00:00The state, but we wanted to, because I was going to do it anyway, but on the localities to participate with this effort.
00:06Because if you didn't do it, you would obviously have a lot that wouldn't do it.
00:10So that's just the obligations that have been provided under law.
00:14And we expect everybody to fulfill their obligations under law.
00:18And both the Florida Constitution provides me, but then that legislation also provided supplemental authority
00:24so that the governor can ensure enforcement and that those duties are upheld.
00:28And I won't hesitate to do it, but I would just tell people, because I get, like, not everybody wants to see immigration laws enforced.
00:37Not everybody wants to see illegal aliens removed.
00:40Most do.
00:41And when you see that happen and then you see, you know, less traffic problems, less stress on health care in schools,
00:48people really are appreciative when that happens.
00:51But I know that's not 100%, but the reality is, is we had that debate in Florida.
00:56I had to fight a couple leaders of my own party in the House to get where we are, but we landed it.
01:02And now that's, that's the law.
01:04And so just follow it.
01:06And I think you're going to find that that's going to be the best way forward for everybody.
01:10Would you have suspended him if he had not signed him?
01:13If you don't meet your obligations under that, under the law,
01:17if you don't fulfill the duties that have been imposed upon you,
01:21you absolutely will be suspended.
01:24Now, I know the Attorney General wrote him a letter, all this stuff.
01:27You know, the reality is I just want to get it right.
01:29I just want to land the plane right.
01:31And so I'm glad it worked out that way.
01:33But this is just something that we're watching.
01:35And, you know, Dave Kerner brought up Palm Beach County State Attorney.
01:40And what may have happened on this thing, I just know we watch those things, too.
01:45Now, I don't just shoot from the hip.
01:46I mean, people build a record and the people can present a record to me.
01:49And I look to make sure that our duties are there because we know people are going to sue off this
01:54and try to try to drag it up in court.
01:57Although we we won the suit that we did in Tampa when we had that.
02:02And eventually we're able to settle that fine.
02:05But but that's just what happens.
02:06So but on the on the prosecutors, you have an obligation to uphold the law and enforce the law.
02:12And while an individual case, you know, there's judgment calls that can be made.
02:16You know, you can't have a policy that has the effect of kneecapping what the people have enacted through the legislature.
02:24Because that puts the public at risk.
02:25And we don't want to see that happen.
02:27And, you know, I was speaking to the sheriffs the other day.
02:31You know, we've seen in like California where you can go in and steal $950.
02:38And the threshold is a little higher than that.
02:40And they raise this threshold.
02:41So you see massive crime wave.
02:43You've seen jailbreak legislation in some of these states like none of that is going to work.
02:48I know I've obviously opposed that very strongly in terms of legislative,
02:53even though you've had people that have tried to do that in Florida.
02:57But you certainly can't do that through the back door.
03:00Like you didn't get the jailbreak legislation passed.
03:03You didn't get some of the California style policies enacted.
03:06So you're just going to do it anyways, unilaterally.
03:09No, that doesn't work.
03:10Governor, can we get your reaction on the ICE recruitment letter for our deputies and police officers that went out?
03:16So I haven't seen the letter, but apparently I sent out a recruitment letter to, you know,
03:24a lot of people that are 287G qualified that are working in local agencies in Florida
03:30and even some state agencies and are dangling like a lot of bonus money and all this other stuff.
03:36And I know some sheriffs have had concerns, you know, that that's happening.
03:40It's like, hey, we've been doing all this stuff to help you guys,
03:42and now you're trying to poach our people who are already in the fight.
03:46Why not recruit additional people to be supplementing that instead of just kind of displacing?
03:51So I know a lot of sheriffs have had concerns about it.
03:55I think maybe some police chiefs.
03:57So I would just say stay tuned on kind of them.
04:00I mean, that's really something that's going to impact them more than probably us at the state level.
04:05And I know that there's some sheriffs that have some strong feelings about it.
04:09Governor, I know you encouraged and required sheriffs to sign this 287G agreement
04:13and to get these deputies trained to have immigration enforcement authority.
04:18Now this is happening.
04:19What would you say to those law enforcement leaders that trusted you and the state to sign this agreement
04:23and now they're concerned about their deputies being poached?
04:27Well, I think that's the conundrum, right?
04:29Because we've gone above and beyond as a state.
04:32All these sheriffs' departments and many police departments have done these agreements.
04:36They have folks that have now been certified or in the process still of doing that.
04:41And that's been a huge help to ICE, right?
04:44Let's just be clear.
