00:00There are many more murders, making, in my opinion, Paul John Knowles the most heinous mass murderer in American history.
00:13For five months, in 1974, Paul John Knowles terrorized the country, murdering men, women, and children as young as seven years old.
00:24Victims were strangled, stabbed, shot, apparently just killing somebody excited Knowles.
00:29And there was a sexual element.
00:31He was a smooth talker. He could con you out of your shoe.
00:35And he became known as the Casanova Killer.
00:38Knowles may not be the most well-known, but he certainly was one of the most vicious.
00:45He thought killing people would make him famous.
00:49It was said his total was 30-something people. I mean, it was just unthinkable.
00:54It's shocking that the woman who brought the Casanova Killer to justice can still detail what happened during those harrowing days.
01:03It's been 49 years, and I am telling my story to the world.
01:07My name is Barbara Mabee Abel, and I survived one of the most heinous serial killers ever.
01:16I was born a twin in Detroit, Michigan.
01:45And my twin sister, Beverly, was born with cerebral palsy throughout my whole lifetime.
01:52I always called her Bevy.
01:54And while we were fraternal, we both knew each other's thoughts and inner feelings.
01:59She was the smart, funny person and had anything that had to do with fun stuff.
02:05And I was a serious person.
02:06We lived with mom and dad and older sister, Jackie, and my brother, Gary.
02:12And then all of a sudden, when I was six years old, my dad passed away.
02:18After that, mom decided that she needed a new beginning, and she loved Florida.
02:25So mom moved all four of us kids down West Palm Beach, Florida.
02:29And then she went and bought this house where I still live today after she got a job as a saleswoman.
02:36And she was so proud to buy this in the 50s and make it her own.
02:40And it's a darling little house, and it was safe.
02:44Barbara really loved her new life in Florida.
02:48She loved the neighborhood.
02:49She made a lot of friends.
02:51I have known Barbara for 56 years, ever since we were in the seventh grade.
02:57She was just very outgoing, and we got along real well.
03:01We could talk to each other about anything.
03:04Eleanor is my best friend in the whole world.
03:06We became like sisters through the years.
03:10She got married, I got married, and we moved up to Georgia.
03:15And my only son, Dale, was born in April 1968, and I was in my early 20s.
03:22When I brought Dale home from the hospital, he was a light of my life.
03:27He was so beautiful.
03:28He had red hair, blue eyes, and I couldn't get over hugging and kissing and singing lullabies to him.
03:35And I adored my son.
03:38But Barbara's marriage is short-lived, and she and Dale move back in with her mom and her twin sister, Beverly.
03:45With extra hands to care for Dale, Barbara joins the workforce, and she discovers her calling.
03:51Somebody said, hey, Barbara, why don't you go to work at WIRK here in town?
03:55They had an opening as a receptionist, and I wound up learning how to record commercials.
04:08And then I could do it, and I was hooked.
04:10I wanted to be a copywriter and start writing commercials and recording.
04:14Barbara was an author at heart.
04:16She always wanted to be a writer, so this worked out really well for her.
04:19But a few years later, in May of 1974, Barbara's mother dies.
04:29Beverly and Barbara are both so upset, but they, you know, make things work, and they develop a new rhythm.
04:36And by November, things are starting to look up.
04:39Thursday, November the 14th, 1974, was like any other day to me.
04:48Got ready for work.
04:50Dale went and got ready for school.
04:52Beverly got her breakfast and was happy.
04:55And after I dropped off Dale at his church school, I got to work and started writing commercials.
05:00When it was almost noontime, I tried to call my sister at home, and she didn't answer.
05:07And she always answered, which I thought was kind of weird.
05:14After work, I drove home from the nursery school with Dale.
05:20And I got to the door with my son and unlocked the door.
05:25We shouted out for Beverly, and there was no answer.
05:30So I said to Dale, go look for Bevy, and I'm going to go get some water, honey.
05:36So I went into the kitchen to go get my glass of water.
05:47All of a sudden, I had this horrible feeling, and I had chills going up and down my arms.
05:55Maybe it was instinct, fear, but I turned around.
06:02And I see this man with a sawed-off shotgun, and I was scared to death.
06:10At that point, Dale runs out and says, Bevy's in the bedroom, and she's bleeding.
06:14And I said, I want to see my sister.
