03:24in our previous glimpse into his life we saw joseph sold into slavery in egypt
03:39there god blessed his work and he quickly found favor with his master potiphar
03:45however after refusing the persistent advances of potiphar's wife
03:50and fleeing from her she falsely accused him of sexual assault and as you know joseph ended up in
03:58prison that's kind of where we left him last time we were together but even there the bible says the
04:04lord was with him joseph didn't go to prison alone genesis 39 21 to 23 says the lord was with joseph
04:13and showed him mercy and he gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison and the keeper of
04:19the prison committed to joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison whatever they did there
04:25it was his doing and the keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under joseph's
04:30authority because the lord was with him and whatever he did the lord made it prosper joseph was still in
04:39prison at age 28 when two new prisoners arrived in the jailhouse the king's baker and the king's butler
04:48their story is told in genesis chapter 40. both of these men had dreams as you remember and joseph
04:55interpreted their dreams without going back over all the details let me just review with you the bottom
05:01line joseph told the butler that within three days he would be restored to his position in the palace
05:08and the news wasn't so good for the baker genesis 40 19 joseph told him within three days pharaoh will
05:16lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree and the birds will eat your flesh from you and that's
05:24exactly what happened joseph made a request to the butler before he went back to work he said to him
05:32when you return to palace duty speak to pharaoh on my behalf but look how chapter 40 ends in verse 23
05:42yet the chief butler did not remember joseph but forgot him he must have felt like giving up like we
05:49feel sometimes when it seems like the lord has delayed his answer to our very important prayer we must
05:57remind ourselves that denial is not the same as delay when god delays he's up to something as we're
06:04going to see in this story and joseph never gave up the lord had a perfect calendar laid out in advance
06:11for joseph and there wasn't a wasted day anywhere on that calendar everything was unfolding according
06:19to god's timetable and joseph remained resolute in god's will how many of you know the one thing we
06:26got to remember when we're going through stuff is that god isn't working off the same page we are
06:31he's got a little different script than we have and a totally different calendar if you want to make
06:35that point and when we try to hold god to our ideas of what should happen we always get disappointed
06:42god is not obligated to do things the way we want them done
06:45the first thing we notice in god's dealing with joseph are his ways in opening verses of chapter 41
06:53we see the ways of god a reminder to us that god does use strange and wonderful things to accomplish his
07:01task let's pick up our reading in chapter 41 in the first verse and it came to pass at the end of two
07:08full years that pharaoh had a dream and behold he stood by the river and suddenly there came up out
07:16of the river seven cows fine looking and fat and they fed in the meadow and then seven other cows came
07:26up after them out of the river ugly and gaunt and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the river
07:33and the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven fine looking and fat cows so pharaoh awoke he slept and
07:41dreamed a second time and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk plump and good
07:49and behold seven thin heads blighted by the east wind sprang up after them and the seven thin heads
07:56devoured the seven plump heads and that was his dream notice that pharaoh literally had two dreams
08:04one about pasture animals and one about agriculture
08:08in egypt dreams communicated deep truth and to have two disturbing dreams in one night
08:16that must have been really a freak out for pharaoh
08:19the dreams themselves were quite simple there is even a similarity to them a prosperous set of sevens
08:28is destroyed by a poverty-stricken set of sevens one dream had to do with flocks and the other had to
08:35do with crops but pharaoh did not know what the dreams meant so he called his brain trust and told them
08:42about the dreams now none of the wise men sorcerers or magicians knew the meaning obsessed with understanding
08:51the meaning pharaoh became exasperated with his counselors and the butler who was standing there
08:58watching all the egyptian wise men fail came up with this suggestion it's about time then the chief
09:07butler spoke to pharaoh saying i remember my faults this day when pharaoh was angry with his servants
09:13and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard both me and the chief baker we each had
09:20a dream in one night he and i each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream
09:26now there was a young hebrew man with us there a servant of the captain of the guard and we told him
09:31and he interpreted our dreams to us to each man he interpreted according to his own dream
09:37and it came to pass just as he interpreted it to us so it happened he restored me to my office
09:44and he hanged him god orchestrated all these events just think about it the sale of joseph
09:52into slavery his unwarranted imprisonment the interpretation of the butler's dream
09:59joseph being forgotten pharaoh's dream the butler suddenly remembering what joseph had done
10:05everything was put together at the perfect time so that pharaoh would say go get joseph and bring him
10:13to me and in verse 14 we read they brought him quickly out of the dungeon and joseph shaved and
10:21changed his clothing and came to pharaoh god knows what he's doing my friends you may not understand it but
10:29god does so often if we understand it it's probably not god god does things in amazing ways we find out
10:37later it was god he was up to something he knows exactly what he's doing and he always does the right
10:43thing one thing we can know for sure about the lord is this he has perfect timing just at the moment when
