Tsunami waves hit Hawaii, Japan, U.S. and Canada west coasts
A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Russia has triggered tsunami waves in Hawaii as residents are urged to find higher ground.

00:00While one of the world's strongest earthquakes ever recorded has struck Russia's Far East,
00:05sending tsunami waves into Japan, Hawaii, and the U.S. and Canadian West Coast.
00:10But we need people to cooperate with each other. Right now the roads are full, people trying to
00:14move. We ask you to stay calm, cooperate, and get to high ground if at all possible where you are.
00:21Listen, if you are in a safe place, stay there, and if you're not, do something about it.
00:26The 8.8 magnitude quake causing five-foot surges in Hawaii, with California seeing waves more than
00:33a foot high. Experts warn the waves could travel as fast as a jet plane. Japan has told over two
00:40million residents to evacuate due to the surge. No substantial damage has been reported so far,
00:45but authorities are urging people to stay away from the shorelines and say the risk could last
00:51more than a day. The earthquake is tied for sixth-strongest ever recorded, alongside one
00:56in Chile in 2010 and one in Ecuador and Colombia back in 1906. British Columbians are being urged
01:05to stay away from coastal areas that remain under a tsunami advisory this morning. The district of
01:10Tofino on western Vancouver Island says beaches are closed. Tsunami waves of less than 30 centimeters
01:17washed up to the shore at Winter Harbor and Tofino. The advisory warns currents at beaches,
01:22harbors, and marinas may be especially dangerous today.
