00:01:36Good afternoon and welcome to Slush Puppy, host of the 2025 Next Gen Competition and Camp.
00:01:45In just a few moments, we will start the junior free dance.
00:01:49We welcome the fallen skaters to the heights for a five-minute warm-up.
00:02:43We're right back.
00:03:01We're right back.
00:03:06Okay.
00:03:08Okay.
00:03:09This time, we've decided to talk about the role of
00:03:16the officials at this competition.
00:03:29the officials at this competition.
00:03:31So joining me is Karen Howard.
00:03:34Karen is an ISU international referee
00:03:37and just did the women's event,
00:03:39the junior women's event here.
00:03:41And we're gonna talk about the role of the officials
00:03:43cause it's more than just judging the competition,
00:03:46isn't it?
00:03:48Correct.
00:03:48So today we've spent the day doing the free program
00:03:51and providing all of our detailed feedback
00:03:55through our GOEs and our program components.
00:03:57And they have those pieces of feedback
00:04:00that they'll be able to work forward in the season.
00:04:04Tomorrow we're gonna have a great day working
00:04:06with these athletes and their coaches
00:04:08because then we can talk about how are they going
00:04:10to be able to maximize their scoring potential
00:04:14as they move forward in the season.
00:04:16So judges will be here in the rink with them
00:04:19and they can re-execute some, for example,
00:04:22spins or footwork or things like that.
00:04:26And they can give them some ideas and tips
00:04:29of what they can do to get their GOE to be better,
00:04:34to build that GOE.
00:04:35And the same thing with the components
00:04:37where they can give some specific feedback
00:04:40on what might build their component score
00:04:43for each of the three components.
00:04:45The tech panel will also work with the athletes as well
00:04:50to talk with them about how they can improve their levels.
00:04:54And again, this is all about building their scores
00:04:57as they move forward in the season.
00:04:59As a referee, I will be in one of the dressing rooms
00:05:02and I'll have the competition video that I can use
00:05:05and we can go back and look at specific things.
00:05:08I can point out some very positive things
00:05:11that they've already built into their programs,
00:05:13their performances, and then we can look at little things
00:05:16that can continue to add again to that scoring potential.
00:05:21Because this is the very beginning of the season
00:05:23and we have a long season ahead.
00:05:25And there's so many opportunities of the things
00:05:27that they can do.
00:05:28So it'll be a great, great day tomorrow.
00:05:31Well, it's so interesting to talk about that feedback
00:05:34because as we know in skating,
00:05:36maximizing GOEs is so critical
00:05:39and getting that message across and understanding it,
00:05:42but actually doing it in competition
00:05:44is also very important.
00:05:46So how rewarding is it when you see these athletes now,
00:05:49for example, at the national championships
00:05:51in six months or however many months,
00:05:53making those improvements or adjustments?
00:05:56It's so wonderful when you can get to see
00:05:58how it builds over the season.
00:06:01And, you know, often you see it immediately
00:06:03in a next summer competition
00:06:04that they've taken some feedback
00:06:06and really applied it into their daily training
00:06:09because it's, you know, that daily training piece
00:06:12that can really move them forward.
00:06:14So it is very gratifying when you see
00:06:18that they have applied that feedback in such a good way.
00:06:23Well, and I think it's so important for people to know
00:06:25that the judges sitting at every competition,
00:06:27who are always willing and ready to provide feedback
00:06:30to coaches and skaters
00:06:32so that everybody can maximize their potential.
00:06:35So thank you for doing the job that you do
00:06:37to you and all the officials.
00:06:39And let's stay tuned for some more competition
00:06:41with a junior dance, free dance, coming up next.
00:06:43Skaters, the warm-up time has ended.
