00:00The garden rescue team are on a mission to make garden dreams come true Charlie
00:11Dimock Lee Burkill Flo Headlem and Chris Hull are here to answer your gardening
00:27emergencies feels disorganized a bit chaotic it's a bit of a shocker each week two of our designers
00:34will go head-to-head pick me and let them do this the garden we're gonna go with is and whichever
00:47designer loses the race is on helps the winner build the garden good idea did you get that on
00:53camera Lee said good idea Charlie amazing turning garden dreams open your eyes well into reality
01:13today the team is in Stockport with Mike and house proud Christine hey I've just got to give it a
01:20clean for this mine all right who likes to keep busy I really enjoy dressmaking it's something I've been
01:30doing since I was six I made this dress especially for the show it's got an art deco print on it I
01:37really like the art deco style because I think it invokes this era where there was such creativity it
01:44evokes that great Gatsby look doesn't it it does yeah we went to San Diego and it's just full of this
01:51absolutely amazing 1930s architecture oh we just took so many pictures and such an inspiration
01:59Christine and Mike have worked hard to apply their travel inspiration into the interior we've been here
02:06for what 11 years 11 years 11 years and yeah we put our heart and soul into renovating the house but the
02:16interior is where Christine and Mike's eye for design ends so this is our garden and it's green a bit too
02:26green in some places especially with the weeds are super so walking through here we've got our patio
02:34which is a fairly useless area at the moment yeah we can't do anything with this we've tried to plant a
02:42few things unfortunately my friend butchered a lavender she did apologize we've got another level here so
02:52we've got the grass which is the lawn quite which is green and bland got this border here which is
03:00all very heavy clay yeah every clay all it can all survives in there is a bit of heather and weeds and
03:06we don't definitely weeds yeah then we step up to the to the back of the lawn where we've got this
03:12fur well not sure what it is we're not sure what it is but this is just going out of control really and
03:20it's also hiding the the acer at the back again we don't really know what to do with that ace of
03:26no we want it more in the foreground if it can be possible yeah just we need to hide that quite
03:33overlooked here it is very overlooked yeah and then over here we've got our magnificent yucca which we
03:43inherited when we came into the house there was only one plan it's now multiplied into three I think
03:50he's like us we've flowered haven't we and indeed but 10 TLC just is a no-go area for us isn't it
03:58yeah it just leads us down to the bins I had vision for the house but never could quite realize what that
04:05vision was for the garden we didn't really know what else to do no no we're not horticulturist at all
04:12oh and we just need some knowing minds to put to put its best to it it's a lovely day shame the the
04:24garden doesn't match it yeah
04:26it's quite pretty isn't it yeah it's lovely nice bedding plants
04:41Charlie and Amelia will be putting their design skills to work for Mike and Christine's garden
04:47all right right Amelia okay let's have a look so Mike and Christine okay lovely smiley smiley
04:57very smiley yeah don't quite know why you wait until you see the garden wow okay bit of an
05:03interesting shape isn't it very triangular yeah and there is paving okay that's sort of good news
05:09isn't it it's a bit higgledy-piggledy kind of doesn't look that even to stand on does it no
05:14now when you see it from here you can really see the level changes can't yeah that's going to be
05:20quite challenging I mean I think also actually could be an interesting thing to use in the design
05:26actually working with the levels shall we find out what they want then let's have a look okay you do
05:31that you know me and technology what we really want is a garden that's inspired by this art deco
05:37period this great Gatsby glamour 1920s garden it's one I've never heard of that's a really cool brief
05:45and we want it to also incorporate our Californian adventure that's really important to us okay so
05:52sandy beachy could go either way harmy jungle plant in or some of those Hollywood gardens that
06:00sort of quite classical yeah very much so we want somewhere that we could entertain people and relax at
06:10the top there's not much to look at beyond the boundaries so the fences yeah the fences it needs
06:16to be accessible for me my retirement and easy maintenance really it's a big wish list isn't it
06:23it is for a small space it is quite a lot we are absolutely desperate for your skills your design
06:29skills your gardening skills we really need your help do you know what the budget is the budget is
06:34five thousand five hundred pounds okay not bad not bad the challenge is the shape and I'm not quite sure
