00:00Previously, 114 kilometres northwest of Melbourne in Dalesford, we pressed play on the 21st season of The Block.
00:11Oh my God.
00:14Holy...
00:15One by one, the team's arrived.
00:17Oh!
00:19Hailing from Victoria was civil engineer Ben and his wife, woodwork teacher and pole dancer Emma.
00:26We've applied for The Block for seven years.
00:28This was our lucky year.
00:30Then South Australian hairdresser Matt and his best mate Barbara Robbie.
00:34We're the hairy boys, except I'm smooth like a dolphin.
00:42And jetting in from the Gold Coast, we had dental practice manager Alicia with her plumber hubby Sonny.
00:49Holy doly.
00:50Gone from watching the show with the kids at home to, yeah, now being here and it's happening.
00:55Like, this is everything that we wished for.
00:57Following them from the West Coast were girlfriends geologist Han and marketing analyst Kan.
01:02Hannah and I actually met a year ago on Hinge, the dating app.
01:06She absolutely blew me away and we have pretty much been inseparable ever since that first date.
01:12They're a good looking couple.
01:14Last but by no means least.
01:17Taz!
01:18Taz!
01:19Taz!
01:20Oh God.
01:21Western Australian police officers and parents Britt and Taz.
01:25Ready for school?
01:27No.
01:28No?
01:29There were the same number of players and the same number of houses.
01:32But the game has changed.
01:34This is what you are going to be building.
01:38Wow.
01:39This is the first new build in block history.
01:42There's no demo and the houses are all identical.
01:47With the exception of roof detail.
01:49All right, so pitch roof, flat roof.
01:53Pitch roof, flat roof, pitch roof.
01:55The house allocation was decided by float design.
01:58Mm-hmm.
01:59Game on, walls.
02:00And the winners were...
02:02Britt and Taz.
02:05Straight away I knew what house I wanted.
02:08House three.
02:09Britt and Taz picked centre spot.
02:12House one.
02:13Number one.
02:14Em and Ben got their first choice.
02:16We're going to take number five.
02:18We'll take the other end.
02:19We'll take five.
02:20Robbie and Matt stole the last cable roof.
02:23We'll go house number...
02:24Two.
02:26No, that was the wrong one.
02:29Yeah.
02:30Leaving Han and Cam with a flat roof.
02:33That's so ugly.
02:35And Queenslanders Sunny and Alicia got house four.
02:39Welcome home.
02:40House four.
02:43Then it was on to the build.
02:45All right.
02:46We're starting bathroom today.
02:47Yeah.
02:48We've never built a bathroom before.
02:49We've never done any of these, mate.
02:50So...
02:52We're doing bathroom week one.
02:53With a stolen vanity.
02:54This is taken.
02:55That's taken.
02:56So someone else is doing the exact same vanity.
02:58With colour.
02:59I'm coming for you, Gold Coast.
03:03I'm here, Gold Coast.
03:04Tonight, the new recruits face their biggest challenge yet.
03:07Waterproof Wednesday.
03:08Waterproof Wednesday.
03:09Waterproof Wednesday.
03:10We weren't waterproofing on Wednesday.
03:12Known for making or breaking bathrooms.
03:14We've had a leak.
03:15We were in all sorts of trouble.
03:16Nothing suits the space.
03:17We're basic ****.
03:19Starting to get critical.
03:20What happened?
03:21I'm even clutching my pearls now.
03:23Let's get moving.
03:25We still want to fail.
03:26I don't want to fail.
03:33I had a dream that someday...
03:36Galesford, Victoria...
03:37I would just fly, fly away...
03:39Is the picture perfect country town.
03:43Beautiful scenery.
03:44Tip.
03:46Quaint high street.
03:47Tip.
03:49And now...
03:51Five luxury country estates.
03:56What's not so idyllic...
03:58Robbie!
04:00Is the situation unfolding in House Five.
04:03Where's Robbie?
04:05Robbie!
04:07This morning, Scotty's plumbers are in helping pipe up everything
04:10and they turned the water on thinking that they had caps on.
04:14They didn't have caps on.
04:15We've had a leak and now we're worried about the water seeping into the screed.
04:19If there's too much moisture in the screed, we won't be able to waterproof tomorrow
04:23because it needs to dry.
04:24But you know what?
04:25I made the initiative that morning to go get some floor core flute
04:28and actually tape down the floor just because I didn't want to damage the concrete.
04:31The good thing is, you've done such a good job protecting the screed.
04:35I'm hoping not too much water has gotten under it.
04:40Yeah, it's just...
04:41Oh, nice.
04:43This core flute stops 95% of the water.
04:46But there's a lot of water, so it's actually seeped in under the core flute.
04:49You know, that's actually absorbed some of it already.
04:52Yeah, you can see.
04:53Along there.
04:54It's thirsty.
04:55It's porous.
04:56And it's sucking up the water.
04:58It's a warm day.
04:59Hopefully we can dry it out.
05:00Maybe even get a fan.
05:01Yeah.
05:02Get some air blowing onto it.
05:03Yeah.
05:04One thing after another.