06:16I want to see Beverly.
06:19So he took me into the bedroom with Dale.
06:23We went into this bedroom right here, and I saw Bevy.
06:28And I went around the bed, because it was a different way back then, and I put my hand
06:32on her, and she was crying.
06:35And she was laying there with the covers over her.
06:38She was bound and gagged, and she had blood dripping from her gag in her mouth.
06:43Once we loosened the gag, I put my hand on Bevy's shoulder, bent down and kissed her.
06:53Told her how much I loved her, and that we're going to be okay, because God's going to get
06:57us out of this, okay?
06:58And then I pulled back the bedspread and found out she was naked.
07:06That's when I lost it.
07:08I said, Did you rape her?
07:10Because if you raped her, I'm going to kill you.
07:13He started laughing and said he tried to rape my sister, and I just felt terror.
07:18I asked him, Why are you doing this?
07:22Like, what happened?
07:22He said, My name is John, and I don't want to go back to jail.
07:27I just need money and your car.
07:30I said, I've got money, and I'll get it for you.
07:35And it was the mortgage money.
07:38And then...
07:40He says, I'm going to take your son.
07:44No way would I let him take my son.
07:52And I said, Take me instead.
07:56And so he did.
08:05At that point, John, who I later learned was Paul John Knowles,
08:09went and tied my son, Dale, up to my sister.
08:14It made me feel horrible.
08:16You know, I mean, my God, she was naked, and he was only six years old.
08:22But I just had to get out of the house with John
08:24and make sure that Beverly and Dale were going to be safe
08:27and hope and pray that I would live.
08:32When he tied my son up, I told Dale to please act like a big boy.
08:37I said, We're going to be okay.
08:38And he got my keys.
08:41He already had the money.
08:42And we went out the front door to the car.
08:45And we drove off into the sunset.
08:49He asked me where the interstate was.
08:51So we got him over on the northbound A1A,
08:54and then we started driving.
08:56Everybody call you on the telephone.
08:58What radio say do you listen to the most?
09:01And all that time, he had the radio on
09:03and he was getting mad.
09:07And he had me turn the stations.
09:09And I was wondering, why does he want to hear the news?
09:13Thank you, Andy, very much.
09:14And this is W-I-N-G, Miami.
09:16And it was then I decided that I was going to do
09:31whatever I needed to do to survive.
09:35And I started talking about movies,
09:38beautiful songs of the 70s.
09:41I wanted to make him fall in love with me.
09:46I was trying to save my life
09:49and get back to Beverly and Dale.
09:50So I said, honey, do you want a cigarette?
09:54And he said, why are you calling me honey?
09:58I said, why not?
09:59You're not a bad guy.
10:01And that's when I said,
10:03you remind me of Robert Redford, the movie star.
10:05And he said, I do?
10:08And I said, well, you kind of do.
10:09You know, you're not bad looking.
10:12After that, he was very responsive
10:14in the way I was treating him.
10:16He was actually happy to be talking to me
10:19and talking to somebody
10:20because he said he had silence all day
10:22being in the home with Beverly.
10:26He started talking about his family a little bit,
10:30how he had a rough childhood with his father.
10:33I have brothers and sisters.
10:35I was raised in Jacksonville.
10:38I was raised with a Christian family.
10:42And then he said, I heard from your sister
10:44that you wrote something.
10:46And I said, I work at WJNO Radio
10:47and I'm a copywriter.
10:49Well, do you know how to write books?
10:52And I said, why do you want to write a book?
10:55And he told me that he wanted to be famous.
10:58And I said, what do you want to be famous for?
11:03And he didn't answer.
11:07And I didn't ask after that.
11:11As Barbara and her captor continue north,
11:14the vehicle has been recovered in West Palm Beach.
11:16It was stolen from a man named William Bates
11:19back in September.
11:20And a strangled body is discovered in Ohio months later.
11:25Inside the vehicle were credit cards
11:27and insurance cards
11:28that belonged to a guy named Carswell Carr,
11:32who was also murdered in a double homicide
11:36along with his 15-year-old daughter Amanda in Georgia
11:39just days before Barbara was abducted.
11:43Carswell and Amanda Carr were found
11:46in their ransacked home.
11:48She had been strangled.
11:50He had been stabbed approximately 35 times,
11:54a pair of scissors.
