Sir Ed Davey has called for the temporary nationalisation of Thames Water as he reacted to the latest figures in the ongoing sewage crisis. Mr Davey also criticised the government's handling of the situation, saying Labour needs to "get its act together". It comes as a watchdog has revealed the number of serious water pollution incidents increased by 60 per cent last year.

00:00These figures are absolutely shocking. I think Labour needs to get its act together.
00:05It talked about action when it was in opposition to clear up the conservative mess,
00:10but it's not gone far enough or fast enough, and Liberal Democrats will keep pursuing this.
00:15This sewage crisis is affecting everybody.
00:18Thames Water should be temporarily nationalised. It's in a complete mess,
00:22and it's fleeting customers and still one of the worst offenders in the country.
00:26In terms of the whole industry, we think it should be put into a new status,
00:30what we call a public benefit company, so you can make sure that it operates commercially,
00:35it doesn't cost the taxpayer lots of money, but it can make sure it puts the environment at the top of its agenda,
00:41so we can deal with the public health issues, we can clean up our rivers and our seas.
00:46And it's a model that's used elsewhere in the world. We should use it here in the UK.