05:05Yeah.
05:06It's our first week on the block, and you want to hit Waterproof Wednesday.
05:10If you don't waterproof Wednesday, it just puts too much pressure on the tiler on Thursday
05:15and Friday to finish, and then the quality won't be there.
05:18There's pressure on the trades to fit off, and then you're not going to paint in time, so this could be disastrous.
05:26At the cafe, police officer Taz is still acclimatising to swabbing his badge for the block.
05:33Can you do me one favour?
05:34Can you say the laws like what the policemen say when you arrest someone?
05:38Okay, so you're not obliged to say anything?
05:40Anything you do say, we're recorded by my camera and maybe uses evidence.
05:43Do you understand?
05:44We're amateur renovators.
05:46Getting there slowly?
05:47Slowly, slowly.
05:48No stress levels?
05:49All up?
05:50Oh, no.
05:51Stress levels to the roof.
05:52Is it?
05:53We've got to look like you know what you're doing.
05:54We bought our stock standard house to a stock standard builder, and then from there,
05:59we changed rooms.
06:00We tried our DUI...
06:02D...
06:03Did you just say DUI?
06:04No, I wasn't going to say it.
06:06You were...
06:07So DUI, is that a police term?
06:10Yes.
06:11Driving under the influence.
06:13So are you good at DUI or DIY?
06:16I'm good at D...
06:18IY.
06:25I need something to be able to...
06:27Yeah, we need seahorses.
06:30So what are they called?
06:32Seahorses.
06:35What does this say?
06:36I was so close, that's not bad.
06:38They're called speed horses, and I call it a seahorse.
06:43Wow.
06:45There might...
06:46There might come a time where I'm, you know, calling something the wrong tool or using the wrong terminology for something.
06:53Like, you know, I was doing the talk, doing the talk, and then I said like, I was like, you know, point, bark and orders.
06:58Boys.
06:59We need...
07:00We need vanilla boards and we need them now.
07:03They're called villa boards.
07:04I think it's gone around the whole side at this point, hasn't it, that you're calling it vanilla board?
07:13Vanilla boards.
07:17Taz may have more experience negotiating with criminals than carpenters.
07:21Couple of buckets.
07:24For what?
07:25Who knows?
07:26But he and partner in crime, Brittany, are catching on quickly, with their main bathroom taking shape.
07:32Oh my God, look at the skylight.
07:34Oh, that is going to be amazing.
07:38Yeah, very happy.
07:40This is our secret weapon.
07:42This is our curved shelf that we're going to have in our bathroom.
07:46We've just come off the truck from Truecore to a stoke.
07:50Somehow all of this is going to make a curved ball in our bathroom.
07:55The curved shower shelf will encapsulate the bath and shower, tiled floor to ceiling, the fluted glass shower screen and French pattern tiles on the floor.
08:05It's all part of their modern organic luxury style.
08:09Modern organic luxury.
08:10Mole.
08:11I like mole.
08:12Mole?
08:13You can call me a mole.
08:14Yeah.
08:16Then there are Victorian locals, Emma and Ben.
08:25You kicking golf?
08:26Oh!
08:29We've renovated seven bathrooms before.
08:32No, I think it's more than that.
08:34Wow, okay.
08:35We've renovated...no, it's seven.
08:37Seven?
08:38None in a week though.
08:41With seven bathrooms under their belt, they know Villa Board when they see it.
08:46It's fair to say this Renault is proving to be a piece of cake for them.
08:49Oh, see that?
08:50That's our little niche wall.
08:51For starters, they've got two Truecore steel secret weapons already installed.
08:56Oh, that's a seat.
08:57Oh, that's a seat.
08:58That's so good.
08:59That's sick.
09:00But as soon as I saw the vanity that I wanted, that set the theme and then I built the rest of the room around that.
09:07Nice.
09:08Emma's curved stone top walnut vanity will contrast the natural grey stone and green feature tiles.
09:14And they're going with a back-to-wall bath opposite the shower seat and niche wall.
09:19I'm thinking greens for the bathroom and maybe for the overall vibe of the house.
09:24Because I really want to bring the outside in and a bit of nature, a bit of Daylesford.
09:29They're really luxurious, high-end bathroom.
09:31Yeah.
09:34House 2's marketing analyst, Gann, has headed to Beacon for bathroom lights.
09:39So we need lights.
09:41Beautiful.
09:42Next to our double vanity.
09:43Oh, I love these lights.
09:45The brushed bras and this beautiful marble, natural stone look to the globe is perfect and really vibes of our bathroom.
09:53It also gives you quite a good level of functional light for your face, for your makeup, your shaving and that type of stuff.
09:59Amazing.
10:01See you next time.
10:02See you later.
10:03Bye.
10:04Can is embracing her role as designated shopper.
10:10Which is great because the on-site role really suits Han.
10:14Can's girlfriend of one year.
10:17My dad had a renovation business.
10:19So I've been on the job site for as long as I can remember.
10:22I remember I was like seven years old and he'd be like, go and like rip that bathroom out.
10:27And I'd go and do it and feel the skips.
10:29He's taught me everything.
