00:00Snow was falling in the top left-hand corner of Wales. Flakes of snow the size of old pennies
00:13had been falling for days, and now there was deep snow everywhere. Snow so thick it piled up on the
00:19sheep who had come down from the hill to huddle for shelter in the doorways of Flaniog town.
00:23That's a warm place by Eli the Baker's shop. He'll light his bake oven soon to bake tomorrow's bread.
00:30I can't bake bread without any flour. Look, my last bag. There hasn't been a delivery of flour for
00:37three weeks now. Oh dear. Oh, I'm going to talk to Dye Station. Things can't go on like this.
00:44Oh, good morning, Eli Baker. Where are you off to, looking so fierce? Dye Station. I'm right out of flour.
00:54Out of flour is it? Well, I'm out of everything. Bullseyes, curtain rings, drawing pins, egg coesies,
01:01flannel nighties, gobstoppers, hairnets, eeks, jelly babies, knitting needles, lampshades. You name it, I'm out of it.
01:08I dare say, but what do you expect me to do about it? This is a railway, isn't it? Railways deliver
01:18goods, railways deliver flour. And bullseyes and curtain rings and acid rocks. Yes, yes, I appreciate
01:24that, but I'm afraid the railway isn't running just at the moment on account of the snow. It is just a
01:31case of having to manage without one or two things. Flour, Dye Station, flour, without which we cannot
01:38bake bread, and without bread we shall starve. Oh, oh, I hadn't thought of that before.
01:45Well, now you have, haven't you? There's two tons of flour waiting at Grumbly Station for
01:50Ivor to collect. And two dozen tin openers, and a box of long underwear, and a ream and
01:55a half of blotting paper, and six cartons of crisps, and all dozens of boxes of paper hankies.
02:02And you know how people need them this weather. Oh, that is a problem. They will have to think
02:11of something. Where's Jones the steam, I wonder? Oh, down in Ivor's ship. Oh, sheep in here
02:19as well. There seem to be sheep everywhere today. Oh, yes, well, you know, I have the fire going
02:25a bit, otherwise the pipes would freeze like, and the sheep come in for a warm. Jones? Oh,
02:29hello, Dye. What brings you down here? Edwin Jones, we have an emergency. Eli the baker is
02:36out of flour. There'll be no bread tomorrow unless we can get through to Grumbly Town and
02:41fetch it. Oh, but the snow. I mean, it's four or five feet deep in places. Ivor would never
02:46be able to get through that, would you, Ivor? You would? But how? You need a snowplow
02:52or something? Yes, of course, a snowplow. Snowplow? Yes, you know, one of those things
03:00they put on the front of cars and engines. A snowplow, you know? Well, no. I don't know.
03:06Well, come on, come on. Let's go and see Bynon Smith. He'll know how to make a snowplow.
03:10Come on, Dye. Oh, Jones, you're always running everywhere. Bynon Smith was making horseshoes.
03:21He was very interested in the idea of making a snowplow for Ivor. He understood exactly
03:26what Jones the steam meant and started drawing on the wall at once. Before long, he was hammering
03:31and welding and twisting pieces of angle iron and sheet metal. By dinner time, it was finished
03:36and they dragged the strange-looking piece of metal like a sledge through the snow down
03:40towards Ivor's shed. There, Ivor. It could have been made for you. Well, it was made for
03:49him, wasn't it? Right then. Come on then, Ivor. Let's try it out. What do we do? Well, you
03:56just charge straight at the snow and if Ivor can't shovel his way through, well, you pull back
04:02and have another go. All right then. Mind out then. Are you ready, Ivor?
04:11Come on, Ivor. Shove. Shove. Oh, it works. It works, Bynon Smith. Keep going, Ivor. Don't
04:19stop till you get to Grumbly Town. There was a marvellous sight. The snowdrifts lay deep
04:27on the railway line, but Ivor charged through them and split them like meringues. Ivor felt
04:33really happy. His fire was burning well, his pressure was high, and the snow was leaping
04:38upward away on each side of him as he pounded down the line towards Grumbly Town.