06:43about the great Gatsby art deco gum full-on I've got a few ideas creeping in but I don't want to whisper
06:53them in my ear they're not too firmed up yet Charlie and Amelia must create a design that fits Mike and
07:02Christine's five and a half thousand pound budget the couple must pick the one they prefer which the
07:09losing designer will help build the designers and top team of landscapers provide the labor for free
07:15leaving the entire budget to spend on materials and plants back in Stockport I can't wait for this the
07:24designers pictures have arrived are you ready as you know Christine and Mike it's a slightly interesting
07:32shape this garden with this triangular format so what I've done to kind of draw your attention away from
07:38that pinch point here is break into the space with lots of strong leading rectilinear lines so the
07:45actual layout of the garden is very reminiscent of patterns and shapes found in art deco design oh wow
07:52that is so different here we go Christine Mike you wanted full-on impact I wanted the glamour of a
08:01sweeping lawn that leads up to a beautiful pergola with a swing seat so you can sit up there in the
08:09dappled shade that's going to be really masking the the top of the garden isn't it yeah that's really
08:14important and to get that sort of glamorous Hollywood look there's going to be these beautiful pedestal
08:21planters dotted through the borders to give this height and also impact with this colourful bedding
08:29fantastic what I proposed is to actually cut into the existing paving and create different planting
08:36beds and that will allow you to have a lovely nestled seating area here to catch some of the
08:42sun at the end of the day oh it's great though it's got a little little seating areas as you know you've
08:49got these slightly uncomfortable awkward level changes so what I propose to do is actually level
08:55that out and create a flush gravel area with lots of Californian style planting oh those plants look
09:02amazing when you come out the conservatory we've got this decking that runs straight to the lawn no
09:09steps and then I've got some art deco detail on it it looks really you'll come out of the patio doors
09:17and straight onto the lawn but the deck is big enough to have table and chairs on it so you can
09:23socialize oh Charlie beautiful so you've got this lovely pergola section here where you can have
09:30barbecues drinks in the summer have friends round and really use it as a lovely entertaining space no
09:37we've just never had anywhere for friends to entertain well not that we're proud of anyway as you move away
09:44from the pergola down this gravel pathway you'll then get to this really lovely enclosed and private
09:52seating area where you can have your swing seat all underneath the canopy of a verdant trachycarpus palm
09:58I'm a sucker for a palm you certainly are along the boundaries at the moment it's a little bit
10:04worse for wear so what I've proposed to really make the colors in this garden pop is to actually
10:10paint it a darker anthracite color and allow the planting to melt and create a sense of depth to the
10:17garden look at the plants Charlie and Amelia's designs have different shapes layouts and planting
10:25schemes but the ability for Christian and Mike to relax and socialize in an art deco inspired garden
10:32is key to both so I have splurged the budget by going for big impactful plants but also I want to
10:41add some detail in there so through this planting here we're going to have these bespoke made screens
10:49that almost look like leaves but very stylized in an art deco fashion oh screens so it'll just add a
10:58bit of interest with some climbers going up through those as well so I want to sort of get some jasmines
11:04in there for scent so as well as the impact of color you're going to have the gorgeous scent as well so
11:10much color as well there is so that's my design Christine Mike I hope you love it it's got the
11:16glamour of the sweeping lawns and a lovely destination seating area and plants that are luscious and
11:23glorious that art deco is looking great it really is yeah I really hope you love this design I'd love
11:31to build it for you I think it's an amazing brief I think it's going to be really special really verdant
11:37and very evocative of those art deco and California themes that you love it's going to be a really
11:42difficult a choice that isn't it yeah it's going to be difficult
11:45all right you ready are you ready yeah I'm ready yeah let's go another look watch your step
11:56oh well all right okay the designs yeah so should we start with Charlie's Charlie's now love that
12:05decking area yeah that was lovely that about that decking area and that and that seat up there
12:11coming out to the conservatory onto onto the deck and it's the art deco look as well yeah so should
12:18we have a look at Amelia's yeah okay oh I absolutely think this is stunning this layout isn't it having
