00:18:24Je me suis rendu compte des gens
00:18:26drinking et chants et chants,
00:18:28donc vous pouvez regarder la fenêtre,
00:18:29vous pouvez voir les gens dans la pub,
00:18:30c'est une belle atmosphère.
00:18:32Johnny Owen, qui a été en son tour de France,
00:18:36following Wales.
00:18:37How many people do you think will go,
00:18:40whether they've got tickets or not?
00:18:42It's kind of a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
00:18:43Everybody that I know
00:18:45who's into football
00:18:46is going.
00:18:47Everybody.
00:18:48So what it's going to be like
00:18:48walking down Bordeaux High Street,
00:18:50like Merthyr High Street, I think,
00:18:51you know,
00:18:51when I'm walking down there.
00:18:53So when we travel to the game,
00:18:55then you know, you know,
00:18:56we arrive in the city in Bordeaux
00:18:57and you're going to feel it.
00:19:00It probably hadn't sunk in
00:19:01prior to that,
00:19:03that we were actually going to be
00:19:04at a major tournament.
00:19:05There was like, you know,
00:19:06there was thousands of people
00:19:07all right round the bus,
00:19:09just screaming at us,
00:19:11you know,
00:19:11willing us to do well.
00:19:13It was just red jerseys,
00:19:16tafs everywhere.
00:19:17It was unbelievable.
00:19:18We've had good home crowds
00:19:27and we take the faithful away,
00:19:29but France was something,
00:19:30something different.
00:19:31We know it's a tough test
00:19:32against a very tough Slovakian team
00:19:35who will probably be favourites
00:19:36because, you know,
00:19:39they're a good team.
00:19:41They've been getting some great results.
00:19:43And if you look at the four teams
00:19:44in the group,
00:19:45then we are the underdogs.
00:19:46You still have to look around
00:19:47and enjoy the surroundings
00:19:49because it means something,
00:19:51you know,
00:19:52it means we have arrived
00:19:53at a tournament
00:19:54and we need to see about that.
00:19:57That game was talked about for months.
00:19:59It was the first one
00:20:00and Slovakia was just
00:20:01constantly being thrown at you.
00:20:03I could sense that excitement,
00:20:04that anticipation.
00:20:06You know,
00:20:07we just stood in the corridor
00:20:08listening and it was,
00:20:09you know,
00:20:09sort of a surreal moment,
00:20:10unbelievable feeling.
00:20:12I remember looking at the players
00:20:14because sometimes you can be
00:20:15affected by that,
00:20:16but there wasn't a sign.
00:20:17There wasn't a sign of that
00:20:18on our lads, you know,
00:20:19and I knew we wouldn't get beat
00:20:21and I knew we'd perform.
00:20:25Obviously,
00:20:25I've experienced big games before
00:20:26and big crowds outside
00:20:28and it was just one of those feelings again,
00:20:29just a massive game.
00:20:30The atmosphere was right up.
00:20:32If you're playing for Real Madrid,
00:20:34then every week,
00:20:35you know,
00:20:35it's a circus, isn't it?
00:20:37You can't,
00:20:38everybody walks,
00:20:39he's got one of these in his face
00:20:40and cameras everywhere.
00:20:42some of our players
00:20:43have, you know,
00:20:44played championship football.
00:20:46You know,
00:20:46one or two,
00:20:46a little bit lower than that,
00:20:47they've been playing.
00:20:49So they won't be used to all of this.
00:20:50So it's nice to have somebody like that
00:20:52that's at the other end
00:20:53with all the,
00:20:55all the,
00:20:56all the attention
00:20:57and all the pressure.
00:20:58He was just a positive vibe
00:21:00to be around.
00:21:01He was,
00:21:02he showed any nerves
00:21:03at any,
00:21:04any stage.
00:21:05Big pressure on him as well.
00:21:06I think everybody just fed off
00:21:08the,
00:21:08the energy of the fans
00:21:09and was just really looking forward
00:21:10to,
00:21:11to the game
00:21:12and,
00:21:12yeah,
00:21:13what happened after that
00:21:13was amazing.
00:21:14And that still gives me goosebumps
00:21:15thinking about it now.
00:21:16We,
00:21:16we turn up,
00:21:17we went out to warm up
00:21:18and you could just see
00:21:19a massive sea of red.
00:21:25I think everybody
00:21:26who gets into good for this
00:21:27will tell you about
00:21:28Bodo's anthem.
00:21:29How emotional it was.
00:21:30I think that's when it hit home
00:21:31that,
00:21:31you know,
00:21:32exactly what it meant
00:21:33to the Welsh people.
00:21:34I think that's when it hit home
00:21:35that,
00:21:36you know,
00:21:36exactly what it meant
00:21:37to the Welsh people.
00:21:58said by the Welsh people.
Go et enjoy it.
00:38:29Tu sais votre job.
00:38:36On a dit, ok, so what ?
