00:00Mosquito season is well underway.
00:02Do you know what to do if you get bitten?
00:04You might be surprised to learn that, according to HuffPost, you're not supposed to scratch
00:08the bite.
00:09Dr. Bobby Pritt, director of the Mayo Clinic's Clinical Parasitology Laboratory, told the
00:13outlet that if you scratch too hard, bacteria like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus that
00:18live on the skin could get into the bite and cause an infection.
00:21Instead, the Mayo Clinic recommends applying calamine lotion, a non-prescription antihistamine
00:26cream or corticosteroid cream.
00:28You could also apply a homemade paste made out of baking soda and water.
00:32Of course, it's even better to avoid getting bitten at all, especially with recent reported
00:36cases of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus.
00:39The CDC recommends preventing mosquito bites by using insect repellent and wearing loose-fitting,
00:44long-sleeved shirts and pants.
00:46Mosquitoes suck, but with the right precautions, they usually don't have to get in the way
00:50of summer fun.