10:30And yeah, I am my best when I'm on the tools.
10:33We've got the Skylight team here, creating curved arches in the skylight.
10:38We're trying to go for a round curved effect.
10:41It's happening.
10:42It looks mint.
10:45What have I walked into?
10:46There's a bit going on, but not with Han on my team.
10:49And all the team we've got here, I've no doubt will make it by Sunday.
10:52We wanted to set the tone for the rest of the house with this room.
10:56The design of our bathroom is a tranquil sanctuary with lots of rounded curves that make you feel their ears and peaceful.
11:05The curves will be echoed in the vanity, the mirrors, the shower wall, and even in the form of an arch doorway with concealed hinges.
11:15We wanted to do secret doors in the house.
11:17We were just spitballing ideas and it was like, alright, let's make a secret arch door.
11:22Don't know how we're going to do it.
11:24If we can do a hidden arch door, that'll be sick.
11:27How much of an arch, like similar to what your shaving cabinets are you going to buy?
11:30Yeah.
11:31That's the sort of stuff that I'd want to do, like get onto now.
11:33Yeah.
11:34Because I'll have to frame out the arch and stuff here.
11:35Yeah.
11:36Like you're going to have to arch your tiles because you're tiling up this wall as well.
11:39So you have to, which is fine, you've just got to cut, cut radiuses into your tiles, yeah?
11:43Throw on spanners.
11:45If you can see it, dream it, why not do it, right?
11:55I went to Beacon, yep.
11:57Britt and I travelled together, my little passenger princess.
12:00Do you want me to go back?
12:02No.
12:03I can have one as soon as you get home.
12:05It's funny, I offered to drive in the beginning and then now I think it's sort of a given that I'm just driving.
12:11But anyway, I'm okay with driving.
12:14I just keep thinking like our, like a little bit of our recent motto is like we can do hard things.
12:19Like this isn't saving a life, like this is building a house, this is not life or death.
12:24Yeah.
12:25We can do it.
12:26Yeah.
12:27We just say that, we just have to be resilient and just, you know.
12:30Yep, we're resilient, we can do this.
12:32Yeah.
12:33I feel straight off the bat that we'll be close with Taz and Britt.
12:36Mum and Dad, same as us, they've got kids at home.
12:39Going through the same sort of thing I guess.
12:41Yeah.
12:42Also missing your kids.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Yeah.
12:45That's something you're automatically having in common.
12:47Good morning.
12:48I actually didn't have any idea what I wanted to do for lighting.
13:00I'd send you a plan.
13:02What?
13:03I had a plan, I had a plan but I didn't know what I wanted to look like.
13:06Where are you at?
13:07Still, still working on it.
13:08Oh really?
13:09I knew what I wanted.
13:10I was like bang, bang, bang, bang, let's go.
13:11Oh you were, your yesterday's me.
13:12Yeah.
13:13Picking tiles, piece of cake.
13:14Going to Rhys, picking my tapware, piece of cake.
13:15But picking lighting, that was hard.
13:16The reason Alicia is having such a hard time picking lights is because yesterday she selected
13:17a huge vanity.
13:18Bricks that have ordered a vanity too big.
13:19Rather than swap it for a smaller one because the door was bumping into it, they decided
13:25instead to move the vanity closer to the shower wall.
13:26So due to the oversized vanity and mirror being right up against the shower wall, there'll
13:44be room for strip lights, but no feature lights on the left hand side of the mirror.
13:50The judge's perspective on it having to get a little bit longer than the mirror.
13:54Judges perspective right when they do come in that's what counts
13:57they're gonna walk in look at the vanity and they're gonna be like where is the
14:01feature right is the vanity is the feature true true true true I assumed
14:06you've picked out a lovely vanity a lot of the time they are picky about your
14:09wall lights yeah right so like things would be beautiful but we don't have
14:12the room to place them I'm just worried now it's gonna be too basic I didn't
14:20think lighting would be an issue I just thought you'd go in and pick some
14:23lights but there's a whole lot that goes to it it is quite a situation but that's
14:30the block right that's I'm learning oh literally I'm so far out of my depth here
14:46as far as week one eras go Gold Coast farm Alicia has made a big one
14:52she's refused to change the size of her vanity to a smaller one which means it
14:57now sits right up against the wall leaving no room for feature lights on
15:01either side of the vanity mirror oh literally I'm so far out of my depth here
15:08oh hello hello we're in trouble I don't ever want to hear that
15:17well I can't have any pendants like it's literally down lights and strip light and
15:22that is it nothing suits the space we're basic we have no one else be doing that
15:29you know what I mean well they are now because you just announced it to the whole of the beacon
15:33idiot I don't think anyone heard there's a way around everything yeah you just gotta find the
15:39solution we gotta put something in that dead spot I think what you do is you pick a wall sconce and a
15:44pendant that could go in that little spot because it's wired up for both so it doesn't matter and
15:48then you can come back here and have a look at it in the space okay I feel better I'm not cranky
15:53in that corner you don't like whatever's in that corner we're gonna put something in that dead spot
15:57yeah so maybe we'll do two of those and we'll try circular ones as well yeah yesterday Sonny and I
16:06maxed out phone calls to and from each other let's get home Brit let's do it when I panic
16:12he's who I ring so that's quite a bit of panicking next door Santa has come early and
16:21he's not wearing red he's wearing neon hairdresser best mates Robbie and Matt are getting their heads
16:26around swabbing their hair dryers for hammer drills is this all for us really look it's a