10:52pharaoh had a need that no one close to him could meet the lord arranges to have the only person who
10:59knows about joseph the only person standing right there in that setting someone once told me the more
11:07i pray the more coincidence i have have you ever noticed that god is at work and sometimes we think
11:13it's just coincidental but it's god doing his thing the lord not only has perfect timing he uses perfect
11:21tactics what is it that paul wrote to the romans he said god makes all things work together for good
11:29to those who love god and are called according to his purpose what you don't understand this little
11:35happening that little happening that circumstances why am i here why am i here now god has got it under
11:42control he's working all things together and it's like he's stirring the pot and when it's all done
11:50it will be the perfect will of god the ways of god let's notice the wisdom of joseph
11:57in genesis 41 15 and following and pharaoh said to joseph i've had a dream and there's no one who can
12:06interpret it but i have heard it said of you that you can understand a dream to interpret it not only
12:13had god been preparing joseph and shaping him to the kind of man who could be the prime minister of a great
12:20nation he was preparing pharaoh and the king was frantic about his dreams so now he's ready to listen
12:26to this lowly slave who just got out of prison a few minutes ago and just had time to shave before he
12:31showed up and share the wisdom that comes from god i am so impressed with joseph's first words
12:40so joseph answered pharaoh saying it is not in me it's not in me pharaoh i'm not the great dream
12:47answerer god will give pharaoh an answer of peace joseph predicted egypt's future and gave the credit
12:56to god joseph points out on several occasions that he knows god is behind all that's going on in his
13:04life and god is the one to explain it to pharaoh that's why we read in verse 25 of chapter 41 god has
13:12shown pharaoh what he is about to do that's why we read in genesis 41 32 the thing is established by god
13:22the lord was the one behind every event and it was god's will for pharaoh to know what was about to
13:28happen pharaoh had two dreams and as i understand the culture of that time the doubling of a dream
13:35was a sign that what was about to happen would be both crucial and quick so he quickly told joseph
13:43the content of his dreams and joseph says pharaoh you didn't have two dreams you just had one
13:50they mean the same thing and then he explained the meaning of the dreams to the king
13:55in this succinct paragraph this is what he told him the seven good cows are seven years
14:02and the seven thin and ugly cows which come up after them are seven years indeed seven years
14:08of great plenty will come throughout all the land of egypt but after them seven years of famine will
14:14arise and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of egypt and the famine will deplete the land
14:22thus pharaoh finally had his question answered he now understood what god was going to do in the future
14:30and that the lord had chosen joseph to reveal that future to him so joseph predicted egypt's future
14:39and then joseph proposed a solution to the problem imagine joseph he's just out of prison
14:44i like to think about this story it so intrigues me he just got shaved he just got washed maybe there's
14:50still some moisture on his face he's standing in front of the most powerful man on earth and he's
14:57answering this man's questions if that had been me i probably would have been very quiet and after
15:03answering the questions slipped back to my cell but joseph had become bold and he didn't stop with
15:11telling the king what was going to happen he followed that by telling the king what to do about
15:16what was going to happen and this is what he told him now therefore let pharaoh select a discerning and
15:23wise man and set him over the land of egypt let pharaoh do this and let him appoint officers over the
15:31land to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of egypt in the seven plentiful years
15:38and let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming and store up grain under the
15:45authority of pharaoh and let them keep food in the cities then that food shall be as a reserve for
15:52the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of egypt that the land may not perish
16:00during the famine that's his plan for the years that are coming pharaoh must have thought to himself
16:06hey that's a great idea well where am i going to find somebody who can organize such a big project i don't
16:12know anybody like that then he looks down at the man standing right in front of him and realizes this
16:18is the only guy who could interpret his dream out of all the brain trust in the whole land of egypt
16:23and the only one who could solve his greatest problem and ding the light went off in his head
16:29and pharaoh said to joseph in as much as god has shown all this to you there is no one as discerning
16:36and wise as you wisdom has done described as knowledge put into action it is the ability to make
16:45sound decisions even in unprecedented situations the wisdom of joseph then notice the will of pharaoh
16:54in verses 40 and 41 pharaoh's response to the ways of god and the wisdom of joseph
17:00it was pharaoh's will that joseph be installed as second in command over all of egypt so pharaoh told
17:08joseph verses 40 and 41 joseph you're going to be over my house and all my people will be ruled
17:15according to your word only in regard to the throne will i be greater than you and pharaoh said to joseph
17:22see i have set you over all the land of egypt how's that for starting out in the morning in prison
17:30and ending up that night as head over the whole nation joseph was an important man and he had
17:37great responsibility and that jump from prison to palace in one day was absolutely remarkable
17:44but god had been planning that for many years it happened in one day but it was under construction
17:51for many weeks and months you know that's the truth for us isn't it sometimes things happen in our
17:57lives and we think whoa where'd that come from and then we look back and we can see the hand of god
