00:00Some guy yells out,
00:02Get your hair cut!
00:04The mix says, and I'll never forget these words,
00:07Martin, look like you!
00:09Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:11and today we're counting down our picks
00:12for the most hilarious highlights that occurred on a talk show.
00:15If it's got Carrot Top in it, you know what a good name for it'd be?
00:18What's that, Norm?
00:19Box office poison!
00:23Number 20.
00:24Steve Martin Almost Leaves,
00:26The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
00:28This comedian is always guaranteed to make people laugh
00:31when he's a guest on a talk show.
00:32I understand that you have to leave,
00:34you have to be somewhere this evening and go...
00:36I have to rehearse.
00:39For this 1978 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,
00:44Steve Martin leaves the interview early for an apparent rehearsal.
00:47The actor tries to sound impressive like other celebrities,
00:50but it all ends up being a setup.
00:52Martin comes back with his best crying routine in a hilarious twist.
00:58Carson clearly loves the entire bit,
01:07playing along with his guest's amusing antics.
01:10It's especially funny to watch a grown man start acting like a child that needs to be consoled.
01:14I see all the big stars come on, they always have to leave.
01:18I just thought I'd say I had to leave, but I don't have to leave.
01:23Number 19.
01:26Tom Holland Dances for Madonna,
01:28The Graham Norton Show.
01:29Even famous actors have trouble talking with other celebrities,
01:32as this 2018 Graham Norton clip shows.
01:35And I was at this party with a couple of my friends,
01:39and an old friend of mine, who's a manager, comes up to me,
01:44and he's like,
01:44Tom, Tom, Tom, do you know Madonna?
01:47And I'm like,
01:48funnily enough, no.
01:51When Tom Holland describes an exchange with Madonna,
01:54he mentions an awkward situation at a nightclub.
01:57To top it all off,
01:58the actor's friend told the singer that Holland could dance well.
02:00This absurd event sounds like a nightmare,
02:03as Holland describes his unimpressive moves.
02:06And Jason can see me panicking,
02:08and goes,
02:09Madonna, um, Tom is an incredible dancer.
02:13Why?
02:14And I'm looking at him like,
02:15I'ma kill you.
02:17And she goes,
02:18really?
02:19Well, that's something I'd love to see.
02:21Show me.
02:21Despite our second-hand embarrassment,
02:23we can't help but laugh along as he also discusses his quick exit.
02:27The only thing missing is an actual demonstration
02:30of his dance performance.
02:31The Spider-Man star could not be more relatable here,
02:34entertaining us with his ridiculous and horrifying tale.
02:37The next day,
02:38I'm telling my family on FaceTime,
02:40who's having a family dinner,
02:42about my evening and the Oscars.
02:43They wanted to know all the goss.
02:44And I end up telling them this story.
02:46My dad is wetting himself.
02:48My mom is cringing.
02:49And then my little brother Paddy goes,
02:51who's Madonna?
02:52Number 18.
02:56Dick Cavett tells off Norman Mailer.
02:58The Dick Cavett Show.
02:59Welcoming two rivals to his talk program,
03:02Dick Cavett presided over a war of words
03:04between Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer.
03:06Gore, you can afford to be fond of me
03:08because you said the scarless things about me.
03:10What did I say about you that was so scarless?
03:12I attacked your piece.
03:13No, no, no, don't bring up everything.
03:14No, we'll just bring a little bit.
03:17The latter guest is so testy
03:19that he also goes after the host,
03:21having already taken verbal shots at the others.
03:23This exchange then prompts one of Cavett's funniest lines.
03:26Why don't you fold it five ways
03:28and put it where the moon don't shine?
03:29The clever comeback is especially memorable,
03:36leaving Mailer momentarily speechless.
03:38You'll either be laughing or cheering
03:40along with the audience after Cavett's response.
03:43With a killer ad-lib,
03:44the host course-corrects this interview
03:46and gives the angry author a taste of his own medicine.
03:49Are you really all truly idiots or is it me?
03:53Oh, that was the easy answer.
03:57Come on.
03:58Number 17.
04:00Kicking Flavor Flav,
04:01The Eric Andre Show.