12:23this seat here where we can capture the Sun in the evening yeah it's never yeah yeah into the into
12:30the into the patio is great yeah and the use of the screen where it just screens the bins off it's
12:37gonna be difficult it is gonna be very difficult yeah it is Amelia Christine Charlie come back to us with
12:46their choice shall we have a look go on then it's that button hi Charlie hi Amelia hello thank you very
12:53much for your designs they're really well put together they always say that Charlie I love the patio we also
13:01love your cypress trees the color of the planting absolutely lovely and Amelia just your your take on the
13:11garden was just so different we loved that the entertaining area was central and that palm tree
13:20was absolutely super big palm trees always a real difficult decision we can only choose one and that
13:30one is thank you Amelia just the inspiration that you took from 1930s and Californian and you really fused
13:45them together so yeah thank you really excited really excited now yeah you well brilliant thank you Charlie
13:53they'll think they're in Hollywood hopefully we'll have Californian weather yeah hopefully not central rain
13:59project manager Dan and an expert team of landscapers have just two days to bring Amelia's design to life
14:15good morning all right this is the area where it's all going to come out so quite a bit to do get
14:24rid of the grass we're gonna have a nice pergola here underneath the pergola we're gonna have this
14:30little paved area swing seat at the back and decorative stone all around the edge a lot of
14:36levels in this garden so we're definitely gonna try and reduce them good to go let's go first the
14:43whole team is getting stuck in clearing weeds at the front patio area well I haven't told
14:49these to any but this is actually the correct way to weed the garden get a shower out and take it nice and
14:55slow I prefer the old blunt screwdriver technique gives me good results there's 25 square meters of weed filled
15:05patio to get through it could be quicker if you've got the goat in here to be honest wouldn't it
15:11it's looking a lot better now Susie's moved on to clear the back of the garden ready for Amelia's
15:19design to take shape this is a U it's just gonna get bigger and bigger and bigger and take up this
15:26whole space which will be a shame because their garden's not big so we're gonna I'm sadly have to
15:32get rid of it and also because Mike's retiring the last thing you want to be doing in your old age is
15:38having to wield a heavy hedge cutter around and trim in large shrubs the uncontrollable shrubs will be
15:46replaced and the uncontrollable Acer will be rehomed out the front underbirds are go yeah you're right it's a
15:55beautiful Acer it's got a lovely form to it and it would be a shame to lose it having dug out the extent of the roots
16:02Danny and Susie ensure as much of the Acer's root ball is intact and then wrap it in membrane
16:08whoa whoa whoa ready to transport someone's gonna have to tell me where I'm going because I cannot see a thing
16:14Amelia's agreed a new home with Mike and Christine in the front garden and Susie makes sure the roots can fully
16:21spread before firming up around it probably like it's always been there
16:33Amelia's design calls for more manageable planting and a new shape to Mike and Christine's garden
16:39the main part of this garden is about the straight lines and ensuring that we get everything in
16:48proportion so we've got the sleepers just here now kind of as a guide to where the new area will be
16:55Dan is finalizing rectangular markings that reduce the size of the existing patio and divide the front
17:03and the back of the space as you can see this was the existing line where cause has taken the last few
17:09bricks now well as you can see what we've done now with the new sleepers this extends the gravel area
17:15and the actual garden now is in parallel this line now is in parallel with the conservatory and the
17:21garden actually just reads back overall once the garden is cleared Susie and Danny can more accurately
17:27measure up for the new paving that flat line is a good thing and it means that the top of this peg
17:35is in level with my sleeper which is the finished height of my paving so then I can go down from that put the
17:42scalpins in membrane block paving and we're good to go Amelia's small rectangular pavers will create a
17:56connection to the larger garden shapes we're going to lay these pavers we're going to put slurry on the
18:03back so that's effectively a cement glue and then they're going to get laid onto a one-in-five cement and
18:11sand mix and then we'll remove the frame punch it up and point it dead easy and the newly renovated
18:20existing patio which is being reduced in size will complement it nicely right so we're just finishing
18:28touches with the existing patio we've jet washed it now now just to put the ground in bring it all
