Kyle Crabbs discusses how the New Orleans Saints second round draft pick quarterback Tyler Shough is wanting a guarantee in his contract before he signs on the dotted line
Transcript
00:00The NFL finally has a breakthrough on second-round rookies signing contracts,
00:05but this conversation, like most things do in the NFL, ends with a quarterback.
00:13I'm Kyle Kraus from A to Z Sports, and it's been an absolutely grueling summer for NFL teams
00:19picking between No. 35 and 64 in the 2025 NFL Draft to get their rookies under contract.
00:26The NFL's collective bargaining agreement sets the wage scale,
00:30so the total value of these contracts has been set in stone for quite some time.
00:34But the amount of that value that is fully guaranteed when you put pen to paper
00:39is the part that agents and teams have not been able to see eye to eye on
00:45after the Houston Texans gave Jaden Higgins, the 34th overall pick, a fully guaranteed contract.
00:51Now, this scaring contest has gone on for months,
00:53but the 49ers finally had the breakthrough when they signed the 43rd overall pick,
00:58Alfred Collins, to a four-year contract at his established rate,
01:02with 88% of the contract fully guaranteed.
01:06It's a significant jump in the amount that is fully guaranteed at signing
01:10versus what last year's 43rd overall pick was guaranteed.
01:15And the aftermath of this is you've seen many of the teams who picked players
01:19after pick No. 43 use that as the baseline to agree to terms on their respective deals
01:25with their respective second-round draft choices.
01:27We also saw Seattle's Nick Eamon-Warri, who was picked 35th overall,
01:32get the third fully guaranteed contract for a second-round draft choice,
01:37joining Carson Sir in Cleveland with pick 33,
01:39and of course, Jaden Higgins with the Houston Texans at pick No. 34.
01:43It still leaves this awkward void in the end of the 30s.
01:49And pick No. 40 is the name that everybody has soft-circled
01:52because it's the only quarterback in the round, Tyler Shuck.
01:57Shuck has a sizable opportunity to ask for a fully guaranteed contract,
02:02especially after the 41st overall pick, TJ Sanders,
02:06signed a deal that had 95% of the total value guaranteed
02:10with the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
02:12So, the question is, do the teams that pick in front of Shuck
02:16wait for Shuck to establish the depth of how far the guarantees go?
02:21Or do teams like the Browns and the Dolphins and the Patriots
02:24preempt and simply fall in line with what Seattle has now conceded
02:28in giving the third fully guaranteed contract?
02:31But with pick No. 41 getting 95% fully guaranteed,
02:35those teams in the mid to late 30s don't have a big battle to fight.
02:39And because Tyler Shuck has the positional value of quarterback
02:42in his back pocket, many across the league expect that he too will fall in line
02:47as one of the players to ultimately end up getting a fully guaranteed contract in 2025.
02:56You're welcome.
02:57Take care.
