00:00When did you realize your family wasn't normal?
00:02The day I found out my dad had been taking things from our neighbors for three years
00:05and giving them to us as gifts.
00:07I was 21 and helping him clean out the garage when I found this huge pile of shipping boxes
00:11with other people's names and addresses on them.
00:13At first I thought maybe he was holding packages for neighbors who weren't home when deliveries
00:17came, but there were way too many boxes and some of the addresses were from streets across
00:21town that we'd never even been to before in our lives.
00:24When I asked him about it, he got defensive and said he found them sitting outside so
00:27he figured the owners didn't want them anymore.
00:29But these boxes were clearly fresh deliveries, not things that had been sitting outside
00:33for days waiting to be picked up.
00:34I started recognizing some of the items in our house that I'd always assumed my parents
00:38bought normally through regular shopping trips.
00:41The expensive coffee maker my mom loved using every morning, the power tools in the garage,
00:45even some of my Christmas presents from previous years.
00:47My dad had this whole system figured out down to the smallest details.
00:50He'd drive around different neighborhoods looking for packages left on doorsteps during work
00:54hours when people weren't home.
00:56He'd take them and bring them home, then give them to us as surprise gifts.
00:59Throughout the year, he was actually proud of his system and thought he was being smart
01:03by getting free stuff for the family without spending money.
01:06He'd brag about finding great deals without mentioning where the deals actually came from
01:10or who they originally belonged to.
01:12My mom knew about it too and was completely on board with the whole operation.
01:15She'd help him open packages and decide which items to keep and which ones to donate or throw
01:19away.
01:20They treated it like some kind of fun treasure hunt instead of recognizing what they were actually
01:24doing.
01:24I tried explaining that these were other people's purchases that they'd paid for with their own
01:28money and were probably waiting to receive at home.
01:31But my dad just shrugged and said if people didn't want their stuff taken, they shouldn't
01:35leave it sitting outside unguarded like that.
01:37When I threatened to call the police, he laughed and said I was being overly dramatic about the
01:41whole situation.
01:42He claimed taking packages wasn't a real crime because the items were just sitting there free
01:46for anyone to grab.
01:47Like, that somehow made it legal.
01:48The situation got really serious when our neighbor across the street started complaining loudly
01:53about missing packages to anyone who would listen.
01:56She'd ordered important medication that never arrived and was getting angry with the delivery
01:59company for losing her order.
02:01My dad had taken her prescription drugs and thrown them away because he didn't want medicine
02:04in our house.
02:05I realized people were missing important deliveries like medication, birthday gifts, and work supplies
02:10because my dad thought he was entitled to take whatever he wanted.
02:13The guilt was eating me alive, knowing that people in our community were suffering because
02:17of my family's actions, elderly neighbors missing their medications, kids not getting birthday
02:21presents their parents had ordered, people losing money on items they'd never receive.
02:25I couldn't sleep at night thinking about all the lives we'd affected without even knowing
02:28it.
02:29How many people had argued with delivery companies or thought their packages were lost when
02:33really my dad had just stolen them from their front porches.
02:36I ended up calling the police myself and reporting my own father for what he'd been doing.
02:40They arrested him two days later when they caught him in the act of taking packages from
02:44a house three blocks away from ours.
02:45He got charged with multiple felonies.
02:47My relationship with my parents never recovered after that day.
02:50They blamed me for destroying our family by getting my dad arrested instead of just keeping
02:54quiet about it.
02:55But I couldn't live with knowing we were using things that belonged to people in our community.