00:38:38On a juste perdu à l'envergure.
00:38:46Le credit's got to go to the manager for that,
00:38:48the psychologist and all the staff we've got around.
00:38:51Because to pick us up after that England game,
00:38:52because it's an honest group, this group of players,
00:38:54and when we lose and don't play well, you know,
00:38:56the boys really feel it.
00:38:57When they're in camp, it's tough.
00:38:59The camps are hard, very serious.
00:39:01But at the same time, they enjoy it.
00:39:02because they've got that respect for each other
00:39:05and they've got that bond with each other.
00:39:07You just did that all day.
00:39:08I wouldn't go very far.
00:39:10Just like this, all the way.
00:39:11Another wing.
00:39:13Bomba.
00:39:14Bamboozle the air defence.
00:39:16Bamboozle.
00:39:17Good word, bamboozle.
00:39:18We tend to forget these players are human beings
00:39:20and they've got to enjoy this experience as well.
00:39:23They enjoy playing football for their country.
00:39:25Sometimes you put too much pressure on them.
00:39:32We did a video, we did a song for the tournament with the boys
00:39:37and we did a video with the team about two months ago
00:39:39and you could tell then, you know,
00:39:40I was chatting to Joe Allen saying how great,
00:39:43I thought it knew he was and stuff
00:39:44and we were joking and laughing.
00:39:47And you could just tell there was such a bond there,
00:39:49straight away, you know,
00:39:51and by the end of the video,
00:39:52they were jumping up and down with it.
00:39:53I was watching the Rocky, was it Rocky 4?
00:39:55With the Russian in the day and that set it up nicely.
00:39:58I think a few boys might have watched that.
00:40:00Strange, really, because going into it,
00:40:01a lot of us felt that
00:40:02it could possibly be the last game of the tournament
00:40:05if it didn't go our way,
00:40:05so I think that spurred everyone on.
00:40:08Can't decide the result, almost.
00:40:10The result will be whatever it is.
00:40:12You decide how you want the performance to go.
00:40:16Within our dressing room,
00:40:16we knew that we can beat this team.
00:40:18If we're going to go out of the tournament,
00:40:19we'll go out on our terms, playing our way.
00:40:21We knew exactly what we wanted to do.
00:40:23Have a go.
00:40:23Do you know why
00:40:42You've got feelings in your heart
00:40:47Don't let fear
00:40:48From the first whistle,
00:40:50it just all clicked into place.
00:40:54Not often, as a coach,
00:40:56do you sit on the sideline
00:40:57and watch the team play
00:40:59and really enjoy it.
00:41:01Our performance, I think,
00:41:02is one of the best in a Welsh shirt.
00:41:05To talk is easy,
00:41:06but to show what we can do is a hard bit.
00:41:08I was looking at the boys in front,
00:41:11thinking this is a good team,
00:41:12these are good players,
00:41:13especially the way the forward players
00:41:15attack the game.
00:41:17We were going for those passes
00:41:19that sometimes don't come off.
00:41:21If you don't try them,
00:41:22you're never going to know.
00:41:24Joe Allen has it back,
00:41:25plays it through for Aaron Ramsey,
00:41:26who's onside!
00:41:28Ramsey!
00:41:30Wales won!
00:41:31That's it!
00:41:34Gareth Bale's got a bit of space.
00:41:35The players to his left,
00:41:36if you want to try and use Neil Taylor,
00:41:38oh, Taylor's in!
00:41:39A chance for two for Wales!
00:41:41Oh, it's saved by the keeper!
00:41:42Taylor at the second attack!
00:41:43Makes it two!
00:41:51Chris Gunter's on my side,
00:41:53on the dugout side.
00:41:54He's playing brilliantly.
00:41:55So when he turned around
00:41:56and said to me,
00:41:57enjoy this gaffer,
00:41:58because this doesn't happen often.
00:42:00And I thought, you know,
00:42:02this particular game,
00:42:04there's everything on it.
00:42:05And Ramsey leaves it for Chris Gunter,
00:42:07who can scamper towards the Russian penalty area.
00:42:09Gives it to Ramsey,
00:42:10who's towards the edge of the D.
00:42:12He's got options inside the area.
00:42:13Bale is one of them!
00:42:15And no one else can harm me
00:42:18The way that you've been harmed me
00:42:21I need to know
00:42:24Bale!
00:42:25Bale!
00:42:26That's the Bale!
00:42:28At long last,
00:42:30Gareth Bale gets a goal on the night.
00:42:33Three in three group stage games.
00:42:36Round of 16.
00:42:38Here they come.
00:42:39Wales 3,
00:42:40Russia 0,
00:42:41And almost inevitably,
00:42:43it's that man again,
00:42:45Gareth Bale!
00:42:46Oh!
00:42:52I wanted to make sure everybody realised
00:42:54who Wales were
00:42:56and what we're capable of.