04:45That's been a huge benefit to those federal agencies.
04:49And so now if you're in a situation where those folks are being poached off of that mission,
04:54well, it's like, wait a minute.
04:55How is that?
04:56Why don't you bring in new people to supplement the mission going forward?
05:00So I understand the concern.
05:02I mean, 100%.
05:03I think we've done the right thing.
05:04I think we want to continue doing what we're doing.
05:07But, you know, sheriffs losing deputies who are in this fight to just go to a different,
05:15wear a different jersey basically but still be in the fight,
05:18that doesn't necessarily add to what we're doing.
05:21It's just moving someone over.
05:23And so I think there is frustration from that.
05:25And so we'll see.
05:27But you're going to continue to hear folks talk about this.
05:30I know when that letter hit, I heard a lot of static coming out of our sheriff's departments about that.
05:37And I told them, I said, listen, you know, you guys got to defend your agencies and your people.
05:41I mean, you say fight for what you think is right.
05:44I mean, this isn't my policy.
05:45It's coming down from ICE.
05:48And so by all means, speak up.
05:51Governor, on the back and forth with Orange County for the last week or so,
05:55one of the issues that they have brought up is that the transporting costs would be that they would have to pay it.
06:00In your view, should counties who participate?
06:02So if you look at the Florida, the bill that we got into law,
06:07there is money through our immigration folks where they can apply for reimbursement.
06:12So you do that likely through the sheriff, right, Larry, with the jail and transportation costs?
06:19Yes, sir.
06:19They can get it reimbursed.
06:20We can issue the grants and do that.
06:22So I would just tell them to do it.
06:23Yes, when I was doing this, you know, I had pushed back.
06:28Obviously, the Speaker of the House opposed what I was putting forth.
06:31And one of the things people were saying was, well, this is like an unfunded mandate.
06:35I was like, no, it's not going to be unfunded.
06:37We will have an ability for you to get resources.
06:40And so I think the detention, transport, I mean, that's something that would be appropriate to do.
06:45And I know we approved the guidelines for the grants to go out.
06:50And so I would just encourage to go talk to Larry, apply for that.
06:54But we want to get the funding out the door for the localities.
06:57I think that that's really important.
06:59I think that they'll use it well, and it'll enhance the mission.
07:04You mentioned that there were other sites that could be opened in addition to Alligator Alcatraz and Camp Blanding as future detention sites.
07:10Do you have your eye on anywhere in particular?
07:12Well, so Camp Blanding is up in northeast Florida.
07:14It does have an air, it has a runway.
07:18I don't know that it would be equivalent to Alligator Alcatraz because the runway is not as big.
07:24You may be able to move people right out of there, but you do have Cecil Field that's very close to that.
07:29So when we look at this, it's really what makes logistical sense.
07:33Again, I'm not creating the Four Seasons for illegal aliens.
07:37I'm not detaining just to detain.
07:39Like, that is not what we're doing it because there's a process involved for deport.
07:44Even the ones that have had the final order of removal, which is most of the people at Alligator Alcatraz, there still is some process that goes through that.
07:54So if it's detain, go through the process, and then be able to remove, that's something that we have an interest in being able to help facilitate to be able to increase those numbers.
08:04So I think Blanding would have the capacity to do a couple thousand.
08:08We initially were planning on just kind of opening that right away.
08:11But what I noticed as it was coming, DHS was sending people to South Florida, but we thought it would be a little bit more.
08:19And then we waited for the flight, and the flights have started.
08:22So we want to get a sense of that cadence, I think, because, yes, we're getting reimbursed for this.
08:27And so any of these people that are complaining about the money, the state's getting reimbursed.
08:32This is money that was actually going to paying for them to be in hotels in Manhattan.
08:38So I think most people would say it's better for this than for that.
08:42But that's a federal call.
08:43It's a policy decision that they've made.
08:46So you shouldn't really worry about that.
08:48But at the same time, you know, it's like to be doing this, if it's not leading to, you know, real, real significant cadence in removals, then I'm going to wait for that.
09:02Now, if I have confidence that it will, and I think it will eventually, once that happens, then we'll go.
09:07And so Kevin Guthrie's ready.
09:09I know that they did put out the bids for it.
09:11I don't think that they've awarded the bids because we want to make sure that we know kind of what's on the horizon.
09:18The cadence is picked up down in South Florida.
09:21But we want to make sure that we're doing that.
09:23And here's the thing.
09:24As the cadence picks up, your capacity effectively expands dramatically because people will be in for a short period of time, and then they go.
09:32So you can constantly backfill.