18:36together nicely so as to show you know a little bit of TLC you can bring the whole patio back to line
18:42after just one day of hard graft Christine and Mike's garden really is taking on a new shape
18:48that looks all right ready for Charlie and Amelia to add their expertise in the morning
18:54here we are wow almost sunny Stockport gorgeous garden isn't it pretty many roses and jasmine and great for the wild
19:08yeah absolutely oh wow look at this pretty good already hasn't it still looks triangular ish it does at the moment Charlie but I am
19:21very confident that the planting is really going to address that oh yeah so we've got a lot to do still though yeah I think I could really use your help on this seating area
19:29okay lovely oak pergola we've got going in yeah oak pergola and what are you gonna be doing I will be focusing on this main vista up here which is gonna have a lovely swing seat lots of green planting
19:41so you're gonna be right at the point then I will be right on point right on point how is your ballet not too bad yeah quite well known for my plie oh yeah we've got a lot to do so
19:51we do let's crack on okay the landscapers are already busy Kylie baby finishing paving and preparing ground for the pergola what I wanted to do is really just take inspiration from those sort of strong leading lines patterns tessellations that you find in art deco and apply that to this unusual triangular space so the way I've sort of gone about it is actually dividing the garden up into thirds this area here is really
20:21really the biggest third of the garden so what we wanted to do is really create a lovely welcoming seating area and then have another seating area further down here but really get rid of that vast swathe of paving which Christine and Mike had before
20:40Amelia's design creates a relaxing area for Christine and Mike at the top end of the garden with the swing seat snugly fitting in the spot
20:49it's a 185 so it is just it's just over isn't it so we could I think then actually have it here yeah rather than this gravel section here because although it is wide enough just I think it's going to feel a little bit more purposeful yeah in this section particularly if we can get that lovely planting around the edges so if you're happy with it going here yes definitely yeah no problem
21:17brilliant okay lovely a mix of tropical and closer to home planting will envelop Christine and Mike throughout the garden
21:26oh look at that colour a riot of colour gorgeous I'm loving the hot colours very hot colours look at those gorgeous rude beckia there
21:36oh and the cosmias and some jungly plants I'm feeling very excited now I'm seeing all the plants I think Christine's going to love them
21:44love them should we get them out then okay okay woohoo here we go happiness in a crate can't help but smile when you see those gorgeous colours
21:53wow look at this tracking carpus Charlie look at the shadows it's gorgeous look and I've not got just one I've got three going in the garden three yeah and power of three are you putting them all as the focal point yeah I think so because
22:12I think so because actually it would be nice to sort of bulk it out so that really becomes a lovely central viewpoint in the garden wow they're fabulous they are good aren't they
22:25already you can see and particularly once these grown in a little bit that you really do lose that harsh point at the end of the garden and what felt like a really strong apex before sort of just melts away
22:44right let's get her in the ground great stuff in front of the swing seat will be a second seating area that's good that's bang on set within a pergola that Charlie and Kyle have been planting posts for I'm loving the design that Amelia's done it's it's quite a modern pergola so we got this uprights with a timber going across but then Amelia's put these lovely stainless steel wires in so it gives quite a
23:14modern vibe to a modern vibe to a pergola rather than traditional rafters now one thing to remember when you're putting in perglas if you're in within two metres of your boundary your fence line you can't go over two and a half metres high unless you go and get planning permission but we're way within that aren't we
23:35I'm not tall enough for this job you're better off out of the way really aren't you Charlie oh we're okay is that they've just given me this to keep me out of the way
23:44happy there we're happy yeah I'm happy to create a contrast between planting structures the team have been busy adding new colour to Mike and Christine's boundary fencing
23:54and it's great because you can already see how much the green is popping against that dark colour and I also think when you've got sort of slightly awkward shapes around the boundaries this kind of colour just makes them fade away completely and what you focus on is actually the planting rather than the fencing
24:12you're happy you're happy you're happy as Larry why was Larry always happy
24:20we are pretty much done
24:29Amelia's using a mix of materials throughout the garden how many people does