04:03You never know what to expect
04:04on this Adult Swim program.
04:06Eric Andre keeps public enemies Flavor Flav on his toes,
04:09reminding everyone of his reputation
04:10for bizarre and gross-out humor.
04:13Ladies and gentlemen,
04:15civil rights leader Flavor Flav!
04:19Wow!
04:20It all builds up until the confused guest
04:22endures the wrath of Hannibal Buress.
04:25The sidekick throws a kick
04:26that ends the segment in style.
04:28Show sucks, man.
04:29Yeah, man.
04:30Yeah.
04:31You got any?
04:32While it might be doctored for a fact,
04:35the wild moment isn't any less funny.
04:37Andre and Buress' unique brand of hospitality
04:39is perfectly exemplified here.
04:42The sound effects and editing
04:43only make this more effective,
04:45giving the show its trademark surrealism.
04:47All right, I'm done serious to you.
04:49I'm gonna punch you in your f***ing face, fam.
04:51Number 16.
04:52Andy Kaufman Panhandles in the Audience,
04:54The David Letterman Show.
04:56Combining performance art and comedy,
04:58Andy Kaufman was a singular performer in every way.
05:01They're, I'm not doing much special right now.
05:05No, but, um, this is, you know,
05:09I'm once in a while making appearances,
05:11like, on this show.
05:12Yeah.
05:12Yeah, I know you're probably gonna do movies.
05:15Hopefully.
05:16I hope.
05:17This 1980 appearance of him
05:19on The David Letterman Show
05:20is an excellent example of his unique style
05:22and ability to let awkward comedy intensify.
05:25Coughing and staring,
05:27Kaufman tells an extended tale
05:28about his personal and financial setbacks.
05:31Saturday Night Live,
05:32it just discovered me.
05:38I'm not, I'd rather,
05:39if you don't, uh, laugh,
05:44because, um,
05:45I'm not trying to be funny right now.
05:48This all leads up to the Darkly comic conclusion
05:51where he asks the audience for money.
05:53Not only does he have the audacity to beg for money,
05:56he also enters the crowd to panhandle.
05:59It's gleefully absurd,
06:00yet disturbing in a way
06:01that only this comedian could pull off.
06:05So anyway, um,
06:07if anybody could,
06:09I know this sounds like a cliche,
06:11but, uh,
06:13if you could earn you extra money,
06:15I would appreciate it.
06:17Not everybody loves roller coasters.
06:34Kevin Hart definitely falls into that category,
06:37very reluctantly joining Jimmy Fallon
06:39for this 2014 segment.
06:40The two of them strap into the front seat of a coaster.
06:50Fallon jokes with Hart
06:51as the two prepare to drop,
06:53with the latter comedian ready to scream.
06:56The guest loses it
06:57as the ride throws him
06:58for a few surprising dips and turns.
07:00The Jumanji star then freaks out
07:01throughout the experience.
07:02If you remember waiting for your first big ride,
07:15this will bring back that worried feeling
07:17with some major laughs.
07:18If the first round isn't enough,
07:20the two keep riding in a shocking climax
07:22that rivals their journey into a haunted house.
07:25Number 14.
07:39The Fly, The Graham Norton Show
07:41During this episode of The British Show,
07:43three comedic guests make the most
07:45of an unexpected situation.
07:46An insect starts buzzing around the couch,
07:49inspiring Steve Carell
07:50to reveal his fly-swatting technique.
07:52I know if it landed here,
07:54what you do
07:54is you go,
07:55oh, get it over here.
07:57Because you put it there
07:58and you go,
07:58because the fly
08:00feels the pressure of the air
08:01coming from either side.
08:03So you trick it
08:04and you go
08:05and you get it every time.
08:07Clever murder.
08:09Later in the interview,
08:10Chris O'Dowd takes a sip of his drink
08:12only to find a surprise inside.
08:15It's such a chaotic turn of events
08:16that you'd almost think it was scripted.
08:18Now listen.
08:19Oh!
08:20Oh my God!
08:23Did you just drink the fly?