00:42:58We can only imagine
00:42:59what it was like back in Wales.
00:43:00I'd love to have been there myself.
00:43:02The celebrations after that game
00:43:03were great,
00:43:04because to finish top
00:43:05and to be able to call ourselves
00:43:06the best team in that group
00:43:07was unbelievable.
00:43:08It was, you know,
00:43:09it was a dream.
00:43:10It was a massive dream for us.
00:43:11It felt like a lot of times
00:43:12that every person in Wales was there.
00:43:14It didn't seem real
00:43:15that there were so many people out there.
00:43:16But,
00:43:18you know,
00:43:18we were really proud of our fans,
00:43:20not just in the stadiums,
00:43:21outside the stadiums.
00:43:22Everybody seemed to
00:43:23seemed to love the Welsh fans there
00:43:25and we left a good impression on France,
00:43:26I think.
00:43:27Everywhere we went,
00:43:28we'd seen them in their numbers.
00:43:29We heard them.
00:43:30Don't take me home
00:43:31and everywhere you went,
00:43:32you know,
00:43:32the players singing it in the hotel.
00:43:34It was just very infectious
00:43:35because, you know,
00:43:36just people there to enjoy themselves.
00:43:38You see support like that
00:43:39and it does give you,
00:43:40you know,
00:43:41extra motivation.
00:43:42I mean,
00:43:43it's back in Mertham,
00:43:43drinking red wine
00:43:44for the rest of their lives,
00:43:45you know.
00:43:46I thought it was vinegar until then.
00:43:49We're in France,
00:43:50we're enjoying it.
00:43:50What's next?
00:43:51I'm going to Toulouse now.
00:43:52How am I going to get there?
00:43:53I don't know.
00:43:54I'll get there.
00:43:54The likes of Germany,
00:44:03England,
00:44:03Spain,
00:44:04all these kind of big nations
00:44:06are in the other half
00:44:07of the draw,
00:44:08so you must see this
00:44:09as a great opportunity
00:44:11potentially to go
00:44:12much further in the tournament.
00:44:13and it doesn't matter
00:44:14who comes out of the hat.
00:44:15It's going to be a tough game,
00:44:16I think,
00:44:16because of what's at stake.
00:44:19He's running a lot of the time
00:44:21on pure emotion,
00:44:23you know.
00:44:23It was a hot day in Paris.
00:44:47It was a tough game.
00:44:49Two very organized teams.
00:44:50It felt at times
00:44:53a little bit from the fans
00:44:54that it was the first game
00:44:55we're happy to be there,
00:44:57loving the experience,
00:44:59but we're favorites.
00:45:01We need to get through.
00:45:02Again,
00:45:03there's that expectancy
00:45:04where we'd come through
00:45:04the first three games
00:45:05where people didn't expect us
00:45:07to perform more,
00:45:08you know.
00:45:09I think one or two people
00:45:11said we would do well
00:45:11to score a goal.
00:45:13So we came through that.
00:45:15We know where the team
00:45:16expected to go through here.
00:45:17you could almost feel
00:45:20the pressure in the stadium
00:45:21from both sides
00:45:21because it was somewhere
00:45:23we'd never been.
00:45:23And off the back
00:45:24of the Russia game,
00:45:24everyone expected us
00:45:25to have another game like that.
00:45:27Football's not like that.
00:45:27It's never like that.
00:45:30Probably our hardest game.
00:45:31And I...
00:45:32Some people may find that
00:45:35strange for me to say that.
00:45:39I could feel the nerves
00:45:42and the edginess on everybody.
00:45:44On our supporters as well.
00:45:46Even the red wall,
00:45:46I think,
00:45:47felt it on the day.
00:45:50They've been on a great unbeaten
00:45:52run going into the tournament.
00:45:54We played them not long ago
00:45:55before that.
00:45:56And I think we drew 1-1.
00:45:58So we knew it was going to be a battle.
00:45:59They don't give away easy goals.
00:46:02They're prepared to sit in
00:46:03and grind you down.
00:46:05They've certainly done
00:46:06their homework on us
00:46:06as we had on them.
00:46:09Yeah, there was no complacency
00:46:11on our part.
00:46:11We knew we'd have to be right on it
00:46:13and that the chances
00:46:14would be few and far between.
00:46:18They'll defend on a low block
00:46:20where there won't be a lot of space.
00:46:22The space will be in front of them
00:46:23and they'll allow us
00:46:24to have the ball.
00:46:25I've been in that position before
00:46:32where you just have to keep going.
00:46:33Be patient.
00:46:34Move the ball as quick as you can.
00:46:37It was a different game.
00:46:38It wasn't a team
00:46:39trying to score against us.
00:46:40It was a team
00:46:40trying to stop us from scoring.
00:46:42So we struggled
00:46:43for periods of it.
00:46:44It wasn't an easy game plan at all.