16:34vortex swivel bristle brush that connects to something fantastic this is our first week
16:41we have never built a bathroom we have never renovated a bathroom we're just two hairdressers
16:46and I think people automatically thought these guys aren't a threat that's a single maybe we
16:51should just start charging everything single like you we automatically became the fifth team in the
17:02quarter of bathroom week and right away instantly I'm okay with that let them think what they're
17:09gonna think Matt and Robbie's vision for house five is a contemporary country estate their main
17:17bathroom will include a multi-tone sesame feature tile dark wood vanity stone top and single basin and a
17:24fluted shower screen separating the bath and shower zone and you know I've got that superpower of being
17:31gay so I know how to style things I know how to pick good things I've got great taste I can style a tile
17:39super power of being gay it is a superpower there's not many gays with bad fashion Robbie we're in trouble
17:48because Dan pulled us aside and we thought you know what what now and he actually gave us some some
17:55really positive news it's all about the big idea that you want to do yeah yesterday Matt and Robbie had
18:02a crazy idea when I heard about all the houses being the same call me crazy I want to build a wine cellar in
18:07the ground we're talking about dropping in a shipping container into the ground I thought it was crazy
18:14there's three hurdles that we had to get ticked off yeah today alone we've just got two ticked off
18:20well the structural engineering of it second the building surveyor he's also said yep it'll be allowed
18:28so the third one that we're waiting on is council for planning yeah yeah okay okay and I reckon we'll
18:34probably get an answer within the next few days wow I'm pretty stoked exciting times so one more to
18:40go we need to probably win about 90 to 100 grand for us to pull off this gamble and it is a gamble
18:47like it is a huge gamble because if it doesn't work excuse my French nos faisons l'amour it's 100k roll
18:53the dice look I'm not a gambling man but I think we could we could do some with this if we spend
19:01money on the cellar and not win anything we're just going to have a a mud hole that is one hell
19:09of a gamble guys if you know what it's a gamble that could win us the show though thank you Dan
19:14cheers mate appreciate it you couldn't have staged that any better what you've done like a pirouette
19:31I think we need one of these in a salon this site is a full construction site so we have tools down
19:39and then we have to be off at a certain time every night the construction site officially closes tonight
19:45lockout time is 8 p.m. and tomorrow being waterproof Wednesday will be 10 p.m. okay it is good to stop and
19:55then leave it for tomorrow and start fresh and I guess it gives everyone a level playing field like
20:00everyone's got the same hours we're done for the day well done boys well done thank you that's looking
20:05very good cheers thanks so much what are they drinking w.a. oh everything anything that's worth anything it's
20:15calm good job today done I feel it almost is like a bit like school camp oh that skill well in our
20:38caravans it's like a little community would you like something yes surprise something delicious
20:45all fed meals are delicious so you're gonna you're gonna get something good we've got pork noodles or
20:54chicken veg or other chicken veg potatoes please what's your I love the fed meals they're so good
21:00we love it we love it here I never expected to like every person here and to have that camaraderie
21:07oh what do you got here eh what's that I'll eat some bickie some monte carlos from Arnett's for you
21:13oh I love a Monty it's like six weeks time when you're like blah blah blah blah who do you reckon
21:21the is gonna be I don't know let's ask Australia yeah if you had to say if I had to say no do not
21:28I'm not I'm not biting mate I'm not biting the fishing line I know the fishing line is out but
21:32you know I'm on a hand reel at the moment and there's nothing going to be caught here besides a
21:36little guppy
21:37how are you this morning are free yeah good good just um cheat up for another another day on the block
21:53another 20 hurdles to jump across and then get thrown back across and then probably jump over
22:00them again and it's actually quarter boots on it is waterproof Wednesday today which still I think on
22:09track for it just depends about how long past it takes to dry the rest of it today so but yeah want
22:17to be waterproofing this afternoon sometime it's hard when you only run up because if you've only
22:25got one person to look at that's me ah waterproof Wednesday for the uninitiated this is the most
22:36crucial deadline in bathroom week because if you don't get at least one coat of waterproof on by the
22:41end of Wednesday there's a good chance you won't finish charlie and everything else by Sunday morning
22:47I've made the decision to bring my waterproof room first thing and again inducted so it's an induction
22:53at seven I'm thinking we're looking good for waterproof Wednesday but I don't even know what stage we're
22:58actually even at we don't have any experience in feedback from the builders was we were ideally
23:03going to waterproof from lunchtime Wednesday I did in a perfect world yeah with no hold-ups and no
23:08stitch-ups morning I had been told you need to be waterproofing at 5 p.m. latest to be on schedule
23:16and I was like cool achievable major ticket items today sheet up get started on the waterproofing
23:23because it's waterproof Wednesday after all lots going on is there anyone waterproofing today oh I think
23:31like we're hopeful but wishful thinking is like what we like to say yeah to be on schedule on
23:37waterproof Wednesday morning really need to have insulation ticked off and plastering well underway
