00:30Now then, if Don Revy had to form an England table football team, there's no doubt where he'd be now, here.
00:38Because today, it's the Indoor League table football final, featuring four guys who'd cost a million on the transfer market.
00:45John Kropak and Frank Boket, Doncaster's answer to Matthews and Finney, against Nelly Nelson and Junior McGriff,
00:51who are so keen, they do a lap of honour when they win the toss.
00:54Remember, it's first to six goals wins as we join Keith Macklin.
00:59John Kropak and Frank Boket from Doncaster kicking this way, Junior McGriff and Nelly Nelson kicking to the goal at the top end,
01:05and a goal immediately for Junior McGriff and Nelly Nelson right in the first 30 seconds.
01:09Well, that's a shock for John Kropak and Frank Boket, last year's beaten finalists.
01:13The referee, Terry Oath, Wilson's national soccer player.
01:17So, on the left, Kropak and Boket, very experienced players from Doncaster, already one down.
01:23Junior McGriff and Nelly Nelson.
01:24There are the men on the right, defending at the moment, trying to move the ball away from the defensive lines.
01:31That's Kropak and Boket.
01:33A lot of supporters behind them from Doncaster, very, very noisy, making their presence fold.
01:37They'll have to now, with their side one down.
01:40But, of course, Kropak and Boket, very cool players, played together for years, know each other's style.
01:45But this is McGriff and Nelly Nelson moving the ball across the attack line, looking for another opening for a second goal.
01:50And it's there!
01:50Here we see it again, tremendous attacking play.
01:57Warren Delight.
02:00So, 2-0.
02:02Well, Kropak and Boket.
02:04This game being watched by last year's winners, Campbell and Hall, just behind Terry Oath.
02:12Beaten in the first round, remarkably.
02:14That's a long shot from the back by Kropak and Boket.
02:17Kropak's the attack man.
02:18Trying to manoeuvre the position.
02:21He gets it back again, but fortunately, he's looking for a goal.
02:24Ready for the shot.
02:26Oh, good one!
02:27The beauty!
02:29Really beautifully worked, though.
02:31There's his outside man.
02:32Inside, and the quick shot.
02:36Fine goal by Kropak and Boket.
02:37Good finishing.
02:38Puts them in the game.
02:39Now, 2-1.
02:40And they're still on attack.
02:43Junior McGriff won't want to be caught by that move again.
02:45He's keeping his defender still, and it worked.
02:49Now, back up.
02:49But it's still in the defence of Kropak and Boket.
02:57This is the nerve game.
02:59Men moving no more than an inch or two inches.
03:02There's a shot right from the back.
03:03The beauty of this game, you can hit them from anywhere, and they really fly.
03:05The Londoners, McGriff and Nelson, leading 2-1.
03:13And it's Boket and Kropak again manoeuvring through position.
03:18The attack man, John Kropak, already scored one.
03:23McGriff's covering his goal beautifully with the back line of defence and his goalkeeper.
03:26Now McGriff, to move from the back there, there they are there.
03:32Two laddies from London.
03:35In for an attack, a chance of a goal.
03:38It's up to Frank Boket now.
03:40Very experienced defender, but not express enough there.
03:423-1.
03:43Well, a surprise could be on the cards if this continues.
03:461-3 down, the Doncaster lad.
03:55McGriff and Nelson have their supporters in the crowd,
03:57with the greatest volume of noise coming from this.
04:00Donk has a set of supporters.
04:04Now in the front line from McGriff and Nelson.
04:06Very much in the ascendancy at the moment.
04:083-1 up and playing very confidently in Cooley.
04:11This is Nelly Nelson.
04:134-1.
04:14It's all running away from Kropak and Boket.
04:16Let's see it again.
04:17Another good shot.
04:27So there's been a drastic change in the Doncaster side.
04:30They're 4-1 down.
04:31They've had to do something about it.
04:32And Frank Boket has moved up into the attack,
04:35with John Kropak moving into defence.
04:38It's obviously a change that they didn't want to make.
04:41It's, well, it could be too late.
04:43It's 5-1 now.
04:46Here it is again.
04:47A long way from the back.
04:48And 5-1.
04:50McGriff and Nelson only one from home.
