent
34:26Vince McMahon
34:27to one maternity ward
34:28and me to another.
34:30Vince I have a question
34:31for you.
34:32Yes David?
34:32Is that your tuxedo?
34:34No actually it's not.
34:35Okay.
34:38I think Vince enjoyed
34:39being on David Letterman.
34:41It was as culturally hip
34:43a show as you could find.
34:45It was a mark
34:46of credibility
34:46if David Letterman
34:47gave you a figurative
34:49thumbs up.
34:49I have a question
34:50for you Larry.
34:50Is that your tux?
34:52No it's not.
34:53All right.
34:54Tux you.
34:55Vince always looked at
34:57how could he connect
34:59different aspects
35:00of the world
35:01of entertainment.
35:02How can we co-brand
35:03with something
35:04and make both of our brands
35:06bigger and stronger.
35:07hi you're listening
35:12to MTV
35:12music television
35:14and I'm Cindy Lauper.
35:16Cindy Lauper
35:17was on MTV
35:18at that time
35:19and she was a
35:20huge star.
35:21for the uninitiated
35:26this is Cindy Lauper
35:28whose debut album
35:29She's So Unusual
35:30placed four singles
35:31in the top five.
35:32On the video
35:33for one of them
35:33Girls Just Want to Have Fun
35:35Captain Lou Albano
35:36appeared as Cindy's father.
35:38Cindy Lauper
35:39met Captain Lou Albano
35:40on a plane
35:41and just felt that
35:44there could be
35:44some connection.
35:46Heavy metal wrestling goes.
35:48Heavy metal.
35:48and there's an opportunity
35:49to grow our businesses
35:51both of us.
35:52Cindy.
35:53Tell all these people
35:54out here
35:54how I made you superstar.
35:56Tell them how you came
35:57off my reputation Cindy.
35:59How all women
36:00are nothing Cindy.
36:01What?
36:01Cindy.
36:03Cindy was associated
36:04with us
36:05and that made MTV
36:07think well okay
36:08here's Cindy
36:08she's going into
36:09this other genre
36:10let's work for
36:12this other genre
36:12as well.
36:13This week on MTV
36:14The Brawl
36:15We did two television
36:17shows on MTV
36:18got great ratings
36:19for MTV
36:20and it was
36:21a great storyline.
36:22I challenge you
36:23you fat bag of wind.
36:25At that time
36:26women's wrestling
36:27was
36:27de classe
36:30in a de classe
36:31business.
36:33And so
36:34I thought
36:34I'll have Cindy
36:35connect with
36:36one of our female performers
36:37that'll make that division
36:39mean more.
36:41Damn!
36:42Women's going down!
36:43Come on!
36:44Wendy Richter
36:45was the choice
36:47to represent Cindy
36:48I just got a call
36:49from her
36:50out of the blue
36:51asking if I could
36:52represent her
36:53in the ring
36:54and I said
36:55sure.
36:57Managing the challenger
36:59Cindy Lumpard!
37:04There was a buzz
37:05in the arena
37:06and it was because
37:08of her involvement.
37:09This crowd
37:10is on their feet!
37:11Oh she does!
37:12At this point
37:13many of my friends
37:14we were wrestling fans
37:16we liked the whole
37:18tongue in cheek
37:18aspect of it
37:19like here's a
37:20mainstream sports guy
37:22and now he's lending
37:23his voice
37:24to introducing
37:25Hulk Hogan
37:26and Rowdy Roddy Piper
37:27and he's doing it straight.
37:29Thank you Howard
37:30this is indeed
37:31an honor.
37:32It was funny
37:33I loved it.
37:33I had made friends
37:48with Mr. T
37:49and Mr. T
37:50was white hot
37:51at the time
37:52just really
37:52on fire
37:53so you bring
37:55the celebrity
37:56into our world
37:57to have this
38:06partnership
38:06with MTV
38:07it was quite
38:08a step up
38:09from what
38:09we had been doing.
38:11MTV was red hot
38:12back then
38:12so this product
38:14that Vince McMahon
38:15put together
38:16just wasn't
38:17in the back rooms
38:18or people
38:18that smoke cigars
38:19I mean this was
38:20getting to be
38:20mainstream.
38:22It changed
38:23wrestling
38:23now it's
38:25it's okay
38:26for people to say
38:27I watch wrestling.