23:43which is the case in five four three two art in house one go mate get there get there season
23:57renovators Emma and Ben are nowhere near plastering waterproof Wednesday and we were nowhere near
24:04nowhere near no I'm working up a sweat insulating insulating it's the worst job
24:10it's so itchy so it's mid-morning on waterproof Wednesday and in Emma and Ben's house we haven't
24:16done one inspection so getting quite concerned right now because I can't see him even waterproofing at all
24:21today but behind they're worried as well you are getting a little worried a little bit yeah starting to get critical
24:28we've renovated before but I don't think this block experience is like anything that we've ever
24:32experienced to think that you have to do all that renovating in 12 weeks in 12 weeks and only doing
24:37the room per week you know so you're assigned to yeah you've not got all the trades spread out
24:42throughout the house yeah we've seen the show Ben oh there's a lot of work guys I don't know if you
24:48know the format of the blog there's gonna be a lot of work we got our work cut out for us I mean
24:54we'll push as hard as we can to work through so for waterproofing Wednesday the cutoff for any trades
25:01on site is 10 p.m. normally your waterproofers could work a bit later we don't have that this year so these
25:07guys are in a world of pain right now at the opposite end of the block in house five the problems just keep
25:17coming I'm looking at that um that's going to moisture content in that there's a lot in that
25:24it's too much yep we had a little leak yesterday 99% of the water was picked up by the core fleet
25:31we put down on the floor but yeah this morning it hasn't dried that's why I suggest you get a fan
25:35yesterday and just keep it blowing on it yeah we thought it'd dry out warm warm day all day 30 degrees
25:42and plus today this would be pretty warm house five still has a big wet patch on their screen this is
25:49pretty critical if the moisture is too high we can't waterproof over that and this may take all day to
25:55dry out we just don't know we had Tyler's waterproofers probably six or seven laborers waiting on very good
26:04money per hour burning a hole in our pocket so cappuccino two dirties with one pick away
26:10the cafe are loving our builders oh aren't they just so now we're waiting is there whipping them all up a
26:15you know ice mocha loka latte situation if that screed isn't dry Robbie and Matt may not waterproof today
26:24which is going to put them behind the eight ball it all comes down to this one wet patch
26:28on the dalesford block things are a little bit different in that they are exactly the same the
26:42five floor plans are identical to the millimeter which means that judging every detail is going under
26:49the microscope years before you have a point of difference and whereas this with the same floor
26:55plans everywhere it makes that to have that point of difference more of a challenge it's what you
27:00do that layout and how you mix it up with your choices that's what's going to set you apart from
27:06the rest on the floor plan our bathrooms are on the west wing of the house the same toilet bath and
27:14shower configuration and the position of the shower head means that the showers all need to have a big
27:19enough screen to be compliant because the 1500 millimeter splash zone would otherwise spill out
27:26of the wet area into the bathroom and in house five Robbie and Matt are making a feature out of their
27:34shower screen we're going to have fluted glass coming out 900 the boys have gone with a 900 mil wide
27:40shower screen so that all the spray from the shower is contained within the 1500 mil splash zone
27:46so my dear is that you walk in the door and you'd see a beautiful curved fluted vanity and then you'd
27:56also see the beautiful curved fluted glass but the glass they've ordered is very narrow meaning the splash
28:04zone will not be contained our builder Colby pulls us aside and says we've got a big drama what's up a bit of a
28:12meeting yeah what's happening issues issues issues britain tas have just figured out that where they've
28:19located their shower rose the splash zone goes too far into the bathroom it's going to be non-compliant
28:26solutions for us i think is we're going to have to fully enclose this area terrible
28:34so we had either pretty much two options we either enclose the shower fully or the other option was
28:43we could move the shower head across a bit more to meet compliance we don't want to enclose the whole
28:48bar otherwise we've got to enclose the whole glass i could order custom glass and that i'm like that'll
28:52look horrible i'm glad they'll be able to pick it up because it's a bit of a flaw but an enclosed shower in
28:58such a small bathroom is going to look very how you going can we move it yeah we're not going to
29:05have a non-compliant bathroom are we so it's not going to be the perfect bathroom that we had
29:10originally planned because now the shower head's going to be positioned a fair bit closer into that
29:15corner you know as long as you can deliver a compliant bathroom we've got a chance at doing
29:21something special next door sunny and alicia have opted to fully enclose their bath and shower
29:30what's going on mate um door size and shower door size and shower yeah 650
29:38is that all you got well that's what we're thinking it'll be yeah 650 is tight 650 opening
29:44can't have 650 opening 750 feels ideal yeah right 700 if you're tight yeah but don't go less
29:51we're not being tight because i know the judges that's they they always look at the opening shower
29:59size absolutely yeah all right all right now i just wanted to ask a question is it going to work or are
30:03you and you know you speak i can't give you the answers all the time then leisha's got pulled
30:10it a red rag and she's like what please don't make it 650. well we'll just speak to brodie and see what
30:16the guys he just asked me to find out about 650. brady what are you thinking is going to be our door