08:29If you aren't completely grossed out
08:31like Kristen Wiig,
08:33you'll be laughing along with everyone else.
08:35O'Dowd's play-by-play
08:36turns the hilarious moment
08:37into a dramatic and engaging story.
08:40At the end,
08:41he drops the fly on the table
08:42and his fellow guests
08:43even hold an impromptu funeral.
08:46Oh, let's see, let's see.
08:47Okay, are you ready, Steve?
08:48Are you ready?
08:48Oh!
08:50No!
09:04Even though his run was short-lived,
09:10Conan O'Brien had lots of fun
09:11during his time on The Tonight Show.
09:13This included jokes about spending NBC's money
09:15to do whatever he wanted.
09:17We can pretty much do whatever we want
09:20and this is the best part.
09:24We can do whatever we want
09:25and they have to pay for it.
09:29Taking this premise to the max,
09:31O'Brien reveals all of the outrageous purchases
09:33the program made,
09:34including a Bugatti dressed as a mouse.
09:36It's all played for laughs in a monologue
09:38at the network's literal expense.
09:40Say hello to our new Tonight Show character,
09:43the Bugatti Veyron Mouse.
09:45For those that didn't approve
09:51of NBC's treatment of the comedian,
09:53this feels like the best kind of comedic revenge.
09:55You can tell Conan is truly embracing the comedy
09:58that comes from not having to care anymore.
10:00That's right, ladies and gentlemen.
10:03Total price tag for this comedy bit,
10:06$1.5 million.
10:10Sorry, NBC.
10:12Number 12.
10:13Tom Cruise makes James Corden skydive.
10:16The Late Late Show with James Corden.
10:18After Tom Cruise challenged him to jump out of a plane,
10:21James Corden reluctantly took the actor up on his offer.
10:24You are here.
10:25I'm here.
10:25You're here.
10:26You made it.
10:26I'm here and I'm terrified.
10:28Are we genuinely doing this?
10:30I'm just amazed you're here.
10:31This created one of the more memorable moments
10:33from The Late Late Show in this 2018 episode.
10:36During a tense buildup,
10:38Cruise tries to prepare the host with some rigorous training.
10:40Their odd couple chemistry keeps this whole segment funny
10:43until the big jump.
10:45Corden is clearly scared out of his mind
10:47and his guest is easygoing during the flight.
10:49Next time we come on the show,
10:51let's just do a chat.
10:52We'll do a chat segment at the desk.
10:55Play a clip.
10:56That's it.
10:57That's what we'll do, okay?
10:58It's gonna be okay.
10:59Chances are,
11:01we're gonna make it.
11:02As the host jumps,
11:05you can tell he's more than terrified,
11:07ultimately making for some incredibly entertaining television.
11:11Oh, s**t!
11:14Over!
11:19Number 11.
11:21Zack questions President Obama's legacy.
11:23Between two ferns with Zack Galifianakis.
11:26On this offbeat talk show,
11:28the host interrogates people next to the titular plants.
11:30I mean, I have to say,
11:32when I heard that,
11:33like, people actually watch this show,
11:35I was actually pretty surprised.
11:38Hi.
11:38Welcome to another edition of Between Two Ferns.
11:40I'm your host, Zack Galifianakis.
11:42One of his most memorable moments came in 2014
11:45when he welcomed President Barack Obama.
11:47The fact that he's interviewing a head of state
11:49does not faze the host or prompt him to hold back.
11:53Galifianakis asks a funny and pointed joke
11:55about Obama's legacy as a black president.
11:57I have to know,
11:58what is it like to be the last black president?
12:00Seriously?
12:02The line itself is bold and hilarious,
12:04but it also inspires a fantastic comeback from Obama.
12:08What's it like for this to be the last time
12:10you ever talked to a president?
12:11In this unforgettable moment,
12:13Between Two Ferns shows that even a powerful politician
12:16can make fun of themselves on such a comedic program.
12:19Number 10.
12:19Dave teaches a life lesson.
12:21Late night with David Letterman.
12:23During his initial late night run,
12:25David Letterman proved that he was a subversive host
12:27with many comedic talents.