00:46:50We didn't want to over-commit
00:46:51going forward
00:46:52and then get caught
00:46:52on the counter
00:46:53because, you know,
00:46:55that's their game.
00:46:56They were sold at the back
00:46:57and made it tough.
00:47:04They were more comfortable
00:47:06than we were in the game.
00:47:07Their game plan was working.
00:47:08So we said,
00:47:09half-time, calm down.
00:47:10They do this to everything.
00:47:12It'll be one by one goal.
00:47:13Maybe a little bit of luck
00:47:14with us or them.
00:47:16Make sure it's with us.
00:47:17Stay in the game.
00:47:25It looked like going to actual time.
00:47:27Possibly even penalties.
00:47:30We knew with Gareth
00:47:31and Aaron and Hal Upsat
00:47:33we would get a chance.
00:47:36Rambo got it.
00:47:37He played a little one-two
00:47:38with Hal
00:47:39and he slid Baylor in.
00:47:43The whole stadium erupted.
00:47:55You could feel relief.
00:47:59Helps when you've got some players
00:48:00who can produce some magic
00:48:01and obviously Gaz did.
00:48:03Yeah, and the way the goal came
00:48:04I think summed up
00:48:06the type of game it was
00:48:07and the type of performance
00:48:08that was needed from us.
00:48:11There wasn't much
00:48:12between the teams.
00:48:13We were asked a different question
00:48:14in that game.
00:48:19It was in Paris
00:48:20in the stadium.
00:48:20I've always wanted to play it.
00:48:21I actually remember
00:48:26trying to get out of the way.
00:48:27I ended up hitting in full pelt
00:48:29and it was like
00:48:29a big car crash to be honest.
00:48:31My shoulder was injured.
00:48:33We had about eight minutes left.
00:48:35I wanted to see the job out.
00:48:36I felt like I could do it.
00:48:38But yeah,
00:48:39I was in a lot of pain.
00:48:40He's the rock.
00:48:41He's the captain.
00:48:42He's the one everyone looks to
00:48:43when you need a voice
00:48:45and he leads by example
00:48:46on the pitch.
00:48:46He puts his body on the line
00:48:47as you see
00:48:48and you won't want to come off
00:48:50for any game.
00:48:52Looking back,
00:48:53maybe that was the wrong decision.
00:48:55It's hard in the game sometimes.
00:48:57You're so caught up in it
00:48:58that you are thinking straight.
00:49:04The Northern Ireland fans
00:49:05were screaming.
00:49:07I think they felt,
00:49:08they sensed that
00:49:09they got a chance here.
00:49:15In all the games we played,
00:49:16that game lasted a long time.
00:49:17in all the games.
00:49:30That one goal
00:49:32decided the game
00:49:32but for us it was massive
00:49:34obviously then going into
00:49:35a quarterfinal.
00:49:38For us we got through it
00:49:39because we had a player
00:49:40on the pitch
00:49:40that could make the difference.
00:49:42When we came through it
00:49:43and we won the game
00:49:44it was fantastic.
00:49:46to share it with all the families
00:49:48and the kids
00:49:49coming on the pitch after
00:49:50was amazing
00:49:51and definitely worth the fine
00:49:53from the FAW.
00:49:53We have took too many hours
00:50:00off work,
00:50:00we've spent too much money
00:50:01but do we care?
00:50:03No,
00:50:03because we're in the quarterfinals.
00:50:04Hey,
00:50:04Joe Arlin,
00:50:07I read it on Facebook,
00:50:08right?
00:50:09Two-thirds of the World Service
00:50:11is covered in water
00:50:12but the rest is covered
00:50:13by Joe Arlin.
00:50:14And that's right.
00:50:15C'est parti !
00:50:45C'est important for us to get the environment right from the start
00:50:48because none of us had any sort of expectations or knowledge
00:50:54of what atonement was going to be like when we actually got there.
00:50:58Two Ben Davises.
00:51:00And one Josh Williams.
00:51:02We were a family. We were a family. It was like living together.
00:51:05Well, we were living together for six weeks.
00:51:07Ready?
00:51:08Yeah.
00:51:10Get in.
00:51:13What are you speaking to?
00:51:15I can see a reflection behind me.
00:51:21The lads all get on so well.
00:51:22It wasn't a chore to sort of be away with each other for that long.
00:51:24We loved every minute of it.
00:51:26Like being with your mates all the time, being on holiday
00:51:28and just enjoying the occasion.
00:51:29We're doing quizzes all the time.
00:51:32We're playing table tennis.
00:51:33We're watching games.
00:51:34We do everything together.
00:51:36We have a round of golf.
00:51:39I'm getting cramp in my forearm.
00:51:41The hotel was the relaxation area.
00:51:44We went to eat, sleep, play table tennis, darts.
00:51:47The younger lads played on the Playstations or Xbox or whatever they was playing.
00:51:52The fact that we all enjoy spending so much time with each other,
00:51:55it really does help in the downtime when maybe other teams will be bored.
