Gareth Edwards didn't just get lucky landing the "Jurassic World: Rebirth" gig, there were actually a few well-timed texts in play.

00:00I'm obsessed with the fact that before even getting the call to do this movie,
00:03you just happened to write a four-page analysis on why Jurassic Park is good.
00:08So I'm curious, in your opinion, what are the top three essential things needed for a good Jurassic movie?
00:14And please don't say dinosaurs.
00:16Wow.
00:18You know what's tricky about that, and this is the whole point really,
00:20is that it's hard to say it in words.
00:23When I wrote that document, what I'm doing is
00:25I'm sort of trying to take the essence of the story and tell it like it was like a thousand years ago.
00:31So it's more like a campfire story.
00:33So it's like you're just trying to make it timeless.
00:36So that's a little exercise to do with films I love.
00:38And I did it the day before I got the call about the job.
00:44I had no idea.
00:45I just did it because I love Jurassic Park.
00:47And what happened is my girlfriend, because she knew I'd spent like five hours doing this in this room,
00:52she saw this news article the next day about Universal looking for a director for Jurassic.
00:57And she just, I was on the phone to a friend, and my phone went, you know,
01:01and I kind of looked, and it was just this link to the article.
01:05And I copied and pasted it, and I sent it to my agent, and just wrote,
01:07is this stupid?
01:09Question mark.
01:09It's hit send, carried on the phone call, and then put the phone down 45 minutes later,
01:13and looked, and there was four missed calls.
01:15And I was like, oh no, the Jurassic article, oh God.
01:18And I called my agent going, hello?
01:20Like, what have I done?
01:22And he was like, you will never believe this.
01:25But he goes, but Universal called, and Frank Marshall,
01:29and they were asking if you'd be interested,
01:30and I told them you want to do your own thing.
01:32And he says, and I was not saying that, your text came through,
01:34and I burst out laughing.
01:36And so anyway, they're sending you the script, you know,
01:38read it over the weekend, see what you think.
01:40And I kind of didn't want to like it.
01:41I kind of, I thought, oh, the easiest version of life
01:45is if it's just bad, and I don't do it, you know.
01:48And I got to the end, and I'm like, oh, damn it.
01:50It's like, it was a really fun playground that I felt like,
01:54oh, I just, this is what I've always wanted to do,
01:55this kind of thing.
01:56So, yes, I had to do it, I had to dive in.