24:36it take to build a pergola three Charlie Kyle and Dan are creating a wire roof for
24:44the pergola to encourage climbers now picking up on Amelia's theme of threes we've
24:53done the same thing with the pergola so there's nine cross rafters so that's three
24:58lots of three so it's picking up that whole theme over and over again oh can I quick
25:05technical question do we want the hole up or down
25:09probably like that like that yep give it a bit of structural support then won't it
25:12yeah yes yes Kyle
25:15there we go last eyelet going in sorted now we got the really fiddly bit attaching the wires
25:29Suzy and Amelia flat pack furniture who doesn't love it are working together to build an off-the-shelf
25:38swing seat so you can actually make your own swing seats but there are a couple of things to think
25:44about when you are making them yourself obviously it needs to be able to hold the weight of a couple
25:48of people sitting on it so in this instance we have gone for something that we know will work this was
25:54about 180 quid but I mean sky's the limit to be honest it can go all the way up to thousands so you
26:01know do a bit of research see what you like see what style you like as well because this is a little
26:06bit more of a old-school coming into that art deco theme but you can get really nice modern ones made
26:12out of metal so lots of different options out there that's forestry yeah to create a relaxing view from
26:21the swing seat Amelia's asked Danny to hide where the bins are kept to this side of the house we're gonna
26:27make a little bespoke trellis panel with some baton to go across so a little bit of light through but
26:34it will hide the bins that's what we're trying to achieve but we've got solid concrete everywhere
26:38here I cut through the top bit and I thought I've cracked it but unfortunately I've gone straight through
26:43the top bit into another layer of concrete so the solution to getting a post in here I can bolt this
26:49plate down into the hole that'll all be hidden with some extra concrete and then with the post will go
26:55in there it'll be nice and firm then I can make the trellis panel the team are determined to create
27:03unspoiled clean lines in the art deco inspired garden all right what can go wrong and Charlie and
27:10the team are ready to attach the pergola's wire roof all right oh wow I have to say Charlie you've done a
27:24pretty good job well I don't either Kyle and Dan kept me under control they let me do the simple
27:31thing it was the patio and pergola that convinced Mike and Christine that Amelia's design was their
27:38favorite I'm looking forward to the whole aspect of how the planting mixes in with the pergola I am
27:46really looking forward to seeing the clay pavers because Amelia referred to them as the art deco the
27:54repetition of design that's what really sold it to me so I am really looking forward to seeing those in
27:59the garden because I can't imagine them at the moment there we go all the wires are in we've
28:07tensed them up but not over tensing them because otherwise it will pull the timbers in but there's
28:13still a little bit of adjustment so once the concrete's gone off totally they can tighten them
28:18right up it was a bit fiddly because as you tension them if you tense one up too much then it makes the
28:25others go slack so it's a little bit on each one but we got there in there's just a few screws to
28:34tighten on the swing seat tada wow look at that go on then have a seat in it Amelia so ready to test
28:45drive you should find over the trachea carpus Lee yeah go on Charlie let's get a nice breeze going so
28:53next up planting we've already got the trachea carpus in which I actually think that will work
28:58quite well there just as a little pop behind the seating right then bit of a tidy up okay here we go
29:04look at that thank you very much good teamwork with the swing seat and patio in place so is that
29:13fancy about there Charlie and Amelia look at this gorgeous variegated color here just absolutely
29:19stunning are keen to start planting do you want it opposite or staggered I think a little bit staggered
29:28so if we bring her a little bit that her her I think it's a she it's Phil hello why not we need
29:35to name them she needs to be the focal point yeah absolutely now the greens really don't need to be
29:42the only pop of color against the fence go for things like this gorgeous agapanthus look at that
29:48dusky blue against the fence it just works so well and it's so simple
29:52now I'm just popping in another unusual shrub calycanthus this one is heartledge wine and
30:05it's got these really gorgeous wine red flowers flowers may June time but then it often gets another
30:13flush of flowers in August they're almost hypnotic they sort of draw you in that or I've had too much
30:21sun today tell me about it watch day of the year and look now this here is a convolvulus and I think