00:51:59I think the standard of table tennis improved dramatically from the start to the end of the tournament.
00:52:04The rest of the staff are a bit scared to take a point off the gaffer.
00:52:10The gaffer thinks he's a good player.
00:52:11Oh, he's horrendous.
00:52:15Yeah!
00:52:17They used to be on it all the time.
00:52:19Couldn't even get a go, could we?
00:52:21No.
00:52:22Trying to keep 23 players happy and involved for four to five weeks
00:52:28is always going to be a challenge.
00:52:30Wales aren't the sole home nation left at Euro 2016.
00:52:34You dispatch from Northern Ireland, England, well, they did their own thing against Iceland.
00:52:40Surprised, happy, all of the above.
00:52:43Eddie, go throw.
00:52:45Eddie, Eddie.
00:52:46Oh, yeah!
00:52:47I still don't know how it's got out.
00:53:03Someone's leaked it or sent it to someone.
00:53:05And, you know, before I know it's all over Twitter and I'm starting to panic because I can't quite believe that.
00:53:14They come out and that was that.
00:53:16You know, nothing we could do about it.
00:53:19I think they're just confident young lads playing football, enjoying themselves, being away together.
00:53:25You know, and there's no disrespect to anybody.
00:53:27It was just the fact that the event, the time, when it happened, who it was.
00:53:32You know, you can't really describe to be in that environment.
00:53:52Again, like you say, after such a long time playing for Wales, to be part of it was something I'll never forget.
00:53:58Chris Gunter's going to potentially miss his brother's wedding.
00:54:02Neil Taylor is missing Beyonce tomorrow night, which he's very annoyed about.
00:54:05What are you missing out on, or what do you hope you could miss out on?
00:54:10I planned everything for after the final, so I was the clever one in the group, I think.
00:54:17I am experiencing feelings that I didn't know I was potential, or I'll have potential to feel.
00:54:22It's sensational.
00:54:23I mean, none of us can quite believe it, really.
00:54:25In terms of experiences that you've had in your life, where does this rank already?
00:54:29It's on a par with my daughter's birth, I'd say.
00:54:32So, better than any wedding that I've been to and said yes, this is...
00:54:38So, just being caught in an absolute downpour.
00:54:49There's John Murray!
00:54:51John!
00:54:52John Murray, voice of Five Live.
00:54:55Predictions for tonight, please, John.
00:54:57Predictions for tonight.
00:54:58I'm going to go for...
00:55:02Be honest, John.
00:55:03Yeah, I'm going to be honest.
00:55:04I'm going to go for 2-1 to Belgium.
00:55:09As I've said, John used to be the voice of Five Live.
00:55:12There's far better people on it than him.
00:55:16That's been John finished now.
00:55:18He's gone Belgium tonight.
00:55:19We are finished.
00:55:20Correct, finished.
00:55:21I'm in love.
00:55:21I think the Belgian public thought when they saw they were going to play Wales,
00:55:30they were probably rubbing their hands and thought, yeah,
00:55:32because the Belgian were a fantastic team.
00:55:34I think they're ranked second in the world.
00:55:36I think if you were to ask the Belgian players themselves,
00:55:39they may have given you a different insight into what they were thinking
00:55:41because we've had some good games with them and we've matched them.
00:55:44Felt like an away game, I suppose.
00:56:10Because although we took loads of fans over there,
00:56:11the size of the stadium, the amount that Belgium bought,
00:56:13it felt like an away game.
00:56:15I mean, it was a nice British night.
00:56:16It was raining.
00:56:17It was a bit cooler.
00:56:20Belgium started strongly,
00:56:21but they're a quality side full of great individuals.
00:56:28They had a couple of chances, a few blocks on the line.
00:56:34Three or four men chucking themselves in front of the ball
00:56:36and we were just clinging on.
00:56:40Well, sometimes you play against good teams who are good with the ball
00:56:45and you have the tendency to sit back and watch them
00:56:48and say, yeah, they are good with the ball, aren't they?
00:56:51Rather than stepping in and affecting it and upsetting them.
00:56:53You know, in a game of that magnitude, the first goal is key.
00:57:13I think most people thought it's the end of that
00:57:15because we're going to have to attack, they'll exploit the space we leave.
00:57:19Well, it just shows that that's not always the case.
00:57:25We bossed the game.
00:57:28From that point on to the end of the first 45 minutes,
00:57:31we bossed that game.
00:57:32And the gaps in the game, I was just looking round and thinking,
00:57:44we're having a really good game, yeah?
00:57:45And we're giving these, the favourites of the tournament,
00:57:48a run for their money.
00:57:49Between the goal and half-time,
00:57:51they just didn't know what to do.
00:57:52They couldn't live with us.
00:57:53We had them under pressure at the time
00:57:55and I thought, there's a chance we're going to get a goal here.
00:57:57I'd seen Neil Taylor score in the Euros.