18:02he's been preparing things along the way i could tell you stories about my life that illustrate that
18:08but the stories of the bible are way better so we'll stick with them
18:13verse 46 says joseph was 30 years old when he stood before pharaoh king of egypt and joseph went
18:20out from the presence of pharaoh and went throughout the land of egypt let me just mention four things
18:27about joseph that made him a fit candidate when he submitted to god god's sovereignty was in his life
18:34notice he had a courageous vision from the day that joseph shared his dreams until he ascended to the throne
18:41he never wavered in his belief that god was giving him a vision for the future now hey friends this
18:49one thing to get a vision and a lot of people have visions sometimes it's because they ate too much
18:55pizza before they went to sleep but you know what a vision that only lasts for two or three days isn't
19:01much of a vision anybody can sustain that basically in their own power it's one thing to have a vision
19:07realized within months but when god gives you a dream a genuine vision and purpose for the future
19:14it takes a lot longer i hope you have such a vision for your life and then joseph was committed to god's
19:21glory we've touched on this already he told pharaoh god will give you an answer and he told pharaoh the
19:28answer was from god i'm telling you what when god does a great thing in your life don't ever take the
19:35credit to yourself because then you will lose the blessing the blessing comes when you are a useful
19:44person to bring glory to god and then god does a great thing joseph was courageous in his vision
19:51committed to god's glory and he was controlled by the holy spirit even pharaoh noticed that joseph
19:59was a different kind of dude he said he was a man in whom is the spirit of god and i'm pretty sure
20:06pharaoh didn't know much about god and didn't know much about the spirit of god he just knew that what
20:12he saw in joseph was different than anything he had ever seen in anyone else and that god whoever god was
20:20must be involved in the life of joseph he was a man in whom was the spirit of god can i ask us a question
20:27today does god get recognized in your life and in mine is there anything about you that is
20:35that's a god thing there needs to be that in our lives especially in this dark age when
20:42god has been removed from every public place where he used to be at home while pharaoh may
20:48not have fully understood the concept of god's spirit as we do today he knew that joseph was different
20:55scripture tells us that a key mark of a spirit-filled life is consistency under pressure
21:03when you're under pressure if you're spirit-filled it'll show up jesus was led by the spirit into the
21:10wilderness and jesus overcame satan's temptations in act six when the early church faced an administrative
21:19challenge that threatened to tear them apart the holy spirit guided them to appoint seven spirit-filled
21:25men to oversee food distribution and when stephen was being stoned full of the holy spirit he had a
21:32vision of heaven and forgave his persecutors it is interesting to me that in the new testament this
21:40is the pattern you want to know if you're spirit-filled
21:44well see what happens when you go through the next set of problems you weren't expecting
21:50you know why you have to be spirit-filled then because not being spirit-filled is not sufficient
21:55to deal with the issue you have to have the holy spirit help you and then joseph number four was
22:03cooperative with god's process of training this is one of my favorite parts of this story
22:09did you know that joseph had to go through 13 years of school so that he could experience 80 years of
22:17ministry through all that training he focused on the lord in slavery in the pit in the prison he worked
22:25to become a strong disciplined man of god and there was no complaining simply a desire to obey the lord
22:34and do his best some people are always saying i'm just waiting for god to open a great opportunity
22:41but my question is what are you doing with the opportunity you already have
22:45because usually what happens god takes the opportunities we have and he turns them into
22:51great opportunities if you're sitting by the wayside waiting for your big moment to come
22:57you might be waiting a long time god is looking for those who are faithful in a few things
23:03so that he can make them ruler over many things that's what the bible says and god never promotes
23:10unfaithfulness did you know that unfaithfulness never gets promoted consider joseph's example
23:19he was faithful in potiphar's house he was faithful in prison he was faithful as second in command over
23:26egypt and in each position regardless of scale joseph's character and his actions remain consistent
23:36if you put all this down and kind of take a long look at it across the page what you realize is
23:44that joseph believed in god all the way to the core of who he was he believed that when the problems
23:52came god would show up and he would show off and god always showed off on behalf of joseph
24:01as we end this message i want to ask you individually this question as you think about the life of joseph
24:08are you a big godder or a little godder do you believe god can do anything are you convinced in
24:16your mind that nothing is too hard for him in the midst of your situations that you are facing which
24:24seem impossible to you do you believe that he is the god of the impossible do you trust god do you
24:31believe in him do you pray to him to acknowledge him do you wait till he's the last resort before
24:37you bring him your problems a person who has a big god knows he's never out of touch with a solution
24:46if you know god you are always in touch with the solution to your problem he is able to do above and
24:54beyond all that you would ever ask or think that's what the bible says he's done that for me so many
25:01times i have at least a dozen stories i could tell you i am here to tell you that god is enough he's
25:09enough for you he's enough for me he's enough for every situation when you put your trust in him
25:15you can know that all is well