30:22size 650 is what all they can get with such short notice 650 is tight the last thing that's it that's
30:29it that's exactly on the block there's no hiding from anything no you got camera in your face in the
30:36first second and don't forget this year like the judge because everything's the same they're going to
30:40be looking at these things you've got opinions left right and center don't you yeah and then we're
30:44trying to work out what our aim is if you move that water point 500 mil you don't need any of it
30:50no shower screen well it depends what you want to do you either want a shower screen
30:57mm okay decisions it would be a point of difference no one else has got
31:03beg your pardon can we tell them last man to hold
31:05now some time yes i would prefer that
31:13so now we're planning on getting rid of a shower screen
31:21i remind sunny day and night yes you make decisions on the fly but these are also decisions that could
31:29affect our end game and our kids end game and the whole reason we came here
31:45i'm just not used to this i'm working like this you know what i mean i don't work in the trade so
31:50yeah it's a bit overwhelming i just don't want to fail well we just do what we can do and then the
31:57rest is in someone else's hand so we do what we can do right that's all we do
32:06the whole reason we're here is for our kids being away from them we just want to be able to give our
32:13kids everything so yeah it means a lot we sort of know everyone's got glass if we don't so you
32:21give us one point of difference might be what gives us 10 grand i mean you afford to pay your wages
32:29i'm pretty sure we're going to be the only house without glass so hopefully
32:35the judges will take that into consideration i mean it was supposed to be a wet area
32:39um so yeah hopefully that will that will be our really big point of difference
32:52in house five on the dalesford block robbie and matt are facing a major waterproofing wednesday hurdle
32:58a patch of concrete which just won't dry the fan is working but it's working slowly so we just need
33:03to speed that process up so what we're doing now is actually thinking outside the box
33:09the plasters have got some accelerators so we're going to sprinkle that on top
33:11hopefully that draws out some of the moisture we were in all sorts of trouble should i just get a
33:17hair dryer hair dry isn't gonna work mate so we got out our blow dryers well i'll tell you what
33:24i didn't think i'll be picking up one of these on the block
33:26okay that's oh there's a bit of heat on that yeah it looks just like being in the salon
33:45two hours like that and i reckon we're ready to go we does enjoy thanks dan thank you
33:51we got the moisture out you know it's the only thing that works don't underestimate the hairdressers
33:59well that's new but i have heard that there's a clear front runner this waterproof wednesday
34:06hi how you doing ben ben scott nice to meet you and how are you hi good well it's very tidy and clean
34:14and efficient in here yeah well i've just got to vacuum and then hopefully we'll get the tick off to
34:18start waterproofing the fact that you've finished this is incredible and you're ready for waterproofing
34:23any second you're you're killing it good to hear yeah well done thank you never doubted you
34:32scotty said that yeah like i've done an amazing job she's she's into it it was nice to get a good
34:39good feedback to be fair if a geologist can achieve that i can't wait to see where the couple of
34:46renovated seven bathrooms are at scotty hello welcome what's that what happened welcome to our
34:56lack of plastic bathroom we had a few delays we've been doing a lot of waiting yeah we were worried
35:04but worrying doesn't do much like you can't you're not going to worry your room into existence you're not
35:10going to love what i'm going to tell you now i've barred high pages from the series oh no more you
35:15could pull the lever now you know you'd need it because it's going to be too easy everybody else
35:19is waterproofing oh well you make an exception high pages no longer so if we were worried about trades
35:26or anything we can't just jump on high pages and pick from there you've got to treat every minute like
35:31it's your last on the block yeah i should have told you this on day one but i forgot treat every hour
35:36i got your last yes thanks goddie i guess until you're actually doing it you don't really know
35:41what it's going to be like interacting with all your trades and yeah everyone on side as well if
35:46it's just bend your eye at home doing a reno it's just been an eye and the added having to do camera
35:52stuff on the side and yeah yeah it's a lot not just a reno right ti with a little bit more sheeting to do
36:02and you're going to waterproof in about two hours out fingers crossed that's the plan you're well
36:07on track your title arriving tomorrow correct first thing five blokes and they'll smash it out five
36:11blokes and you know what this bathroom is big enough to take five blokes sometimes a little
36:16small bathroom you'd like that
36:21the bathroom mate is big enough for five blokes maybe not the shower is that what you're thinking
36:27stop now i've heard about probably the biggest gamble in block history scotty goes mate i've
36:35heard this whisper that you're going to have a wine cellar on the block it's a big gamble huge
36:42you start this now you've rolled the dice you're committed absolutely you dug a hole we that's what
36:47we're like you know but you wanted to put it so i heard it was a container i don't think you should
36:51put a container in there no that wouldn't look good maybe we should sit down and you could give us a few
36:55yeah uh this csr product afs and it's like a formwork that you dig the hole build it and then
37:01pour concrete in it creates the walls and then you pour concrete on the floor creates the floor
