Do EU citizens believe that their local and national public institutions are corrupt?  A new survey shows that 69% of Europeans believe corruption is widespread in their country, but only 20% of them reported it. 00:09Nearly 7 out of 10 European Union citizens believe that corruption is widespread in their country.

00:15Greece stands out with 97% considering corruption to be widespread,

00:20followed by Croatia at 92% and Portugal at 91%.

00:25By contrast, Finland and Denmark report the lowest percentages of respondents

00:29perceiving corruption as widespread at 21% and 28% respectively.

00:35Four in five respondents say giving money to public administrations or public services

00:40to get a favor in return is never acceptable,

00:43while 71% deem it unacceptable to do a favor to receive something from these entities.

00:50More than half of those surveyed believe that corruption is common among political parties.

00:55Two-thirds of people living in the EU think that high-level corruption cases

00:59are not pursued sufficiently in their countries.

01:02Meanwhile, more than half of respondents do not think that government efforts

01:06to combat corruption are effective.

01:08At the EU level, 5% of respondents report having experienced or witnessed corruption

01:14in the last 12 months and just one in five of them say they reported the incident.

01:19Fewer than half of respondents know where to report a case of corruption.