30:44it's a really lovely shrub it's very compact and you can see it's really just glistening in that sun
30:51it kind of has an almost silvery hue to it and the other thing that I love is that they are evergreen
30:56so at times of the year when maybe the garden is looking a little bit drab this is bound to give the
31:02beds a little pop of that gorgeous silvery color for me I think it's a bit of a winner it kind of does
31:08everything
31:09right the post in here got the wall plate at that end and then we're going to have the horizontals
31:26going across so hide the bins so yeah we're making good progress
31:29in contrast to the sunnier side of the garden over there this side of the garden is a little bit
31:40shadier so we've got these gorgeous carex ever sheen grasses also known as Japanese sedge and when I talk
31:47about drifts in planting this is exactly what I mean you've got this group of three here which is a
31:52really naturalistic way of planting because you'll just have this really gorgeous swathe coming through
31:58here the other thing is they're nice and rustly so they're quite textual and sensory and when it's
32:04a bit windy they'll make a lovely rustling noise gorgeous it's looking fantastic already thank you very
32:18much make the difference thank you
32:20that's the hole dug for my climbers now Amelia's chosen two climbers that are quite vigorous which
32:35is great because they'll come up and give a lovely dappled shade over the seating area both evergreen
32:42or semi evergreen so we've got clematis armandii snowdrift lovely white flowers in the spring and
32:50then on this side we've got a honeysuckle this honeysuckle is called lenicera henrii copper beauty
32:57and it flowers later in the summer and it's self-twining so it will actually wrap around on its own but
33:04it's definitely worth when you're starting out with a climber tying a few in just so it sort of is tied in
33:11and it stops the wind from bashing it around as well lovely right
33:17gorgeous
33:23at the side of the garden the team have laid down gravel for a gravel garden this section here is
33:35our californian garden and it's a real nod to christine and mike's travels so we've got potentilla
33:43we've got verbena benariensis artemisia silver queen and some yuccas as well drifting through and these sort
33:50of plants love dry arid quite poor soil conditions which is why we've planted them in this gravel here
33:58but over time these yuccas here these variegated yuccas will get a little bit bigger and what they
34:04will do is throw out really tall spikes of flowers you're also hiding the bins which are over there
34:10because your eye is just completely drawn to this amazing selection of plants
34:23now amelia has chosen one of my most favorite shrubs it's known as lantern tree and you can see why
34:31it's got these gorgeous pendulous flowers that hang down and they look like lanterns exactly like lanterns
34:38it's quite an upright shrub and it's reasonably slow growing it will eventually get to about four
34:44meters high but it takes quite a long time and it flowers may june july time it is evergreen so it adds
34:52the structure to this border now it likes a neutral to acid soil free draining but it is absolutely fabulous
35:01really fantastic and a great talking point
35:12amelia and the team have put their heart and soul into creating an art deco inspired space in stockport
35:18in just two days
35:19the last little bit the finishing touches look at that that actually works really well with all the
35:30other timber doesn't it it does it's really good are you pleased i'm so pleased i i think it's i think
35:37christine and mike are gonna love it i do as well and it's got that art deco vibe to it with the
35:44structure of the plant leaves and the paving yeah very vibrant you know they wanted lots of color and
35:51warmth and i think the planting itself really delivers that right you're gonna get them out
35:55because i would love to sit here i think let's bring them out let's see what they think moment of truth
36:01christine and mike's garden was once weed ridden with overgrown shrubs and tricky levels in an awkwardly
36:09shaped space but with a 5 500 pound budget it's been transformed into a colorful curated plot
36:24inspired by the couple's love for art deco it's now perfect for socializing or simply spending time in
36:31the world's love for art deco okay so if you guys come this way right so
36:41you really wanted art deco big wow factor hints of california color glamour yep so i really hope this
36:50garden delivers that for you are you ready to open your eyes yeah yeah okay all right go for it
36:55oh my goodness wow wow our town that is magnificent is this our garden i take it you're pleased
37:10that is incredible i think they like it oh amelia oh my god that's absolutely
37:17incredible oh that was magnificent thank you very much so yeah you've got your lovely swing seat at
37:29the end now nice vocal point mike that's somewhere you can enjoy in retirement i hope absolutely yes
