Mariners vs. Athletics Game Highlights (7_28_25) MLB Highlights - MLB
Transcript
00:00I think that J.P. Sears should he be able to do what he did last time around and that's bounce back. I think he'll be in a great spot. His last outing came against Texas. Five solid innings. Julio sitting on 98 career home runs. He was homeward seven times in the last 13 games.
00:20Swung on a miss and down he goes on a fastball and that's the way our ball game begins. Lidoff Matt sat down in front of Cal Raleigh. 41 home runs now for the Mariners catcher. Tied for the most by a switch hitting catcher in a single season ever. He has homeward and back-to-back games coming into tonight.
00:36One-two pitch. Sears strikes out Raleigh. Back-to-back Kays. Got him on the fastball up top. Two away. Another strikeout for Sears. A guy who strikes out a ton but he has punched the first two tickets of the ball game tonight. Luis Castillo making his first start against the Athletics since his first start of the season. Coming off a bit of a tough one back on the homestand against Milwaukee. Six runs. Half of them earned over five innings. Lawrence at 235. 15 homers. 44 RBIs. Had two homers on the road trip.
01:062-2. Line drive. Base hit. Lidoff single for Butler. Butler just reaching out and serving the ball over the head of the second baseman Polanco. And the A's have a start in the bottom of the first and here is Mr. Kurtz. Fans wrapping their arms around Nick Kurtz. Well the numbers go on and on. If we can talk for the next two hours about Kurtz and his exploits. Swing and it's popped up. Left side of the infield. Now going back shallow left field as the wind takes it. Randy Rosarena comes in.
01:36And he's there to make the catch. Brent had eight hits on the road trip including two doubles. A triple. A home run. Three RBIs. Butler takes off. Cal's throw. It's on the money. Tag dropped down by Polanco. And Butler is out. Now Raleigh cuts him down at second base. Nifty swim move. And Polanco really had to work to get that tag down. And went a long way to do it.
01:58Just the fifth time Butler's been caught. He swiped 17 bases this year. Well that was pretty quick work. Brent Rooker. You know with that caught stealing. Castillo ends up facing the minimum.
02:08After a quick one-two-three first. Now he'll face the newest Mariners face.
02:12Josh Naylor wallops this out to right field. Way back to the bourbon guard.
02:18Josh Naylor's first home run as a Mariner. Gives them the early lead.
02:22Going and going and goodbye baseball. His 12th home run of the year. He had 11 prior to the trade.
02:31He was absolutely hunting that slider from Sears. He's like what is this thing? What do I do with it? I carry it down the line. Somebody take this from me.
02:41And now the Mariners have the basin loaded with one out here in the top half of inning number two.
02:47And a chance to do some damage here.
02:48With what are now a couple back-to-back free passes here.
02:51One that probably should have gone the way of J.P. Sears.
02:53Probably should have two outs right now.
02:55Earl Scott Emerson on his way out right now.
02:57And I think part of this is probably just to settle down J.P. Sears.
03:0126 pitch inning.
03:02And counting. Just one out.
03:05Bouncing ball to second.
03:06Urias to Shulman. Shulman to first.
03:08And a 4-6-3 double play.
03:11Sears gets out of it.
03:13And hugely needed by the green and gold that ends the inning.
03:17The Mariners get one. They leave two.
03:19And after one and a half, it's 1-0 Seattle.
03:22As Cal Raleigh is at the plate.
03:24Actually is riding a seven-game hitting streak into this game.
03:28His career-high is nine. Here's the pitch to him.
03:30That swung on and foul tipped into the glove of Langleyers.
03:32Down he goes. He strikes out Raleigh.
03:34It's the fourth strikeout for Sears.
03:37Two away in the third.
03:38That'll bring up the left fielder, Randia Rosarena.
03:40It is swung on and fouled down the right field line.
03:43Slicing on Carlos Cortez.
03:45And that will actually go back into fair territory.
03:48And Cortez makes the catch. Wow.
03:50Again, Bermuda's triangle down there.
03:52Looked like it was slicing into foul territory.
03:55And it came back into the field.
03:56Playing great job by Carlos Cortez to stick with it.
03:59He hasn't played in this ballpark before tonight.
04:01What a play by Cortez. Wow.
04:03Naylor now an eight-game hitting streak.
04:05Dating back to before he was acquired by the Mariners.
04:07This is his fourth game.
04:09Hit hard. A one-skipper into right field.
04:11Multi-hit day.
04:12Josh Naylor.
04:13He has just been hitting since coming over to the Mariners.
04:15And, of course, even before that.
04:16First multi-hit game as a Mariner.
04:18Naylor.
04:19A big jump.
04:19Throw to Kurtz.
04:20Kurtz skies it on a line into left field.
04:23And Naylor gets into third base.
04:26And Naylor, who stole two bases yesterday, gets his fourth bag already as a Mariner.
04:33And Kurtz frustrated with himself.
04:34Look at where Naylor is.
04:36He knows that Kurtz is going to be throwing to that inside part of the bag.
04:41Because the first baseman where he's playing, that is where he's throwing to second base.
04:45He's not throwing across the runner.
04:47So, one away here in the fourth inning.
04:49And here is Mitch Garber.
04:50Over the last seven games, the Mariners' batting average with runners in scoring position begins with a zero.
04:55Garber, fly ball.
04:57This seems plenty deep.
04:58Butler gets chased back out of the warning track.
05:01And makes the catch.
05:02Naylor trots home.
05:04Exactly what the Mariners were hoping for.