04:53So can this change work for Kropak and Boket?
04:56Frank Boket now has moved into attack.
04:57They're 5-1 down.
04:58They can't concede another 5-2.
05:00So the change has played off at least once.
05:04Here it is again.
05:05Good manoeuvre and a good shot.
05:06So 5-2.
05:08But really, Kropak and Boket in serious trouble as we come back live.
05:115-2.
05:12There's the score.
05:14John Kropak.
05:15Oh, it's a good one.
05:18That really was a surprise right from the back of Belter.
05:21So it's 5-3 now.
05:24Kropak and Boket of Doncaster fighting back against Nelson and McGriff of London.
05:29With Frank Boket in attack, John Kropak's turning around and telling his noisy supporters to move back a little.
05:34They're jogging his elbows.
05:35John Kropak's, former attacker, now defending, having a look at the angle, at the lie, at the defence.
05:44Ready to whip one from the back.
05:475-3 down, Doncaster.
05:50What? 5-4.
05:57Terrific stuff, this.
05:585-4 from 5-1.
06:00And what a win this would be if they could do it.
06:03Kropak's in defence, in possession.
06:05One more to equalise.
06:08McGriff and Nelson, after skating it at 5-1, haven't been able to get possession since then.
06:13Since the changeover on the other side of the table.
06:16John Kropak's.
06:21Maneuvering, loses out.
06:23Now this is a great moment for Nelly Nelson, if he can get in the shooting position.
06:26A nerve-wracking moment for the Doncaster boys.
06:28They can't lose another goal.
06:305-4 down.
06:32Nelly Nelson lapping.
06:37Oh, trying to psyche them out of it.
06:41Atmosphere getting a little noisy.
06:44And Nelson loses out, so Kropak's and Baukit breathe again.
06:51John Kropak's trying to work it out of defence.
06:53Nelson, but Kropak, that's a good one from the back.
06:58The goalkeeper had to look smart to get across.
07:00Oh, 5-0!
07:01Would you believe it?
07:04From 5-1 to 5-5, it's all on this last goal.
07:07My word.
07:15We now call on the winners of the indoor league table football to come and collect their medals
07:23and check.
07:25Can you come?
07:26There we go.
07:48Nelly Nelson and Junior McGriff
08:00Congratulations
08:01What a climate
08:06Belket and Kropach losing the final
08:08But no one can begrudge
08:10Nelly Nelson and Junior McGriff their victory
08:12While they do a well-earned lap of honour
08:14We're going to take a break
08:15When a couple takes it's a turn of the fellas
08:17Who never get some kicked in the faces
08:19The arm wrestlers of City
08:36Hey, when we introduced arm wrestling
08:38Into the last series
08:39We thought we'd found some pretty big fellas
08:41Well, compared with the muscle men
08:43We've got coming up now
08:44The last lot look like extras
08:46From Gulliver's Traffles
08:47The first contest will prove the point
08:49It's between Alifax's Jack Lees
08:51Who's a stuntman
08:52And Clive Myers
08:53Who's a pro all-in wrestler
08:54Ian Campbell's a ref
08:55And Dave Lanning's doing the chat
08:57Also, I'm getting a fall
09:00Are you both comfortable?
09:02You will wrestle on the sound of the bell
09:04Jack Lees
09:05On the right of the bell
09:07On the right of the bell
09:08On the right of the bell
09:09On the right of the bell
09:09On the right of the bell
09:10On the right of the bell
09:11On the right of the bell
09:11Myers has got the first fall there
09:13With had very much trouble at all
09:15A professional wrestler who's been arm wrestling for three years
09:18Only a small character compared to some of the brawn we've got around here
09:22but Jack Lees, that was a surprise, straight away first fall to Myers, so it's Myers now on the right, there is Myers, remember it's three two-minute rounds, and Myers with one fall to his credit, and now it's Lees again, and Lees complaining to refereeing Campbell there about something or other, taking the strain, and Myers is going to do it.
09:45He never left the table.
09:48Myers has done it, and Jack Lees was not very happy about that, but a very impressive, a very impressive first win for Clive Myers from Wandworth there, and Ian Campbell, we're never going to argue with him, are they?