11:55It was the most bloody crime scene I'd ever seen.
12:02Based on the severity,
12:04we figured a lunatic might have done it
12:06because we had no idea who we were looking for.
12:10Back inside the stolen vehicle,
12:12they also discover a will
12:14of a man named Paul John Knowles.
12:18Little did they know,
12:19Paul John Knowles is a serial killer,
12:22zigzagging across the country
12:24on a five-month rampage.
12:27Karen Wine is 35,
12:29and her daughter, Dawn, 15,
12:30were found dead on October 16.
12:32And on this particular day,
12:34Knowles broke into their home
12:36and made them eat dinner with him.
12:38He tied them up
12:40and then strangled and sexually assaulted them.
12:43Knowles killed a 13-year-old girl
12:47hitchhiking near Macon, Georgia,
12:49who was later identified as Imogene Sanders.
12:52He raped her, strangled her,
12:54and left her body in the woods between trees.
12:57Doris Hosey was a 53-year-old woman
13:00found shot dead in her home,
13:02and Knowles shot her with her husband's gun.
13:06Starting in the summer of 74,
13:09and for the next five months,
13:11old women, children,
13:13it didn't matter to him.
13:14When he had the urge to kill,
13:16whoever was there happened to be the victim.
13:18The will identified the name
13:21of Knowles' attorney,
13:23Sheldon Yavitz,
13:24and so he was called.
13:27In early 74,
13:29I became associated with him
13:30because I was hired to get him a parole
13:32from Rayford Prison,
13:34where he was serving two sentences,
13:35one for burglary,
13:36the other one was assisting arrest.
13:39I told the West Palm Beach police,
13:41if you check his criminal record,
13:42you're going to find out all about him.
13:44So within three hours,
13:46they had Knowles' fingerprints
13:47and his picture.
13:49It was like Christmas.
13:51We actually had a name
13:52we knew who we were looking for.
13:54That didn't solve the case, however.
13:56We still had to find him.
13:59While the police are busy searching
14:01the West Palm Beach area
14:02for Paul John Knowles,
14:04what they don't know
14:04is Barbara is trapped beside him
14:06in her Volkswagen
14:07as he drives her out of town.
14:10Meanwhile, her sister Beverly
14:12and son Dale
14:13are still tied up in the family home.
14:16He kept saying,
14:16I've killed people
14:18and I realized
14:20he was so evil.
14:23I just wish I had the guts
14:25to try to go
14:26and push him out the door,
14:27but I couldn't.
14:28I was too tired
14:29and too scared.
14:32And Paul John Knowles
14:34got tired.
14:36He was exhausted.
14:37So he saw this motel
14:41kind of like on a hill
14:43and he said,
14:45we're going to stay over there.
14:47And then
14:48that's when all hell broke loose.
14:50when we pulled up
15:02the motel in Fort Pierce,
15:03he parked the car in front
15:05at the office
15:06and I said,
15:08you can drop me off
15:09and then leave
15:10with the car.
15:11And he said,
15:12nope, you're coming with me.
15:16Got his sawed-off shotgun
15:18and we went to the front office
15:20to check in.
15:23I was almost shaking,
15:25but I had to get my head together
15:26because I knew I had to go
15:28and make him see myself
15:31as being calm
15:32when inside my guts
15:35were churning.
15:38At the front desk,
15:40he put his arm around my waist
15:42pretending like we were a couple
15:43and he said,
15:45we're Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith.
15:47I'm thinking,
15:48okay, I put my arm around him
15:50because I wanted her to think
15:51that we were married.
15:53I figured if I said anything else,
15:55he might
15:55and go ahead and kill her
15:57and me too.
16:00And it worked.
16:01She gave him the key
16:02to room 10.
16:10When we got in the room,
16:12he says,
16:13just get undressed.
16:15I told him
16:16I didn't want to do anything
16:20and he says,
16:20nope,
16:20he says,
16:21just get undressed.
16:23So that's when he decided
16:25that he had to rape me.
16:35And when he raped me,
16:37I was thinking of Dale
16:40and Beverly
16:40and everything
16:41but being raped.
16:44But he couldn't finish.
16:46He tried to rape me
16:47three times,
16:48four times.
16:49Then he got furious.
16:50and he grabbed my thumb
16:52and tried to break my finger.