00:57:59He never scored.
00:58:00So I was thinking, oh, I'd love to get a goal.
00:58:07Gee, Ash run away and celebrate.
00:58:09I've had his class for him.
00:58:11Couldn't happen to a better ball, you know, a team.
00:58:15Yeah, that's the quickest I've seen him run.
00:58:17His celebration.
00:58:18His celebration.
00:58:18That was unreal.
00:58:20Typical sort of captain performance.
00:58:21He comes up when we needed him.
00:58:22He pulled us out from underneath Belgium
00:58:24and got us on the way.
00:58:26Half-time we get in.
00:58:27Total confidence
00:58:28that we were going to go on and score again.
00:58:31And I think they do that as well.
00:58:34We know they're going to get chances.
00:58:36But we were making chances.
00:58:38I just remember being put in by a fail
00:58:40and I just made my way into the box.
00:58:47I remember standing there looking at him
00:58:48and I could see his options.
00:58:50We were all shouting for him just to pass their tails
00:58:52with an acres of space.
00:58:54But I've just thought, hold on a minute,
00:58:56I can generate a bit of space.
00:58:58And he did something I never thought he was going to do.
00:59:01Definitely the best goal of my life.
00:59:14What a feeling in that goal was,
00:59:15it was amazing for Haaland for the team.
00:59:17He sensed it was on to do it.
00:59:19He took the gamble and paid off.
00:59:21The noise, the eruption that happened at the time.
00:59:24Like I said, there was only a quarter
00:59:26probably of Welsh fans in the stadium,
00:59:28but it went crazy.
00:59:29I'd like to sit here and say, you know,
00:59:31I drilled him on it.
00:59:32Two, three days running.
00:59:34But I can't.
00:59:39We're probably 25 minutes away from going to a semi-final.
00:59:43And they had one or two moments.
00:59:51We had a drinks break and I was having a drink
00:59:52and Sean tried to throw a gel on to Rambo.
00:59:55Lobbed it on and tails was up the other way
00:59:57and it's sitting clean on the side of the head.
00:59:59The bench said afterwards, it sort of, you know,
01:00:01broke the pressure a little bit
01:00:02that we had a chance to laugh at something
01:00:03because we were obviously really nervous at 2-1.
01:00:05We were sort of pen backer for the last sort of 10 minutes or so.
01:00:08And I think it came from a free kick.
01:00:12Chris Gallop off, down the right.
01:00:16I think it was only five minutes ago
01:00:17and I'm thinking, don't cross it.
01:00:23It wasn't as if we were in the last minute or so.
01:00:26So you've seen Sam.
01:00:29It was perfect for me to go and attack him.
01:00:32When it's left, they said, I'm thinking,
01:00:34this is going in.
01:00:38What a header, by the way.
01:00:48The thing that would live most for me
01:00:50is the fact that it was in that corner.
01:00:53It was like a wave that came rushing down
01:00:55and they were just going completely crazy.
01:00:59Knowing that, you know, we've got two goals on them here
01:01:02and there's only a couple of minutes to go,
01:01:03we're probably going to win the game.
01:01:05Not the best feeling I've had on a football pitch.
01:01:08need to give anything to try and relive
01:01:10that five minutes or so.
01:01:12It was all a dream, honestly.
01:01:13It was all a dream for us, for it to have gone like that.
01:01:15You know, I've played for Wales for eight and a half years now
01:01:17and I've never seen a Welsh team play so well.
01:01:19I think I sort of collapsed to the floor
01:01:20and just feeling the energy sort of zap out of me
01:01:23in terms of, you know, we've done it.
01:01:24To beat Belgium, favoured to the competition at the time and to beat them 3-1 in the quarterfinals,
01:01:36you're going into the semifinals, you're one game away from the final.
01:01:40I'm a grown man and I don't cry a lot, but we are in the semifinal Wales.
01:01:59It didn't make any sense at the time.
01:02:00I remember after the game, we'd just said it so many times, like, what are we doing?
01:02:10So we've got to a tournament.
01:02:13Job done.
01:02:14Can we get out of the group?
01:02:15Job done.
01:02:15Hold on a minute.
01:02:16Now we're in the semifinal.
01:02:17And it's like, wow.
01:02:19It's a wonderful back story with yourself.
01:02:21You know, your contract ran out the 1st of July without a club at the moment.
01:02:26Has your representative been a bit busy in the last few days?
01:02:30Um, yeah.
01:02:37They were absolutely awesome.
01:02:39And this is the best time of my life.
01:02:44I never thought I'd see this day.
01:02:46There's a real party whenever Wales go away.
01:02:52Even when we didn't qualify, you know, there's a real sort of spirit de corps amongst the fans.
01:02:56And that's a lot to do with what Chris Coleman and SM Gary Speed before that tried to engineer
01:03:00and the Welsh FA.
