00:00Bienvenidos a la HONK KONG FUTBALL FESTIVAL, la HIRBALGIE TROPHY.
00:15Open training session for Tottenham Hotspur FC.
00:18Very delighted to have the club back in Hong Kong,
00:21and especially delighted to have with us today Thomas Frank and Mickey Vandervan.
00:25With that said, I'm going to go straight to the room.
00:27Just a bit of quick housekeeping questions from the foreign Chinese.
00:31We'll reverse translate.
00:32Please, especially for local media and the wires out here,
00:35introduce yourself and your platform before you get started.
00:38So we'll go straight to the room.
00:39If there's any questions.
00:44Hi, Thomas Paul McNamara from South China Morning Post.
00:48This is relatively new for you, coming to Asia,
00:51coming overseas on a long-haul pre-season trip.
00:54So what's your view on these sorts of tours as a way to prepare for a season?
00:57I think the tours are good in many ways.
01:03The players, everyone, we're going to see,
01:05besides, of course, the hotel and the stadium and the airport,
01:07a little bit different culture.
01:09I think it's great for the club to come out here,
01:12for all of us to also experience the backing we have from fans across the world,
01:19and especially, of course, this part of the world here in Hong Kong, in Asia.
01:22So, yeah, I'm pleased.
01:25Just to follow up with one,
01:26do you see it as a chance to win new fans over here as well?
01:30I think that's, I think it's, we play for the fans.
01:34The more fans we can get, the better.
01:38So it's up to us to make sure we show it from the best side.
01:41Come down to them.
01:48Stephen is a commentator of EBI in mainland China.
01:53As former target, former transfer target,
01:56Gibbs-White, Sonny's extension with Forrest,
01:59do you think it's make a big chance Sonny will stay,
02:03and will we switch Sonny to the playmaker role more in the coming season?
02:09Who will stay, Sonny?
02:10Sonny.
02:10Now, Sonny's in me.
02:13Right now, Sonny's here.
02:16I'm very happy for that.
02:17He's training well.
02:19I said, you know, last press conference that he's showing, you know,
02:23great character.
02:24He played the last two friendlies.
02:27He's in the squad.
02:28He'll train today.
02:30So what I'm focusing on is he's a tournament player.
02:34Hi, Thomas.
02:35Jay from The Athletic.
02:37A slightly boring one.
02:38Can I just ask you for a fitness update on Destiny and Kota Takara?
02:40Who has stayed behind?
02:42Yes, you can.
02:44Kota got a plantar fascia injury.
02:48Unfortunately, I don't know exactly the scale of it.
02:52Weeks and Desk got a knee injury that we are assessing at the moment that just kept him out for this pre-season tour.
03:02And when we know more, we'll update more.
03:06Thank you.
03:06I've got one for Miki as well.
03:07Hi, Miki.
03:08I just wanted to ask what it's been like working on the Thomas for the first few weeks.
03:12And what was the first thing he said to you as a group?
03:14Yeah, it was really good.
03:17Yeah, the first couple of weeks were really good working on the new Gatha, of course.
03:21Thank you.
03:21You couldn't say anything different, could you?
03:25It was all I say now.
03:26So, no, no, no.
03:28It has been a really good few weeks.
03:30The first meeting I was not there because I was with a national team.
03:33But the Gatha just showed his vision to how he wanted us to play and how he wanted us to behave on and off the pitch.
03:39And that's the first thing that's really important to him.
03:41And that's the things that we're going to get into the group now.
03:45Hi, Thomas.
03:46Rob Guest from Football.London.
03:48Miki Moore is not part of the tour squad.
03:51Looks like he's going out and learned.
03:52Just how important is it this year that he gets that football?
03:56I think it's very important.
03:57I think Miki is a big talent.
04:00And I'm really excited about his future here at Tottenham.
04:05I think for all players, but especially at one stage, especially younger players,
04:09that need to get that first team consistent football into their body.
04:14So, if we can find the right option, we'll do that.
04:17And one for Miki as well.
04:19This season we've seen Luka Voskovic come in.
04:22Just how good is it from what you've seen on the training pitch and in the football games so far?
04:26Yeah, I think Luka is only 18 years old.
04:30And how you can see he behaves now on the pitch and off the pitch,
04:33then you can see that he's a really talented full player.
04:37That's a lot of qualities.
04:38And I think he's shown in the last two friendlies that he has a lot of big and strong points
04:43where we even, our biggest enemies, can learn from.
04:49Yeah, he's doing unbelievable at this point.
04:51And hopefully he can do way more for us.
04:52And hopefully you can also see way more from him.
04:56Hi Thomas.
04:56Alex Howell, BBC.
04:58You're playing your rivals on Thursday at Arsenal.
05:01Your first North London derby as manager.
05:03It's still pre-season, but how do you approach it?