12:29When NBC offered me a chance to star
12:31in an after-school special aimed at this age group,
12:33I was ecstatic, of course.
12:34And while the program was aired last month
12:36and received so much critical acclaim,
12:38we decided it was well worth repeating tonight.
12:42This particular short from 1983
12:44showcases his ability to parody after-school specials.
12:47He advises a younger boy
12:49that's just had his favorite program canceled,
12:50showing that there's hope
12:52even after losing something you love.
12:54Uh, Jimmy,
12:56what do you say we go for a little walk, all right?
13:00What about my show?
13:01Well, we can talk about that outside, okay?
13:05Okay.
13:06It's a well-written idea that mimics
13:08the popular and overdramatic format
13:10of many educational videos.
13:12Letterman's pitch-perfect performance
13:14reveals that he can act just as well as he can host.
13:17The self-serious tone makes the premise funnier,
13:19mocking the plight of canceled TV series.
13:22Just because a show is canceled
13:24doesn't mean it goes away forever.
13:28It can live on through reruns, syndication.
13:32You mean I might see Voyagers again?
13:35Well, yeah, maybe in some form or another.
13:39Number 9.
13:40Nathan Fielder's staged story,
13:42Jimmy Kimmel Live.
13:44Nathan Fielder is considered by many
13:45to have one of the best and brightest comic minds
13:48of his generation.
13:49In this 2017 Jimmy Kimmel appearance,
13:52the comedian proves he can deliver
13:54on an extensive and mind-bending premise.
13:56Someone had the identical bag to me,
13:58and I took it.
13:59And it's a big problem because, like,
14:01my suit for the wedding was in my bag,
14:05and I'm literally in shorts and a T-shirt.
14:07Okay.
14:08He tells a dramatic story about a luggage mix-up,
14:11a mysterious baggie, and a police stop.
14:12A cop pulls me over at this point.
14:16And, uh, I, you know, he comes up to the door
14:19and asks for my license registration,
14:20and it's like, I'm super nervous.
14:22These moments are super tense.
14:24And as, like, a comedian,
14:25my instinct is to diffuse the situation with a joke.
14:29Right.
14:30So I say, like, uh, you know,
14:32I'm just thinking off the top of my head,
14:33but I was like, uh, thank God you're not the fashion police,
14:37or I'd be in big trouble right now.
14:39It all sounds so detailed and naturally funny,
14:42but Fielder is harboring a secret.
14:44He actually orchestrated all of the events
14:47in an elaborate prank.
14:48This resulted in him being able to tell an exciting anecdote
14:51and not have to lie about it.
14:53Both shocking you and making you laugh,
14:55the guest completely pulls the rug out
14:57from under your expectations.
14:59And so I say to him, I'm like,
15:02what did he say was in the baggie?
15:06And he said, it's his mother's ashes.
15:09Oh!
15:14Number eight.
15:15Dennis Quaid is here.
15:16The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
15:18When her show sets up a hidden camera in a coffee shop,
15:21Ellen DeGeneres enlists Dennis Quaid
15:22to have some fun in this 2008 episode.
15:25Okay, so a few days ago,
15:26we sent Dennis Quaid over to the Starbucks right here
15:28on the Warner Brothers lot,
15:30and I put a device in his ear so he could hear me,
15:33and we had hidden cameras,
15:34and no one in Starbucks knew what we were doing.
15:37The actor has to say whatever the host tells him,
15:40and the results are hilarious.
15:42Quaid's opening line in particular sells the entire bit
15:45as he makes a grand introduction.
15:47Willing to make fun of himself,
15:48the guest delivers a goofy line
15:50that sets up a funny exchange inside the coffee shop.
15:52This continues as the actor orders
16:05and interacts with the unsuspecting people inside.
16:08It also shows that Quaid has a natural comic presence,
16:11taking each of DeGeneres' prompts in stride.
16:13Rob Reiner was technically the main guest
16:27on this 1985 Late Night with David Letterman episode,
16:29but it was his friend and fellow comedian Albert Brooks
16:32that stole the show.
16:33Nice man to talk to on the phone or off the phone.
