00:00this would be three-foot wave riding across the top of the surf just I wanted
00:14to remind people this is not just like a wave comes off the shore three-foot
00:19waves smack stab smacks down on the beach this is a longitudinal wave with
00:24jerk with great force driving through the shoreline and into land that's why we
00:31ask people to evacuate very far back people ask if there was a generic way to
00:41describe how far you have to get away from the shoreline to be absolutely safe
00:45it's at least 4,000 feet that's the better part like that's four-fifths of a
00:51mile basically but that first wave will hit around 710 and it could take as
01:02long as 30 minutes for the waves is my understanding to hit other parts of the
01:06islands so we'll be able to give kind of constant updates about where the waves
01:09are as you can imagine there are going to be people out there communicating on
01:14social media again please just stay home
01:21this is about three feet okay but a wave of water that means it can move cars it
01:27will throw fences around if it hits it can dislodge trees that's why you just
01:32can't be out there the impact is at great speed any any structure that gets
01:38loose and strikes an individual could take them out and people can drown quite
01:41easily with the force of that kind of wave so again people have to really
01:46distinguish the waves we are accustomed to on the coast every day versus a tsunami
01:52it's a different beast altogether and of course if it gets much larger they do
01:58anticipate it could be larger that's why they have multiple measurements it's even
02:03more dangerous even more forceful houses will be damaged there will be
02:06debris all over the place if we do get a full tsunami