09:59See what I mean, now Jack Lees could, brothers in action, ease up against Mike Gill on the left.
10:06Straight away making amends, Tony Lees, and that was an express strain, straight down, no nods, one fall, two, three.
10:15Tony Lees, deep hold, get yourself on, look at those biceps, Tony Lees now on the middle, of your frame, start wrestling on the middle, and it's straight away again.
10:33Tony Lees, what power, very impressive, he goes forward.
10:37Revenge is sweet and swift for Tony Lees, now it's Stan Bar of Oak's Head on your right, and Derek Kent.
10:43You will start wrestling on the bell.
10:45Remember, it's three two-minute rounds, they just must flatten those hands, and their elbows must not leave the table.
10:50It's Kemp on the left, and Bar on the right, and Bar gets a fall, a real knuckle buckler, straight down.
10:58And really, we're getting some whirlwind action here in this championship this year.
11:03They turn over, Stan Bar from the red line in Hawks Head, and start wrestling on the bell.
11:11His opponent, Derek Kent, beaten with constant ease in the first four, but really, going down again, Bar wins quite comfortably, no nonsense.
11:26Here's another bloke who's done no nonsense, Philip Boothman, known as King Ben.
11:30He's on the left, against him, Derek Gillette.
11:33In the 1974 indoor league arm wrestling, as referee Ian Campbell, the imposing figure there, explains the rules.
11:41We can introduce the competitors.
11:43On the left there in the sexy psychedelic vest, we have King Ben, Phil Boothman of Keithley, one of the favourites to win.
11:50His opponent, we have young Derek Gillette of Shepherds Bush, 26 single, only been arm wrestling for two months.
11:55He's a hotelier, so Derek Gillette, who looks like he could use some of their products, too.
12:01Start wrestling on the sound of the bell.
12:03Against King Ben, and as the bell goes, they take the strain, and it's King Ben there, pushing all his power, and gets a fall.
12:14A bit of a pushover.
12:16So King Ben, that's him on the right now, that's King Ben, he is a nightclub bouncer, Keithley, Yorkshire amateur wrestling champion, he's been, he's, that's a great party trick.
12:32We are told, apart from arm wrestling, and winning like that, King Ben, no trouble at all, this great party piece is riding a unicycle after drinking 12 points.
12:43And he really could be celebrating after that.
12:46Derek Gillette goes out, King Ben goes.
12:48The next match features two southerners, Roy Conigal will be on your left, and Dermude Eggerty, who's deaf and dumb, but lets his muscles do the top.
12:56Roy Conigal, on the left, and that's his wife Janet, the lady with the red hair, his greatest supporter, really, has Eggerty.
13:05That's Eggerty, there's a real action here, a tremendous action.
13:12And Hagertyl fighting back, and really, this one's a tight one.
13:24Hagertyl holding hard against Dermude Eggerty.
13:27Hagerty, and they really seem to be having a right battle this time.
13:36Ian Campbell there, the referee, watching carefully here, the arms seem to be getting straighter and straighter.
13:44Hagerty there, on the right.
13:46And it's the first fall to Hagerty.
13:52Roy Conigal, the sporting loser there.
13:56One fall then.
14:03So we have Dermude Eggerty, one up there.
14:05He enjoys surfing and swimming.
14:07He moved to London three years ago after being the Munster weightlifting champion.
14:11Married with two children, that's it.
14:13Dermude Eggerty.
14:13His opponent, Roy Conigal, reasonably successful.
14:23Got into the quarterfinal and really grimacing interaction.
14:30Pitchers tell their own story.
14:32And Conigal's gone out.
14:34There's another fall to Hagerty.
14:36And that really was quite a battle.
14:40Muscle power, magnificence.
14:42Hagerty goes forward.
14:45Now one of the favourites.
14:46Norman Epp from Colne in Lancashire versus Dennis Popple of Huddersfield.
14:50It's strong enough.
14:51The elbow must never leave contact with the table.
14:54I think that referee Campbell has given the first fall to Popple on a disqualification.
14:59We don't know.
14:59We'll have to get off here.
15:00Look at that.
15:02Come on, Dennis.
15:03Taking the clasp strain there.
15:07Sounds like something out of a row I was facing.