16:54He grabbed my hair
16:56and I thought he was going
16:57to beat me to death.
16:59And I said,
17:00what are you doing?
17:01And he like shook his head
17:03and said,
17:03I'm so sorry,
17:04I'm so sorry.
17:06He was Dr. Jekyll
17:07and Mr. Hyde.
17:08I didn't know
17:09from one moment
17:10to the next
17:10if I was going
17:11to be killed.
17:13Then he takes a sheet
17:14and he rips it apart.
17:16He tied my wrist
17:18to the bedpost
17:20and then he went
17:23and got my ankles
17:24and tied them.
17:26I was terrified.
17:28And I,
17:29I was praying
17:33to the dear Lord
17:34that I'd get out
17:34of this.
17:35I said,
17:35let me get home
17:36to Beverly and Dale
17:37and,
17:37and all of a sudden
17:39I was dozing off
17:40because I was so exhausted
17:41mentally and physically
17:43and,
17:43and then all of a sudden
17:45I saw my,
17:46I saw my mother.
17:58My mother came to me
17:59in a dream
17:59and,
18:00and she was like an angel
18:03and she was like,
18:05you're going to be okay.
18:07You're going to be okay.
18:09God's with you.
18:13When I came to,
18:14he got me on tie
18:15and he turned on the TV.
18:18That's when it flashed
18:19with our pictures
18:20on the screen.
18:22All I remember
18:23on the first news report
18:24was Paul John Knowles
18:25was a killer
18:27who had kidnapped me.
18:29and he was so intense.
18:33I mean,
18:33I couldn't say a word
18:34because he probably slapped me.
18:36So I just kept my mouth shut
18:38and let him listen
18:38to the news.
18:40Watching the broadcast,
18:42Barbara also learns
18:43that her son
18:44and sister are safe.
18:46I thought,
18:47oh,
18:47thank God.
18:49And I was relieved.
18:51That's when
18:51I just started sobbing
18:53inside
18:53because I didn't want
18:54to upset Paul John Knowles.
18:56apparently six-year-old Dale
18:58was able to free himself
19:00and his aunt
19:01before getting help
19:02from the neighbor
19:02to call police.
19:05I remember watching the news,
19:07just, you know,
19:08a normal day.
19:09And all of a sudden,
19:11Barbara's picture
19:12flashed on the screen
19:14with a story
19:15that was horrifying
19:16and shocking
19:17about her being kidnapped.
19:20And I started praying
19:21for Barbara's safety
19:22because you just assume
19:25that that person
19:26is not going
19:27to come back home.
19:29There were numerous bolos
19:30that were coming out
19:31about Knowles.
19:32And they had a description
19:34of the car,
19:34which was a gold-colored
19:35Volkswagen,
19:36not a very common car.
19:39They had their forces
19:41out looking,
19:42trying to track them down.
19:43And, of course,
19:44the more information
19:44they have on what he did,
19:46the more frightened we got.
19:49Trapped in a motel room
19:50nearly 70 miles north
19:52of her West Palm Beach home,
19:53Barbara sees that Knowles
19:55is fixated on the broadcast
19:56and his infamy.
20:00He was so intense.
20:04And I thought,
20:05that must be why
20:06he wants me to write his book.
20:08So I thought,
20:09if he says it again,
20:10I'll tell him
20:10I know how to write a book.
20:16When we went to bed
20:17that first night on Thursday,
20:19he took my ankle
20:20and tied it to his.
20:23Pretty difficult to sleep
20:24on a single bed
20:26with your ankle tied.
20:31Being tied up in the dark
20:32next to a killer,
20:34I couldn't get rid
20:38of the terror
20:39in my soul.
20:41while Barbara tries
20:44to survive the night,
20:45the FBI pay a visit
20:46to Sheldon Yavitz.
20:48They want to know more
20:49about the will
20:49found in the stolen vehicle
20:51and if he knows
20:52where his client is.
20:54At the time,
20:54the authorities
20:55only suspect Knowles
20:56for three murders
20:57and Barbara's kidnapping.
20:59They are still unaware
21:00of the full breadth
21:01of his murder spree.
21:03The will said
21:06that Knowles
21:07was going to record
21:08his crimes
21:08he was committing
21:09on a tape.
21:10Yavitz would then
21:11put it in a safe
21:12and keep it
21:13until one of two things
21:15happened.