05:06A little situational hitting.
05:07They take advantage of an error.
05:09And a sack fly by Mitch Garber.
05:112-0 lead.
05:12It has been smooth sailing for Castillo here tonight.
05:15Kurtz going to lead things off for the A's in the fourth.
05:18Swung on.
05:19A little pop-up short center field.
05:20Dillon Moore back.
05:21He's there.
05:22He makes a catch.
05:23And he's out.
05:24So, Kurtz is 0-2.
05:25And that's saying something.
05:27Oh, a diving catch.
05:30Williamson lays out.
05:32And takes the hit away from Brent Rooker.
05:34It's hard to see his cape.
05:36But look at this.
05:37Superman laying out for this line drive.
05:40And Williamson will lead things off.
05:42Mariners a run and the second on a Josh Naylor home run.
05:45And then Naylor created the second run as well in the fourth.
05:48This is into left field fair.
05:51Skims into the corner.
05:52Extra bases for Ben Williamson as he stands up with a double.
05:56So, that right-handed slug against Sears continues to climb.
06:00So, here's Cal.
06:010-2 on the night.
06:02But with 41 home runs, more home runs than anybody, and 86 runs batted in, that leads
06:08the American League.
06:09Line.
06:10Left field base hit.
06:11Williamson full steam ahead.
06:13Hits third on his way home.
06:15The throw to the plate.
06:16Headlong slide.
06:17He's safe.
06:18Cal Raleigh, an RBI base hit in the left field.
06:20It's 3-0.
06:22Williamson with a headfirst slide.
06:23Scores from second.
06:25And it's now the Mariners 3.
06:26And the A's nothing.
06:27And here comes manager Barkatze, and that's going to be it for Sears tonight.
06:32So, Cal Raleigh with his 87th run batted in this year.
06:36What a year for Cal.
06:37Cortez is 5-for-15 in the big leagues this year.
06:40He was 4-for-10 in the Houston series.
06:43The 3-2 lifted to left center field.
06:45Julio on the run.
06:46He's closing the gap.
06:47It gets down.
06:48And off the wall.
06:50Cortez can run for a line.
06:52He pushes for third.
06:53It's bottled.
06:54Imar's going to load him up at third base.
06:56Oh, how crazy could that have been?
07:00Well, Chris, off the bat, you knew it was going to be trouble.
07:03That ball was barreled, and it continued to work its way away from Julio Rodriguez.
07:09Set a runner at third for the first time for the A's tonight.
07:12And that will bring up Max Schumann.
07:14Schumann ground ball.
07:15Williamson, a little snow cone on that ground ball.
07:18They work around that triple from Cortez.
07:20They strand him 90 feet away.
07:22Five scoreless in the bank from Luis Castillo.
07:25And that got a piece of Urias, so he will lead off the inning as baseball got a piece of him.
07:31And here's the big Amish.
07:33Entering tonight in the last 21 games here, Kurtz had 13 home runs at the home ballpark.
07:393-2.
07:40Hammer in the alley at right center field.
07:42That's going to roll for a while.
07:44Urias will take third.
07:45Kurtz settles for a long single.
07:47And the A's have him posted on the corners.
07:50Well, that will extend the hitting streak.
07:52Now 14 games for the big Amish.
07:55Now the Athletics here.
07:56Runners on the corners.
07:58Just one out.
07:59It's going to be Brent Rooker at the dish.
08:01The pitch to Brent.
08:02Grounded.
08:03Backhanded by Williamson.
08:04Throws to second.
08:05And what a nice play.
08:07Back on a few hops, he gets it to Polanco.
08:10But the A's do get on the board with an RBI ground out from Rooker.
08:14Ben Williamson falling down.
08:16Skips some stones to second.
08:18And a huge second out of the sixth inning.
08:20A wave and a miss on a slider.
08:23And another time zone from Luis Castillo.
08:26And that's the fourth strikeout for Luis Castillo.
08:30A's get a run, but no more.
08:32So now the A's have the bases loaded with two outs.
08:36Well, now you've got your shot.
08:38It's all you could ask for.
08:40Langan layers is on at first.
08:42The tying run.
08:43Rooker is on at second.
08:44And Thomas is over at third.
08:47These two old rivals in the American League battling in a tough ballgame in West Sacramento
08:53on this Monday night.
08:54So there is no room for Soderstrom.
08:56The A's have the bases loaded with two outs.
08:59Pits of the way.
08:59Swing and a ground ball to third.
09:01Diving stop by Williamson.
09:02Gets to the bag at third.
09:04For the force on Rooker coming down the line.
09:07And Ben Williamson saves the day again.
09:11And the Athletics leave the bases loaded.
09:14Ben Williamson has saved about four runs in this game.
09:17And that will retire the side.
09:20Holy smokes.
09:21What a night for Ben Williamson.
09:24Mariners leading 3-1 as the A's are down to their final three outs.
09:29Trailing by two.
09:30Andres Munoz.
09:31Mariners two-time all-star closer.
09:32Is on the mound to work the bottom of the ninth inning.
09:35Broken back ground ball.
09:37To second.
09:38To first.
09:39Double play.
09:41He's in play.
09:42Williamson's made all night.
09:43So Ben Williamson has been all over the map in this game defensively with his glove.
09:49Here's Max Schumann.
09:50And now the A's are down to their final out.
09:53And there it is.
09:5498 up in the attic from Munoz.
09:56He slams the door in the ninth inning.
09:58And the Mariners take game one 3-1.
10:01And now the final score.
10:02And now the final score.