37:05and put a lid on top we've got a temp fence wait to go so as soon as we get the okay we're going to
37:10fence up so no one can see it from cafe over there because you got a good view straight into our yard
37:14we're going to keep it very secret very secret i like that if we get approved this wine cellar
37:22we could win the block mate it's a game changer
37:25over the years the sleeping conditions on the block have been a little uncomfortable
37:32that is the most rancid thing i have ever seen in my life there's dirt everywhere there's dust
37:36everywhere it's just not pretty there's probably a corpse in there
37:43camping on a concrete slab in a wasteland this is going to be rough
37:47i believe in miracles but all that has changed this year
37:57contestants been treated to three months of luxury van life
38:02complete with custom-made mattresses thanks to snooze
38:05someone mentioned that josh gibson from titanium caravans was out giving demos down at the caravan
38:13park and i thought could that be josh gibson
38:16i was like well i'm heading straight there ben emma how are you what's going on spot on ben it is
38:25indeed the hawthorne afl great in the flesh oh good finally there's someone with a bit of class
38:31i didn't know who he was but he was lovely yeah and very attractive
38:39i'm actually lucky there's there is a handle to reach this but i can do that flick it down to bring
38:43it out he showed us through all the titanium caravan features like that oh yeah it over oh that rolls
38:51it and then it's just gonna roll up yeah cool did you hear a word josh said you can just grab it and
39:01pull it as tight as you can no no i didn't hear anything you said appreciate it thank you he was
39:09fangirling that was fangirling pretty hard is that a new flavor uh there's a few different flavors
39:16um what else i'm starting see i'm starting to feel better already yeah i told you the retail
39:22therapy it's gonna help this is what i do at home i get upset i go shopping yeah
39:29i got in the car i got out of here
39:37main street dale said i haven't had a chance to get down here yet it's been a massive morning for
39:42me it's been very emotional so yeah shopping makes me feel better
39:47i'm looking for all things bathrooms these sort of things is what i'm looking for
39:52just to like dress the bathroom a bit of a back scratch how good's this
39:57sort of gin oh
40:01a dish brush we're not at that stage yet
40:06who doesn't feel better after you go shopping
40:08bleached certainly feels better after you go shopping yep
40:10and back on site it's nearing 5 pm and house four's waterproofers aren't in house four
40:20so i've just come home i'm not happy i've gone from up here i'm back down here
40:27right now we should be waterproofing your bathroom our waterproofers are stuck in induction because
40:33they don't have the correct certificate they've been here since one o'clock yeah i know what time is
40:37it's quarter past four yeah we need someone to waterproof today one way or another i'm getting membrane on that floor
40:49ah
41:00so
41:12so you can't get waterproofers on at the moment
41:13not at the moment no they haven't got their insurances no our waterproofers are stuck in
41:19induction induction starts at 1 30. they're not out yet it's 4 30. other than me like insuring them
41:25myself i don't know what i'm supposed to do one way or another i'm getting membrane on that floor
41:31uh well i want to ring the boys i just spoke to them they're probably about an hour behind us
41:37they're probably paying their waterproofers to sit here we can help pay that bill and you ring the
41:41boys i'll ring that and ask if this all fails can we we need someone to waterproof today surely yeah well
41:49we're going to lish matt can i ask you a favor she tried to steal my waterproofer gotta look out for
41:57those gold coast couple oh hello can i come in that comes in with a negotiation if you pick up his
42:12bill from when he arrived now until when we need him oh yeah it's a yes yeah but how long's he been
42:20here for i don't know a couple of hours you can pay them for the whole time they've been sitting here
42:26waiting for us to get ready no um all right i need to get some no worries matt leaves taz is
42:33whispering his lips how's it do it it's up to you what you're doing with that but we just our biggest
42:39thing is not holding you're not going to hold us up leash and sunny they're the best people so they
42:46we said nah look we don't want to take them off your hands if it's going to affect you how far off
42:50are you though because where it could be an hour they've helped us a lot more than them we've helped
42:54them because you've got two blogs so that's what you're saying you could get started you could get
42:58started and they could even cross over so i'd rather you use us because we're not going to pay you
43:02we're not going to pay you know you're not paying for two yeah then beep beep
43:11hi mate get in there and start waterproofing you beauty thank you mate ta-da we're on our waterproofers
43:18uh-huh five hours later but now we're ready to rock and roll
43:26house four has waterproofers on site we're right now with all waterproofers on site and ready to go
43:33one more hurdle before waterproofing can officially start g-max inspection
43:39g-max is like the head know-it-all of the whole of nine and six so this is your shower yep and
43:49that's the rest of the world that has to be already taken off and redone it's the man above
43:54dan he's the one that signs you he's the maker or breaker that timber that you've exposed can
44:01can swell if dan asked you to pull the insulation to pull it down yes well then that's what you're
44:06gonna do you don't want to piss him off because you're in trouble i think you need to forget
44:11about winning a room this week and look more towards doing this properly it's unfortunate
44:20um okay all right
44:25we want to be waterproof to that level you're painting that though are you there'll be a strip