15:09And there goes Burnett again.
15:11Burnett really screwing it all on.
15:13And Burnett's got a fall.
15:17Burnett has a fall.
15:18We're just trying to get clarification on whether her first fall was given.
15:21There's an equalising fall.
15:26Some confusion there.
15:27But anyway, certainly one fall to Burnett.
15:29And wrestle on the belt.
15:30Now once again, gentlemen, your elbows must remain on the table.
15:33Norman Burnett, three times winner of the Victoria Ford Challenge Trophy.
15:36All of these champions.
15:37It's 1-1.
15:38He has given, referee Campbell has given a fall to this man.
15:41And here goes Burnett.
15:44That'll do.
15:45Burnett goes forward.
15:47I know Dennis Popple.
15:49Clearly a provostous display of power there from Norman Burnett.
15:52He goes forward in the indoor league arm wrestling tournament.
15:55Norman Burnett remains unbeaten.
15:57Now the quarterfinals.
15:58The first features Bill Brown with Yorkshire.
16:00And the reigning indoor league champion, Dom, Buster Whitney.
16:03On your left, remember, it's the best of three falls.
16:07Keeping the elbows on the table.
16:09The bell sounds, remember, it's three two-minute rounds.
16:13A fall is just straight down on the surface.
16:18And that's Buster Whitney.
16:19There is Brownlee, in fact.
16:20Brownlee straining, trying to summon the sinews.
16:25But Whitney really is a true pro at this.
16:28And Whitney has won that first one very quickly indeed.
16:32So, Buster Whitney.
16:341973 indoor league arm wrestling champion.
16:36Didn't succeed a fall last year.
16:38Harley raised a sweat and he looks pretty cool this time as well.
16:41There's Buster Whitney.
16:43His opponent, Bill Brownlee, though.
16:44He's no mug.
16:45Lifting his elbow off the table will lose the fall.
16:47Former rugby league player.
16:49Been arm wrestling for 15 years.
16:5132 years old.
16:53Comes from Methley.
16:54And in trouble again as Whitney starts the muscle hustle.
17:03Here goes Don again and he's going to do him.
17:05Yes.
17:06Again, he does not play Ducks and Drakes.
17:08The reigning champion looking for another title win without any doubt at all.
17:12So, Buster goes through.
17:14Now, what should be a real testy tussle.
17:16It's between Clive Myers who's out to prove you don't have to be big to be strong.
17:19An unbeaten Norm Burnett from Lancashire.
17:21It's Myers on the left.
17:23So, the second quarterfinal on the left, the coloured boy Clive Myers from Wandsworth in London, a professional wrestler.
17:30And his opponent, Norman Burnett, 15 stones from Colne in Lancashire.
17:36Who is also the North of England Cock-a-Hood champion in national egg wrestling.
17:41But Myers really is a cool customer.
17:45Just look at the way he's looking at them.
17:47That is muscular malevolence.
17:49Burnett has never been beaten.
17:58But he's in trouble this time.
18:00I'm just looking at Myers.
18:04Burnett's holding him now, I think.
18:10The pitchers tell their own story.
18:12Burnett!
18:13Burnett!
18:13Burnett!
18:13Burnett!
18:14Burnett!
18:14Burnett!
18:14Burnett!
18:15Burnett!
18:15Burnett!
18:16Burnett!
18:16Burnett!
18:17Burnett!
18:17Burnett!
18:18Burnett!
18:18Burnett!
18:19Burnett!
18:19Burnett!
18:19Burnett!
18:20Burnett!
18:20Burnett!
18:21A fall has been given by referee Ian Campbell, has it?
18:24It wasn't a fall.
18:26Both players have been warned they must keep the elbow on the table.
18:29And so we are back to square one. We're starting all over again. No fall. So this is the first leg. Two minutes.
18:42Myers again. Straight. The pressure goes on. And that is a fall this time.
18:50Myers did not make any mistake. And so Norman Burnett from Lancashire facing defeat for the first time in arm wrestling history.
19:00He's got 20 seconds. Take hold and wrestle on the belt.
19:03So remember this is the thumb clasp. The World Amateur Arm Wrestling Championship rules a thumb clasp. You can see it there. A gripping experience.