05:05It's still going to be an important game for your supporters.
05:09Of course.
05:09I think it's a great challenge besides being our big rivals.
05:15And it's the first North London derby outside UK.
05:19It's also right now one of the best teams, we must say, unfortunately, in the world.
05:25We also need to be honest.
05:25So, in that way, it's a big test.
05:29But it's more than a test.
05:30That, you know, against Arsenal is not only a friendly, of course, in the game.
05:33We'll do everything we can to, yeah, to win.
05:39Hey, Thomas.
05:40Well, first things first, since we're in Hong Kong.
05:41Ni hao.
05:43Ni hao, Mickey.
05:44Ni hao.
05:45And secondly, the Tottenham fans seem to call you Thomas the Frank engine.
05:49I would just like to know your thoughts on a name.
05:50Do you like it?
05:51I think it's okay, yeah.
05:54Choo-choo?
05:55Yeah, that's okay.
05:55Yeah, that's fine for me.
05:56Yeah, and secondly, I'd like to ask, what positions are you looking to strengthen before the transfer window closes?
06:04That is something I would like to keep very private, of course.
06:07That's how you know it's a great question.
06:08Yeah, exactly.
06:09It's a very good question.
06:10Now, we, of course, we are down the market.
06:12We are aware where we maybe want to strengthen the squad in general.
06:19I'm happy with the squad.
06:20I think we've already done a top signing in Mohamed Kudas that is coming in and shown his quality already.
06:28And we've got a squad where I think there's a lot of talent in and quality.
06:33But, of course, we are looking.
06:34Sensational.
06:35One for Mickey as well.
06:36Your thoughts on the name Mickey van der Vengeance?
06:40I haven't heard of that one before, but...
06:42It's not bad, it's not bad.
06:43Yeah, and one more.
06:45What's the fastest player in the Premier League that you've come up against?
06:48Because we all know you're the flash, Barry Allen.
06:49You're the fastest player we've ever seen.
06:51What's the fastest player that you've come up against in the Premier League?
06:57It's a good question, though.
06:59I know Anthony Elanga from...
07:00He just signed for Newcastle.
07:02He's a really fast player.
07:04So I think I will put him up the list, yeah.
07:06So now he's gone.
07:07He's got the fastest player in the league again?
07:09He's still there, no?
07:12Okay, RTHK in the back.
07:14Luke from Radio Terrace in Hong Kong.
07:17So, Mickey, welcome to Hong Kong.
07:18So, is it the first time you come to Hong Kong?
07:21And what kind of words you want to tell the supporters in Hong Kong?
07:26And are you going to visit any places in Hong Kong?
07:29Yeah, I really...
07:33What I've seen now from Hong Kong is that I'm really enjoying it.
07:36The fans are also unbelievable.
07:38They are 24-7 in and outside the hotel waiting for us to walk by.
07:43The support is unreal over here.
07:45And what I've seen from the city now on was really good.
07:48And we can visit some places if we get some free time.
07:51Wow, I have to ask the Geper for that.
07:53And as a friend, just say, this is the first time the London Derby outside of the UK.
08:03So, do you feel pressure?
08:04Or what are your feelings about that?
08:09There's always a lot of pressure before games, of course.
08:11But I go into the game the same as I do if we play in London.
08:17But yeah, of course, the stadium will be full.
08:19And there will be a lot of fans from outside.
08:20So, hopefully, we can make them happy and give them a good game.
08:24Stay in the back there.
08:26Hello, I'm Chris Chan from Now TV.
08:28This one is for Thomas.
08:30You've got quite a number of wide attackers to choose from.
08:32You've got Odeberg, you've got Mathis Tell, you've got Richarlison,
08:36Brennan Johnson and Sonny Mean as well.
08:38How do you see them fit into your tactical plans?
08:42And what will you be looking for from the wide attackers in the coming matches?
08:45I think, first and foremost, it's important that we have some depth in the squad.
08:51But also, say, Richarlison, I see him more as a striker that also can play to the side.
08:57Sonny Willow can play both positions.
08:59I think Mathis Tell also is a winger, but also can play as a striker.
09:04You know, you need different skill sets.
09:07You need the perfect player.
09:09It's difficult to find.
09:11So, you need players that can run in behind.
09:13You need players that can go 1-1.
09:14You know, players that hopefully can score goals.
09:16That's a big part of it as well.
09:19Then you need players that also can press.
09:21So, some of them have in behind skills.
09:25Others are very good ball carriers.
09:26Others are very good pressing players.
09:29So, yeah, that's what I look for.
09:30Hi, Thomas.
09:33I'm Connor from Breaking Media.
09:35Hope you're good.
09:36After the Morgan Gives White saga, have you had any conversation with Daniel Levy about potential other people you're going to move to?
09:43Is that money ready to be spent elsewhere?
09:45In general, we are constantly talking about transfers.