01:03:01The Welsh FA have been brilliant in trying to create this atmosphere that when you go away
01:03:05to watch Wales, we're all a big family going.
01:03:08I don't think we could take any of it in because we weren't in the big cities out in France either,
01:03:12other than when it was the matches.
01:03:13because Dinal is a very quiet little town.
01:03:16I don't think any of us understood how big it was back home.
01:03:28I'm speaking back to my wife when she was telling everybody in the village with the Welsh flag out the window
01:03:33and everyone was watching the game and all going off and going early.
01:03:37You heard about the fan parks and, you know, before the first game, we were like, there's not even going to be one.
01:03:42But to see the videos after the game, you know, it was just another spine-tingling moment.
01:03:48You know, you're seeing all the drinks going up in the air and all the people celebrating.
01:03:53People who had never really followed football, you know, just got grossed in it.
01:03:59You just don't understand how much it was affecting you back home and how crazy it was.
01:04:04You know, you're watching those fan parks growing and growing and everybody in Wales was involved, you know.
01:04:08And that was great.
01:04:08But where we were, we were just very quiet.
01:04:25So how long have you been in France for?
01:04:27When did tournament start?
01:04:29I can't remember, no.
01:04:3010th of June, was it?
01:04:32Yeah, we came over for the first game.
01:04:35So you wouldn't believe this.
01:04:36We went over to Toulouse for the Winkling game on a Thursday.
01:04:39They only shut the bloody fan zone, hadn't they?
01:04:41But we got to see the game in a bar called the Four Monkeys for the Ireland game.
01:04:45We were in the Ireland end.
01:04:47Fantastic fans.
01:04:47Unbelievable fans.
01:04:49So that was a real experience, you know.
01:04:51And we come here and there's all you guys around and all the squad walking down for a blinking ice cream.
01:04:57You can believe it.
01:05:00It's far exceeded everything that I would ever, ever want, you know.
01:05:04So, and this has just put a cherry on the top, really, hasn't it?
01:05:07So thanks, guys.
01:05:08Thanks very much.
01:05:09I think they've surpassed anything that any rugby team has ever done before for Wales.
01:05:18Because football is such a global game, you know, rugby is what it does in countries, take it seriously.
01:05:23Whereas football, obviously, there's so many.
01:05:25So, obviously, we've got the semi-finals of World Cups in rugby.
01:05:28But this, you know, the country's never been caught up in a sporting event like this.
01:05:32So, in fairness, the thing go one better.
01:05:35It'll be truly amazing.
01:05:37I'm sure you've got lots to work on now in the few days before the game.
01:06:00And without Aaron Ramsey, without Ben Davis, just how big a loss are those two players?
01:06:06Because they, we knew they were good players beforehand, but they have been very, very good for you so far.
01:06:12I remember looking at Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davis straight away after the Belgium game when the whistle went.
01:06:18And they're laughing and crying.
01:06:19That must have hurt both players.
01:06:21They know they've done something special.
01:06:23They also know they're going to miss the next game.
01:06:24Two bookings in five games is a pretty harsh rule to be missing out on a semi-final tournament like that.
01:06:30But for me and Aaron, it was majorly disappointing.
01:06:33But I remember saying to him during the Belgian game, let's do this for the boys and get them to the semi-final.
01:06:38You've got to feel for them because they've done so much, the same as everybody else, to get us where we are.
01:06:44But again, that's a tournament of football.
01:06:46You foster this mentality with Chris of one game at a time, one opponent at a time.
01:06:51But how difficult is it now not to think you're in a semi-final, you're 90 minutes away from the final,
01:06:57you're 180 minutes away from potentially winning the European championships.
01:07:01It must be very, very hard not to let the mind wander.
01:07:13It was similar to the Northern Ireland game, playing against a team that was defensive-minded,
01:07:17but they had a lot more quality.
01:07:18People hadn't talked about them that much at a tournament because they obviously weren't that expansive going forward
01:07:23and a free-flowing, which we'd normally associate with a Portuguese team.
01:07:27Come the day, I think I was probably more nervous not being involved in that game than I was.
01:07:31When I'm playing, it was just knowing that you had no control of what was happening.
01:07:35You're relying on other people and you can't affect the game.
01:07:39Fair play to the boys that come in. I think they did a great job, so nothing against them.
01:07:42But I just felt that, you know, they'd worked so hard to get there.
01:07:45It seemed a bit unfair that they were going to miss out.
01:07:48It was a strange feeling, but one I was excited and really looking forward to the challenge.
01:07:52You could see that they'd done a lot of homework on us, which sometimes are the bigger teams you don't get.
01:07:56We've scored 10 goals, I think it is.
01:08:00I think we're the highest scorers.
01:08:01Portugal have had to get to the semi-final a different way, but nevertheless, they found a way.
01:08:07In the first 10, 15, 20 minutes, you could see tactically, he'd set them up really well defensively and nullified us.
01:08:12They paid us a huge compliment. They went on a low block for most of the game.