16:35Those cheap kids turn blue doesn't mean she's pregnant.
16:38Hello?
16:42Albert?
16:43Yes?
16:44It's Rob.
16:44Letterman and Reiner call up Brooks
16:46for some laughs over the phone.
16:48The call-in guest offers up his variation
16:50of the stupid pet trick segment,
16:52but without the necessary visuals.
16:54Can I do it?
16:55It's not even a stupid pet trick.
16:56I can't move him.
16:58Hold on, David.
16:58I'm just going to bring my dog east
17:01and he doesn't want to fly,
17:03but can we do this here?
17:04Yeah, sure, Albert.
17:05Whatever you want.
17:06It's a hilarious subversion of the classic skit
17:08with the additional guest speaking for his own pet.
17:11Even when he's not in the same studio,
17:13Brooks can offer up a funny concept
17:15and get a big reaction.
17:17Can you hear that?
17:18Yeah, what's he doing, Albert?
17:19He's talking.
17:22Listen, who's your favorite host?
17:26David, what's he doing?
17:28Number 6.
17:30Sarah Silverman's Music Video Surprise
17:32Jimmy Kimmel Live
17:33On this 2008 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live,
17:36Sarah Silverman had a surprise for the host,
17:39who she was then romantically involved with.
17:41I've been thinking about you a lot
17:43and I've been needing to tell you something.
17:48I don't know why I haven't,
17:49but it's important.
17:50I mean, we've been together for so long,
17:52over five years,
17:53and I still haven't told you
17:55and it's just not right, so.
17:56The actress shows a music video
17:58that she made with the host's rival,
18:00Matt Damon.
18:01Not only did she write a song,
18:02she also claims to have had
18:04a relationship with Damon.
18:05This hilarious video entertains
18:07with fun choreography
18:08and high production values.
18:10I'm f***ing Matt Damon.
18:11She's f***ing Matt Damon.
18:13She's funny, buddy.
18:14She's funny.
18:15I'm funny.
18:16The only thing better than the surprise
18:19is Kimmel's stunned reaction afterwards,
18:21ratcheting up the tension of the fake feud.
18:23The conflict between Damon and Kimmel
18:25always provides maximum entertainment value.
18:29Oh, yeah.
18:31Well, congratulations.
18:35He was people's sexiest man of the year.
18:37You know what?
18:37We're gonna take a break right now
18:39and we'll be right back with Sarah Silverman.
18:41Number five.
18:42O'Brien vs. Colbert vs. Stewart.
18:45Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
18:47At one point in the 2000s,
18:49Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert,
18:50and Jon Stewart found themselves
18:52in a bitter feud over Mike Huckabee.
18:54If I see either one of these guys,
18:56I'm gonna kick some serious Comedy Central ass.
18:58Right, everybody?
18:59I mean, that's just what's gonna happen.
19:00Did someone order an ass kicking?
19:03In 2008,
19:04the Late Night with Conan O'Brien host
19:06was confronted on his show
19:07by the two Comedy Central comedians,
19:09leading to a hilarious and over-the-top fight
19:12spilling out into the hallways
19:13outside O'Brien's studio.
19:15Fans of pro wrestling
19:31will enjoy many of the moves on display here.
19:34There were also some spectacular falls
19:36down a flight of stairs,
19:37making a great skit that much more exciting.
19:40It's fair to say that there's never been
19:42a funnier or more impressive late-night brawl.
19:54Number 4.
19:55Nicole Kidman reveals her crush on Jimmy Fallon,
19:57The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
20:00I don't know if you remember this,
20:01but we met before.
20:02Oh, I remember.
20:04Do you remember this?
20:05It was really embarrassing for me.
20:06Yes.
20:07Welcoming Nicole Kidman to a show,
20:09Jimmy Fallon might have thought
20:10he would have a typical interview.
20:12This 2015 segment proved to be anything but ordinary
20:15after a shocking revelation.
20:17Kidman recounts a time she went to Fallon's apartment years ago,
20:20with the added announcement that she liked him.
20:22I just remember I liked you,
20:25and he was like,
20:26not now.
20:28I'm married now.