44:29tile yeah if that's what i'm saying if we if we have something between there we don't want the
44:33waterproof so that's if we can waterproof that line let me i'm trying to help you what are you having
44:37behind your taps 300 of tile okay so it'll still be covered yeah i believe that's got to come out
44:42so that we can waterproof into the tub of that i don't know why it's not out or anything
44:48from what i can see it's okay so that's all good so i'll just continue taking my photos and doing
44:53this but you guys start getting sorted you guys can start getting sorted for all the best things you
44:58do waterproof Wednesday i got passed we got there over in house two han and can have also got g max
45:09tick of approval we passed the sheet inspection and then it was like right it's waterproof crazy crazy
45:17times but next door in one ben and emma's walls still need to be installed before they can be inspected
45:26jeez i'll tell you it was tight with tools down at six the plasterers were still going till seven
45:33and there's a lot of people in there oh it was tight eyes on the prize i think
45:42we're the storm incoming
45:46and three houses still awaiting waterproofing approval
45:49i don't know what state these bathrooms gonna be in come sunday morning thunder in the distance
46:02we haven't got there yet
46:03it's a big storm brewing waterproofers been here all day waiting and obviously just puts you so far
46:12behind if you don't if you don't start waterproofing today to get waterproof Wednesday the pressure was on
46:18and gmack was about to go home if he didn't tick off our plaster we weren't waterproofing on Wednesday
46:24it's past tools down on waterproof Wednesday and the storm may have cleared
46:36might as well be walking on the sun
46:37but an equally severe weather system is moving through the block the force of nature that is gmack
46:45has three more bathrooms to approve for waterproofing before he knocks off for the day
46:49might as well be walking on the sun hoping to get the tick of approval but waiting with bated breath
47:03so it's okay all right well i'm gonna go have a beer
47:09so easy
47:09we got it we passed we got it you have the day off yeah you can have a spa treatment or something
47:30yeah i might we achieved half a waterproof Wednesday
47:35so it was only the first coat but it gave us at least a bit more time for the next day to get a
47:41head start entirely next on gmack's hit list a robbie and matt we had waterproofers on site ready to
47:50rock and roll gmack pops around oh g flip mac g g daddy he terrifies me is the contestant hanging
48:01back to do to watch all this yes i'll be right here and here i'm so scared of him he reminds me a
48:07little bit of professor snape
48:11just a little bit i know it's because he's like he has his phone with all of his checklists and he
48:17reads it and he goes
48:24and it's terrifying and he moves really slowly when he's judging your room because the thing is
48:30if you haven't done something right he will eat you alive okay you need to cook the
48:36the bottom yep is that a mcafe cup he is scary i'm even clutching my pearls now he's not even in
48:44the room there's a strange man hiding behind there i'm not sure we know him i'm just sussing it out
48:54do you know him yeah yeah unfortunately he's my partner in this oh is he yeah well fortunately i
48:59wonder where you yeah so let's get back to this the thing is if he looks at a wall and it's not
49:04perfect your walls coming down i thought that was going to be a plaster wall you can't put tiles on a
49:09plasterboard wall with no screws in it g-dog tells us we have to cut that out immediately
49:14coming out our plasters came in we cut out the chip rock put in villa board and got approved okay
49:22all right cool thanks you mate we're very relieved that we can start waterproofing on our first week on
49:28the block on waterproof wednesday cutler hairdressers waterproofing on a wednesday
49:33and there's still one house awaiting sign-off this is being painted right grafico grafico same same
49:43yeah cool yeah but not tiled not tiled this is tiled so i'm not wasting my time no cool
49:51oh g max a beautiful man he never smiles leave me to the room for a couple of minutes take photos
50:00no worries you can go and get all your gear ready and your primers ready and your paint brushes and
50:04thank you you're waterproofing oh not yet we don't know yeah oh i hope i hope i hope there was an issue
50:09with our plaster you haven't got enough screw fixings in this board there wasn't enough screws along the
50:15bottom rail where's the james hardy screws that you've got given the green ones i don't know where
50:21the james hardy ones are they might have run out okay i'm going to get you some green screws i've got 15

51:11thank you gone are the days of dancing in my budgies in the back of a float let's let's get moving
51:17it's just the twists and the turns that get you you think you're going well one second
51:23the next three curveballs are thrown at you we've just got to be ready for anything
51:31tomorrow night right what's a barber and a hairdresser doing finishing their waterproofing before
51:40everyone else let me just you have made it a cut above the rest are you really proud of yourself
51:49bennie you see all these big blobs everywhere yeah yeah big blobs up we got knocked back from the
51:53waterproofing what the hell is that it's had a hemorrhage wow negative you're not getting past
52:00we fail if that doesn't improve it's gonna have to be redone disaster i was bummed that we didn't get the
52:07second coat of waterproofing on because i wanted to start tiling so start doing it hey what are you
52:14doing i just asked you like five minutes ago you're not allowed to waterproof if i give you an instruction
52:20you can't disobey it so you've disobeyed my instruction so now i've lost trust here no i've
52:27lost trust trust because you're just going behind my back i don't want to lose your trust