21:16One, that he was killed
21:17committing his crimes
21:19or secondly,
21:20that he gave
21:21a written release
21:22for Yavitz
21:23to release the tape.
21:25The tape naturally
21:26was what we would
21:27consider to be
21:28a gold mine
21:29on what
21:30Knowles had done.
21:31In October, 1974,
21:34I met Knowles
21:36at a bar
21:36in Miami
21:37and Knowles said,
21:39I want you to know
21:40I'm a mass murderer.
21:42I said,
21:42I really don't want to know
21:43but I want to tell you
21:45what I've done.
21:45I've got to tell somebody.
21:47They've got to know
21:47what I've done
21:48for the future.
21:49I said,
21:50you want to give yourself up?
21:51No,
21:52but someday
21:53I want people to know
21:54that I've killed
21:55all these people.
21:56And then he said,
21:57well,
21:57I'll put it on tape.
22:00Okay,
22:01then they did
22:02his confessions
22:04of his crimes.
22:06The next day
22:06he's got the tape.
22:08I never listened to it
22:09but I put the tape
22:10in an envelope
22:11and then locked
22:12in a safe
22:13in my home
22:13and then
22:14he's gone.
22:17Once it was learned
22:18that the tape existed,
22:19the attorney
22:19who possessed it
22:20refused to turn it over.
22:23I said,
22:23this is in accordance
22:24with the lawyer-client
22:25privilege
22:25so I'm not going
22:26to help you.
22:27and he said,
22:28you are the worst
22:29person we've ever seen.
22:31You're horrible.
22:32We're not going
22:33to deal with you.
22:35I said,
22:36okay.
22:38As for Barbara,
22:39they make it through
22:40the night
22:40with little sleep
22:41and by the time
22:42the sun comes up,
22:43she's been captive
22:44for 18 hours.
22:45The next morning
22:49he said he was hungry
22:50and wanted to take
22:51me out to eat.
22:53So he took me
22:54down the road
22:55to a restaurant.
22:58It was like
22:58a little diner.
22:59We walked in the door
23:00and I smelled
23:01this freshly baked bread.
23:03Oh, I was so hungry.
23:07We got seated
23:07and I thought,
23:08well, maybe I can get loose
23:10and then I saw
23:12the way that
23:13he had the sawed-off shotgun
23:14and he goes
23:16and gets it
23:16out of his coat,
23:18takes his coat off,
23:19puts the gun
23:20on the seat
23:20and covers it
23:22with a coat.
23:24Then this elderly
23:25waitress comes over
23:27and waits on us.
23:28He ordered orange juice,
23:30bacon and eggs,
23:31hash browns,
23:33everything.
23:35I was thinking
23:36to myself,
23:37why isn't anybody
23:39noticing us?
23:41We were on the news
23:42last night
23:42and I knew
23:44at that time
23:45there was nobody
23:46to help me.
23:47I just couldn't believe
24:01that nobody
24:02had seen us on TV.
24:08And that's when I realized
24:10I had to keep on acting
24:12because he had the shotgun
24:13and I would not put
24:16anybody else in danger.
24:19If he was going to kill me,
24:21he was going to kill me
24:21but not with other people
24:23involved.
24:30After we had breakfast,
24:31we came back to the motel
24:33and he raped me again.
24:35Once again,
24:36couldn't perform
24:37and he got mad
24:38so I had to do
24:40reverse psychology
24:41and make him think
24:43that he was
24:44really great
24:46so he would calm down
24:48and not kill me.
24:53He says,
24:54I wish I would have met you
24:55before all this happened.
25:01When the news came on
25:02again later,
25:02he wasn't happy
25:03with the reporter
25:04and he wasn't happy
25:05with me.
25:10And then he took
25:11out the gun
25:12and put it towards
25:14my head
25:14and said,
25:15bang, bang.
25:16And then started
25:17laughing hysterically.
25:25And then he tied me
25:26up once again.
25:27He went out
25:27to make a telephone call.
25:30I was praying
25:31on and off
25:32every single moment.
25:33I was praying
25:34that I could be released
25:36and go home
25:36to my sister
25:37and my son.
25:42And all of a sudden
25:43I looked over
25:44at the nightstand
25:45and the motel key
25:46was there.