38:28Andy Warhol
38:29your impressions
38:29of what took place
38:31earlier on here.
38:32I'm speechless
38:33it's just so exciting
38:35I just don't know
38:36what to say.
38:37I don't think
38:37it's over
38:38I think we have
38:39just seen
38:40the tip of the iceberg.
38:43At that time
38:44the business
38:45was a growing
38:46leaps in balance
38:47and I enjoyed
38:48putting in the work
38:49but my wife
38:51finally
38:51you need a vacation
38:52so I went
38:54to the Caribbean
38:54someplace for
38:55for two days
38:56I came back
38:57the next day
38:58and announced
38:58we're going to
38:59have one big event
39:00a year
39:00just like the
39:01Super Bowl
39:01and we're going
39:03to call it
39:03Wrestlemania
39:04she said
39:06you weren't
39:07relaxing
39:07you weren't
39:07enjoying
39:08any of that
39:08at all
39:08you were
39:09thinking about
39:09business
39:10on Sunday
39:12afternoon
39:12March 31st
39:13it's Wrestlemania
39:14Mr. T
39:15risks it all
39:16wrestling for the
39:16first time
39:17teaming up
39:18with champion
39:18Hulk Hogan
39:19you will see
39:20the greatest
39:21production
39:21of wrestling
39:22ever in the world
39:23wrestling history
39:24will be made
39:25the woodstock
39:26of professional
39:27wrestling
39:27Wrestlemania
39:28was obviously
39:29just again
39:30common sense
39:31there was a
39:32Super Bowl
39:33there were other
39:33big culminations
39:34of sports
39:35and things of that
39:35nature
39:36so why wouldn't
39:37we have one
39:38big end of a
39:39season type deal
39:41Wrestlemania
39:41Wrestlemania
39:42Wrestlemania
39:43maybe we could
39:44take this one
39:45huge event
39:46and put it on
39:47what was known
39:48as closed circuit
39:49there are going
39:49to be over a
39:50million people
39:50watching on
39:51closed circuit
39:51television all
39:52over the
39:53United States
39:53here
39:54closed circuit
39:55was simply
39:55a very large
39:57projector
39:57projecting on
39:58a screen
39:59in an arena
40:00what you were
40:01presenting
40:01and you paid
40:02money as if
40:03it were a live
40:04event to come
40:04in and watch
40:05that concept
40:06today sounds
40:07ridiculous
40:08but that's
40:09the way it
40:09was then
40:10closed circuit
40:11television
40:11every major
40:13city in the
40:13United States
40:14not only that
40:15Jack
40:15but it's going
40:16to 24
40:17foreign countries
40:19on big screen
40:20the hype worked
40:21so well that
40:22Hulk Hogan
40:22and Mr. T
40:23have been granted
40:23the ultimate
40:24yuppie honor
40:25co-hosting

40:27Mr. T
40:28and Hulk Hogan

40:32big match
40:32coming up
40:33Madison Square
40:34Garden
40:34Wrestlemania
40:35that is
40:36so in terms
40:37of publicity
40:37for Wrestlemania
40:38you wanted to
40:39invite the media
40:40as much as you
40:41possibly could
40:41we had an event
40:44in Madison Square
40:44Garden
40:45this isn't really
40:46wrestling
40:46this is wrestling
40:47and John Stossel
40:49from one of the
40:50networks
40:50wanted to interview
40:51some of our
40:52performers
40:52John Stossel's
40:54there under the
40:54premise
40:55that he wants
40:56to find out
40:56if Hulk Hogan
40:57is really as
40:58popular as the
40:58New York Times
40:59said
40:59and as we're
41:00walking
41:00he goes
41:01do you guys
41:02use razor blades
41:03to bleed
41:03and I said
41:04are you kidding
41:04me
41:05isn't that
41:05kind of
41:05masochistic
41:06my head
41:07was already
41:07carved up
41:08from the last
41:08couple weeks
41:09you know
41:09man I make
41:10a beeline
41:11to Vince
41:11I say
41:12Vince
41:13this guy
41:14is not here
41:15to find out
41:16how popular
41:17Hulk Hogan
41:17is
41:18he's here
41:18to expose
41:18the wrestling
41:19business
41:19Vince come
41:21into the
41:21dressing room
41:22and he said
41:23there was a
41:24reporter here
41:24that run
41:25around asking
41:25wrestling
41:25is wrestling
41:27fake
41:27fans
41:28I'm afraid
41:29I have to
41:29tell you
41:30it is fake
41:31he said
