00:00You
00:02My name's Chris Wedge.
00:30I'm the director of Ice Age.
00:34I've been making animation since I was about 12 years old.
00:38My whole reason for starting up an animation company with my friends was to do cool stuff.
00:44We didn't think about how we were going to make money at all, and actually we starved
00:47for two years.
00:49One way or another, we got to the point where our company could make a feature movie.
00:57We got to the point where our company could make a feature movie.
01:04I'm glad we got to make a feature movie.
01:09I'm glad we got to make a feature movie.
01:16Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
01:46when we started on our script we were concentrating on these characters mammoths and sloths and that
01:59lived there but the weather itself wasn't so much a part of it the ice age itself wasn't so much a
02:03part of it so we thought well what's the best way to give the ice age a presence well let's give it
02:09one and and let's let's set it against one of the one of the animals you might find there so we came
02:16up with this hapless saber-toothed squirrel that's just you know trying to bury his nut like all
02:23squirrels do for the winter they go and they bury nuts they'll find them in the spring they just
02:26try to make them safe but this guy had kind of came along too late
02:29ice age the concept was kicking around at fox animation which is a division of fox by one of
02:53the producers there laurie forte was her idea to set a movie in the ice age i actually developed the idea
02:58ice age with um executives here at fox and i oversaw the scripting of it and we developed
03:03the characters in the story and ultimately it we decided to do it as a cg animated feature and we
03:08brought chris wedge into it and blue sky into it and it just it just everything turned out everything
03:13just worked well
03:14i wanted at least for the look of the world to be as authentic as i could
03:28so we did a lot of research early on we took trips to the museum of natural history at the end
03:32of the day decided you know the ice age looked pretty much like the world looks today i mean
03:36without the houses and highways but i mean there there has been 20 000 years of evolution since then
03:41so the animals look different but humans were pretty much like you and me without the walkmans what
03:46we ended up doing was stylizing quite a bit we took what we had learned in our research and we just
03:52kind of styled it up to suit our story
04:06oh
04:16now to find a meal befitting a conquering hero
04:40what ho a foe come on come on you want a piece of me
04:47spoils worthy of such a noble
04:52you're lost aren't you no i know exactly where we are

06:03there's this uh system of of channels that you can slide through and so it's like a water park ride a
06:10flume ride that they that they uh uh that they're chasing after this uh human child that they've been
06:17they've been trying to figure out what to do with and uh they find themselves just going through these
06:22harrowing um uh channels and hairpin turns and jumps and and uh and drops and it's just a huge fun
06:32huge fun um ride
06:39uh
06:51We put the camera right in their perspective as much as we can and so that you can kind
07:11of feel what they're going through and there's just a lot of comedy there and it's just a
07:15fun kind of adrenaline part of the adventure.
07:45Wow, yes, up to round 2!
08:00Ah, ahem, ze zegt tegen de kleine dat we moeten oppassen.
08:06The famous scat character is a figment of the imagination but a very amusing one.
08:27And so it's an interesting expose of ice age in North America.