09:34So if you've got a couple thousand spots, you know, it's not like it's the static couple thousand people indefinitely.
09:41It's ideally would be you go in and then you get out pretty quickly.
09:44And that's our objective.
09:46And we remind people, you know, we do have options for you to short circuit that whole process if you're here illegally and simply go home on your own with a ticket.
09:58Now, you'll be escorted.
09:59You're going to make sure you get on the plane and there will be oversight.
10:01You're not going to be able to abscond.
10:03But you will be able to return to your home country without having to go through all this.
10:08You know, my view on it is, look, you know if you're here illegally, right?
10:12I mean, I'm not saying, like, everything government does, there's always flaws in it.
10:17And you can have a flaw here or there.
10:20It's possible that government could honestly believe someone committed some crime or is here illegally when it turns out.
10:27So that's why you have this process.
10:29But the reality is, is, you know, these people by and large are here illegally.
10:33There's not really much of a question on that.
10:35So if that's the case, you have an opportunity to kind of short circuit that whole process.
10:40And I think that that's better.
10:41That's one of the reasons you don't hear me.
10:43Like a lot of the narratives that get spewed about alligator Alcatraz, you know, are debunked.
10:48You know, Kevin Guthrie will go up and debunk them and he'll say, you know, this and that.
10:53And I can tell you, it's the only place I've seen where the staff eats the exact same food as the people, you know, that are there for detention and processing.
11:02That was not true.
11:03Like when I was in active duty, I was down at Gitmo.
11:05That was not true with Gitmo.
11:08It's not true with others.
11:09But it is true there.
11:10And so, you know, a lot of this stuff is just being put out because they're trying to create narratives just because that's what they want to do.
11:15And they do debunk it, but you don't hear me necessarily going out, you know, getting all sore about it just simply because, you know, those phony narratives, maybe they will have the intent, the effect of deterring people from going there and choosing this option.
11:32And if that's if that ends up having that effect and that's going to save, I think, taxpayers money, I think it'll be more efficient.
11:38It is what it is.
11:44But, yes, when they're complaining about, you know, the air conditioning being too cold or the subs not being toasted, and I'm just thinking to myself, I mean, what world do we live in that you can go to someone else's country illegally then demand toasted hoagies?
12:00I mean, like, it just doesn't work that way.
12:02I mean, I said last week when out there, you know, one of the most successful franchises, Jimmy John's, they didn't even have toasted until they do have them now.
12:10But for a long time, they didn't have any, and they did phenomenal, and they made many hundreds of millions of dollars.
12:16I mean, it's a very successful company.
12:18And, you know, my kids do like that.
12:21It's interesting.
12:21Like, as they, the one thing that my kids will acknowledge is, you know, their dad doesn't steer them wrong on trying new things.
12:28Like, I know kind of what they would like, and so they do like that, but they really do like these cheese steaks at Jersey Mike's.
12:35And so it's like, that is their thing.
12:37And the kids, well, I can get a big one for the whole, all three kids, and they kind of just go on doing it.
12:43But, I mean, but just seriously, like, those are complaints that are being made.
12:46And so I think a lot of it is transparently political.
12:50They're trying to create narratives.
12:52But, you know, it's like if some people think that, oh, my gosh, like, I'd rather not, okay, good, than take the plane ticket and go.
12:58I will say this, though.
13:00I mean, and this is not just true with what we're seeing in Florida with some of the stuff.
13:05I think it's true nationwide with some of these Democrats.
13:09Now, I know, like, you pretty much need a search warrant to fine a Democratic Party in Florida anymore with how poorly they've done.
13:16But, you know, it's fine.
13:19But put that aside.
13:21And I know they're not doing, I know they're not exactly lighting the world on fire nationwide either.
13:25But, you know, when I see it's like, you know, what really motivates you, right?
13:30I mean, so, like, you know, people ask me, like, AC, I'm obviously motivated by education, parents' rights, law and order.
13:39Fighting illegal immigration, fighting the woke, you know, paying down debt, you know, good budgeting, emergency.
13:48I mean, there's certain things that, like, you know, I really, really get passionate about.
13:52And the things that they are passionate about have nothing to do with Americans.
13:58They are very passionate about allowing people that have come to this country illegally to remain indefinitely and even running interference for criminal.
14:09Aliens.
14:10And so we have angel moms in Florida.
14:13I mentioned the Rep.
14:14Rep.
14:14Michaels.
14:16These Democrats have never done anything to show any type of sympathy with the victims of illegal immigration.