19:13Myers again. Myers looking to referee Ian Campbell says, will that do, mate?
19:24And Burnett fighting for his life. And Myers saying, come on.
19:38And the referee, Ian Campbell, still not happy as Burnett fights to hang on to his unbeaten.
19:44And Myers really has got it this time. And Norman Burnett has been beaten for the first time in arm wrestling history.
19:50And his opponent there, Cliff Myers, a smaller man. He says he wants to win to prove a point that small men can still be strong.
19:57He's doing just that.
19:58In the excitement, even Dave Lanning got his name wrong.
20:01Clive Myers goes through after a real cliffhanger. And Burnett is beaten for the first time.
20:05Now it's Tony Lees to take on Stan Bard.
20:07So the third quarterfinal of the Gentleman of the Pressure.
20:13On the left-hand side, Stan Bard from Hawk's Head.
20:1630-year-old, the current Southern Northwest champion.
20:19His opponent, one of the co-favourites, Anthony Dees of Halifax.
20:22Remember, they must get their hand flat on the surface.
20:28Three two-minute rounds.
20:30That is Lees.
20:31And that is referee Ian Campbell there.
20:38Sniffing about, making sure that it's all fair play.
20:43And this really is developing into quite a battle.
20:47Barr and Lees, and just look at the power they are generating.
20:51You could light a new time with them.
20:53So, what has happened?
20:59Referee Ian Campbell is not happy.
21:01A disqualification there for raising the elbow, I'm sure.
21:0520 seconds, you have to.
21:06Come on, come on.
21:10Seconds awaited, hold, wrestle on the bell.
21:22Wrestle.
21:24And so, indeed, it was Stan Bard.
21:27Was disqualified for raising his elbow, and Lees made no mistake that time.
21:30No need for a disqualification.
21:32Lees straight down.
21:33Incredible muscle power.
21:34So Lees goes forward into the semifinal.
21:37Lees with ease.
21:38Now King Ben Boothman's back in action.
21:40The club doorman from Keatley is up against Dermud Haggerty.
21:43The deaf and dumb boy from down south.
21:47The last quarterfinal of the 1974 Indoor League of wrestling.
21:53And referee Ian Campbell.
21:56A spot of psychology there, I think, because that is Dermud Haggerty on the right of your picture there.
22:03Deaf and dumb, and you will see now, instead of a bell, you won't be able to hear the bell.
22:06Referee Ian Campbell will bang the table to signal that the start of this last quarterfinal is underway.
22:13So that's Dermud Haggerty there.
22:15Not the table.
22:16Deaf and dumb, former Munster weightlifting champion.
22:20Nice character.
22:20And his opponent here, King Ben.
22:22You're ready?
22:23From Keithley in the psychedelic vest.
22:25And there goes the bang.
22:27And into action they go.
22:29King Ben there.
22:31A picture of strength.
22:33Just look at that face.
22:37Haggerty finding heart.
22:38Somebody to sing you, but he's lost the first fall.
22:41Well, first fall to King Ben from Keithley.
22:47A nightclub bouncer, former Yorkshire amateur wrestling champion.
22:50He is one up now.
22:53And this, here he is there.
22:56Reached the final last year in this competition.
22:58Seems to be looking for a divine inspiration now.
23:02Quite an exciting vest to drive all the ladies into a little carotteness of pleasure.
23:06Haggerty there.
23:09Haggerty getting straight to business.
23:11Must wait for the table to be banged.
23:13They are there.
23:13They are looking.
23:14Engaging clutch.
23:19And words cannot quite capture the look on that man's face.
23:25That is absolute poetry.
23:30And Haggerty's cracking.
23:33Haggerty's cracking.
23:34Big bang goes on and wins.
23:36King Ben, two falls to nil.
23:39Out goes the deaf and dumb boy, Haggerty, from London.
23:41Really super competition.
23:43A right royal show of force by King Ben.
23:46And what a competition it's proven to be.
23:48Next time, we'll have the two semi-finals and the final.
23:51Who'll be the strongest right arm in Britain?
23:53We'll also be having our first look at the game,
23:55which they spent all their time playing in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.
23:59Cheese Skittles.
24:00I'll say that.
24:36You