41:32I wish
41:32somebody
41:33would do
41:33something
41:33with that
41:34guy
41:34I did
41:36not hear
41:36Vince McMahon
41:37say anything
41:38about putting
41:39him in his
41:39place
41:40that's verbiage
41:41I never heard
41:41he didn't tell
41:43us to do it
41:44but he said
41:45I wish
41:45someone
41:46would take
41:47care of that
41:48guy
41:48and he walked
41:49out the
41:50dressing room
41:51I noticed
41:51the restaurant
41:52named David
41:52Schultz
41:53decided
41:54he would step
41:55into the shot
41:55I think
41:56this is fake
41:57you think
41:57it's fake
41:58out of nowhere
42:00David Schultz
42:01just slaps
42:02the crap
42:03out of Stossel
42:04you think
42:04it's fake
42:04do you remember
42:09Vince's reaction
42:10to John
42:12getting hit
42:12we all
42:13celebrated
42:14not just
42:15Vince
42:16everybody
42:16I mean
42:17David was
42:17getting pats
42:18on the back
42:18people were
42:18buying him
42:19drinks
42:19well at the
42:20time we were
42:21very protective
42:22of the business
42:23because wrestling
42:24is not fake
42:25it's predetermined
42:26and it's
42:27exhibition
42:27but I can
42:28tell you
42:28in the last
42:3010 years
42:30I've had
42:3023 surgeries
42:31in 10 years
42:32so if that's
42:33fake
42:34please explain
42:35it to me
42:36I didn't get
42:36the memo
42:36at the time
42:37you know
42:38gotta realize
42:39you know
42:39David was
42:40protecting the
42:40business
42:41we loved it
42:42until the
42:43lawsuit came down
42:44that's when
42:45the shit
42:45hit the fan
42:46how is it
42:47physically
42:48a doctor
42:49now says
42:49I have ear
42:49damage
42:50that's probably
42:50permanent
42:51mainstream culture
42:52was coming
42:53to pro wrestling
42:54but pro wrestling
42:56wasn't quite ready
42:57for prime time
42:58you see a similar
42:59thing on the
43:00Richard Belzer show
43:01when Hulk Hogan
43:02who's the most
43:03media ready
43:05of anybody
43:05in that crew
43:06finds himself
43:07in this incredibly
43:08bizarre
43:09and unfortunate
43:10situation
43:11well you know
43:12apparently you don't
43:12know what's going
43:13on man
43:13you must have
43:14got a long cabin
43:14or something
43:15well let me
43:15I'll lay it out
43:16for you little dude
43:16let me tell you
43:17okay big deal
43:18it's tough to take
43:20when people are
43:20trying to undermine
43:21our business
43:22and the thing is
43:23I fear no man
43:24I believe you
43:25can you dig it
43:26I can dig it twice
43:27are you a man
43:27what do you think
43:28I really don't know
43:28you want to step
43:29out
43:29like when Richard Belzer
43:32says hey put one
43:33of those wrestling
43:34moves on me
43:34well you just tell me
43:36brother when you
43:37want him to quit
43:37squealing okay
43:37alright
43:38brought him over
43:40and I just looked
43:40him in a front
43:41chin lock
43:41how about it T
43:43keep it like that
43:44for a little while
43:45when I let him go
43:47he fell and hit
43:48his head
43:48bells are just
43:52flopped
43:53and Hulk thought
43:55it was a pratfall
43:56in actuality
43:58he was hurt
44:00he hit his head
44:03when he fell
44:04and it was bleeding
44:05this was not good
44:07I sued Mr. T
44:08I sued Hulk Hogan
44:09I sued Vince McMahon
44:10I sued the World
44:10Wrestling Federation
44:11I sued them all
44:12yeah Vince wasn't
44:14real happy with me
44:14we were a very
44:16very vulnerable
44:17stage with
44:18Wrestlemania 1
44:19for me to be
44:20going around
44:21choking people out
44:22and stuff
44:22you know
44:22Wrestlemania was
44:23a big risk
44:24Vince banked
44:26everything on this
44:26Wrestlemania
44:27being a success
44:28he put a lot
44:29of money into it
44:29the story is
44:31if it had failed
44:31he'd have been
44:32belly up
44:32and you know
44:33it's very possibly
44:36true
44:36well my parents
44:37mortgaged everything
44:38they owned
44:39to make Wrestlemania
44:401 happen
44:41I was so young
44:43I didn't truly
44:44understand what
44:45that meant