09:50Of course, it's a transfer window.
09:53We're still in the market.
09:55We're still looking out there.
09:57So, yeah, we are.
10:00Okay, guys.
10:01Looks like we're drying up.
10:02Any others?
10:03Up to the front.
10:03Ready?
10:08Sorry, thank you.
10:09I'll just ask Nicky a couple more, if that's okay.
10:12You've got a set-piece coach in the club now, Andrea.
10:14So, I just wanted to ask, I know it's only been a couple of weeks, but what have you learned from him so far?
10:18And what has he been working with you guys with?
10:21We've been working a lot of, yeah, we have a lot of training sessions already where we've been working on set-pieces.
10:26I know you guys love talking about set-pieces in Tottenham, but hopefully we can change it this year and make it a strong point for us on the offensive and defensive side.
10:37Obviously, you had a few injuries last season.
10:39From your perspective, how important is it that you've got a full pre-season this summer where you can sort of build up that fitness?
10:45Yeah, I think that's important.
10:47Last year, of course, with the Euros, pre-season for me was not that long.
10:50I think I only had like one week or two weeks of training before the start of the Premier League.
10:55So, it's really good I have these training weeks and I can do all these sessions and build up my strength and physical strength also for the season.
11:04Yeah, and I think that's hopefully going to help me this year.
11:07All right.
11:08Daniel Vicks from AFP News Agency.
11:11Just following on from that, Nicky, I mean, obviously, it was a difficult season for yourself.
11:14Personally, with injuries.
11:17Are you finding that you're approaching this pre-season a little differently in order to try and prevent that happening again?
11:25And, Thomas, it was a problem for the squad as a whole last year and a lot of injuries.
11:31Are you looking at that as something to improve this season?
11:35Mickey first, I guess.
11:37Yeah.
11:39No, I don't approach this pre-season different compared to what I said.
11:43Like, I didn't really have a pre-season at Tottenham before because two years ago I came after the pre-season and last season I had Euro.
11:51So, there was enough, yeah.
11:52So, I was not there.
11:54But I don't approach it differently.
11:56Of course, it's more time to work on my body and to make my body prepare for the Premier League and for the Champions League and for all the other games that are coming up.
12:03So, I would say, yeah, that's a positive thing where I can work more on my own.
12:07I think, of course, I'm aware of the injury situation last year in Tottenham.
12:15And, I think, I think, I think it's a big thing for any club in the world.
12:22Availability is key.
12:24If you have availability close to 100%, which is difficult for all your top players also because more and more games, the intensity in the games are going up.
12:33But, a couple of things, the good thing is we have a good and long pre-season.
12:40That means it's possible to push and pull the players.
12:44We are very aware how we want to play, how we want to train.
12:48And, I think that it needs to be completely aligned with the style of play with the physical output in terms of how we also want to train it.
12:56So, we make sure we get the players to be robust enough.
12:59There is, of course, the gym sessions.
13:02There is the recovery, which is equally important.
13:06And, then, there is that ability to be able to compete in all the tournaments.
13:12But, we are aware and we have a few adjustments.
13:15Hopefully, we will be successful with that.
13:19Hi, Thomas.
13:20Son Moly here.
13:22Let me ask you about Son.
13:24Last season, there was some saying that Son was staying outside too much.
13:30Maybe too much staying only outside in the wing.
13:35But, you said during today's press conference, both Charlie Son and Son can both play in the wing and central.
13:44So, do you have any plan or idea about using Son in the central position?
13:50Or, do you have any new plan for Son this season, this season?
13:54I think everyone knows that Son has been one of the best players at Tottenham in the last ten years.
14:00I think he's been hugely successful from the left wing.
14:04I also think he had some fantastic games down the middle as a number nine.
14:08So, it's important to have flexible players that can play more positions.
14:12And it's about having your best players on the pitch and available.
14:16So, the thing about Son is that he always scores goals and he will always score goals.
14:22So, it's just about to get him in those situations.
14:24Okay, let me ask you one question about Nicky.
14:29On the final of Europa League, your save was the most important moment of the game, I believe.
14:37And the moment gave you kind of confidence for the new season.
14:42And how do you feel about the new season after that moment?
14:45Yeah, that was a really nice moment, of course.
14:49A moment I won't ever forget.
14:53Yeah, of course it gives you confidence.
14:55I think not only for me, but also for the team overall that you win at the end of the Europa League.
15:01What gave us confidence for this season?
15:04Last season has been tough for us.
15:05And then if you can end it up with winning a trophy after a long time, that's a positive thing.
15:10And, yeah, to bring that into this season, yeah, that can help us a lot, yeah.
15:16Okay, ladies and gentlemen, that's it for today.
15:18Thank you very much for your time, both of you.
15:20Good luck this week.
15:21And we'll see you out at the Open Training in about one hour.