25:50He comes back
25:51and he actually tries
25:52to get in the door
25:53but the door's locked
25:54and Barbara realizes
25:56he doesn't have
25:57another key.
25:59I felt like
26:01a miracle just happened
26:02when he couldn't
26:03get in the room.
26:05And after a few minutes
26:07through the door
26:08Paul John Knowles
26:10said,
26:10when they pick you up
26:11don't tell them
26:12that I hurt you
26:13and I love you.
26:17And then there
26:17was nothingness.
26:20But I didn't want
26:21to scream for help
26:21because what if
26:22he was outside
26:23he'd kill somebody else
26:23and me too.
26:26Barbara begins
26:27to wriggle herself free
26:28first from the bedpost
26:29and then from the sheets
26:30binding her hands
26:31and feet.
26:33And by 7.30 in the morning
26:35Barbara is finally free
26:37and calls the front desk.
26:43Told her my name
26:44and I was kidnapped
26:46by a serial killer.
26:50When law enforcement
26:51came
26:51the FBI showed up
26:53plus they had
26:54a crimes lab come
26:56and they had everything.
26:58When I was rescued
26:59I had to go to
27:00the motel's front office
27:02because I had a telephone
27:03call waiting for me.
27:07It was Beverly
27:08and she was crying
27:09and she says,
27:10oh my God, you're okay.
27:11you know, and I said
27:12I'm okay.
27:13I said, how are you?
27:13And she says, I'm okay.
27:14We both started
27:15sobbing together
27:16and I said, how's Dale?
27:17He's right here.
27:18And mommy, mommy, mommy.
27:20He gets on the phone.
27:20I love you, I love you.
27:21When are you coming home?
27:22I said, I'll be there
27:23in a little bit.
27:23And I said, I love you
27:24to pieces.
27:25He said, oh, thank God
27:26he didn't hurt you, mommy.
27:29I hung up crying
27:31and sobbing
27:32for the next 15 minutes.
27:36We were elated
27:37that she was able
27:39to come home
27:39and I knew
27:40that it was going
27:41to be a long, long
27:42process of healing
27:44after the ordeal
27:47she'd been through.
27:48I had to be there
27:50and we hugged each other.
27:52It was a miracle.
27:54Barbara is rescued
27:55but he's in the wind
27:56and police actually
27:58put out a bolo
27:59beyond the lookout
28:00for Barbara's car.
28:03A Florida state trooper
28:04was patrolling
28:05out of Perry
28:06not far from
28:07the Georgia line
28:08and he apparently
28:10saw the stolen car
28:11and stopped Knowles.
28:16Knowles had a double barrel
28:18sawed off shotgun
28:19that he liked
28:20and he was able
28:23to get the jump
28:24on the trooper.
28:25Knowles then
28:26puts the trooper
28:28in the back seat
28:29of the patrol car
28:31and drives off.
28:33And so Knowles
28:34driving the patrol car
28:36ends up pulling over
28:38James Myers
28:39a businessman
28:40who was just in town
28:41for a few days.
28:42At this point
28:43Knowles abandoned
28:44the patrol car
28:45and took the trooper
28:46and Mr. Myers hostage
28:48and they left
28:49in Myers' car.
28:50They were next observed
28:52at a gas station
28:53in Lakeland, Georgia.
28:54You got a civilian
28:56and you got a state trooper
28:57in a uniform
28:58in the back seat
28:59with another individual
29:01and the attendant
29:02thought something's
29:03not right about this
29:05and reported it
29:06to the authorities.
29:09The kidnapping
29:10of a police officer
29:11state trooper
29:12was unheard of.
29:14That was national news.
29:16There was an urgency
29:16to try to find them
29:18before they were killed.
29:19We're here trying
29:20to recover
29:20our missing trooper
29:21which was kidnapped
29:22in the state of Florida
29:23along with another hostage
29:25and brought into
29:26the state of Georgia.
29:27The next day
29:28I got a call
29:28they got Knowles cornered
29:29in Henry County.
29:32I got another one
29:33arriving now.
29:35Deputy Sheriff
29:36saw the car
29:37and recognized
29:38it was a wanted car
29:39so the deputy
29:40radioed ahead
29:40and had a roadblock
29:42set up.
29:44Everybody from
29:45Metro Atlanta
29:45had a badge
29:46and gun was there.
29:48I'd never seen
29:49so many cops
29:49in my entire life.