14:24They devote all their energy and attention to protesting people who are trying to solve the issue of illegal immigration.
14:32And I've just noticed that.
14:34I don't see them fighting for the citizens.
14:37I see them fighting for their own ideology.
14:40And their ideology is not effective or popular.
14:43And we may get a good glimpse of that if this guy gets elected mayor of New York City.
14:47I can tell you that.
14:48Not going to end up well if that happens.
14:51But, man, this is really what they care.
14:53They really care about an open border.
14:56They really want people to be able to not have consequences for coming into the country illegally.
15:04And I just think it's bizarre that that is something that they are so unbelievably passionate about.
15:10And it really is putting the people of this country last.
15:15And that's what they've continued to do in so many different things that they've embraced.
15:18Governor, before he signed up to the president at this point, the Orange County mayor said earlier this year, maybe he was worried about the safety of Orange County have to have an example of a facility saying that it was unsafe as we got.
15:34Removing criminal aliens is going to make you more safe.
15:38Of course it will.
15:39How many times do we want to see examples of illegal aliens released and then they go on to commit additional crimes?
15:49Those situations, if you're upset about transporting and you would rather just release, then any crime that happens is on you for doing that.
15:58So by getting them in custody, transport to ICE and then process for removal, you are absolutely saving lives and you are contributing to public safety.
16:10There is just no two ways about it.
16:13So releasing people, criminal aliens, does not work.
16:17We've seen how that happens in places like Los Angeles.
16:20You know, they've released people who had horrible records, who had been deported multiple times.
16:26They release them and then they end up committing some homicide.
16:31And it's like, you know, this could have been avoided.
16:35So I don't know how you would say that taking criminal aliens off the street is making Orange County less safe.
16:43I think it makes it a lot more safe.
16:45And I think that that's what people, you know, here deserve.
16:49They deserve safe communities.
16:50You know, it's obviously a place that that still attracts folks, not just for tourists, but also for some of the businesses.
16:58There's a lot of great, great things that are underway here in central Florida.
17:01I mean, I do.
17:03It seems to me, I mean, I think Epic Universe has been a big hit.
17:06I mean, I know I was impressed with what I saw.
17:08So, you know, there's just, there's a lot of good stuff, but you need public safety.
17:13And if you don't have public safety, you know, none of this is going to work.
17:16So, yes, relieving criminal aliens off the street is good policy.
17:20It is required policy in the state of Florida, probably more importantly than that.
17:25And we absolutely anticipate everybody that's going to be on the team to be able to ensure the rule of law.
17:32And, you know, the thing is, is people always have opportunities to talk to their reps, to try to change different types of legislation.
17:40If you don't like what the state's doing now, you're not going to get anywhere with me.
17:44But you can always try that.
17:46That's the way the system works.
17:47But we've done it the right way.
17:49The state's safer as a result.
17:51We've got a lot more work to do.
17:52I will tell you that.
17:53But I really thank everybody who's been part of this.
17:57They know that we've got their back.
17:59We are going to come back for more pay increases next year.
18:01We were happy with what we did.
18:03But we know we could have done more.
18:04You know, we had to fight.
18:06I mean, there was attempts to not only not do the pay increases by Florida Highway Patrol, but even defund some of their body armor and things like that.
18:15That was actually proposed by the leadership in the Florida House.
18:17And I'm just like, what are we doing here?
18:20Like, who told you to do that?
18:22No voter elected you to do that.
18:24That's just kind of doing it just to try to create dissension within the ranks.
18:28And so we were able to get in a better spot.
18:30But I'm proud of the success of that.
18:33And I know it'll be meaningful for these troopers.
18:35But we're not done yet.
18:36So stay tuned.
18:37Thanks, everybody.
18:38All right.
18:41Governor DeSantis speaking earlier today.
18:43And it's wrapping up right as we are getting off the air.
18:46I'm Austin Westfall.
18:47Thank you all for hanging out with us on your Friday night.
18:51Half hour to midnight for those of you on the East Coast.
18:54I'll be on the desk here tomorrow afternoon.
18:57I'll be on from 2 to 6 p.m. Pacific time.
19:01I work in Pacific time here.
19:03If you do the math, that's, what, 5 to 9 p.m. Eastern time tomorrow.
19:07But my colleagues over in Orlando will be on the air much earlier than me.
19:11They begin their coverage at 8 a.m. Eastern time tomorrow.
19:14Again, I'm Austin Westfall.
19:16Thank you all for watching.
19:17For now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to send it to a commercial break.

19:56Have a good weekend.
20:26Have a good weekend.