01:08:17Two similar types of teams we had working quite quick on the break, same as them, and they defended very well, same as us.
01:08:24Game it was, and the way Portugal played against us, where they tried to shut all the doors and defend it deep.
01:08:30Then on Aaron Ramsey, you can find something.
01:08:33It was just so frustrating for me to watch the team on the side.
01:08:38I felt like I would have had an effect on the game.
01:08:42He's a great compliment with Baelor.
01:08:49Because they're not just worrying about Baelor, they're also worrying about Ramsey.
01:08:51We probably had the better in the first half, you know, going in at nil-nil, I thought we were comfortable.
01:08:58We said that at halftime, it was about sort of taking the game to them.
01:09:01I still think, you know, at halftime, there wasn't that much between the teams, so I think coming out into the second half,
01:09:08we were still really positive that, you know, if we keep going, the chance may come and it might be enough to get us through.
01:09:15We were 45 minutes away from getting to a final.
01:09:21I never saw John Charles play, but my father told me he was like that, you know.
01:09:41Jumped above everybody, big shoulders, power.
01:09:46You see Ronaldo doing that, there's nothing we could have done about it.
01:09:51You know, I can't see anyone being able to head that ball.
01:09:55You know, he's sort of, you look round and he's hanging up there.
01:09:59You know, that's Cristiano Ronaldo, you know, he tends to stick them in the net.
01:10:03This is where they want to deliver the ball, to him.
01:10:05You can't jump as high as you can, nobody can.
01:10:08His shins are like James Chester's head.
01:10:10From there, it took the energy out of us a little bit, and for Portugal, I think, if they go ahead, it was the perfect scenario for them to be able to defend, keep us out and try and hit us on a counter-attack.
01:10:23It was perfect for them.
01:10:24It changed the whole complexion of the game.
01:10:27It was the first time we had a mad five minutes, and then they scored again.
01:10:30For them to score straight away, sort of, you know, it half-killed the game off for us, really, in our own heads, I suppose.
01:10:39I could feel a fatigue on everyone up, with 2-0 down, it was the semi-final.
01:10:45People underestimate the physical exertion that's taken out, and the emotion that we've done, and I think it was one step too far in the end.
01:11:09It's difficult on the world stage against world-class players, and that's what happens.
01:11:22You still do have in the back of your mind that if we'd had that little bit of luck on that day, then we could have been in that final.
01:11:32We'd do it all over again if we could, and I don't think we'd have done a lot different.
01:11:39As soon as the whistle went and you're out, it was really, it was upsetting, to be honest.
01:11:47You know, I think, um, I couldn't wait to go off the pitch.
01:11:50I had to go off the pitch just to go and sit by myself.
01:11:53I knew that was it.
01:11:55There was no final for me to go and play in.
01:12:00You always dreamed about it, and you always wondered what it would be like,
01:12:04and then you're finally lucky enough to get it, and it's a hundred times better than what you thought it would be.
01:12:10And I was stopped.
01:12:11It's all done.
01:12:12It's finished.
01:12:13It was so gut-wrenching.
01:12:20It was really hard, you know.
01:12:22I remember being in the dressing room, and everybody's still on the pitch.
01:12:25I didn't want to come back out.
01:12:27I knew I had to, because I had to thank everybody, all the supporters there,
01:12:30to come to follow us, and I had to do the media, which I really didn't want to do.
01:12:40We went through some tough times here, and to put ourselves on the world map, I suppose,
01:12:45at a European tournament was a massive thing for us,
01:12:48and to get so far in the tournament when people weren't necessarily expecting it.
01:12:53We were the third best in Europe, you know.
01:12:56Well, we are the third best in Europe.
01:12:59I think it doesn't just change football.
01:13:00I think it changed the country, because these events don't come along very often.
01:13:07What we did in the Euros will have an impact on Welsh football for many years to come.
01:13:13It was the end of tournament for us.
01:13:15It wasn't the end of this team.
01:13:18I think it was a perfect example to any nation of how to approach a major tournament.
01:13:25If we were going out, we were going out together.
01:13:27If we were going through, we were going through together.
01:13:30And the fans were a part of that.
01:13:34We did something that, you know, people never thought we would do,
01:13:37and we surpassed everybody's expectations,
01:13:39and as a country, we were an absolute credit to the tournament.
01:13:43The only thing that was missing was the trophy.
01:13:44It was not just the experience that was on the pitch for me,
01:13:48it was even our hotel in Dien Island.
01:13:50Everybody would be on the bus, and the atmosphere is untouchable.
01:13:54Chris Gunther's playing his music.
01:13:56It's the same three songs every time we were on our way to the airport.
01:14:00It's the same three songs coming back.
01:14:02It's all that.
01:14:03We'll be right.
01:14:04We'll be right.
01:14:05We'll be right back.
01:14:22We'll be right back.
01:14:23And see you until the night.