29:53Noles crashed
30:00into the roadblock.
30:02At that point
30:02Knowles abandoned
30:04the car
30:04and left on foot.
30:09Paul John Knowles
30:10was running
30:10and had a shotgun
30:12and changed gunfire
30:15with the authorities
30:16that pursued him.
30:19They shot Knowles
30:21in the leg
30:22and he took off
30:24and he was bleeding
30:25and a young man
30:28was out rabbit hunting
30:30and saw him
30:30but Knowles
30:33was exhausted
30:34from running
30:34losing blood
30:36and Knowles gave up.
30:39You ever met him
30:40with the shotgun?
30:40He had a shotgun.
30:42He said he could have
30:43killed you right now.
30:45Are you scared?
30:46No, not really.
30:47The authorities came,
30:49took Knowles
30:50into custody
30:50and the rest
30:52they say is history.
30:55It was a relief
30:57to me
30:57when I saw it
30:58on the TV
30:58and when I got home
30:59and talked to Bevy.
31:01We were both relieved.
31:03When law enforcement
31:04realizes that the trooper
31:06and James Myers
31:07are not in the car
31:08with Knowles
31:09they assume the worst.
31:11It's more than likely
31:12that Knowles
31:13killed the two men
31:14but when he is arrested
31:16he refuses to say.
31:31One of his interviews
31:32he bragged
31:33he killed more than 30 people.
31:36Knowles felt
31:37that of everything
31:38he did in his life
31:39the only thing
31:41that he'd been successful at
31:42was killing people.
31:43He didn't want to be caught
32:04but he didn't want
32:05to go out
32:06at the end
32:07if nobody knew
32:08what he did.
32:10And he thought
32:10sharing his high body count
32:12would make him look good
32:14from a publicity standpoint.
32:16And he felt
32:17if he was famous
32:18he'd make money out of it
32:19which would go to his mother.
32:21This was his good deed
32:22for his mother.
32:24He wanted to be famous.
32:25He wanted a book
32:26and a movie made.
32:27And the media
32:28was all over it
32:29all day long.
32:30I saw a magazine
32:32and it had on there
32:34the picture of
32:35Paul John Knowles
32:36Cassanova killer.
32:37and I'm like
32:38you've got to be kidding me.
32:44Several days later
32:45another deer hunter
32:46discovers the bodies
32:47of Trooper Charles Campbell
32:49and businessman
32:50James Myers
32:51in the Georgia woods.
32:53He handcuffed
32:54both of them
32:55to the tree
32:55shot both of them
32:56in the back of the head
32:57execution style.
32:59Based on the caliber
33:00of the bullet
33:01authorities believe
33:03that Knowles used
33:03Trooper Campbell's
33:05own gun
33:05to kill them both.
33:07Once they were discovered
33:08essentially Knowles
33:09was cooked
33:10and Knowles agreed
33:12to take authorities
33:13to Henry County
33:14and show them
33:15where he ditched
33:16the Trooper's
33:16.357 Magnum pistol.
33:19They loaded Knowles
33:20up in the sheriff's car
33:22and were coming down
33:23I-20 into Atlanta.
33:25When Knowles
33:27secreted a paper clip
33:29and picked his handcuffs
33:31on his belly chain
33:32The man got a handcuff off
33:35and he went for my gun
33:36and he got his hands
33:37on my gun
33:38and you know
33:39you come to your own
33:40conclusion
33:40but I'm pretty shook up
33:42I know
33:42he would have taken
33:43my life.
33:45I began firing
33:46and continued firing
33:47until I was satisfied
33:49that the danger
33:50had subsided
33:50to both Sheriff Lee
33:51and myself.
33:52It was one of the best days
34:00of Dale, Beverly
34:02and my life
34:03when we found out
34:03that he was killed
34:05because he could kill
34:07no more.
34:09Before Knowles was killed
34:11they threw me in jail
34:12for contempt
34:13because I wouldn't tell them
34:15where the tape was
34:16but eventually
34:18I agreed to produce the tape
34:19if it was sealed
34:20by the judge
34:21until the court of appeals
34:23determined
34:24whether
34:24the lawyer-client privilege
34:26existed.