37:37put christine to work in the garden
37:39oh i can just see myself up there oh it's just beautiful couldn't have asked for more the couple
37:47once stepped onto a weed-filled overwhelming patio but they now arrive onto renovated tiles
37:55surrounded by planting and bordered by the california inspired gravel garden it's got that kind of dusty
38:02arid californian style yeah it's it's magnificent yeah thank you now you can
38:08hopefully have a lovely relaxing coffee here in the morning we've never sat here right never used
38:14it never known how to make it usable right how to sort of deal with it yeah yeah i think that we can
38:21use some of this catch the sun at the end of the day anyway so it's beautiful absolutely beautiful now
38:25got a little bit of privacy as well from neighbors it is amazing it made the patio smaller by the house
38:33but it actually looks bigger because of the planting i'm dying to show you the rest of the garden if that's
38:38all right so follow me to see it the center of the garden was once boring with an uneven lawn
38:46bordered by nothing but weeds it now hosts the wire-roofed pergola primed to be covered by climbers
38:56set over the patio of clay pavers perfect for socializing
39:02this is really the social hub of the garden and i know that was really important to you guys to have
39:10very much to be able to have friends family have a barbecue yeah i love these tiles oh these tiles
39:16are beautiful so these are clay pavers and they're picking up again that sort of tessellating art deco feel
39:23this is fantastic i love the color now this pergola is made from oak which is a hard one
39:28oh amazing so it's very durable it will stand the test of time and then we've got these tension wires
39:34up above and this clematis armandii will cover this in no time so we're gonna have a real canopy
39:40absolutely oh yeah that is the dream so a nice hot day like today you might find you need that bit of shade
39:48i mean i always felt quite embarrassed to entertain people so just having somewhere now and surrounded
39:54by all these beautiful plants yeah i just it's a real garden i feel proud of it is gorgeous and when
40:00all those plants are growing up you'll just be in a cocoon of color and scent i can't wait for these to
40:08fill out because they just feel so tropical and i think that's also part of that californian inspiration
40:14is to have that sort of tropical feel glamorous in stockport yeah exactly exactly bringing california
40:21here uh all day long mike and christine rarely ventured to the overgrown rear of the garden
40:28but a swing seat enveloped by tropical planting now make it the perfect space for unwinding and admiring
40:35the whole space now this is really the pinnacle of the garden christine and mike so hopefully
40:42you can enjoy some lovely relaxing evenings i love it absolutely this is the dream this has been the
40:48dream for quite a few years we kept going to these gardening shows and seeing wooden swing seats and
40:54then sitting in i think this is nice thinking this is this is nice yeah where do we put it in the car
41:00right yeah this is the dream do you want to have a little trial now or yep yeah no time like the present
41:07okay so how's that oh that's lovely then you've got a lovely focal point looking down the garden
41:16surrounded the house in this direction before mike is going to spend all his time up there i am sure
41:24where's the sign saying mike see we actually we need to label it just so that there's no confusion
41:30you've got these trachycarpus palms here at the back and this hibiscus and fatsia japonica and after a
41:37couple of years those will really mature and fill out so it should hopefully feel like a lovely verdant
41:42corner of the garden yeah and i think once they grow it's going to add to that tropical feel
41:48which is really important so christine and mike has it been worth it oh a hundred percent
41:56i think it's beautiful it's better than i for fantastic the garden to be proud of yeah yeah
42:03so obviously i haven't done this alone let's bring in charlie charlie are you uh i'm here i'm here
42:10she's here they amelia amelia they've stolen your seat i know do you like it absolutely marvelous it's a
42:21beautiful garden isn't it it's absolutely gorgeous and you always think oh i'm not green fingered i can't
42:27do this but i'm gonna learn about this i'm gonna have a go and best way to learn yeah it's to have
42:34it and then you're going to be watering it and you'll notice things and you'll you just learn by
42:40doing it it's the best way best way so that's the payoff you get the swing seat if you do the gardening
42:48that's the retirement plan seems like a reasonable yeah i think i go back on this no no too late on
43:05i really wasn't expecting to be so overwhelmed and to have such an emotional reaction but it's got all
43:11these memories of family and our trip and it's everything into intertwined i love it truly magnificent
43:20truly magnificent
43:32so
