00:00we've invited some of our customers to share their experiences of years gone by in the time
00:25that they've spent within the pool and it's nice to see how things have changed the one thing that's
00:30definitely the the heart of it all is the staff and the sort of personal experience that they
00:35give to our customers and that's so important to share the schools do come in for swimming lessons
00:40here so to get them involved in our celebrations decorating the venue with birthday cards and
00:47posters to celebrate our birthday it's just been great smiles on the faces for the children for
00:52seo well i've been coming here since the early 90s staff have always been brilliant i have a few
00:59health problems and staff all know it they keep an eye out make sure that everything's okay i i've
01:05been coming regular i've brought my grandchildren and help them learn to swim here i'm head coach
01:12at grove amateur swim club which has been training at dalry since 1901 so just a few years after it
01:19opened and we've been at dalry swim center ever since so i started swimming at dalry when i was
01:25very young i used to cry at the side of the pool with the swim teachers and then i started coming
01:29with the school then i joined grove when i was about eight years old it's really friendly fun and
01:34relaxed atmosphere for swimmers who maybe don't want to go on to compete they can come here make
01:39friends develop their swimming and go on to other aquatic sports such as synchro water follow lifeguarding
01:45coaching every year the swimming club has their club championships and we have trophies for the
01:51kids that go back to 1901 when the club first started so as we look towards 125 years next year
01:58we're hoping to do some sort of celebration for that following the baths and wash house act of the 1840s
02:07the edinburgh city council or corporation made these steps to improve public health because conditions
02:16in the city were so squalid and many people most people didn't have running water for example in
02:23their homes so having access to a hot bath and being able to go in and bathe as well as
02:33do laundry many of the victorian swimming pools also have a steamy attached as i'm sure people will be
02:39aware so that went on well into the late 20th century and today we still have those buildings
02:48serving the communities dotted around the city we've met lots of frequent visitors to dalroy pool today
02:55the buildings and the built environment plays a big part and being maintained by edinburgh leisure they're
03:01looking out for their community much as it was at the beginning when they were new managing victorian
03:07pools is just phenomenal they're like no other buildings coming in every day looking at the sort
03:13of architecture especially when you've got the old victorian style with a twist of modern keeping
03:20things up to date is just brilliant and i've been here through refurbishments with the customers with
03:26the staff and actually you've seen the the happy smiley faces on people at the end it's definitely worthwhile