34:28Well, Knowles was killed
34:29in December
34:29so in January
34:31a judge rules
34:32that the lawyer-client privilege
34:34died
34:34and then
34:35the judge apparently
34:36listened to the tape
34:37and to all the confessions
34:39he had made.
34:40Although Knowles was killed
34:42before he could be prosecuted
34:44for his crimes
34:45the tape solved
34:4620 of our homicides
34:47he claimed
34:49he killed a lot more.
34:51There are many more
34:52murders
34:53making in my opinion
34:55Paul John Knowles
34:58the most heinous
35:00mass murder
35:01in American history.
35:05During the investigation
35:07to find out
35:08how many more
35:09bodies
35:10were attributed
35:11to Paul John Knowles
35:12we discovered
35:14that apparently
35:15Knowles was going
35:16to get married
35:16in the summer
35:17of 74
35:18but this lady
35:21had been to a psychic
35:22who told her
35:23that there was
35:25a bad man
35:25coming into her life
35:26and she needed
35:27to get away from him
35:28so she broke off
35:29the engagement
35:30and we feel
35:32that that's what
35:33set him off
35:33because shortly
35:34after that
35:35he started killing.
35:38Knowles said
35:39he killed
35:40at least 35
35:41and authorities
35:42were hoping
35:43that tape
35:44would provide
35:44you know
35:45some kind of answer
35:46as to who
35:47these other people
35:48that he killed are
35:49but it just
35:50wasn't to be.
35:53We ultimately learned
35:54the tape was destroyed
35:55in a flood
35:56at the federal courthouse
35:57in Macon, Georgia
35:58and no longer existed.
36:03Unfortunately
36:03because the tape
36:04was destroyed
36:05no one really knows
36:06just how many people
36:08Knowles killed.
36:12For Barbara
36:13the death of Paul John Knowles
36:15removes any fear
36:16of his return
36:17but it doesn't erase
36:19the trauma
36:19for her, Beverly
36:21or Dale.
36:23My son needed help
36:25he was only
36:26six years old
36:27I knew it affected him
36:29I could see it
36:31in his eyes
36:32and how he wanted
36:32to be very protected
36:34of me
36:34after it happened
36:35and was afraid
36:37when I had to go to work
36:38and drop him off
36:39at the church school
36:40but we had
36:41the pastors
36:42at his church school
36:43talk to all three of us
36:45and pray over us
36:47and everything
36:47and he's
36:49a beautiful
36:50beautiful family member
36:51now
36:52has his own business
36:53and he
36:55is a beautiful
36:56Christian
36:57helping others now.
36:59There were days
37:00that Barbara
37:00was able
37:01to somewhat cope
37:03and there were days
37:04that she couldn't
37:05cope at all.
37:07It was
37:08very strenuous
37:10on her psyche
37:11she would call me
37:13on the phone
37:13and would be crying
37:15and then I'd get
37:16off the phone
37:17and I'd be bawling.
37:19I wound up
37:20one Saturday
37:21just losing it
37:22and screamed
37:25bloody murder
37:26and all I could hear
37:27in the distance
37:29was my son
37:30crying out to me
37:32and I came to
37:33and that's when
37:36I decided to go
37:37to the West Palm Beach
37:38Mental Health Center
37:40and went to see
37:42a beautiful
37:43beautiful woman
37:44and when I told her
37:46my story
37:47she said
37:48you're not crazy
37:50that's nothing
37:51but stress
37:52and I knew
37:54at that time
37:55I was blessed
37:56that God
37:58let me live
37:58and gave me
37:59the right words
38:00to think
38:00and say
38:01and do
38:02during that
38:03horrible time
38:03in my life
38:04you really never know
38:07until you put
38:07in that situation
38:08just how you
38:09would react
38:10but Barbara
38:12did exactly
38:13what she had
38:13to do
38:14because she knew
38:15she had Dale
38:16and Beverly
38:16at home
38:17that she had
38:18to take care
38:19of them
38:19Barbara is
38:21one of the
38:22strongest women
38:23I know
38:23and I'm blessed
38:24to know Barbara
38:25and have her
38:26as a friend
38:27that she is
38:28Beverly
38:30couldn't talk
38:30about the
38:31kidnapping
38:31for several
38:33years
38:34and there
38:36were several
38:36times when I
38:37wanted to move
38:38after being
38:38kidnapped
38:39and then it
38:40dawned on me
38:40this is Mama's
38:41house