20:30But he was like,
20:31oh, well, you can leave.
20:32I mean, I don't.
20:33The presenter looks completely taken aback by the news
20:36before asking for further clarification.
20:39With his life flashing before his eyes,
20:41the comedian questions everything in a hilarious moment.
20:44The audience's reaction alone shows how much
20:47the TV personality fumbled the ball.
20:49It's both funny and somewhat relatable
20:50to hear both people realizing
20:52they completely misunderstood each other.
20:54You didn't say anything.
20:56You were like,
20:56hey,
20:56mm,
20:57mm,
20:57mm.
20:58Do you?
20:59I didn't say anything.
21:00I was very nervous.
21:01I didn't say,
21:02mm,
21:02mm.
21:02And I'm like,
21:02okay.
21:03I didn't know this was a thing.
21:05I thought this was a movie.
21:06It was meant to hang.
21:07It was meant to just,
21:08I don't know.
21:08And then you put a video game on or something.
21:11And I'm like,
21:12this is so bad.
21:15Number three,
21:16Norm Macdonald's spelling skills.
21:18Late night with Conan O'Brien.
21:20Norm Macdonald was one of the most enjoyable
21:22and chaotic guests on talk shows.
21:24This 1997 interview on late night
21:26with Conan O'Brien showcases the comic perfectly.
21:29You know,
21:29because before during the commercial,
21:31I was saying I had a huge crush on her.
21:33Yeah.
21:33And then you said you did too.
21:36It starts when Courtney Thorne-Smith
21:38mentions working with Carrot Top in a movie
21:40and inspires Macdonald to react.
21:42After a back and forth,
21:43the host sets up Macdonald to do what he does best.
21:46It all builds to the comedian
21:48offering up his own spelling
21:49for the film Chairman of the Board.
21:51Are you talking about Melrose Place?
21:56No, because I...
21:57You're the biggest ass I ever met.
22:01The guest's quick wit
22:02prompts one of the funniest comebacks
22:04in talk show history.
22:06This could have been an ordinary interview,
22:08but the Dirty Work star
22:09transforms it into comedic gold.
22:12Do something with that, you freak.
22:15Thanks.
22:17I bet the board is spelled B-O-R-E-D.
22:20Number two.
22:24Emma Stone shows off during a lip-sync battle.
22:27The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
22:29Many people have tried lip-syncing with Jimmy Fallon,
22:32but Emma Stone might be the best of them all.
22:34Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in,
22:36if you're into the ring,
22:36to the ring, to the ring, to the ring.
22:37Make it a spitting on the rocks, you win.
22:39And then begin to see what you're doing to me.
22:41Her song choices are surprising and undeniably funny,
22:45from Blues Traveler to DJ Khaled.
22:47Stone gives such a dedicated performance here,
22:49showing that she can bring the same intensity
22:51to lip-syncing that she brought
22:53to her Oscar-winning performances.
22:54All I do is win, win, win, no matter what.
22:58Got money on my mind, I can never get enough.
23:01You'll likely be as hypnotized as Fallon is
23:04while watching her.
23:05If you need another reminder of her talent,
23:07the actress blows everyone away
23:09with her imitation of Ludacris.
23:10She almost turns the concept of lip-syncing
23:13into an Olympic sport.
23:14Drawing laughs and amazed reactions.
23:24The ongoing segment is among Fallon's finest bits
23:27alongside his history of rap skits.

23:52No tribute to The Tonight Show
24:07starring Johnny Carson
24:07is complete without this segment.
24:09When Ed Ames and Carson try to throw axes,
24:11the former lands one in an unfortunate zone.
24:15The host milks the moment
24:16until he comes back with a hilarious one-liner.
24:18I didn't even know you were Dewey.
24:25With the initial surprise
24:27and the subsequent joke,
24:29this is the exact combination of events
24:31that make for great comedy.
24:33Considering how much more restrained
24:34TV was in 1965,
24:36it's amazing the sequence made it on the air.
24:39It's also a showcase
24:40of the presenter's perfect timing,
24:42proving that Carson knows how
24:43and when to offer up the perfect ad-lib.