44:46my parents never
44:48really took finance
44:48in front of us
44:49but you can feel it
44:50you know my dad
44:51would just keep saying
44:52this is gonna work
44:53and you know
44:54we're betting a lot
44:55on this one
44:55you know
44:56at this point
44:57I'm a teenager
44:58and I'm just like
44:59hmm
44:59we really didn't have
45:01the money to do it
45:01and if it was a huge
45:03failure
45:04then we were in trouble
45:05I'd say that's
45:07an accurate statement
45:08welcome everyone
45:10Gorilla Monsoon
45:11here at ringside
45:12as the World Wrestling
45:13Federation presents
45:14the wrestling extravaganza
45:16of all time
45:17Wrestlemania
45:18I knew that
45:20if we didn't pull
45:21this thing off
45:21that we were
45:23completely
45:24out of business
45:25it was a roll
45:41of the dice
45:42a big one
45:43but so many things
45:48that night
45:49went right
45:50it was
45:51a big success
45:52from Vince
45:54perspective
45:55that you could not
45:56hit a bigger home run
45:57it really
45:59was the sum
46:00of all parts
46:01when you think
46:02back to Wrestlemania 1
46:03I was trying
46:04to make a statement
46:05as to what
46:05our business
46:06really is
46:06we wanted to be
46:08all forms of
46:09entertainment
46:09all rolled into one
46:10when you have
46:12all these extraordinary
46:13people from
46:14all different parts
46:15of entertainment
46:15combined
46:16that is sports
46:18entertainment
46:18that's what we're about
46:19if there was ever
46:22a perfect storm
46:23this was it
46:23Vince was
46:24very excited
46:25and very happy
46:26you could tell
46:27he was
46:28vibrating
46:29he was
46:29on a high
46:31he knew
46:31we pulled it off
46:32Hulk Hogan
46:34and Mr. T
46:34in a tag team
46:35grudge match
46:36they called it
46:37Wrestlemania
46:38the biggest event
46:39in pro wrestling
46:40since gorgeous George
46:41everybody
46:42Madison Square Garden
46:43all the way
46:44around the world
46:44now you know
46:45what it's all about
46:46brother
46:46so right before
46:47the first Wrestlemania
46:48the whole business
46:49was looking good
46:50Vince was the strongest
46:52but you know
46:53there was still
46:53all these territories
46:54still going on
46:55after Wrestlemania won
46:57nobody knew it yet
46:58and these other promoters
46:59didn't know it yet
47:00but Vince won the war
47:01with that show
47:01I don't know if it was
47:03good for the industry
47:04it was good for me
47:06and my organization
47:07that's all I cared about
47:08after Wrestlemania
47:11whatever city we were in
47:12all of a sudden
47:13more TV cameras
47:15were everywhere
47:15in the buildings
47:16and people wanted
47:17to do interviews with us
47:18it was such a major success
47:19it really just put a skyrocket
47:21on the company
47:22this whole momentum
47:24changed the wrestling business
47:26from scar smokers
47:28and beer drinkers
47:29who want to see violence
47:30to having families
47:31in the front row
47:32that want to buy
47:33a ton of merchandise
47:34it definitely made wrestling
47:36so mainstream
47:38there was no denying
47:40that we were here to stay
47:42Wrestlemania won
47:48is a huge success
47:49it achieves
47:50more than Vince
47:52could have possibly
47:52imagined for his company
47:54but with greater success
47:56comes greater scrutiny
47:58and Vince becomes a target
48:01that expression of
48:03there's no such thing
48:04as bad publicity
48:04that's BS
48:06because there is
48:07a special investigation
48:09has turned up allegations
48:10that could outrage
48:12the biggest wrestling fan
48:13a legal fight is in store
48:15for the head of the world
48:16wrestling federation
48:17it's a scandal
48:18that threatens to knock him
48:19right out of the ring
48:19right on the heels
48:21of this huge success
48:22Vince finds himself
48:24caught up in a series
48:25of scandals
48:26that threaten to up
48:27in his entire world
48:29I'm going to be
48:30I'm going to be
48:33I'm going to be
48:33you
