00:00Move!
00:01Why weren't they paying attention?
00:03Why did they think that that roof didn't need cover?
00:06Police say 20-year-old Thomas Crooks fired those gunshots.
00:09Investigators say the once-shy college kid planned the attack for days.
00:14The feds say Crooks was stockpiling weapons and making explosives in his room.
00:19If you could talk to Thomas Crooks' parents, what would you say to them?
00:23Why would you not go in there and look in his room and say,
00:27You know what, son? You need help.
00:29The president has said there will be a comprehensive report about the assassination attempt,
00:34but no details yet on when that would be made public.
00:37Trump reflected on that now-infamous day with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, this week.
00:42Little mistakes made, and that shouldn't have happened.
00:47The current Secret Service director, Sean Curran, tells Fox his heart remains with Cory Comparatore's family,
00:53but says his agency has made major changes since last year to make sure something like this never happens again.
01:01Reporting in Butler, Pennsylvania, I'm Alexis McAdams, Fox News.
01:05All right, thank you so much for that, Alexis.
01:08And we're continuing to mark that day as there are moments that define American history, and 365 days ago was one of them.
01:17A year prior, it was then-candidate Donald Trump on the campaign trail in Butler, Pennsylvania,
01:23there in the western side of that key swing state, trying to move voters to his side to cast their ballot in that November election.
01:32And then this unfolded during a speech to supporters. Shots rang out in an assassination attempt.
01:40And I think so many people remember exactly where they were when they heard this news,
01:45and that includes people at the rally, including a reporter I want to bring in right now to this conversation.
01:50Selena Zito, you were just feet away from this. You did write the book now that's just come out.
01:56Butler, the untold story of the near assassination attempt of Donald Trump and fight for America's heartland.
02:03Is that moment ingrained in your mind?
02:06Yes. I was thinking about that today, because today is about the same weather as that day.
02:14High 90s, no clouds in the sky, just blue, hot.
02:19And, you know, there was just so many things that brought me back to that moment.
02:23I can't believe it's been a year there in many respects.
02:27It feels like it just happened yesterday.
02:29You know, I was standing in the buffer.
02:34Usually that's not somewhere a journalist is. Photographers are, but not journalists.
02:39And I just happened to be there because I said the president wanted to say hello to me right before the rally started.
02:47And I was set to fly to Bedminster with him that day to do an interview with him about Pennsylvania.
02:55I was there with my daughter, who's a photo journalist.
02:58She actually took the photo, the cover of the book's photo.
03:03We were following him out as he was going out onto the stage.
03:10I saw him do two things that I've never seen him do before.
03:17He brought a chart down in the beginning of the rally.
03:21That's not something he usually does.
03:23If he ever does a chart, it's usually at the end.
03:27And they don't turn his neck away.
03:29Now, why is that important?
03:31Well, if you've ever watched in detail a Trump rally or if you've ever been to one,
03:37it is a very transactional, connective moment between him and the people attending.
03:45So he doesn't turn his neck away.
03:47He'll turn his body in different directions, but not his neck away.
03:51But the chart comes down.
03:53He just says a couple words.
03:54He turns his neck away.
03:56And I hear the shots ring right out over me.
04:00They, I knew exactly what it was.
04:03I'm a gun owner.
04:05I saw him grab his ear.
04:07I saw the blood and I saw him take himself down, which I thought in the moment, okay,
04:14this might be a good sign.
04:16But then there were four more shots.
